Having your family publicly appreciate art while privately denouncing the profession is the pinnacle of the core Indian experience. However, while most boomers might discard the career path due to well-established fears of the “struggling artist”, India’s most <keyword id="21837275" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="successful-artists" source="keywords">successful artists</keyword> are anything but struggling, it turns out. The <keyword id="21308480" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hurun-Research-Institute" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Hurun Research Institute" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Hurun Research Institute">Hurun Research Institute</keyword> has just released their Art List of 2024, which encapsulates the top 50 most successful living painters and sculptors from India, or who have made India their place of work. With notable figures such as the creator of Chicago’s “<keyword id="21837279" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-bean" source="Orion">The Bean</keyword>” and various <keyword id="20128810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Padma-Bhushan" source="keywords">Padma Bhushan</keyword> and Padma Shri recipients in the list, you can rest assured that this article is as Indian parent-friendly as can be. Dominating the list for the sixth year in a row, 70-year-old sculptor <keyword id="21283454" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anish-Kapoor" source="keywords">Anish Kapoor</keyword> continues to exercise his fame as India’s most successful artist alive. According to Hurun, the creator of ‘Cloud Gate’ — or ‘The Bean’ as it is commonly known – amassed a whopping Rs 79.9 crores via a plethora of sculptures last year. If not for The Bean, you might remember Anish from his involvement in the Vantablack controversy, when the artist signed a contract for exclusive rights to the new material’s use in painting and sculpture. Such is the fame that Anish has carved out for himself that he even reigns far above the rest of the Indians on Hurun’s list, monetarily speaking. In second place comes 87-year-old <keyword id="21837278" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gulam-mohammed-sheikh" source="keywords">Gulam Mohammed Sheikh</keyword>, a Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awardee who earned an impressive Rs 24.1 crores last year. The richest woman artist with an inspiring banker-turned-painter story, 87-year-old Arpita Singh, came in third with Rs 22.9 crores. In fact, while artists over 80 years of age litter most of the list — the oldest being the 99-year-old <keyword id="21837277" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="krishen-khanna" source="keywords">Krishen Khanna</keyword> in fifth position with 18 crores — there is one unmissable and striking exception. 27-year-old <keyword id="21837276" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="raghav-babbar" source="keywords">Raghav Babbar</keyword> became the eighth highest-selling Indian artist after totalling 12.1 crores in sales, providing a fantastic example that even youngsters can make money through art. As for the individual pieces with the biggest price tags, Gulam Mohamed Sheikh’s 2015 piece ‘Ark: Kashmir’ stands far ahead of the competition after being sold at Rs 21 crores last year. In total, four art creations were sold for over Rs 5 crores last year, including designs from Arpita Singh, Anish Kapoor and Raghav Babbar. A sculpture of the Hulk constructed from stainless steel discs and plated fibreglass by Valay Shende was another of the top-selling works in 2023. With a total of Rs 301 crores from 789 art lots sold, this year’s report shows a very clear trend: the demand for Indian art is indubitably on the rise. In fact, the entry point for artists in the top ten almost quadrupled from Rs 2 crores to Rs 7.7 crores in the mere span of three years. These figures helped India land the seventh place globally in terms of art auction turnover, according to Hurun. "With rising middle-class incomes, our expectation is that Indian art will become one of the top preferred choices to 'invest' in a growing asset class and 'spend' on a meaningful lifestyle addition,” explains Anas Rahman Junaid, founder of Hurun India. He argues that India being one of the world’s oldest civilisations lends it an exponentially higher intrinsic art value compared to the status quo. This recognition will likely continue to help the Indian art sector grow at a good pace in the coming years.

The combined value of the top 10 companies remained unchanged in the last one year, at ₹73.3 lakh crore. However, the picture wasn't as rosy for the startup ecosystem. The top 10 had a mixed year, five of them seeing a robust double double digit growth in value, two of them saw single-digit growth, and three of them shed around 10% of their value. L&amp;T’s value went up by 41%, HDFC Bank’s value swelled by 35% due the merger with its parent, and ITC too saw its value swell by 24%. Notable exits &amp; big comebacks Startups, however, had a bad year with Swiggy shedding 26% of its value, Dream11’s value went down by 9.8%, and Razorpay by 8.5%. Meanwhile, in the listed space, while most new-age companies like Policybazaar, Delhivery, Zomato Paytm, saw their valuations go up, Nykaa remained an outlier as it shed 26.8% of its value. Byju’s and Pharmeasy exited the list which has a new cut off rate of ₹6,700 crore. “Startup funding and valuation continued their downward trajectory. Startups in the list cumulatively lost ₹4 lakh crore led by <keyword id="19914048" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="byjus" source="keywords">Byjus</keyword>, Dealshare, and Pharmeasy; which failed to make it to the list this year,” Hurun said. The unlisted universe had yet another disappointment. India’s most valuable unlisted company and Covid-19 vaccine maker Serum Institute of India saw its value decrease by 13% to ₹1.9 lakh crore. There have been many comeback stories as well amongst the top 500 companies. Suzlon Energy registered one of the highest value growth this year, as its value swelled by a remarkable 436%. Jindal Stainless’ value went up by 395% and JSW Infrastructure by 310%. “It indicates a rise in renewable energy and infrastructure development. For instance, INOX Wind, which was on the path to insolvency in 2017, registered a 450% growth in value and stormed into 2023 Burgundy Private <keyword id="20554331" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hurun-india" source="keywords">Hurun India</keyword> 500,” said Anas Rahman Junaid, MD and chief researcher, of Hurun India. But, 61 new companies made their debut to the list, led by industrial products with 16 new entrants, followed by financial services with 10 new entrants. Apart from Inox Wind, freshly listed R R Kabel and Welspun Corp were the notable unlisted entrants including unicorn Incred Finance, and Bengaluru-based gaming startup Gameskraft. Jio Financial Services which recently demerged from RIL is the 28th most valuable company. cumulative value of ₹231 lakh crore ($2.8 trillion). They went up from ₹212 lakh crore from June last year, but remained flat since 2021, the report says. “The 2023 Burgundy Private Hurun India 500 list is a strong confirmation of the Indian economy's solid performance in all sectors. The increase in new entrants from industrial goods shows India's rising manufacturing growth,” said Junaid. The combined value of the listed and unlisted companies which made it to the 2023 Burgundy Private Hurun India 500, is more than the combined GDP of Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and Singapore, the report said. “The 2023 Burgundy Private Hurun India 500 companies represent India’s economically strongest businesses. The reason is self-explanatory as these companies have a total value of $2.8 trillion, which is almost 90% of India’s current GDP, i.e. they are the backbone of India’s economy. Together, these 500 companies had combined sales of ₹79 lakh crore and employed 7 million staff, which is more than the working population of Switzerland,” Junaid said. The cut off for companies to enter the list went up by 13% to ₹6,700 crore.

The top 10 list cumulatively donated ₹3,378 crore in FY22, as against a combined donation of ₹12,785 crore last year. The good news is that the list has seen 19 new additions, with total donations by these new entrants adding up to ₹832 crore. Also, six women have featured on the list this year. The youngest philanthropist on the list is 36-year-old Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha. Clearly, the young entrepreneurs are beginning their philanthropic journey early on unlike many others from corporate India. Nadar’s philanthropic efforts have mainly focussed on education. Overall, contributions towards philanthropy have fallen in FY22 because of the pandemic impact. Nadar’s donation too is down 8% in the fiscal year 2021-22, as per the list. Wipro’s Azim Premji slipped to the second spot with an annual donation of ₹484 crore as his contribution towards philanthropy has fallen by 95% year-on-year due to the exceptional share buy-back in 2021, says the report. Billionaire <keyword id="3820" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mukesh-ambani" source="Orion">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>, the chairman of Reliance Industries, is third on the list with contributions totalling ₹411 crore. Ambani’s contribution fell 29% compared to last year. Kumar Mangalam Birla was fourth on the list with a contribution of ₹242 crore. Couples Susmita &amp; Subroto Bagchi and Radha &amp; NS Parthasarathy from Mindtree’s management debuted on the list with a combined donation of ₹426 crore to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and also entered the top 10 and were ranked fifth. Both Subroto and Parthasarathy are co-founders of Mindtree. With a donation of ₹190 crore, <keyword id="111343" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gautam-adani" source="Orion">Gautam Adani</keyword> &amp; family ranks seventh on the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022. Shiv Nadar tops philanthropy list, even as India’s most generous cut back after the pandemic

<keyword id="6419840" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Azim-Premji">Azim Premji</keyword> (69), who donated Rs 12,316 crore between April 2013 and October 2014, has topped the list of philanthropists in India. Anil Agarwal of Vedanta Resources stood distant second, donating Rs 1,796 crore. Premji’s donation is about six times more than that of Anil. 
 According to the list, which was compiled by Shanghai-based <keyword id="770462" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="HuRun-Research-Institute">Hurun Research Institute</keyword> (HRI), 50 people donated at least Rs 10 crore during this period. <keyword id="44903" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shiv-Nadar">Shiv Nadar</keyword>, Ratan Tata and Mukesh Ambani were ranked third, fourth and fifth, respectively. 
 
Premji had topped the list even last times. As per HRI’s 'India rich list' issued in October 2014, Premji stood at fourth position in terms of personal wealth. He had Rs 86,100 crore at that time. 
 
Most of the Indian philanthropists preferred to donate in the field of education, which accounted for about 80% of the total donations. 
 
Hurun Research “includes cash and cash equivalents pledged with legally binding commitments for the period and includes significant donations ($16.7 million) up to the date of publication. It included donations made by companies in which an individual had a significant share, by applying the percentage the individual has of the company on the donations.” 
 "The list is a good representation of responsible entrepreneurship in India. It's interesting to note that many entrepreneurs in India consider religious donations as <keyword id="6495681" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Philanthropy">philanthropy</keyword>. In this context, we would have missed many more in India." said Anas Rahman Junaid, publisher-at-large of Hurun Report India, which is the Indian wing of the Shanghai-based institute.

The IIFL Wealth Hurun Report India ranks the richest of Indians — and quite a few of them are from the technology sector. Unlike other industries, globally tech billionaires are self-made, and come from humble beginnings. While India has a few who had legacy businessmen, a new set of entrepreneurs who bet on new-age technology like cloud, mobile payments and digital ad platforms also managed to make their moolah and hence made it to the list. <ul class="summary-list"><li>According to Hurun's 2024 rich list, China lost 432 billionaires since the high of 1,185 in 2021.</li><li>It's a reflection of China's struggling economy and a government crackdown on the superrich.</li></ul>The number of China's billionaires has dropped by a third since 2021, according to an annual rich list.There were fewer dollar billionaires as difficulties for China's economy and government crackdowns took their toll, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.hurun.net/en-us/rank/hsrankdetails?pagetype=rich">the Hurun Research Institute said.</a>Hurun, a private research group that has tracked Chinese billionaires since 1999, said the total peaked in 2021 with 1,185 billionaires, a figure which fell to 753, a decline of 432, or 36% of the total.It comes as some of China's superrich choose to lie low or leave the country, finding covert ways to take their money with them.<h2 id="4b530a5d-4714-4288-bffd-c77cf18006cc">An old guard departs</h2>Older tycoons — often real estate — are giving way to a new cohort propelled by tech, energy, and e-commerce.Topping the Hurun list this year was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-billionaire-zhang-yiming-net-worth-lifestyle-2019-11">Zhang Yiming</a>, the founder of TikTok owner Bytedance, with a fortune of $49.3 billion.ByteDance's global revenue grew 30% last year to $110 billion, with users in the US of its TikTok app closing in on 200 million. ByteDance operates a separate app, Douyin, for Chinese users.Yiming replaced <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/asias-richest-man-zhong-shanshan-lifestyle-wealth-2021-1">Zhong Shanshan</a>, who fell to second place with a fortune of $47.9 billion. Those headwinds hit its superrich, too.Earlier this month, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-economy-3q-gdp-growth-stock-market-stimulus-2024-10">China released third-quarter growth data</a> that was its slowest in six quarters. China lost 36% of its billionaires to years of economic troubles and crackdowns

On Wednesday, the rupee closed at 81.30 against the US dollar, on month-end exporter dollar selling and MSCI rebalancing related inflows. "The Indian rupee started the new month on a front foot following stronger Asian currencies and risk-on sentiments. "It has gained in three out of the last four days as the dollar index slipped to a three-month low after Fed Chair Jerome Powell confirmed the pace of interest rates set to slow along with China easing the COVID restrictions," said Dilip Parmar, Research Analyst, HDFC Securities. Parmar further noted that in the near-term, spot USDINR has support at 80.72, the 100 days simple moving average and resistance at 81.91, the recent swing high formed on November 21. The bias remains bearish for the pair as long as it trades below 82.10. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, slipped 0.41 per cent to 105.51. Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures declined 0.10 per cent to USD 86.88 per barrel. On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share BSE Sensex advanced 184.54 points or 0.29 per cent to end at 63,284.19, while the broader NSE Nifty gained 54.15 points or 0.29 per cent to 18,812.50.
