However, his plan to tax all US imports is viewed as a headwind that could be inflationary and hit consumer spending.</p><p id="c604a2de-d86e-4c5a-8272-80c2c117fa03">If those inflation worries come true, interest rates would be higher and push bond prices lower. Trump is also seen as bullish for crypto, and his protectionist policies are viewed as likely to push the dollar higher.</p><h3 id="f5661b95-8cae-4195-968e-937088b5c035">Harris</h3><p id="f5661b95-8cae-4195-968e-937088b5c035">The current vice president's plan to raise the corporate tax rate is expected to hit the beneficiaries of Trump's proposed cut hardest. Her plan to regulate the financial sector is also seen as holding back stocks in the industry. On the positive side, Harris' policies would likely benefit homebuilder and renewable-energy stocks.</p><p id="f5661b95-8cae-4195-968e-937088b5c035">Harris' plans are also considered to be less inflationary than Trump's, which would allow the Federal Reserve to keep cutting rates, boosting bond prices. Her continuity with President Joe Biden's policies is expected to push the dollar lower. Harris is also viewed as crypto-positive.</p><h2 id="9fffe11a-9455-431b-baef-03c634fbeb2b"><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cost-expensive-goods-price-impact-presidential-election-scenarios-trump-harris-2024-10"><strong>Costs</strong></a></h2><h3 id="4d8effe9-7729-4dbe-b985-0353c12003a7">Trump</h3><p id="4d8effe9-7729-4dbe-b985-0353c12003a7">Trump's plan to impose a broad-based 10%-to-20% tariff on most goods brought in from other countries is widely viewed as making import-reliant products more expensive. Major categories with high potential tariff exposure include automobiles, drugs for human and veterinary use, food and beverage, furniture, and household appliances.</p><p id="4d8effe9-7729-4dbe-b985-0353c12003a7">Relatedly, the former president has previously said he'll lower grocery prices by restricting food imports to bolster domestic producers.</p><h3 id="c9f25ce7-8011-4641-a4cf-cdefe1de92d9">Harris</h3><p>While Harris could continue tariffs instated by Biden, her import-tax policy is seen as less inflationary than Trump's. For groceries, the vice president released a plan to tackle high food costs by implementing a federal ban on price gouging during national emergencies.</p><p>For drug prices, Harris has promised to expand two provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act, allowing Medicare to negotiate the prices of some drugs.</p><h2 id="ed67f4da-e516-414c-ba19-f692892a0f86"><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/market-impact-presidential-election-scenarios-trump-harris-stocks-bonds-crypto-2024-10"><strong>Housing</strong></a></h2><h3 id="c3f2844c-6bb9-473d-91db-9163697e0f29">Trump</h3><p>Trump has said on the campaign trail that the ongoing housing shortage could be addressed by deporting millions of people from the country. The former president also said he could decrease demand by banning mortgages for immigrants living in the US illegally.</p><p>Further — during his previous White House tenure — Trump opposed the construction of high-density housing in single-family-zoned areas, although he has not said during this election cycle whether he wants to continue pursuing similar policies.</p><h3 id="dd9ed82e-f056-4bf1-a84a-ce1071f56fc5">Harris</h3><p id="c3f2844c-6bb9-473d-91db-9163697e0f29">Harris' planned policy includes the construction of 3 million new housing units, as well as an expansion to the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit. She also plans to create a $40 billion federal innovation fund that would encourage local governments to build housing.</p><p id="c3f2844c-6bb9-473d-91db-9163697e0f29">The vice president has also said she would take action against "corporate landlords" and call on Congress to remove tax benefits from investors who acquire 50 or more single-family rental homes.</p><h2 id="b0d6cc09-dd6b-4d2e-9216-5c8ecbcfa7e0"><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tax-cut-tariff-plan-outlook-presidential-election-scenarios-harris-trump-2024-10"><strong>Taxes</strong></a></h2><h3 id="206237a6-9eca-4208-bb25-b7f76c2ce845">Trump</h3><p>Trump has proposed lowering the corporate tax rate from 21% to 15% for firms that make their products in the US.</p><p>The former president has also said he plans to extend his slew of tax cuts from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 — also known as the "Trump tax cut."</p><p>A permanent continuation of the TCJA's income-tax provisions would amount to a nearly $280,000 tax cut for the top 0.1% of earners, compared to $1,000 for middle-income Americas, a Tax Policy Center analysis found. Trump's plan for universal tariffs is seen as offsetting a positive tax impact and would be especially costly for lower-earning Americans.</p><h3 id="77d8ca5f-0db1-4a2a-87e9-9b8e7ae5c85b">Harris</h3><p id="77d8ca5f-0db1-4a2a-87e9-9b8e7ae5c85b">Harris wants to bump up the corporate tax rate from 21% to 28%, while also proposing some specific breaks for small businesses.</p><p id="77d8ca5f-0db1-4a2a-87e9-9b8e7ae5c85b">The vice president has also proposed an expanded earned-income tax credit aimed at lower earners, and she wants to restore and expand upon a more generous child tax credit, similar to the one implemented under Biden's pandemic-relief bill in 2021. Harris also shares some middle ground with Trump in terms of wanting to eliminate taxes on tips.</p><p id="77d8ca5f-0db1-4a2a-87e9-9b8e7ae5c85b">For high-income earners, Harris supports two measures that have gained traction during the Biden administration: targeting ultrawealthy investors' capital gains, and imposing a minimum income tax on billionaires.</p><h2 id="2804ce0e-fc32-40e9-803e-c53a6b31f02b"><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/childcare-costs-presidential-election-scenarios-parents-paid-leave-harris-trump-2024-10">Childcare</a></h2><h3 id="ed726a64-f988-4421-a339-c95f21949f4f">Trump</h3><p id="ed726a64-f988-4421-a339-c95f21949f4f">Trump has also<strong> </strong>proposed expanding the child tax credit, which currently provides up to $2,000 per child. In August, the vice presidential candidate JD Vance floated a child tax credit proposal that would include $5,000 per child for families of all income levels.</p><p>In addition, while previously in office, Trump signed a bipartisan bill that provided federal employees with 12 weeks of paid parental leave, although he hasn't emphasized the issue on the 2024 campaign trail.</p><h3 id="e35abccd-064c-4d14-947d-2de0192dc4b9">Harris</h3><p id="e35abccd-064c-4d14-947d-2de0192dc4b9">Harris has promised to cap families' childcare costs at no more than 7% of their incomes, compared to the between 8% and 19.3% spent by the median American family in 2022. The vice president's child tax credit policy would restore the enhanced pandemic-era credit, giving parents up to $3,600 annually per child, with the amount dependent on a child's age and family income.</p><p id="e35abccd-064c-4d14-947d-2de0192dc4b9">Further, during her run for president in 2020, Harris supported a six-month paid-leave policy for Americans with a new child or a sick relative.</p>

How the election will impact your wallet

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Investment bankers have a language of their own, even when discussing mundane workplace topics.</li><li>It can make the industry seem more complicated than it really is.</li></ul><p>If a random person tunes into a quarterly bank earnings call or stands in line at a coffee shop behind a pair of bankers, it's likely that half the conversation would be indecipherable to them.</p><p>That's not only because finance is inherently technical. Part of what makes working on Wall Street appear so complicated and mystical to outsiders is the distinct vernacular with which financiers speak — even when discussing everyday topics like bonuses and PowerPoint presentations.</p><p>If a CEO says he or she is "exploring strategic alternatives," it often just means the company is trying to sell an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-sachs-investor-day-david-solomon-addresses-consumer-banking">underperforming business line</a>. A "coffee chat" in the finance recruiting world is usually code for a preliminary job interview. And so on.</p><p>The use of such a specific, insider-only terminology makes things seem more complicated than they really are. It's an extension of the industry's culture as a whole: exclusive, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-sachs-internship-what-its-like-to-work-for-goldman-2023-8">difficult to break into</a>, and designed to weed out anyone who isn't willing to figure it out and keep up.</p><p>Business Insider asked industry insiders to weigh in on the most common words and phrases they've used and heard around the office. To be sure, Wall Street's lingo can vary depending on the job at hand, whether advising on deals or helping large investors buy and sell stocks and bonds. These 12 terms, however, appear to be some of the foundational lingo of the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wall-street-q3-investment-banking-boom-could-be-upended-2024-10">investment-banking</a> industry.</p><div type="image" title="Man in a suit exits the Wall Street subway station" height="3333" width="5000" msid="114912728" hostid="261" sizebytes="762740"></div><h2 id="c552fd55-28a0-4d36-bafc-4e7489410764"><strong>Bake-off</strong></h2><p>This is banker parlance for when several banks compete to be chosen as an advisor by a client, whether it be for an IPO, a merger, a sale, or a refinancing. Earlier this year, Morgan Stanley's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wall-street-bake-offs-back-morgan-stanley-2q-ted-pick-2024-7">Ted Pick</a> said he was "seeing bake-offs running at triple-plus the year-over-year rate" during their second-quarter earnings call.</p><h2 id="85790bd6-0b79-4fe1-be87-7385d059ea22"><strong>Bespoke</strong></h2><p>This word just <em>sounds</em> expensive. We point it out less because it's code for something else and more because of its widespread use in the industry. In the context of finance, this term refers to services that are tailored; customized; made specifically for a client's individual needs. You'll find it on a lot of financial firms' websites, often in a homepage paragraph that boasts all of the company's "bespoke client offerings."</p><h2 id="3f31f49a-de31-46ab-856a-c4167381e287"><strong>Color</strong></h2><p>"Color" basically means detail and is often used when bankers are asking for more of something. Whether it's research or an explanation, asking for "more color" means "tell me more."</p><p>"Can you give us some more color on __?" is how many <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-outlook-sp500-targets-bull-market-goldman-ubs-bmo-2024-10?_gl=1*11905bk*_ga*MjAyMTc5MjI0OS4xNzExNjUwMDgw*_ga_E21CV80ZCZ*MTczMDQ4NzkyNC4zMDkuMS4xNzMwNDg4NjUzLjYwLjAuMA..">stock analysts</a> begin their questions for CEOs in earnings calls.</p><h2 id="bb4d6609-6ba3-487c-91f4-c5bc4e5d0ac9"><strong>Deck</strong></h2><p>Instead of saying slideshow or PowerPoint, bankers refer to multipage client presentations as "decks." It's common for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-investment-banking-internship-wall-street-summer-2022">junior bankers</a> to spend hours toiling over edits in decks at the instruction of senior bankers who want to use them in client meetings. A manager might leave a comment on a page telling the junior banker to "kill this," which just means delete it. A manager might also instruct the junior banker to "take another stab" at it, which means doing the presentation over again and sending it back by email.</p><h2 id="cb2eadd9-3b97-4627-9c23-eb03ce892092"><strong>Boil the ocean</strong></h2><p>It's obviously not possible to boil the ocean's water, and that's the idea behind this turn of phrase (though it didn't originate in banking). If a banker remarks that a junior need not "boil the ocean," it basically means they're doing too much or making something more complicated than it needs to be.</p><div type="image" title="A man in a suit walks down the street" height="3000" width="4500" msid="114912724" hostid="261" sizebytes="562010"></div><h2 id="913e2169-95a0-45a2-ba4c-442015fb4d1b"><strong>Capacity</strong></h2><p>Capacity is another word for bandwidth, and this turn of phrase is often used by associates or VPs who need help from lower-ranking investment-banking analysts. The unspoken rule is that to be a "good" analyst, the only correct answer when a senior asks them if they "have capacity" to edit a 50-page deck in an hour is yes. (Their superiors might also follow up by assuring them that it "won't be a heavy lift.")</p><h2 id="677ff694-418a-4ab6-8717-bda4e34cdc4b"><strong>Exit opps</strong></h2><p>In private-equity land, making an "exit" usually refers to the sale of a firm's portfolio company, hopefully at a good return on investment. In the banking world, it's morphed into another usage: a new job.</p><p>"Exit opps," short for exit opportunities, specifically refers to the job prospects that are reasonably attainable after leaving a given bank or firm. When a college student is deciding on <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-sachs-interns-discuss-summer-job-how-to-succeed-2024-6">investment-banking internships</a>, for example, he or she might take into consideration whether a specific firm has "good exit opps." For many junior bankers, good exit opps often refers to the potential to get a job in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/private-equity-firms-start-recruiting-early-investment-bank-apollo-kkr-2024-6">private equity</a> after the standard two-year analyst program is over. A bank with great exit opps might have a lot of alumni working for top private equity firms, for example.</p><h2 id="188b045c-3c3a-499f-8ccd-98e6dcb1c537"><strong>Staffer</strong></h2><p>In layman's terms, "staffer" would usually refer to any person who works at a company or organization. In the investment banking world, "staffer" is very specific job and title referring to a person (usually a VP) who is responsible for allocating work to junior bankers and assigning them to specific deal teams. They have a lot of power over the juniors' lives, including the quality of deals they work on and their share of the drudge work.</p><p>Usually, the staffer role is temporary and just one of the VP's many responsibilities.</p><h2 id="71e4a209-feb0-4f42-9b1a-8833bcbf1a37"><strong>Sweaty</strong></h2><p>This term refers to how many hours or how hard a particular investment banking group tends to work. You might hear, for example, someone say that the healthcare team at XYZ investment bank is a "particularly sweaty" group to work in. Basically, that means they work really <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wall-street-skepticism-80-hour-work-week-caps-jpmorgan-bofa-2024-9">long hours</a> — worse than usual (and the industry-wide norm is already in the 80 to 90-hour-per-week range).</p><h2 id="cdcaa769-dea6-4506-b71d-26de5ee2d0bf"><strong>The Street</strong></h2><p>The Street (often written with a capital "S") is shorthand for Wall Street — not the literal Manhattan block, but the industry of high finance as a whole and those who work in it.</p><p>You might hear someone in banking say, for example, that their firm has the "best culture on the Street" or that a particular group is "top of the Street in deal flow." A firm that pays fairly offers <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/investment-bank-analyst-associate-starting-salaries-goldman-sachs-jpmorgan-citi-morgan-stanley">compensation</a> that's "in line with the Street." In stock market talk, "trading with the Street" usually means someone is trading along the lines of majority opinion.</p><h2 id="0e18f23a-3ebd-4bd6-ae56-55ae38ba737f"><strong>Top-bucket</strong></h2><p>Bonuses are indicative of one's performance — or at least some senior bankers' perception of performance. If you get a "top-bucket" bonus, it means your check was on the high end of the spectrum. Middle-bucket and bottom-bucket bonuses go accordingly. It's so much a part of the culture that the term is also used by higher-ups to describe their <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/survey-reveals-junior-analyst-salaries-best-banks-to-work-for-2022-11">junior bankers</a> professionally.</p><p>If a first-year banker consistently pulls all-nighters to perfect client materials like decks and research summaries, their VP might say to the MD: "Wow, Jane is real top-bucket analyst." Jane might go on to get one of the highest bonuses in her analyst class at the end of the year. Someone might be called a "bottom-bucket analyst" if they aren't busy or are consistently the first to leave the desk. Bottom-bucket analysts tend to receive the least desirable assignments.</p><h2 id="ccc44d1b-ec92-4387-9101-c02bab702f22"><strong>Version up</strong></h2><p>"Don't forget to version up so I can see your changes," an associate might tell a new analyst. Saving documents can get pretty complicated in banking. Each time a banker makes changes to client materials pre-meeting — like a deck — it's standard practice for every round of edits or changes to be saved as a new file. This is done in case a file crashes or someone needs to refer to an older draft. Bankers "level up" by adding v02, v03, v04, etc., to the end of the file name.</p>

How to talk like a banker

<p class="drop-cap">To assemble our database, we looked at all 1.7 million car listings on <a target="_blank" href="http://cargurus.com">cargurus.com</a> from August 2 to December 16, 2023. The local popularity of vehicles was ranked not by a model's total number of listings in a particular county but by calculating how much its local listings exceeded its average across all counties nationwide. To weed out anomalies, we considered only counties with at least 400 car listings, and only car models that appeared at least 400 times nationally. (In calculating political popularity, we included models that appeared at least 250 times nationally.)</p><p>Cars were included in a county's listings if they appeared in a ZIP code associated with that county. For example, a car in Massachusetts listed for sale in 02149 would be included in the listings for both Middlesex and Suffolk counties, portions of which fall under the ZIP code.</p><p>Political scores for each vehicle were calculated using the results of the 2020 presidential election. We included only counties that were strongly red or blue — those where either Donald Trump or Joe Biden won by at least 19 percentage points. We then placed car models in those counties on a political spectrum of reddest (-1) to bluest (+1). For many Americans, election night is a chance to blow off steam after an intense few months of campaigning that included a last-minute candidate switch and two assassination attempts.</p><p>Business Insider's Juliana Kaplan has a story on how businesses <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/election-night-prep-drinks-specials-cannabis-bipartisan-parties-2024-11"><u>are leaning into the election season finale</u></a> with events and promos.</p><p>As polarizing as this year has been, many businesses are taking a bipartisan approach. Whether it's weed strains or cocktails — Kamala Kush and the MAGA-rita — restaurants and retailers are happy to cater to both sides. (After all, for most of them, green is the only color that matters.)</p><p>The homebodies are also set to make their economic mark on election night. In 2020, one food delivery company showed sales increased 20% on election night compared to the Tuesday prior.</p><p>One tech giant is also using the election to expand on its media ambitions: Amazon.</p><p>Veteran anchor Brian Williams is leading an election-night special on Prime Video. The one-off program will include more than a dozen contributors, such as James Carville and Shepard Smith. BI's Lucia Moses spoke to Williams' longtime producer, Jonathan Wald, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-brian-williams-election-night-special-plan-executive-producer-2024-10"><u>about the show</u></a>.</p><p><strong>The election isn't a boon for all businesses.</strong></p><p>This time of year comes with plenty of anxiety. Almost 70% of US adults reported the election being a "significant" source of stress, according to an August survey from the American Psychological Association.</p><p>That could result in workers <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-election-cutting-into-some-worker-productivity-2024-11"><u>having a tough time focusing today</u></a> and impacting their productivity, writes BI's Tim Paradis. A survey last month of US managers from <a target="_blank" href="http://ResumeBuilder.com">ResumeBuilder.com</a> found 38% felt the election had already hurt morale and productivity.</p><p>For many, the concerns aren't just about the election outcome. They're about the <em>reaction</em> to the results. With tensions high, the country is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/election-civil-unrest-risk-kamala-harris-donald-trump-2024-11"><u>bracing for civil unrest after the election</u></a>, writes BI's Katie Balevic.</p><p>One data analytics and risk management company ranks the US among the five most high-risk countries for civil unrest. Instagram will force teenagers to have a private account, enable sleep mode after 10 PM

Full calendars can hurt productivity and well-being.</li><li>Busy calendars can be seen as a status symbol yet can lead to burnout, an executive coach told BI.</li></ul><p>It's not uncommon for Brandon Dock to hear from execs that they're <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/one-on-one-weekly-meeting-with-boss-mistakes-2024-1">too busy to meet</a>.</p><p>Dock is the managing director at the recruitment firm TGC Search. Sometimes, he told Business Insider, hiring managers will play that "busy" card when he wants to discuss what they'd want to see in an ideal job candidate.</p><p>It's understandable, Dock said, that managers with roles to fill would be short on time — because they're short on staff, something he could help with.</p><p>"So you could either be busy every day for the next five weeks, as you claim, or you could take a half hour," Dock said. "Let's prioritize this."</p><p>Dock and his clients are hardly alone in squaring off against calendars with more back-to-back colors than TV test patterns. Yet being that booked can be a problem for people's productivity and well-being, workplace experts told BI.</p><p>The good news is that there are ways to reduce the crunch and for leaders to push back on a culture that implies congested calendars are virtuous.</p><h2 id="91552944-8197-49a7-98d8-d2b8ccd7036e"><strong>Busyness as a sign of worth</strong></h2><p>Joep Leussink, head of growth at AddEvent, which develops software for managing events and calendars, told BI that at some organizations, a full schedule is interpreted to mean that a worker is valuable — even if the time isn't spent in the best way.</p><p>"If you have a very busy calendar, some workers use this as a status symbol," Leussink said. "It has become kind of like a humblebrag."</p><p>There are other indicators (like being <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-skip-lunch-break-meetings-too-much-work-2023-11">too busy to take lunch</a>) that some people might use to signal the significance of their to-do list.</p><p>Kate Walker, a human resources consultant and executive coach in San Francisco, told BI that some workers might feel pressure to keep their calendars booked up so their bosses won't wonder what they're doing all day.</p><p>"Full calendars can kind of look sexy," Walker said. Yet, she said, that approach risks making workers' presence in meetings more valued than the work they accomplish.</p><p>Walker said that she's worked with execs who have suffered mental, emotional, and physical strain from being overbooked.</p><p>"I have a couple of clients that are really going through some pretty heavy burnout right now, based on their calendars," Walker said.</p><p>She said an unforgiving meeting schedule can also leave little time for brainstorming, creativity, reflection, and innovation.</p><h2 id="07316860-3906-47bd-903e-845f724f46f5">Meetings can stand in the way of goals</h2><p>Ethan Kross, a psychologist and neuroscientist who's director of the Emotion and Self-Control Laboratory at the University of Michigan, told BI that if workers' focus is consumed by "responding to emails and balancing calendars," that's attention that might otherwise be put toward achieving more important goals.</p><p>Taking control of our schedule — and not giving ourselves over to our inboxes while we're at it — can help make us more efficient and "allow us to more joyfully pursue our jobs," said Kross, who's also the author of the forthcoming book "Shift" about managing emotions.</p><p>"Most people didn't sign up for jobs to, you know, work on calendar and email for three to four hours a day," Kross said.</p><p>Kross said some organizations manage to prioritize "deep work" in service of getting the important things done by identifying ways to help workers restore themselves so they return to work fresh.</p><p>Kross said that as a leader himself, he'd rather someone on his team work "eight amazing hours" than 12 with their attention fragmented.</p><p>Workers should be thinking regularly about how to be most efficient with their limited attention and time, he said.</p><p>Part of doing so, he said, is considering how they might construct systems to allow for this. For some, that might mean automating calendars as much as possible.</p><h2 id="0fe2e41e-cd44-4b36-a81c-8222d608c3a5"><strong>Do I need to be here?</strong></h2><p>Some meeting fatigue might be a legacy of the pandemic. During lockdowns, many bosses, both well-meaning and suspicious, shoehorned more meetings onto calendars to "check in."</p><p>While some surveys indicate the amount of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/workers-spending-less-time-in-meetings-productivity-2024-4">time in meetings</a> has started to retreat, there are still more than many workers might like, Walker, the executive coach, said.</p><p>She recommends that workers consider asking whether their attendance in a meeting is necessary, even if the meeting organizer hadn't listed their attendance as optional. However, doing that might be more difficult for junior employees, Walker said, who could worry that it would look bad.</p><p>Beyond asking whether attendance is necessary, it's often OK to ask for notes from a meeting, she said. That signals people still have an interest in what's discussed.</p><p>For those running meetings, having a well-defined agenda can keep something that should have been 30 minutes from expanding, Walker said. It's also worth asking the age-old question of whether a meeting could instead be an email, she said.</p><p>Of course, one way of fighting fire with fire is for workers to block time on their calendars for focusing and taking breaks. Walker often recommends this to her clients.</p><p>She also suggests that workers and, if necessary, their bosses periodically <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cutting-work-meetings-can-make-you-happier-and-more-productive-2024-7">review their meetings</a> to determine what might not be necessary. Other approaches include <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/founder-two-days-week-without-meetings-boosts-productivity-2024-9">limiting meetings to certain days</a>.</p><p>Kross, the psychologist and neuroscientist, said that some of the most successful people he knows are "extremely judicious" in apportioning time on their calendars. Some block time for everything from focused work to exercise, he said.</p><p>"They're putting guardrails on there," Kross said.</p>

I'm just — I'm so over it," said Vance, the GOP's vice presidential nominee. "Our country was built by frontiersmen who conquered the wilderness. We are not going to restore the greatness of American civilization if we get offended at every little thing."</p><p>Vance was responding to a question about comedian Tony Hinchliffe's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-madison-square-garden-rally-overshadow-economy-puerto-rico-2024-10">joke about Puerto Rico</a> being a "floating island of garbage" at a Trump rally the previous day.</p><p>By Tuesday, Vance himself seemed offended, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/JDVance/status/1851419418842034332">taking to X</a> to weigh in on a clip of President Joe Biden responding to the Hinchcliffe controversy — and appearing to refer to former President Donald Trump's supporters as garbage. Seizing on the moment, Trump climbed into a garbage truck branded with his campaign's logo in Wisconsin on Wednesday.</p><p>But at a rally soon after, clad in the bright-orange vest of a garbage truck operator, Trump <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/atrupar/status/1851778142580384209">said</a> he would protect women "whether the women like it or not," which Harris and her campaign quickly sought to amplify, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/KamalaHQ/status/1852099368288919577">casting the remarks</a> as an attack on women's agency and autonomy.</p><p>On Thursday, Trump and his allies got their own talking point on women when billionaire investor <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kamala-harris-mark-cuban-campaign-swing-states-sec-chair-2024-10">Mark Cuban</a>, a highly visible Harris supporter, went on "The View." When Cuban was asked why Trump hadn't campaigned with former UN ambassador Nikki Haley, he said that people "never see" Trump "around strong, intelligent women." That's since led to a flood of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/KariLake/status/1852118069138853982">social media posts</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://nypost.com/2024/10/31/opinion/strong-intelligent-women-do-vote-red-and-will-vote-for-donald-trump-on-election-day/">op-eds</a> from female GOP politicians. Cuban apologized, saying he'd unintentionally "set myself up" for a negative sound bite.</p><p>Thus, no one heeded Vance's call — including the Ohio senator himself. The motivation for both campaigns to harness outrage to their advantage in the closing days of the election is simply too strong.</p><h2 id="d6dbfaca-0cdb-47ce-9aa5-cc6735301b76"><strong>It's all about breaking through the noise</strong></h2><p>The last week has been all about candidates trying to create "breakthrough moments" to benefit their campaigns, leveraging instances where a candidate or someone associated with them was seen as demeaning a large swath of the American public.</p><p>There's a lot of noise in the course of a presidential campaign, with candidates (and their surrogates) giving interviews and appearing at rallies virtually every day. For the average voter, particularly those who are less engaged, it's pretty easy to tune it all out — unless there's a moment when one particular event dominates headlines, filters down organically to social media, and spurs conversations at dinner tables.</p><p>Some breakthrough moments are naturally built into the campaign schedule. Historically, candidates have received a "convention bump" in their polling after their respective nominating conventions, driven by the largely positive coverage that blankets TV networks, newspapers, and, increasingly, social media.</p><p>Debates also provide natural breakthrough moments, with tens of millions of voters tuning in to watch the candidates face off. But the last debate was one month ago, and the broad contours of the race have remained relatively static since then.</p><p>That leaves it to each campaign to try to generate their own moments, like when Trump <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-harris-mcdonalds-fry-cook-economy-election-2024-10">did a photo-op</a> at McDonald's. If that fails, they can try to leverage other developments to their advantage.</p><p>Both candidates tried to do that this week. Trump's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-madison-square-garden-rally-overshadow-economy-puerto-rico-2024-10">Madison Square Garden rally</a> was supposed to spur media coverage about his <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-blue-cities-minority-voters-republican-campaign-2024-10">inroads</a> with voters who aren't traditionally Republican, while Harris's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kamala-harris-closing-argument-washington-dc-speech-policty-economy-trump-2024-10">Ellipse rally</a> was supposed to highlight January 6 and her campaign's closing message.</p><p>In both cases, they were upstaged by secondary moments that their opponents successfully latched onto, with Hinchcliffe drowning out Trump's rally and Biden spoiling Harris' rally.</p><p>Outrage is a powerful motivator in politics, and over the last several days, both campaigns have tried to keep up the momentum. It's not hard to see why: In recent memory, both Democratic and Republican presidential candidates have suffered as the result of gaffes made late in the campaign, whether it was Mitt Romney's "47%" comment in 2012 or Hillary Clinton's "basket of deplorables" comment in 2016.</p><p>And in an election where the media ecosystem is more fragmented than before, social media virality and "meme" value are especially important.</p><p>It's why Trump donned a bright orange vest and climbed into a garbage truck, and it's why his supporters are responding to Cuban's comments with a social media campaign. These sorts of moments generate far more attention than a policy rollout.</p><p>In short, with just four days to go until Election Day, don't be surprised if we see one or two more last-minute outrage cycles before then.</p>
