Select metal <keyword id="6354298" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="stocks">stocks</keyword> were back in the limelight as investors bought into beaten down valuations in the sector that has seen some of the heaviest selling pressure over the last fortnight mainly due to global reasons. 
 <keyword id="28423" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="vedanta">Vedanta</keyword> was the top gainer on the <keyword id="6354813" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="nifty">Nifty</keyword>, the stock surging 7.10 rupees, or 5.1 percent, to 146 rupees on heavy volumes of 67 lakh shares. Its futures also posted the sharpest gain -- 4.8 percent -- in derivatives trade. Vedanta and other metal companies such as SAIL, <keyword id="6357147" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Steel">Tata Steel</keyword>, NMDC etc are in an intense bear grip as global prices of metals collapse and demand remains tepid. 
 Vedanta has plunged 24 percent in 1 month compared with a 6.2 percent drop in the <keyword id="35140" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="BSE">BSE</keyword> Metals Index. 
 
Other stocks in this space that are posting gains today are Bhushan Steel, Jindal Saw and Hindalco.

again!

The stock of <keyword id="2734859" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coffee-day-enterprises" source="Orion">Coffee Day Enterprises</keyword> is up 70 per cent in the last 7-days. On Monday, the stock began the week with robust gains of 6 per cent during the course of trading day, following from the previous week's gains, Good Returns reported. The company's shares are now at Rs 72.35, very close to its 52-week high. The stock gained on Monday by a whopping 6 per cent and was up another 3 per cent on Tuesday morning. The shares had plunged to a 52-week low of Rs 20 and has now more tripled in value since then. Cafe Coffee Day is a very popular Indian multinational chain of coffeehouses. It is a subsidiary of Coffee Day Enterprises. "We hereby inform/confirm you that to the best of our knowledge that we do not have any events, information, etc., that have a bearing on the operation/performance of the company or any other price sensitive information. The Shanghai Composite is <a href="https://twitter.com/CNBCWorld/status/541767389256241153">down by almost 2%</a> in early trading.
Still, this is just a tiny pullback in what's been an eyepopping rally.
Ever since the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/china-slashes-rates-2014-11">People's Bank of China unexpectedly cut its benchmark interest rates</a> on November 21, the Shanghai composite has been going bonkers, surging a whopping 18%.
"Equity bulls have benefited from a perfect storm of positive conditions," <a href="https://twitter.com/M_McDonough/status/541262815139741697">Bloomberg's Tom Orlik wrote on Friday</a>. "Policy easing has boosted optimism about growth, lower oil prices raise profit expectations, and the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-landmark-hong-kong-shanghai-stock-link-opens-markets-dip-2014-11">Shanghai-Hong Kong connect</a> promises to bring more funds onshore."
"The trouble is that none of those factors are quite as positive as they seem," Orlik cautioned. He notes that GDP growth expectations have been <a href="https://twitter.com/TomOrlik/status/540852859571425280">stuck at 7%</a> and the Shanghai-Hong Kong connect <a href="https://twitter.com/TomOrlik/status/540853172802052096">has been disappointing</a> with trading flow quotas not being met.
So, what's going on here?
Orlik attributes the recent surge to retail Chinese investors piling in.
"A sustained rally since the middle of the year appears to have lured many back into the market, evidenced by the pronounced rise in trading accounts," he wrote.
The folks at <a href="http://www.bespokeinvest.com/thinkbig/2014/12/4/classic-downtrend-break-in-shanghai.html">Bespoke Investment Group</a> put together the chart below overlaying the Shanghai Composite with the creation of Chinese brokerage accounts. The correlation is compelling.
Unfortunately, this is likely to end badly, Orlik says.
"China's retail investors have an unfortunate track record of jumping in at the top of the market," he wrote. "A 2011 survey conducted by Gan Li, an economist at Texas A&amp;M University, found that just 22 percent were up on their investments, compared to 56 percent who had made losses and 22 percent breaking even."

The deal will let Chinese users invest in the US stocks and ETFs without paying commissions. "Access to US securities in China is currently very limited and we're excited to change that," Robinhood cofounder Baiju Bhatt said, in a press release Wednesday. "This will be the first time many Chinese citizens will have direct access to the largest stock market in the world at no cost."Baidu is a Beijing-based Chinese web services company and one of China's leading search engines. Users in China can download Baidu's StockMaster app and create a Robinhood account.With millions of smartphone users, China offers Robinhood the chance to capture a new user base hungry for stock trading. If successful, the company has the potential to reach millions of users in China, and could set a precedent for other US based startups looking to expand abroad. But it could still face challenges, including China's increasingly uncertain regulatory regime. Chinese citizens face restrictions on the transfer of capital overseas, for example. Robinhood didn't immediately respond to a query about how it plans to navigate these restrictions.The company has appointed Amy Gu, the General Manager of Evernote China, to its advisory board. Gu succeeded in growing Evernote's user base in the country to 15 million in 3 years and will help Robinhood navigate China's regulatory grey area, Robinhood said. The company says it has over 1 million users who have bought and sold more than $6 billion in U.S. stock., saving over $100 million in commission fees. It has raised $66 million from investors including Index and Slow Ventures as well as celebrities like Jared Leto and Snoop Dogg.Five months ago, Robinhood said it <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trading-app-robinhood-plans-european-expansion-with-london-office-2016-1?r=UK&amp;IR=T">had plans to expand into Europe</a>, however this doesn't appear to have happened yet. But high valuations and few profits generated by its underlying holdings fell out of favor amid a period of rising interest rates, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/etf/ark-invest-flagship-etf-aum-growth-value-rotation-cathie-wood-2022-1">leading to a deflation in assets and performance.</a>Thematic investment strategies "are overall high beta, with a focus on future growth, but are also negative alpha, maybe as they pay high prices for 'hot' stocks and themes," JPMorgan said. Additionally, thematic funds charge on average 55 basis points more in fees relative to a passive global equity portfolio."High expenses and negative long-term alpha suggest the universe of thematic funds does not belong in one's strategic asset allocation," JPMorgan said.JPMorgan admits there's nothing wrong with expressing a particular theme through your investments, and investors can improve their chances of outperforming the market via thematic funds by investing in low-cost thematic ETFs, particularly thematic ETFs that are attached to a passive index rather than actively managed."In principle, there is nothing wrong with investing in views of a changing future, as we advised in many of our strategic notes. But one needs to be 'economical' with how one does this, selecting funds that charge no more than 1%," JPMorgan concluded.
