President <keyword id="6359124" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Pranab-Mukherjee">Pranab Mukherjee</keyword>, who is presently in <keyword id="63113" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Belarus">Belarus</keyword> on the first-ever state visit by an Indian President, raised concern over <keyword id="6358165" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="terrorism">terrorism</keyword> originating from India's neighbourhood. He said terrorism remains a big security threat for India as well as other countries in South Asia. <br />
<br /> The President said India has and would always remain committed to peaceful methods to solve problems like terrorism, reported PTI. "Terrorism and extremism emanating from our shared neighbourhood remains a major security threat for India and for Belarus too," Mukherjee said in his address at the <keyword id="2883381" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Belarus-State-University">Belarus State University</keyword>.<br /> He insisted that such challenges could not be solved alone. Such menace could be addressed only with greater cooperation from all countries. Earlier, on the first leg of his two-nation tour, Mukherjee had raised the issue of terrorism while speaking at the <keyword id="651255" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Uppsala-University-in-Sweden">Uppsala University in Sweden</keyword>. "What is happening in West Asia? What is happening in different parts of the world? Whatever be the divergence of views, on the issue of terrorism, I am sure that all will agree that terrorism has no respect for any religion," he had said, adding that it believes in nothing but wanton destruction. <br />
	 

	"It is important for the international community to face this greatest menace, I would say, not to any country or territory but to entire civilisation. The very existence of human values, the respect for peaceful co-existence, tolerance, pluralism are being dangerously threatened by this," the president said.<br /> Meanwhile, Mukherjee was conferred upon the Professor <keyword id="633116" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Honoris-Causa">Honoris Causa</keyword> by the Belarus State University. <br />
	 

	He said India is strongly interested in further deepening its relationship with Belarus. <br />
	 

	"I have had excellent discussions with President (Alexander) Lukashenko earlier today. With a view to further energise our co-operation, we have issued a very substantive and focused Roadmap on the India-Belarus partnership. <br /> "We are hopeful that we can double our trade to a level of USD 1 billion by the year 2020. India's decision to grant 'Market <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="economy">Economy</keyword> Status' to Belarus will also be a significant step to enhance our bilateral trade and to promote greater integration of Belarus in <keyword id="35028" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="international-trade">international trade</keyword> structures," the 79-year-old President said.<br />
	 

	Maintaining that the two countries have similar approach towards international issues, President Mukherjee exuded confidence that India and Belarus can continue to further their respective regional and global agenda through mutual support and understanding. <br />

President Pranab Mukherjee calls for global co-operation to eliminate terrorism menace

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11931698" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="rudy-giuliani" source="Orion">Rudy Giuliani</keyword> and <keyword id="12026145" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="michael-flynn" source="Orion">Michael Flynn</keyword> had their <keyword id="13011900" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="university-of-rhode-island" source="Orion">University of Rhode Island</keyword> honorary degrees revoked.</li><li>They "no longer represent the highest level of our values and standards," the school president said.</li></ul><p>The University of Rhode Island on Friday voted to revoke the honorary degrees it had bestowed upon Michael Flynn and Rudy Giuliani. </p><p>"After reviewing the recommendation from the President, who endorsed the committee's recommendation, the Board voted to approve the revocation of these honorary degrees," said Chair of the Board of Trustees Margo Cook, according to a <a href="https://www.uri.edu/news/2022/01/uri-board-of-trustees-votes-unanimously-to-revoke-honorary-degrees-to-retired-lt-gen-michael-flynn-and-former-new-york-city-mayor-rudolph-giuliani/">press release</a>. "The Board of Trustees supports the University and its mission to uphold its values, especially its commitment to intellectual and ethical leadership and fostering an environment of diversity and respect."</p><p>University President Marc Parlange said he received the recommendation from the Honorary Degree Committee, which evaluated Flynn and Giuliani's conduct and actions since having received the degrees.</p><p>Flynn, a retired lieutenant general who briefly served as the national security advisor under former President Donald Trump, graduated from the university in 1981. He was "awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters" in 2014, the release says.</p><p>The university awarded Giuliani with a Doctor of Laws Honoris Causa in 2003 in response to his "demonstrated leadership in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks," according to the release. </p><p>"Based on the findings of the Honorary Degree Committee, I made a recommendation to the Board of Trustees to revoke the honorary degrees of General Flynn and Mayor Giuliani, agreeing that they no longer represent the highest level of our values and standards that were evident when we first bestowed the degree," Parlange said, according to the release.</p><p>In a list, the committee cited numerous infractions and misconduct in its recommendation to Parlange, including <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/michael-flynn-charged-with-lying-to-fbi-about-conversations-with-russian-ambassador-2017-12">Flynn pleading guilty to lying to the FBI</a> and Giuliani spreading "unfounded claims of rampant fraud during the <keyword id="12175515" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="2020-presidential-election" source="Orion">2020 presidential election</keyword>."</p><p>Giuliani last year was suspended from practicing law <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-suspended-from-practicing-law-in-washington-dc-2021-7">in Washington, DC</a>, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rudy-giuliani-suspended-from-practicing-law-new-york-state-2021-6">New York</a> because of "uncontroverted evidence" that he "communicated demonstrably false and misleading statements to courts, lawmakers and the public at large" in connection with Trump's failed attempts to overturn the <keyword id="11907757" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="2020-election" source="Orion">2020 election</keyword> results. The committee cited his two suspensions as another reason in favor of revoking his honorary degree from the University of Rhode Island. </p>

(Eds: With K'taka leaders' reax) New Delhi, Mar 8 () Former Union law minister and Congress veteran <keyword id="71054" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hansraj-Bhardwaj">Hansraj Bhardwaj</keyword> died after a cardiac arrest at a hospital here on Sunday evening. He was 83. <br /><br />Bhardwaj breathed his last around 6.30 pm at Max Hospital, Saket, where he was admitted since Wednesday due to kidney-related ailments, his family told . <br /><br />The cremation will take place at <keyword id="8885939" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="nighambodh">Nighambodh</keyword> Ghat on Monday at 4 pm, his son Arun Bhardwaj said. <br /><br />He is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters. Bhardwaj celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary on February 29. <br /><br />Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP leader and Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury condoled Bhardwaj's death. <br /><br />"Anguished by the passing away of former minister Shri Hans Raj Bhardwaj," the Prime Minister's Office tweeted quoting Modi. <br /><br />"My thoughts are with his family and well-wishers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti," the tweet said. <br /><br />Prasad recalled his association with Bhardwaj in Parliament. <br /><br />"Deeply condole the sad demise of Shri Hansraj Bhardwaj who for long years served as the Law Minister of India. We were together in the Parliament. May his soul Rest In Peace," Prasad posted on Twitter.  <br /><br />CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury remembered the leader as an "encyclopedia" on the Indian judicial system. <br /><br />"Sad news about Shri Hans Raj Bhardwaj ji's demise. Worked with him as an MP when he was a minister &amp; shared the urge to safeguard our constitutional values. He was an encyclopedia on the Indian judicial system. Will miss him," Yechury said in a tweet. <br /><br /> Born in Garhi Sampla village in Rohtak district of Haryana, Bhardwaj was a Rajya Sabha member for five terms from April 1982 to June 2009. <br /><br />He was the law minister for 14 years and served under the prime ministership of Rajiv Gandhi, Narasimha Rao and <keyword id="6359397" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="manmohan-singh">Manmohan Singh</keyword>. During his stint as the governor of Karnataka between 2009 and 2014, he sternly dealt with the mining mafia active in the state. <br /><br />It was during Bhardwaj's tenure as law minister that Bofors-accused <keyword id="54989" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ottavio-Quattrocchi">Ottavio Quattrocchi</keyword> was given a clean chit by then UPA government in 2009. <br /><br />Sources said he fell out with Congress party leadership after he became the governor and criticised it. <br /><br />Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, former prime minister H D Deve Gowda and opposition leader in the assembly Siddaramaiah also mourned the demise of Bhardwaj. <br /><br />"In his death we lost a good legal expert and administrator. May his soul rest in peace and may God give strength to his family to bear the loss," Yediyurappa said in a condolence message. <br /><br />A tussle between Bhardwaj and Yediyurappa over mining and land scams drew everyone's attention during his second stint as chief minister. <br /><br />Gowda said Bhardwaj will always be remembered for his exceptional service to the nation, while Siddaramaiah recalled him as as a tough man against immoral practices during power struggle. <br /><br />"His contribution to Karnataka during his tenure shall always be remembered. He was tough against immoral practices of power struggle. My deepest condolences to his family members &amp; well-wishers," Siddaramaiah tweeted. <br /><br />Bhardwaj held a Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) degree and did his schooling from GBC High School, Rohtak, and college in BM College, Shimla. He also studied at Agra University and <keyword id="49466" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Panjab-University">Panjab University</keyword>.

It started with him as the Deputy Minister, Industry; Shipping and Transport, Steel and Industry and Minister of State for Finance in the period 1973-74.<br />

Rated one of the best five Finance Ministers of the world in 1984 (according to a survey conducted by "Euro Money” Journal published from New York) and ‘Finance Minister of the year’ for Asia in 2010 (by "Emerging Markets”, the journal of record for the <keyword id="6354424" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="World-Bank">World Bank</keyword> and the IMF) is testimony to his dedication in delivering in the crucial and responsible role.<br />

Speaking to students in Brussels she warned about the growing challenges the EU is facing.</p><p>"Europe is facing the biggest challenges for decades," Merkel said mentioning issues within and close to its borders including the migrant crisis, the Ukraine conflict, the war in Syria, and poverty and war in Africa, <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-germany-merkel-europe-idUSKBN14W2P6?feedType=RSS&amp;feedName=worldNews" target="_blank">Reuters reports</a>.</p><p>She also said that it would be "naive always to rely on others who would solve the problems in our neighbourhood." The chancellor then called on EU members to increase cooperation in terms of security and defence as they cannot count on past relationships as much as they once did.</p><p>"I am convinced that Europe and the EU must learn to take more responsibility in the world in the future. Let's not fool ourselves: From the viewpoint of some of our traditional partners, and I'm thinking of transatlantic ties, there is no guarantee of perpetuity for close cooperation with us Europeans. We have to continue to work at that," she said.</p><p>Merkel did not mention US President-elect Donald Trump by name but seemed to clearly refer to his imminent rise to president.</p><p>The German chancellor is yet to comment on Trump directly, but her remark on the day he clinched the presidency <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/heres-how-world-leaders-reacted-to-donald-trumps-election-upset-2016-11" target="_blank">seemed to be as much an offer of cooperation as it was a warning</a>.</p><p>"Germany and America are connected by values of democracy, freedom and respect for the law and the dignity of man, independent of origin, skin colour, religion, gender, sexual orientation or political views. I offer the next president of the United States close cooperation on the basis of these values."</p><p>Merkel also commented on Britain's vote to leave the EU, saying the continent should see it as an opportunity. Other institutions have given <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/celebrities-who-received-honorary-doctorates-2012-5" target="_blank">honorary degrees to</a> the likes of Jon Bon Jovi, Meryl Street, and Kermit the Frog.</p><p>Ive's specific degrees was a "Doctor of Science, honoris causa," according to the <a href="http://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2016-06-22-nine-distinguished-figures-honoured-encaenia" target="_blank">University of Oxford's website</a>.
