<a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/BTC-USD" target="_blank" title="bitcoin price" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bitcoin</a> split in two in August when the digital currency officially forked creating <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/BCC-USD" target="_blank" title="Bitcoin Cash price" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bitcoin Cash</a>. Bitcoin gold was created when bitcoin forked again in October. And now the SegWit2x fork is looming. Meanwhile, bitcoin <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bitcoin-price-record-breaks-6500-on-november-1-2017-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">continues to hit new record highs</a>. We asked Nolan Bauerle, the director of research at <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">CoinDesk</a>, to come in to help explain what exactly happens when a cryptocurrency splits and whether it undermines the strength of the coin. Following is a transcript of the video.Nolan Bauerle: I am Nolan Bauerle, the director of research at CoinDesk and here's what a bitcoin fork actually is.Sara Silverstein: So you're here to help me understand what exactly a bitcoin fork is.Bauerle: So to think of these blockchains in a very simple way we can see them as cryptographic keys that move memory. The rules by which the memory is moved are set by the miners themselves. So you've got miners that understand the rules and when you wanna change those rules you need to fork it. All the miners need to agree about the new rules about what is a valid block in the chain.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Jacqui Frank</div></div></div>Silverstein: It's just the majority of the miners that need to agree, right?Bauerle: You got it.Silverstein: To change the rules.Bauerle: Well, then you can have a fork where a certain minority believe that the truth and valid blocks are different and that's where you get into this area of forks which we saw this summer where you had a group of miners decide that different rules should apply to a valid transaction. So that persists as a different blockchain.Silverstein: So let's say all the chains have the same history and then there's two separate chains that have moved forward and both are valid?Bauerle: Both are valid according to the miners working those chains. So those miners in Bitcoin Cash from the summer decided that blocks should be much bigger, that every miner should be moving bigger blocks of memory. Bitcoin now moves one megabyte per block.Silverstein: And Bitcoin Cash?Bauerle: Did eight megabytes.Silverstein: Oh, wow.Bauerle: But that was already baked into the original paper when bitcoin was first announced by Satoshi Nakamoto and he had a road plan for how to go up to those higher blocks.Silverstein: Was part of the road plan just to split off?Bauerle: No, there would be chaos and the debate around it is a feature of the technology, not a bug. It was never shy that there would be debate about when this should happen because there is no one in control of this. There are groups of people and individuals that all have their own vision about how this should work.So the point was that there would be no one on top of this, a top-down structure that would lead the chain towards whatever upgrades or changes that would be there. There would be from a fulsome debate and that people would have disagreement and that's okay. So there was never a desire to not have debate about this it's okay that it's rigorous and fulsome and that everyone's point gets through.Silverstein: So then if there's two sides to the debate who gets to be the bitcoin and who has to be the Bitcoin Cash or gold or 2.0?Bauerle: That's really where a lot of the emotions have come in. You can think of it a bit as when you go to a diner and you ask for a Coke and they say, I'm sorry, it's a Pepsi. Right, they're fighting over having that name. In the end there are rules that will help determine so the most difficulty accumulated, the longest chain.Silverstein: So help me understand, if I have a bitcoin and a fork happens, what happens to me?Bauerle: You get both, you get both.Silverstein: I get both? It depends how you're holding it, right? Bauerle: Yes it does, yes, correct.Silverstein: If I'm actually holding it and I have a key and all that then I get both.Bauerle: There are some exchanges who were uncomfortable with the development work behind Bitcoin Gold, a fork that's in the process of happening, and they said they weren't sure they haven't seen the codes so they're not even recognizing that one. In that case if your keys were stored on an exchange that doesn't recognize Bitcoin Gold, a third fork that we haven't talked about.Silverstein: Yeah.Bauerle: Then you're out of luck you have to have those on your own wallet.Silverstein: So what are they gonna do with them because they're gonna get them, right?Bauerle: True and there is quite a bit of debate about that and that happened with Bitcoin Cash over the summer so that just becomes an issue of customer service and how much customers are fighting for what they believe to be their own property and we saw that and a lot of lessons were learned over the summer because this is new and there was nothing on the part of the people who didn't offer that for Bitcoin Cash over the summer. But they learned, a lot of these people have learned lessons and said we have to do better and provide better customer service because they certainly heard it and got feedback saying that this was not given to them and they were not happy.Silverstein: Yeah, I got one of those emails.Bauerle: Yeah, you got it.Silverstein: If a bitcoin splits and you have a bitcoin and a bitcoin fork lets say - because I don't wanna use a specific one as an example - and my bitcoin was worth $5,000 at the time, does the price of my bitcoin now lessen in some of that value, does it split in half? Are they both worth $2,500, what happens?Bauerle: Well one of the beautiful parts around bitcoin is that it is all from price discovery. From the very beginning it's been about price discovery, what someone is willing to spend to buy a bitcoin what someone is willing to take to sell a bitcoin. So in that case when it happened with bitcoin over the summer, bitcoin went along without barely noticing that Bitcoin Cash was created. Others received Bitcoin Cash and markets were created around that price and there was price discovery globally, immediately, and it settled on a number. Bitcoin Gold is doing that right now where the value was a little higher last week and it's kind of fallen in the past few days so it's not worth quite as much. And like I said with the <a href="https://www.bitfinex.com/stats" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bitfinex market</a> we have a bit of an idea of what they're trending at currently before they're even issued. Before the forks even happen, that could change, that could change.Silverstein: And what does all this mean for bitcoin? It seems to be like the premiere cryptocurrency right now that a lot of other things are built on. Does it matter, is this a threat, all these forks a threat to bitcoin?Bauerle: It's in some ways probably a good thing. Think of store of value and that usefulness of bitcoin that it behaves like digital gold or as a store of value. Gold itself to become what it is now to be in all these bank vaults around the world survived the end of the gold standard. It survived the end of coins, gold being used as coins. It survived the rise of paper money, so it fended off all of these other challengers - let's say - and is what it is today. So every day the honey badger survives, every day that bitcoin survives, it fulfills more and more of this quality of being a store of value.Silverstein: So every time it doesn't get killed it's made stronger. It always picks the longer, the better, the stronger chain with more people?So I don't think that's gonna go away I think it strengthens bitcoin. Honda Exec Says Advertisers Are Becoming Fed Up With High Prices For Live Sports [THE BRIEF]

"Ukraine today is facing the threat of a full-scale invasion from various directions," he said, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/14/world/europe/ukraine.html?hp&amp;_r=0">according to The New York Times</a>.
Ukraine's acting president, Oleksandr V. Turchynov, <a href="http://www.president.gov.ua/en/news/30141.html" title="Link to statement on acting president's website.">stated earlier</a> that he believed Russian forces massed near the border were "ready to intervene in Ukraine at anytime." 
Russia is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/russia-and-ukraine-troop-buildups-2014-3#ixzz2vrrMevta">holding</a> military exercises Thursday near the border with Ukraine in its Southern Military District. Independent websites in Russia are also reportedly being <a href="http://www.interpretermag.com/russian-liveblog-chronicle-of-dissent/#1742">blocked</a>, which raises concerns that Putin will <a href="https://twitter.com/michaeldweiss/statuses/444174796423970816">make</a> a move.
The drills reportedly involve 8,500 artillery men and huge numbers of Grad, Hurricane, and Tornado multiple-rocket launchers. Howitzers, Nona self-propelled artillery. Rapier anti-tank guns are also being tested.
Here's some analysis of journalist Michael Weiss <a href="http://www.interpretermag.com/ukraine-liveblog-day-24-russia-mobilizes-near-the-border/#1750">in The Interpreter's live blog</a>:
"While the Russian government claims that these are training exercises, it's also worth noting that those have to be pre-announced to neighbors under conventional arms agreements. They were not. In fact, the existence of this mobilization was denied by the Kremlin until today.
And, as we wrote earlier, the last time Russia conducted "drills," they invaded Crimea. The buildup of troops in Crimea, on the eastern edge of Ukraine, and along the northern border, has the Ukrainian government extremely nervous that they are facing further invasion. History tells us they have reason to be nervous."
It's clear that Russia already <a href="http://www.interpretermag.com/yes-russia-controls-crimea-and-yes-those-really-are-russian-troops/">controls</a> Crimea. Now other states in the region are becoming <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/map-why-europe-is-dismayed-by-russias-invasion-of-crimea-2014-3">increasingly concerned</a> that Vladimir Putin will intervene elsewhere under the same pretext of protecting ethnic Russians who are under threat of "lawlessness."
Aleksandr Golts, an author and military analyst, told The Times that the goal of the Russian movements "is very clear: not to permit Ukrainian troops from moving toward Crimea."

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>President Donald Trump announced tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods on Monday, escalating the US-China trade war.</li><li>The tariffs will apply to a slew of Chinese goods, ranging from minerals to food to clothing.</li><li>The US Trade Representatives office removed almost 300 items from an initial list released in July.</li><li>But&#xa0;5,745 Chinese goods will still get hit. </li><li>We complied the major categories of goods that will be subject to the tariffs.</li></ul>President Donald Trump kicked the trade war with China into high gear Monday, formally announcing the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-china-trade-war-tariff-chinese-goods-2018-9">imposition of tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods</a>.The tariffs cover a wide array of goods, from minerals used in manufacturing, to vegetable juices, to leather handbags. All of the goods with face a 10% duty until the start of 2019, when the tariffs will jump to 25%.While the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-china-trade-war-wilbur-ross-tariff-price-increase-2018-9">Trump administration is downplaying</a> the effect of the tariffs, many economists expect prices for these goods will increase once the tariffs are officially imposed on September 24.The new list of goods that will be subject to the tariffs was released by the US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer's office on Monday.The final list is notably different from the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-china-tariff-full-list-of-goods-products-2018-6">previous round of tariffs</a> on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods, because there are consumer products on the list. The previous round focused <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-tariffs-trade-war-prices-go-up-2018-4">almost exclusively on industrial equipment</a> and machinery, while the new round includes items like hats, TVs, and food.There were 297 items removed from the USTR's initial list, released in July, after the public comment periodThose include:<ul><li>Certain consumer electronics including smartwatches and bluetooth devices</li><li>Certain industrial chemicals used for manufacturing textiles</li><li>Certain health and safety products including bicycle helmets</li><li>Certain types of child safety furniture including high chairs and car seats</li></ul>The USTR did not specify how it determined which products to remove beyond assertions that the official followed an inter-agency procedure and listened to feedback from businesses. Three teams earned double-digit wins in this division last year. At 11-5, the Packers beat the Vikings at home in the Wild Card round while Chicago sat at home, rueing their December 2 home collapse to Seattle. Last year's strongest division looks promising again this year, each team entering training camp with profound strengths countered by areas of uncertainty.
The Bears welcome new coach Marc Trestman, formerly the head coach of the CFL's Montreal Alouettes. Trestman's biggest challenge will be to tame his quarterback Jay Cutler. For all his ability, the Bears passing attack ranked 29th in yards per game last season. Much of that can be blamed on the revolving door offensive line Cutler operated in front of last season. The addition of Pro Bowl left tackle Jermon Bushrod should shore up the blind side while much attention will be focused on rookie right guard Kyle Long. If the aerial scheme and blocking improves, Chicago could be a serious contender. 
For all the awesome efficiency an Aaron Rodgers led offense will operate with, Green Bay will only go as far as their defense takes them. For years the Green Bay defense has thrived with a lead but has worn down in tight games. Health on defense will be Green Bay's biggest concern.
The only team with three first round picks in this year's draft, the Vikings are strong in every area except secondary and under center, which is bad news in a passing league. A quarterback battle of lowest ineptitude is brewing between Christian Ponder and Matt Cassel, and whoever wins will spend much of his time turning around to hand the ball to 2012 MVP and preternatural freak <keyword id="1440411" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Adrian-Peterson">Adrian Peterson</keyword>.
The Lions just paid a quarterback with <a href="http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000216964/article/is-matthew-stafford-being-overpaid-by-detroit-lions">one career victory against a winning</a> team <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/matthew-staffords-new-contract-2013-7">$78 million for six more seasons</a>.

Following consecutive one and done trips to the playoffs, Atlanta knocked off the scorching hot Seattle Seahawks last year before falling to NFC champion San Francisco. The Falcons replaced running back Michael Turner with Steven Jackson and return tight end Tony Gonzalez after he flirted with retirement. Last year's fifth best scoring defense brings in some new faces, with rookie Desmond Trufant expected to start at corner. Will this be the year the Falcons piece it all together in the postseason? The rest of their division, all coming of 7-9 records, look to give them a tougher go.
The Saints defense <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJshw2Axsqc">couldn't stop a nose bleed</a> last year, but they hope a change to the 3-4 defense and the addition of rookie safety Kenny Vaccaro will take some pressure off Drew Brees.
<a href="http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/10458/darrelle-revis">Revis Island</a> floated down the East Coast to Tampa this offseason, and along with free agent Dashon Goldson, Tampa's secondary should drastically improve from it's league worst performance last year. 
Carolina will look for quarterback Cam Newton to take the leap beyond his sophomore season, which was essentially a repeat of his rookie year with less touchdowns.

Washington's offense was a purist's dream last year, running the ball down opponent's throats without abandon. However, Robert Griffin III paid the price for his scrambling last season, tearing his right knee. The Washington offense returns every key piece. While most of the medical attention will surround RGIII's knee, Washington will also return pass rusher Brian Orakpo, who played his last game in Week 2 after tearing his left pectoral muscle. 
While much of the attention in Philadelphia will be about Chip Kelly's ability to transfer his speed game from Oregon to the pros, the biggest challenge will be improving on last year's -24 turnover differential. 
New York looks primed for another year of big wins, perplexing loses and late season talk about how no one wants to play them in the Wild Card, if they make it.
Somewhere in Dallas a running game is hiding. The second worst team on the ground last season, the Cowboys must create some holes for DeMarco Murray to improve on last season's 8-8 mark. Jerry Jones began addressing the issue with his selection of center Travis Frederick from Wisconsin in the first round.

The talent depth in this division is unmatched. After falling short in last year's Super Bowl, the 49ers added Anquan Boldin, Glenn Dorsey and 11 draft picks. The 49ers roster is the envy of every team in league.
Except perhaps in Seattle. One year after a stunning 11-5 season, the Seahawks added game breaker Percy Harvin to an already explosive offense and defensive end Cliff Avril arrived from Detroit in free agency. Seattle's home game in Week 2 against the 49ers on NBC Sunday Night <keyword id="64" type="SPORT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Football">Football</keyword> will be an early must-watch.
Perhaps the best under the radar team in the league, St. Louis looks prepared to break through. The Rams went from 2-14 to 7-8-1 last season. Despite their grueling division, the Rams, behind a bevy of young talent, could easily be this year's surprise playoff team. 
The Arizona Cardinals will go as far a quarterback Carson Palmer will take them. Palmer had a solid 2012, throwing for over 4,000 yards with 22 touchdowns. While the Cards won't contend, it will be fun to watch a secondary featuring LSU standouts Patrick Peterson and Tyrann "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4r7wHMg5Yjg">Honey Badger</a>" Mathieu.
