<br /> As the Financial year 2014 comes to a close, Japanese auto maker Honda has announced some key changes in the top management. As reported by The Economic Times, Katsushi Inoue will takeover as the <keyword id="665726" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="President-CEO">president &amp; CEO</keyword> from April.<br />

The company said, "Inoue has been associated with Honda Motor Co for over 29 years and has served as General Manager in Marketing Planning office in Japan headquarters in his last assignment." <br />
<br /> He has worked with Honda ventures in different markets across the globe including Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, the UK, Poland and <keyword id="87" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Germany">Germany</keyword>. <br />

As part of the reshuffling process, Hiroyuki Shimizu will be the new senior vice president &amp; director, marketing &amp; sales, in Honda Cars India (HCIL), the company's wholly-owned subsidiary. <br />
<br /> Also, Yoshiyuki Matsumoto, managing officer, <keyword id="191593" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Honda-Motor-Co-">Honda Motor Co.</keyword>, who was the representative of development, purchasing and production in Asia and Oceania since April 2013 and was stationed in India, moves to Japan after completing his tenure, HCIL said in a statement. <br />

"He will take over as the chief operating officer of the Automobile Operation at Honda Motor Co. He is planned to be elevated to the position of director on the Board of Directors in Honda Motor Co with the title of Senior Managing Officer and Director after approval at the General Meeting of Shareholders of the company scheduled to be held in June 2015," according to the ET. <br />

Prior to Katsushi Inoue, Hironori Kanayama was the president &amp; CEO of Honda. During the three years of Kanayama's leadership in India, HCIL has witnessed rapid growth in its business. Honda Amaze, Honda Mobilio and 4th generation Honda City were launched in the Indian market during this period, which subsequently helped Honda to pull itself up and slash down it losses by more than 50%.<br />

Following the shift, Hyundai’s Creta already jumped to the leadership position in the SUV space within three months of its launch. Creta’s production has been ramped up by 50% from 5,000 units planned earlier to almost 7,500 units a month.<br />

New Delhi, Apr 1 () Honda Siel Power Products on Wednesday said its two promoters -- Japan's Honda Motor Co and India's Usha International -- have terminated their over two-decades old joint venture.<p> Subsequently, Siddharth Shriram has also resigned as an independent director and chairperson of Honda Siel Power Products with Takahiro Ueda being proposed to be appointed in his place.</p><p> The joint venture agreement dated October 25, 1997, entered between Honda Motor Co. Ltd., Japan, and Usha International Limited to create and operate Honda Siel Power Products Ltd (HSSP) as a joint venture has been terminated pursuant to a termination agreement executed on March 31, 2020, HSSP said in a regulatory filing.</p><p> The company said its board of directors at a meeting held on Wednesday "deliberated" termination of JV agreement although it is not a party to the agreement.</p><p> The board also deliberated on approving re-classification request of Usha International Ltd from 'Promoter and Promoter Group' category to 'Public' category.</p><p> As on quarter ended December 31, 2019, Honda Motor Co held 66.67 per cent in HSSP with the Indian partner Usha International Ltd having 1 per cent stake.</p><p> HSSP further said its board also said the agreement between Honda and Usha International permitting the usage of the name 'Siel' as part of the name of Honda Siel Power Products Ltd stands terminated.</p><p> HSSP is a leading player in power products industry, manufacturing and marketing a range of portable generators, water pumps, tillers and general purpose engine. It also markets lawn mower, brush cutter and long-tailed outboard motors. It has a manufacturing facility at Greater Noida.</p><p> This is the second joint venture between the two parties which has been terminated.</p> In August 2012, Usha International exited from its then joint venture -- Honda Siels Cars India -- with Honda Motor Company by selling its entire 3.16 per cent stake to the Japanese partner for Rs 180 crore. Noriaki Abe, Operating Officer, Chief Operating Officer - Asia and Oceania Regional Operations, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. said, “In case of two-wheelers, India is the fastest growing economy in the world and is one of the most important and fast growing markets for Honda. We are inaugurating our 4th factory in Gujarat. This will make India to attain No. 1 position in all ASEAN countries.”<br />

With an investment of around Rs 60 million in and around Vithalapur, Honda is also generating employment in the region.<br />

In 2015, Honda’s global sales of all products was 28 million units out of which global 2wheeler sales stood at 17 million units.<br />

Another boost to Make in India, Honda launches 4th plant in Gujarat

MUMBAI: <keyword id="45224" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mahindra">Mahindra</keyword> &amp; Mahindra is lining up three major offerings in the compact sport-utility-vehicle segment for launch over the next 18-24 months, as it aims to reclaim space lost to the Ford EcoSport and <keyword id="43777" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Renault">Renault</keyword> Duster over the past couple of years.<br />
<br /> All the three vehicles will be less than four metres long, a segment that industry experts say is going to be a key driver of passenger vehicle sales and where <keyword id="46869" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="MM">M&amp;M</keyword> has only a limited presence. Mahindra is still the local leader in utility vehicle sales, but its market share has fallen to 42% at the end of the fiscal year through March 2014 from more than 55% two years earlier.<br />

Renault meanwhile has grabbed about 9% of the market with the Duster, and Ford captured 8.68% with its sub-4-metre EcoSport. M&amp;M’s first compact SUV, the Quanto that failed to sustain the initial excitement, is getting ready for a major midlife facelift, said people with knowledge of the matter.<br />

The project, codenamed U215, includes major design changes which are currently being worked on at M&amp;M’s design centre in Italy. The U215 will be positioned between the other two vehicles in the pipeline — M&amp;M's first micro-SUV, dubbed S101, which will create a new entry point for the company and be pitted as an alternative to premium hatchbacks, and the probable Bolero replacement, codenamed U301.<br />

The U301 may co-exist with the Bolero, a vehicle that still has acceptance in the hinterlands. M&amp;M intends to do a Maruti in the compact SUV space, offering an alternative at every Rs 50,000-75,000 price points over the entry-level vehicle, a person close to the company told ETon condition of anonymity.<br />
"All three sub-4 metre SUVs will have different characteristics catering to different segment of buyers. Design will be the key differentiator. The S101 compact SUV has a car-like appearance whereas the U215, the new Quanto, will assume a more rugged appearance than the boxy stance it had when launched," this person said.<br />

According to him, the U301 will have the boldest features with a “Jeep Wrangler-like appearance”. An M&amp;M spokesman said the company cannot comment on specific product plans.<br />

"As a general rule, we constantly work on refreshing all our products," he said. The MPV/SUV segment, which makes up for 22%-23% of the overall Indian passenger vehicle sales, is expected to grow in coming years. Industry experts say, the compact SUV market is expected to grow five times to make up almost half a million vehicle at the end of the decade and that the sub-4-meter space is expected to make up for a sizeable share of that. M&amp;M has a strong band of loyal buyers and larger penetration in rural areas, but developing a sub-4-meter vehicle is extremely critical for it to regain its lost market share, said Gaurav Vangaal, senior analyst, forecasting, at consultancy firm IHS Automotive.<br />

The urban sub-compact SUV segment, which did not exist a few years back, is expected to make up for a sizable 20-25% of compact UV space going ahead, he said. "M&amp;M is there with its Quanto, but not with a proper sub-4-metre SUV, so it needs to prepare itself aggressively with more UVs in that space to protect its turf."<br />
<br /> Pawan Goenka, president and executive director at Mahindra, has admitted in the past that the company wasn't quick enough to react to the compact SUV wave and that its answer to compact utility-vehicle space has been a year or two late. It seems the lineup of compact SUVs planned by the company is to not just take on existing rivals, but also react proactively to ensuing competition from the likes of Maruti <keyword id="6911" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="suzuki">Suzuki</keyword> and the local units of <keyword id="70910" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hyundai-motor">Hyundai Motor</keyword> and <keyword id="72707" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Honda-Motor">Honda Motor</keyword>, who too have lined up sub-4-meter SUVs for launch in the coming two-three years.<br />

The person close to the company said the face-lifted Quanto will in fact be an interim model for M&amp;M and has a potential of 24,000 units a year, before an all-new Quanto, now dubbed U321, hits the market in 2017.<br />

The U321 is currently getting developed in the US and it will be a versatile platform that can deliver multiple products, from sub-4-metre to bigger 7-seat utility vehicles.<br />
<br />
While M&amp;M has seen its bread-andbutter utility vehicles Scorpio and Bolero as well as the XUV 500 selling in healthy numbers, its 'U platform' vehicles – the Quanto, Xylo and Genio – have been a major drag for it. It does not quite end there for M&amp;M. Its R&amp;D centres in India, the US and Italy are buzzing with projects. A face-lifted Scorpio and XUV should hit the market shortly.<br />

It plans to revamp lifestyle offroader Thar, which now gets an underpinning of the U platform, a departure from the legendary MM540 base due to upcoming safety regulations. And, pickup truck Genio will be significantly enhanced in its upcoming facelift to take more abuses, which is very common in the Indian market.<br />

M&M Lines Up Compact SUVs To Take On Ford EcoSport And Renault Duster

<p>Nissan Rogue crossover sales increased 14 percent to nearly 14,700. The Sentra small car's sales rose 56 percent to 13,129.</p>

"GM's decades of electrification experience and strategic EV investments, alongside Honda's commitment to advancing mobility, will result in better solutions for our customers and progress on our zero emissions vision."</span></p><p><span>In the arrangement, GM will supply Honda with advanced battery packs. </span></p><p><span>"The next-generation battery will deliver higher energy density, smaller packaging and faster charging capabilities for both companies' future products, mainly for the North American market," GM said in a statement.</span></p><p><span>GM has committed to bringing 20 new all-electric vehicles to market by 2023. That effort will require a lot of batteries, so the carmaker is logically partnering with Honda because the automakers have joined forces before, to develop fuel-cell technologies.</span></p><p><span>The announcement also signals GM's intention to create new business opportunities. <ul class="summary-list"><li>General Motors and Honda announced that the carmakers would expand their partnership to develop two new electric vehicles, designed by Honda, but using <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gm-reveals-all-new-battery-ultium-and-showcase-electric-linep-2020-3">GM's new Ultium technology</a> and manufactured at a GM plant.</li><li>GM and Honda aren't merging, but their EV collaboration is starting to look like an experimental tie-up to pursue new technologies and new markets.</li><li>The history of mergers in the auto industry is uneven, but GM and Honda are exploring new territory.</li><li>The impact of COVID-19 globally could accelerate a wave of consolidation currently underway in the auto industry.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>On Thursday, General Motors and Honda announced that the companies would expand their partnership to develop two new all-electric vehicles, using a GM platform and battery technology that was unveiled last month.</p><p>The battery tech is called Ultium, and the GM-Honda collaboration is an extension of a deal that was unveiled in 2018, with the carmakers jointly designing a shared-mobility vehicle for Cruise, the San Francisco autonomous-mobility firm that GM acquired in 2016 (Honda later joined an investment round in Cruise that brought the startup's valuation to nearly $20 billion). </p><p>In January, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cruise-origin-self-driving-vehicle-no-steering-wheel-no-pedals-2020-1">Cruise pulled the cover the Origin, the first vehicle to emerge from the effort</a>.</p><h2>Operating as a semi-merged entity</h2><p>What's particularly interesting about the new announcement is that it demonstrates GM and Honda working on EVs as a semi-merged entity. The auto industry has been slowly consolidating since the 2009 financial crisis, when Fiat and Chrysler combined, eventually becoming Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, FCA and France's PSA Group were proceeding with a subsequent tie-up. </p><p>Nobody expects GM and Honda to merge (although after the Great Recession, there was some talk about Honda joining forces with BMW). However, Honda and GM now have an equity stake in a company, Cruise, that's being funded off GM's balance sheet to the tune of $1 billion annually.</p><p>The new EVs that were announced this week will be "exclusively designed by Honda, and the platform will be engineered to support Honda's driving character," the carmakers said in a statement. But they'll use the Ultium technology - and be manufactured by GM, thereby enabling the number-one US automaker to better utilize its US production capacity.</p><p>"We are in discussions with one another regarding the possibility of further extending our partnership," Rick Schostek, American Honda Motors' vice-president, said, tantalizingly, in a statement.</p><p>Adding even more to the collaboration was the news that GM and Honda would merge their connectivity technologies, OnStar and Honda Link. And the companies said that GM's Super Cruise handsfree, self-driving system would be included in the new vehicles.</p><p>GM has already pledged to launch 22 new electric vehicles by 2023, and it said that the new GM-Honda EVs would hit the North American market in 2024.</p><h2>Creating a separate EV division, while retaining independent brand integrity</h2><p>For the record, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ford-vw-alliance-announcement-details-2019-7">Ford is pursuing a similar, if currently less extensive, strategy with the VW Group</a>.</p><p>And FCA has been working with Tesla to pool emission credits in Europe, with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fca-fiat-chrysler-automobiles-could-buy-technology-from-tesla-2019-10">CEO Mike Manley suggesting that FCA could buy Tesla's drivetrain technology</a> at some point.</p><p>Partnerships are nothing new in the car business; back in the 1980s, Chrysler collaborated with Maserati. Daimler owned Chrysler in the pre-financial-crisis period. The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance has been going for decades. </p><p>But the GM-Honda effort looks a lot more like the creation of a separate EV division, organized around jointly-designed vehicles, and in Cruise, a near-standalone company as part of the deal. Of course, the brand integrity of both companies remains: GM intends to sell all-electric Chevys, Buicks, GMCs, and Cadillacs. The two new Honda vehicles would be Honda-badged.</p><p>Obviously, the risk here - as with so many collaborations from the industry's past - is that consumers won't be able to figure out what's going on. But the fact that the products would be EVs in a burgeoning market should mitigate that problem.</p><p>The COVID-19 pandemic could also be a factor. US auto sales in 2020 could be devastated by the shutdown of the US economy; during the Great Recession, the entire EV market, save Tesla, was decimated. It's taken a decade for it to recover. The world's carmakers are going to lose so much money on 2020 that maintaining individual progress on EVs could become a struggle. If the future is electric, then the future could also see a substantial level of industry consolidation.</p><p>That would be good for business - but potentially bad for consumer choice. That said, there's general agreement that going solo in the EV market is extremely challenging; Tesla has never posted an annual profit, in 16 years. So while previous partnerships were driven by familiar business realities, what GM and Honda are doing is more about defining a future and trying to get ahead of the evident cost issues, which are considerable given that EVs make up only about 2% of global sales and haven't shown much profit potential.</p><p>As a pioneering undertaking, though, GM-Honda is the one to watch.</p>

NEW DELHI: <keyword id="46362" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honda-Motors">Honda Motors</keyword>, which is swearing by scooters in India, is setting up the world’s largest scooter plant in Gujarat to roll out 12 lakh units annually and achieve leadership position in the Indian two-wheeler market, especially with a growing number of customers shifting to this unisex multi-utility mode that has caught the fancy of many and outpaced almost every other segment.<br />
<br /> Scooter sales have jumped by 29% in the ongoing fiscal, and now form 27% of the total two-wheeler market from just 8% a decade back. The ever-rising demand for scooters that has far outstripped supply has prompted <keyword id="20630" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honda">Honda</keyword> to set up its first dedicated scooter plant in Ahmedabad. “Even as we have more than doubled our scooter capacity in India, we have not been able to match up with the demand.<br />

After 13 years of its launch, Activa continues to be on ‘waiting’ even as competition has multiplied ten times,” said YS Guleria, Honda VP for marketing and sales in India. Honda had fired the imagination of scooter lovers with its Activa — launched way back in 2001.<br />

“Even though we raised our production with three new scooters, demand still outstrips our estimates. While scooter production has trebled in the past decade, we still have a backlog of 60,000 scooters that should multiply in the festive months ahead,” Guleria added. Honda would spend Rs 1,100 crore on the new plant in Ahmedabad, and expand its range with a few more offerings.<br />

The company, which leads the scooter market with a 53% share in the domestic market, would have two assembly lines for scooters, which would create 3,000 more jobs. The fourth plant would enhance its cumulative production capacity in India to 58 lakh units by 2015-16, including 16 lakh from its first plant in Haryana, 12 lakh from the one in Rajasthan, and 18 lakh from the Karnataka plant.<br />

The sales from its Indian subsidiary have already climbed to the second spot for Honda’s two-wheeler business worldwide, and it believes that the fourth plant would help India become its top global market. Honda’s decision for a dedicated scooter plant is backed by an overwhelming response to its five scooter brands which have been runaway successes in India.<br />

In fact, all big auto companies — <keyword id="6357252" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hero-MotoCorp">Hero MotoCorp</keyword>, <keyword id="6911" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="suzuki">Suzuki</keyword>, Yamaha, TVS Motors and M&amp;M — are planning to expand in an effort to cash in on the exploding demand. They have gained from a surge in sales in the first quarter that has helped the segment post record high sales of 1.01 million units in the April-June ended period. Scooters grew 23% to sell 3.60 million units in the fiscal ended March.<br />

Analystssaid that the new generation automatic scooters, that are unisex in nature and are fuel efficient, have helped them grow manifold over the more traditional roughand-tough bikes. “Going by the shift, they (scooters) are expected to corner a third of the market,” said Deepesh Rathore, director at EMMAAA , a Delhibased consultancy firm.

A recent joint investment from GM and SoftBank took the unit's valuation to $11.5 billion.</p><p>The GM-Honda partnership will develop what the companies called a "purpose-built autonomous vehicle" for Cruise, intended to provide the carmakers with global scale and possible commercial applications. GM and Honda had previously announced a collaboration on battery development.</p><p>"This is the logical next step in General Motors and Honda's relationship, given our joint work on electric vehicles, and our close integration with Cruise," GM CEO Mary Barra said in a statement.</p><p>"Together, we can provide Cruise with the world's best design, engineering and manufacturing expertise, and global reach to establish them as the leader in autonomous vehicle technology - while they move to deploy self-driving vehicles at scale."</p><p>GM and Cruise have focused on a fully-integrated hardware and software solution to the challenge of establishing an autonomous ride-hailing/sharing network that can operate in urban environments.</p><p>The deal has led to the rollout of a fully-integrated autonomous electric car - the tech is being built into Chevy Bolt electric vehicles - that is being fleet-tested in San Francisco, Detroit, and Phoenix, with New York City scheduled to follow this year.</p><p>Commercialization, according to GM's president, Dan Ammann, and Cruise's CEO, Kyle Vogt,<span> </span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gm-cruise-fully-autonomous-electric-car-no-steering-wheel-2018-1">will arrive in 2019</a>.</p><p>"With the backing of General Motors, SoftBank and now Honda, Cruise is deeply resourced to accomplish our mission to safely deploy autonomous technology across the globe," Vogt said in a statement.</p><p>"The Honda partnership paves the way for massive scale by bringing a beautiful, efficient, and purpose-built vehicle to our network of shared autonomous vehicles."</p><p>The announcement indicates that Cruise, which up to this point was operating exclusively with a fleet of Chevy Bolts, will see it's technology integrated into platforms designed and engineered by Honda. </p><p>This is a not-unfamiliar move in the global auto industry, as automakers look to share costs by working together on mutually beneficial technologies.</p>    <div class="margin-top">        <h3>NOW WATCH: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-all-electric-chevy-bolt-ev-2017-3">Chevy has built a $37.5K all-electric car capable of a 238-mile range</a></h3>        <div>                    </div>    </div>
