Honda struggles in the Indian car market with discontinuation of nine models in six years

The new form of the compact auto car has with sporty exteriors, premium interiors and advanced features like an all new instrument panel, new and tail lamp and tailgate spoiler. 
 "The new Brio is an all-rounder - spacious, comfortable, looks good, has a fabulous effective engine and delivers great fuel economy," <keyword id="20630" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Honda">Honda</keyword> Cars India (HCIL) president and CEO <keyword id="3257515" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yoichiro-Ueno">Yoichiro Ueno</keyword> said in a statement. Brio is a loved car for more than 87,000 families and with the new Brio, the company expects to strike a new chord with young and vivacious Indians." 
 
The new Brio has a lot of new features including an advanced music system with bluetooth connectivity, hands-free telephony function and digital AC controls. 
 
The new version has .2-litre petrol engine and comes with five-speed manual transmission and five speed automatic transmission, with a fuel economy of 18.5 km per litre and 16.5 km, respectively. 
 When it comes to safety, <keyword id="44883" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> has taken real care of it. The new car comes with various safety features, including dual airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), which enhances braking performance and seat belt pretensioner with load limiters.

Honda launches re-designed Brio at Rs 4.69 lakh

<img class="gwt-Image" src="/photo/51527203.cms" /> To offset the impact of adverse exchange rate, which has resulted in higher input costs to the company, <keyword id="109276" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Honda-India">Honda India</keyword> has decided to increase prices of its vehicles by up to Rs 6,000 from next month onwards. 
 
It was in this month itself that the company had increased the prices of its vehicles by up to Rs 79,000, because of the infrastructure cess proposed in Union Budget 2016-17. 
 
There are six models that the company sells in India, ranging from its hatchback Brio that starts at Rs 4.31 lakh to SUV CRV, which is priced up to Rs 26 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). 
 
"We are planning to hike prices of our entire product range from the first week of April 2016 to partially offset impact of adverse exchange rate resulting in increase input cost," said a Honda Car India spokesperson. 
 
Details of price hikes in the individual models are yet to be finalized.

When asked about the company's plans for <keyword id="45526" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Small-Cars">small cars</keyword> in India, Honda President and Chief Executive Officer <keyword id="2738695" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Takahiro-Hachigo">Takahiro Hachigo</keyword> told PTI: "At Honda, we place priority on trying to listen to the needs, request from the customers from different regions. Therefore, if the region is showing strong demand for small cars we are always seriously considering possibilities." Currently, Honda sells hatchback <keyword id="487442" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Brio">Brio</keyword> in the compact cars segment and <keyword id="8070" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jazz">Jazz</keyword> in premium hatchback category in India. 

	The company also sees prospects of growth for export of cars from the country. 
 

	Asked about the timeframe to achieve such target, he said: "We cannot say specifically which car by when because we have not yet fixed the details, but we think those cars that are competitive in India are also going to be competitive in other countries. So we want to try to export small sized cars from India first." 
 

	Honda's exports of auto components from India have been gradually increasing. In 2013-14, its component exports had a turnover of Rs 420 crore.
 

	Honda globally wants to enhance its six regional operation systems and would like to see each region work on their own development, procurement, production and sales in their respective regions, he said. 
 

	To a question regarding vision for Indian market and volume expectation by 2020, he said instead of trying to estimate the volume, Honda would rather focus on products. 
 

	"India is a big country with a large population and I believe that motorisation will grow even more significantly. Heading towards 2020, as I said, I believe the key will be how many products we can come up with, that the Indian customers will like," he said.

Honda serious about its small car portfolio expansion plans in India

	In one of the very first interviews to the media after taking charge in April this year, Inoue told the Economic Times that his company had recorded profits last year after a gap of several years, which is a good sign. "We have just got into the black, and should be able to register profits this year - even if meager - as we are still in investment mode," said Inoue, who had visited India 20 times, right from the days when <keyword id="43041" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Maruti-800">Maruti 800</keyword> and <keyword id="596" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword> Santro blazed the streets. Inoue further said he is focused on selling three lakh units, and set up a new factory in Gujarat that would make strong foundation for <keyword id="20630" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Honda">Honda</keyword> in India. He also stressed that he would try to optimize the 3-lakh unit plant capacity in Greater Noida and Rajasthan in the next two to three years. He said the Indian company will eventually become a manufacturing base for exports to <keyword id="12925" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Africa">Africa</keyword>. "Yes, India can become a key base for exports to Africa, as our completely built exports are not that big. However, we don't have enough capacity to serve the global markets yet, and there's still a big potential for India to grow," Inoue said. 

	The current capacity in India is just enough to cater to the domestic demand, but once the new plant in Gujarat is up and running, Honda will have spare capacity to cater to foreign markets, he said. 
	 

	Honda Cars India grew 41% till March '15, and with new models lined up for launch, he is confident that the carmaker's "growth momentum" would continue. 
	 

	The new Jazz premium hatchback will be launched in the next 4-8 weeks before the company enters the lucrative compact SUV space next year, based on its popular Brio platform. Inoue, who sees the large population of youth in India as the "biggest sweet spot and opportunity", said Honda will introduce models which will meet the needs of today's youth and expects the new Jazz to serve this purpose. 
	 

	He, however, said Honda is yet to take a call on a small car for India. "We have no concrete plans for India as yet," he said. For Honda, Brio could be the entry model for the "near future", and whether the company needs something in the lower price segment than Brio is something they have to decide.

Honda India's new boss is confident of his company’s good performance

New Delhi, Jun 12 () Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) on Friday said it is recalling 65,651 units of models like Amaze, City and Jazz to replace faulty fuel pumps. The company would voluntarily replace fuel pumps in the cars, HCIL said in a statement. The fuel pumps installed in these 2018 manufactured vehicles may contain defective impellers, which could over time result in engine stopping or not starting, it added. Under the initiative, the company is recalling 32,498 units of Amaze, 16,434 units of City, 7,500 units of Jazz, 7,057 units of WR-V, 1,622 units of BR-V, 360 units of Brio and 180 units of CR-V. The replacement will be carried out free of cost at company dealerships across the country in a phased manner starting from June 20 and the owners will be contacted individually, HCIL said. As the dealer facilities are currently functioning with limited staff to ensure implementation of safety and distancing norms specified by the government, customers are advised to visit the dealer with prior appointment to avoid inconvenience, it added. Honda Cars recalls 65,651 units of various models to replace fuel pumps

The company has maintained that this is to ensure passenger safety. 
 <keyword id="832466" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="the-replacements">The replacements</keyword> would be offered for free in all <keyword id="1467569" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Honda-Car-India">Honda Car India</keyword> dealerships from 4th June. The company plans to get in touch with customers directly about the issue. 
 The company would change the driver’s air bags in 10,805 <keyword id="2853189" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Honda-Accords">Honda Accords</keyword> manufactured between 2003 and 2007, and passenger side air bags on 2004 models in 575 <keyword id="-256" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Honda-CR-V">Honda CR-V</keyword> SUVs (Sports Utility Vehicle) and just one <keyword id="339557" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Honda-Civic">Honda Civic</keyword> sedan. 
 <keyword id="20630" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Honda">Honda</keyword> owners can check if their cars come under the purview of the scheme by inserting their 17 character unique Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the company's official website. 
 
This is a part of Honda’s global campaign to replace potentially defective units. Just a day ago the parent unit in Japan announced it would summon back 5 million units for the exact same reason. 
 
Honda Cars India has claimed nothing like this has ever been reported in the country till now. However, the facts say otherwise. 
Last July Honda Cars India had summoned back 1,338 Accords and CR-Vs to replace faulty air bags. The same happened later in October to around 2,338 Brio, Amaze and CR-V units manufactured between September 2011 and July 2014.

Honda to recall over 11,000 cars in India, around 5 million globally

NEW DELHI: <keyword id="1381889" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Honda-Cars-India">Honda Cars India</keyword> on Wednesday launched its new Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV), the Mobilio at a starting price of Rs 6.49 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The petrol car will cost Rs 6.49 lakh for the E variant; Rs 7.50 lakh for S variant and Rs 8.76 lakh for the V variant. 
 The diesel variants have been priced between Rs 7.89 lakh to Rs 10.86 lakh. The seven-seater MVP will take on the likes of Maruti <keyword id="6911" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="suzuki">Suzuki</keyword> Ertiga, <keyword id="292083" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Mahindra-Xylo">Mahindra Xylo</keyword>, Nissan Evalia and even the <keyword id="6374528" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Toyota">Toyota</keyword> Innova. Its closest competitor, the Ertiga petrol starts at Rs. 5.8 lakh and goes up to to Rs. 7.3 lakh while Diesel starts at Rs. 7.22 lakh and goes up to Rs. 8.49 lakh. 
 <keyword id="20630" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Honda">Honda</keyword> said that the name Mobilio has been coined from English words mobility and mobile. Honda Mobilio's deliveries will begin from today. 
 
The Honda Mobilio MPV is 4.4-metre long with a wheelbase of 2.6-metre and has a ground clearance of 185mm. While it looks similar to the Amaze sedan and Brio hatchback, it manages to be distinct with its stretched out proportions and non-boxy looks. The Mobilio looks the most distinct from the rear as all resemblance to the hatch and a sedan ends with a new set of tail lamps and plenty of curves. 
 
Moving to the interior - the Mobilio gets a two-tone colour scheme, which makes the cabin feel roomy. The seats are flexible with plenty of storage space, with a generous amount of cabin space and good amount of headroom. What is impressive is that even the third row seat gets adequate knee room and can be used for long drives. The interior of the Mobilio is similar to what we have on the Brio and Amaze. 
 
The entertainment system has been lifted from the new City, which also serves as a screen for the reversing camera on the top end variant of the car. The top end variant also gets faux wood fittings on the dash and the door, and faux leather seats. Base cargo are is at 223 L which can be enhanced to 512L in the third row fold configuration.

The Mobilio will be powered by the new 1.5-litre turbocharged Earth Dreams diesel engine that does duty on the Amaze and City churning out power of 100ps@3600 rpm and torque of 200 Nm@ 1750 rpm. The diesel engine continues to be noisy but Honda has done a better job in insulating the noise out in the Mobilio. 
 
The petrol variant gets the 1.5-litre i-VTEC unit producing a power of 119ps@6600 rpm and 145Nm of torque and is peppy and is the same that powers the City. Both engines are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.

Mobilio also gets a bolder and sportier looking sport version in the form of RS, which comes with dynamic front and rear bumpers, projector headlamps with LED position lamps. Alloy wheels, chrome grille, tailgate spoiler and chrome exterior door handles. The RS will be available for deliveries by September 2014. 
 
The Mobilio has been developed at Honda R&amp;D Asia Pacific Co. Ltd in Bangkok, Thailand. "Honda has vast experience in offering a variety of premium MPVs to customers globally. Drawing from this varied experience, Honda engineers have used the same technological know-how and design philosophy to develop the Mobilio," said Yoshiyuki Matsumoto, Managing Officer, Honda Motor Company. "The <keyword id="6356110" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="launch">launch</keyword> of Honda Mobilio follows the success of Honda Amaze and all-new City which has led to our growth of 83 percent in the previous financial year," said Hironori Kanayama, President and CEO, Honda Cars India Ltd. 
 
The Mobilio has been launched in Indonesia in January this year and has clocked 46,000 units in sales. Honda expects sales of Asia Pacific to be at 1.2 million by 2017 and HCIL is expected to contribute 25 percent or 300,000 units in sales by then. The Mobilio is being manufactured at the company's Greater Noida plant and has 90 percent localization. HCIL is also expanding its dealer network to 230 facilities in 150 cities by end of 2014-14, with 75 percent coming up in smaller towns and cities.

Honda Mobilio MPV Launched At A Starting Price Of Rs 6.49 Lakh

The launch of the new <keyword id="45915" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Honda-Jazz">Honda Jazz</keyword> today has further fleshed out. 
 While players like Volkswagen Polo and Punto Evo populate the market, the segment leader has been <keyword id="2452931" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Hyundai-Elite-i20">Hyundai Elite i20</keyword>. What more, the Korean motor company is expected to fit its new touch-screen multimedia system on the Elite i20 to make it a sweeter deal. While the Jazz had impressed Indian auto lovers, its only drawback was that it was available with a petrol engine. Now that it has a diesel variant, the scuffle for your attention just got bloodier. Sit back and enjoy the match. 
 
Engine: 
The Honda Jazz now offers a meatier 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel variant that churns out 100PS of power and 200Nm torque. There is also the 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol engine. Yeah, the same that is at the core of the Amaze and Brio. It generates 90bhp and 110Nm of torque at 4,800rpm. 
The Elite i20 also offers two options. Its 1.2 Kappa Petrol offers 83PS power and 114 Nm of torque. The 1.4 litre CRDi diesel comes with 90PS of power and 220 Nm peak torque. 
 
Features: 
The top variant of the new Jazz boasts of a 6” touch screen infotainment system, complete with navigation, Bluetooth, AUX and USB. Add to that a reverse parking camera, touch-screen climate control, and a height adjustable driver seat. There is also ABS and front airbags. What is lacks is keyless entry and a push button start. 
 
The Hyundai scores where the Jazz misses. It gets reversing parking camera with sensors, push button start and keyless go. However, the navigation and touch-screen climate control would be missed. 
 
Fuel Efficiency: 
While the petrol Elite i20 gives a mileage of 18.24 kmpl, the new Honda Jazz is tuned to give a mileage of 19.0kmpl. The diesel variant of Elite i20 claims to deliver 21.76 kmpl, whereas the diesel Jazz promises a mileage of 27.3kmpl. 
 
The New Jazz has upped the level with its fuel efficiency figures. It has claimed an overall 27.3kmpl, with the petrol returning 18.7kmpl and the CVT bettering it ever so slightly at 19kmpl. The Elite i20 was never quite efficient. It claims 22.54kmpl and18.6kmpl for diesel and petrol respectively. The Jazz has a clear advantage here in terms of numbers. 
 
Price: 
The new Jazz is priced between Rs. 5.3-7.85 lakhs for the petrol and Rs. 6.49-8.59 lakhs for the diesel variants. It is up against the Elite’s numbers that start at Rs 5.30 lakhs and peak at 8.05 lakhs.

your money? Hyundai Elite 20 vs. New Honda Jazz

<img class="gwt-Image" src="/photo/39799958.cms" style="height: 300px; width: 400px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; float: left;" />CHENNAI: Passenger vehicle sales may have shown a definite turnaround with positive growth for the third month in a row in July but month-on-month the graph is still far from positive. While most car companies, including market leaders like Maruti, <keyword id="596" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword>, <keyword id="20630" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honda">Honda</keyword>, M&amp;M and others, saw sales growth in July compared to the year-ago period, month-on-month, the curve is actually negative. 
 
Take Maruti, which saw its sales grow 20% in July with 101,380 units. Compared to the June tally of 112,773, however, it's month-on-month sales graph is down 10%. Excluding exports, Maruti clocked 90,093 units in July down from 100,964 units in June. Similarly Hyundai saw a 12.7% growth in domestic sales at 29,260 units this July but compared to its June 2014 tally of 33514 units, it's down 12.7%. Even Honda, which has been in top-gear form thanks to the success of its new City and Amaze sedans, showed a month-on-month dip. It clocked 15,709 units in July, up 40% year-on-year. But compared to the June tally of 16306 units, sales are down nearly 4%. Overall, the passenger vehicles industry clocked 212,904 units in June compared to an estimated 215,000 units (the entire industry data is yet to be released) in July. 
 
Automobile experts say there are several reasons for the M-o-M dip. For one, June brought the first quarter in the fiscal to a close hence vehicle manufacturers would have billed wholesale volumes aggressively to show better Q1 numbers. That would explain the spurt only in June volumes compared to both May and July. Said Pravin Shah, M&amp;M's CEO-automotive division and international operations: "June is a quarter end which means big discounts which push up volumes. Also, at that point people were hopeful there would be no monsoon deficit so sentiments were betterBesides many companies took their annual shutdown in July." 
 
There are other reasons for the June-July skew. Said Sumit Bali, executive VP, Kotak Mahindra Bank: "June numbers peaked because at that point everyone thought the excise cut would run out end of the month. The announcement about the benefits running on till year-end came in the last week of June." 
 
Critically though auto experts say the current demand growth is driving on new models alone. "The companies that are doing well are the ones with successful new products," said Bali. That roster includes the likes of Maruti, Hyundai and Honda, all of which have successful new debutantes. 
 
Despite that, there have also been production snags that have showed up in the wholesale numbers, as with Honda. Said Jnaneshwar Sen, senior VP-marketing and sales, Honda: "Partly, this is because of low base effect compared to last year. But in our case, it's due to capacity constraint. Our effective capacity is 15,000 units a month and we can stretch it or not depending on the number of working days and export demand. We are currently operating above capacity we had to cut down on the Brio and Amaze production to make way for the Mobilio. That's why we moved the City production to our new plant in Alwar. We will resume City production early September," he added.

Expected to appeal to the below 30 crowd, many design elements of the Ciaz are expected to fit into the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Suzuki+Vitara+Brezza">Brezza</a> after a cost cut. 
 
The car is expected to be offered in 1.2-litre K-Series and 1.4-litre K-Series engine options for Petrol. For Diesel, the 1.3-litre Multijet Diesel is a possibility. This is Maruti’s first attempt to topple <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ford+EcoSport">Ford EcoSport</a> in the compact SUV segment. 
 
Honda BR-V

Honda would of course not want to be left behind in the segment. The company’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Compact+SUV">Compact SUV</a>, the BR-V shares the Brio platform with Amaze and Mobilio. 
 
This one is expected to be powered by 1.5-litre i-VTEC Petrol and 1.5-litre i-DTEC Diesel engines. Yeah, it’s the same fitted in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Honda+City">Honda City</a>. 
 
The car's wheel arches, front grill and sport design suggest Honda’s watching the sub-four meter segment closely. 
 
It is slated for an early 2016 launch.
