New <keyword id="19900881" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi" source="keywords">Delhi</keyword>: Japanese auto major <keyword id="19965528" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="honda" source="keywords">Honda</keyword> on Wednesday said it has started joint research on AI technologies with <keyword id="19896445" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-delhi" source="keywords">IIT Delhi</keyword> and IIT Bombay with plans to develop driver assistance and automated driving technologies applicable in various regions of the world, including India. The joint research is aimed to further advance Honda CI (Cooperative Intelligence)-- the original Honda AI that enables mutual understanding between machines and people, the company said in a statement. Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL), a Honda subsidiary in India, will sign a joint research contract with the two IITs. "The IITs are a home to a large number of excellent researchers and engineers, and through the joint research with those institutes, Honda will strive to advance the underlying technologies of CI, with an eye toward the future applications for technologies that reduce traffic collisions and enable automated driving," it said. With an aim to achieve further advancement of CI, Honda and IITs have set joint research themes such as recognition of the surrounding environment and cultivation of cooperative behaviour, and will conduct research and development while utilising the cutting-edge AI technologies, it added. Under the partnership, for each research theme, Honda associates and IIT professors will engage with IIT students for planning, designing, developing and testing technologies which work beyond the confines of the laboratory and thereby proceed with the research and development more flexibly and with a high degree of freedom, Honda said. "This will enable Honda and IITs to work in a more flexible environment with deeper exchange of academic and industry insights," it added. In addition, as part of this research, Honda with the help of IITs is aiming to conduct verification of driving assistance and automated driving technologies in the suburbs of Delhi and in Mumbai. Due to numerous variations in the road systems and a large number of road users, India has a complex traffic environment where situations that occur frequently are difficult for AI to predict. "By conducting technology verification in such a technically challenging environment, Honda and IITs will refine the underlying technologies of CI and strive to apply them to future driver assistance and automated driving technologies in various regions of the world, including India," the statement said. Honda said it has been actively hiring IIT graduates since 2019, and many of them are now playing key roles in the areas of mobility intelligence, including the research and development of CI.

The carmakers expect to begin selling millions of the cheaper models — including compact SUVs — starting in 2027. GM executives said the partnership would yield a new electric model for North America priced lower than the company's upcoming $30,000 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chevy-electric-equinox-blazer-ev-electric-suv-2023-2022-1">Chevrolet Equinox EV</a>. Though years away, the new, lower-priced models could make electric cars a realistic option for buyers who have been priced out of the current EV market. Today, battery-powered models largely fall into the luxury segment. The average price paid for any new vehicle, including EVs, was $45,596. Bringing costs down will be key to electric cars going mainstream. According to an <a href="https://www.axios.com/axios-momentive-poll-young-people-are-the-biggest-techno-optimists-90b7aaca-1aac-406e-8f37-3aa48142d620.html">Axios poll</a> published on Tuesday, seven in 10 young adults would buy an electric car if they could afford it. Tesla, by far the largest producer of electric cars on the planet, promised to start selling a $25,000 vehicle by 2023. But the company said in January that it is not working on the project. GM and Honda will use GM's Ultium battery platform and will explore new battery technologies to bring manufacturing costs down. "GM and Honda will share our best technology, design and manufacturing strategies to deliver affordable and desirable EVs on a global scale, including our key markets in North America, South America and China," Mary Barra, GM's CEO, said in a statement. The partnership builds on an existing arrangement between GM and Honda to jointly develop Honda's first major electric models: the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/new-honda-prologue-suv-begins-next-chapter-in-brand-s-ev-direction-in-north-america-1030558008">Honda Prologue SUV</a> and an Acura model. Those vehicles are set to arrive in 2024.

GM and Honda are working to build electric vehicles that people can actually afford

NEW DELHI: India has become the biggest two-wheeler market in the world for Japanese major <keyword id="20630" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Honda">Honda</keyword>, nearly three years after it decided to go solo following the split with Munjals of Hero. 
 
Sales in India have emerged as the highest for Honda across its global operations, led by a strong demand for its scooters and a slow-but-gradual pick-up in motorcycle volumes. 
 Honda's fully-owned Indian subsidiary, <keyword id="153241" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Honda-Motorcycles">Honda Motorcycles</keyword> and <keyword id="149019" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Scooter-India">Scooter India</keyword> (<keyword id="121221" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="HMSI">HMSI</keyword>), emerged as the top-seller for the company in July, and followed the feat in August. The leadership assumes significance considering HMSI was at the fourth place in Honda's twowheeler pecking order just three years back with top three ranks being occupied by <keyword id="8692" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indonesia">Indonesia</keyword>, <keyword id="13486" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Vietnam">Vietnam</keyword> and <keyword id="3739" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Thailand">Thailand</keyword>. 
 
"The high demand in India has helped us achieve an aggressive growth rate, which has taken us to the top position in Honda's two-wheeler business," Keita Muramatsu, president &amp; CEO of HMSI, told TOI. 
 
Indonesia had been the top market for Honda in two-wheelers till India displaced it in July. 
 
HMSI - the second-biggest two-wheeler maker in India behind Hero MotoCorp - sold 3.8 lakh units in July (up 33% y-oy) and 3.9 lakh units in August (26% up y-o-y). 
 
HMSI's strong run will mean the company will contribute 25% of Honda's global two-wheeler sales this fiscal against 22% in the previous fiscal. HMSI expects to sell 45 lakh units this fiscal against 37 lakh units it sold in 2013-14. 
 Muramatsu said strong performance of scooters, especially the 'Activa' model, has played a key part in fuelling the company's growth. Scooter sales have been the backbone of HMSI's operations in India and have single-handedly worked at reviving the dying segment after the exit of <keyword id="6358511" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bajaj">Bajaj</keyword> Auto. 
 
"Changing lifestyles, rising number of female riders and increased demand from semi-urban regions have led the growth in scooter sales," Muramatsu said. 
 
Y S Guleria, VP (sales &amp; marketing) of HMSI, said the company is now boosting vehicle production as well as presence in the market as it plans at least one new model every quarter. "We have an annual production capacity of around 4.6 million units. The new factory in Gujarat, which should be operational by the first quarter of 2016, will add an additional 1.2 million units to our capacity." The company, which has invested around Rs 6,200 crore, is rapidly expanding its presence in India and getting deeper into smaller towns and rural areas.

India Largest 2-Wheeler Market For Honda In The World

As the Financial year 2014 comes to a close, Japanese auto maker Honda has announced some key changes in the top management. As reported by The Economic Times, Katsushi Inoue will takeover as the <keyword id="665726" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="President-CEO">president &amp; CEO</keyword> from April. 
 
The company said, "Inoue has been associated with Honda Motor Co for over 29 years and has served as General Manager in Marketing Planning office in Japan headquarters in his last assignment." 
 He has worked with Honda ventures in different markets across the globe including Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, the UK, Poland and <keyword id="87" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Germany">Germany</keyword>. 
 
As part of the reshuffling process, Hiroyuki Shimizu will be the new senior vice president &amp; director, marketing &amp; sales, in Honda Cars India (HCIL), the company's wholly-owned subsidiary. 
 Also, Yoshiyuki Matsumoto, managing officer, <keyword id="191593" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Honda-Motor-Co-">Honda Motor Co.</keyword>, who was the representative of development, purchasing and production in Asia and Oceania since April 2013 and was stationed in India, moves to Japan after completing his tenure, HCIL said in a statement. 
 
"He will take over as the chief operating officer of the Automobile Operation at Honda Motor Co. He is planned to be elevated to the position of director on the Board of Directors in Honda Motor Co with the title of Senior Managing Officer and Director after approval at the General Meeting of Shareholders of the company scheduled to be held in June 2015," according to the ET. 
 
Prior to Katsushi Inoue, Hironori Kanayama was the president &amp; CEO of Honda. During the three years of Kanayama's leadership in India, HCIL has witnessed rapid growth in its business. Honda Amaze, Honda Mobilio and 4th generation Honda City were launched in the Indian market during this period, which subsequently helped Honda to pull itself up and slash down it losses by more than 50%.

Accordingly, the company has begun the export of 5th Gen <keyword id="20630" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honda">Honda</keyword> City with the dispatch of initial batch to Middle East countries from the Pipavav port in Gujarat and Ennore port in Chennai. Till now, HCIL has been exporting the 'Right Hand Drive' <keyword id="6404377" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="models">models</keyword> of the 'All New City' to South Africa since August 2020 and neighbouring countries of Nepal and Bhutan from Oct 2020. "We have invested in creating an expansive world-class manufacturing facility at Tapukara which can produce both right hand and left hand drive models that allows us to manage demand for domestic and international consumers," said Gaku Nakanishi, President &amp; CEO, Honda Cars India. "This is in line with our commitment towards 'Make in India' where HCIL has been manufacturing all its volume models with more than 90 per cent localisation and has been integral in developing a strong ecosystem in the country." HCIL has been exporting models including Amaze, WR-V and City to Nepal, Bhutan, South Africa and SADC countries. Honda to export new City 2020 from India to left-hand drive markets

PM Narendra Modi’s ‘<keyword id="6354869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make in India</keyword>’ initiative is gaining steam as <keyword id="20630" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honda">Honda</keyword> Motorcycle &amp; Scooter India inaugurated its fourth manufacturing plant in Gujarat. 
 
The Honda’s latest green factory is spread over 250 acres and will operate under two phases and will manufacture 1.2 million automatic scooters annually. 
 
The new plant is environment friendly as it is technologically advanced and more than one-third of the total plant area is a dedicated green zone. 
 
Noriaki Abe, Operating Officer, Chief Operating Officer - Asia and Oceania Regional Operations, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. said, “In case of two-wheelers, India is the fastest growing economy in the world and is one of the most important and fast growing markets for Honda. We are inaugurating our 4th factory in Gujarat. This will make India to attain No. 1 position in all ASEAN countries.” 
 
With an investment of around Rs 60 million in and around Vithalapur, Honda is also generating employment in the region. 
 
In 2015, Honda’s global sales of all products was 28 million units out of which global 2wheeler sales stood at 17 million units. 
 
“Today, 25% of the total Honda two-wheelers sold across the world come from India. We will continue to invest in technology, for the Indian market. Through training and cross market collaborations, we want to make India Honda’s technology hub as well,” said Shinji Aoyama, Operating Officer and Director, Chief Operating Officer, Motorcycle Operations, Honda Motor Co., Ltd.

Chennai jeweller gifts Maruti Swift cars, Honda 2-wheelers to his employees for Diwali

In a bid to connect with the Indian youth, Honda launched NAVI (New Additional Value of India) in the two-wheeler segment with much fanfare at <keyword id="2855210" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Auto-Expo-2016">Auto Expo 2016</keyword>. 
 
Navi is powered by 110cc engine and is priced at Rs 39,500 (ex-showroom price, Delhi). The delivery of Navi will start from April this year. 
 
Navi, which is a 100 per cent Honda R&amp;D India model and will be available in five colour options, is looking to refresh the feel and look of the two-wheelers. 
 
Takahiro Hachigo, President, CEO &amp; Representative Director, Honda Motor Co., Ltd., Japan, said, “India is a fast growing economy and the largest two-wheeler market in the world and our Indian operation became the largest volume contributor to Honda’s global production in 2015. Honda’s fourth two-wheeler plant in Gujarat will be ready to commence its operation soon.” 
 
Meanwhile, Honda also announced that it will make CRF1000L Africa Twin in India under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. 
 
At the Auto Expo 2016, Honda also showcased the new 2016 editions of its four current models-New CB Unicorn 160, CD 110 Dream, Dream Neo and CB Unicorn 150. 
 
The Auto Expo also saw glimpse of Honda’s future concept-Neowing.
