Shares of Anil Ambani-led group firms -- <keyword id="20367971" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-home-finance" source="keywords">Reliance Home Finance</keyword> Ltd, <keyword id="6360089" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Power" source="Orion">Reliance Power</keyword> and <keyword id="46907" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Communications" source="Orion">Reliance Communications</keyword> -- hit their <keyword id="10112182" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lower-circuit-limits" source="Orion">lower circuit limits</keyword> on Monday as investors continued to desert the counters after markets regulator <keyword id="19901201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sebi" source="keywords">Sebi</keyword> barred the industrialist and 24 others from the securities market for five years on charges of diversion of funds from <keyword id="19936674" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance" source="keywords">Reliance</keyword> Home Finance Ltd. The stock of Reliance Power dropped 4.99 per cent to hit the lower circuit limit of Rs 32.73 on the BSE. Shares of Reliance Home Finance Ltd tumbled 4.93 per cent to Rs 4.24 -- the lowest trading permissible limit for the day. Reliance Communications dived 4.92 per cent to touch the lower circuit of Rs 2.32. Reliance Infrastructure also declined 2.90 per cent to Rs 205.55. Shares of Reliance Infrastructure, Reliance Home Finance and Reliance Power had slumped on Friday also. Sebi has imposed a penalty of Rs 25 crore on Ambani and restrained him from serving as a director or Key Managerial Personnel (KMP) in any listed company or Sebi-registered entity for five years. Besides, a fine ranging Rs 21 crore to Rs 25 crore has been levied on 24 entities. Also, the regulator barred Reliance Home Finance from the securities market for six months and slapped a fine of Rs 6 lakh on it. After receiving multiple complaints alleging the diversion/siphoning of funds of Reliance Home Finance Ltd, Sebi conducted an investigation for the period of FY 2018-19 to ascertain any regulatory violations. In its probe, Sebi found that <keyword id="19902194" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anil-Ambani" source="keywords">Anil Ambani</keyword>, with the help of RHFL's KMPs -- Amit Bapna, Ravindra Sudhalkar and Pinkesh R Shah -- have orchestrated a fraudulent scheme to "siphon off" funds from RHFL by disguising them as loans to entities linked to him. Although the board of directors of RHFL had issued strong directives to stop such lending practices and review corporate loans regularly, the company's management ignored these orders. Sebi, in its 222-page order on Thursday, noted the cavalier approach by the company's management and promoter in approving loans worth hundreds of crores to companies that had little to no assets, cash flow, net worth, or revenue. This suggests a sinister objective behind the 'loans'. The situation becomes even more suspicious when considering that many of these borrowers were closely linked to the promoters of RHFL. Eventually, most of these borrowers failed to repay their loans, causing RHFL to default on its own debt obligations. This led to the company's resolution under the RBI Framework, leaving its public shareholders in a difficult position.

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="23254035" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="home-improvement-retailers" source="keywords">Home improvement retailers</keyword> are among the first to see a lift from the Fed's rate cut.</li><li>Share prices for <keyword id="20320193" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Home-Depot" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Home Depot" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Home Depot">Home Depot</keyword> and <keyword id="23254034" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lowes" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Lowe's" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Lowe's">Lowe's</keyword> are up, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fed-interest-rates-cut-jerome-powell-labor-market-mortgage-pantheon-2024-9">spending on projects is expected to follow</a>.</li></ul>The US Federal Reserve's decision Wednesday to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fed-cuts-interest-rates-how-much-september-fomc-powell-inflation-2024-9">cut rates by half a percentage point</a> has created a flurry of immediate reactions, but the real effects of the policy are likely to take several months to bear out. Still, some areas of the economy are already seeing a lift in response to the news — and the fact that the Fed went with the larger of the two most likely options under consideration. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/comparing-lowes-vs-home-depot-2023-12">Home improvement retailers,</a> in particular, are among the companies who were primed to come out of the gate strong with a rate cut, and, true to form, shares for Home Depot and Lowe's were up as of Thursday's market close. "Home-related companies should soon see the beginnings of fundamental recovery exiting this year," Mizuho analyst David Bellinger told Business Insider. "Aside from any initial noise in the market, Home Depot and Lowe's should keep grinding higher as all this comes together." And while a rising <keyword id="19998639" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock-price" source="keywords">stock price</keyword> carries its own benefits for a company, the uptick is a signal of a much more important change still to come: sales. Executives for both Home Depot and Lowe's have characterized their businesses as being constrained by low housing turnover and high borrowing costs, both of which are results of the Fed's tight interest rate policy. Home Depot CFO Richard McPhail described his company's core customer as having "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/home-depot-earnings-americans-in-deferral-mindset-consumer-spending-2024-8">a deferral mindset</a>" in spite of being in a generally healthy financial position. In short, most <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/americans-doing-less-diy-worrying-sign-economy-lowes-earnings-2024-8">big-ticket spending on home improvement</a> comes from one of two places: people buying and selling homes and homeowners renovating existing homes with borrowed money. Unless they have to fix something urgently, a lot of folks have decided they're better off waiting to upgrade. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell talked about the impact on the <keyword id="20759748" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="housing-market" source="keywords">housing market</keyword> in his remarks following Wednesday's announcement. "The housing market is in part frozen because of lock-in with low rates. People don't want to sell their home," he said. "As rates come down, people will start to move more, and that's probably beginning to happen already." What's more, Powell signaled in his speech that further cuts are likely if the data support them, which can encourage some of those sitting on the sidelines to go ahead with a new mortgage or credit line with the expectation that they can simply <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/personal-loans/how-to-refinance-personal-loan">refinance</a> in a few months when rates come down further. Additionally, Home Depot and Lowe's have taken great care to manage investor expectations through the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lowes-dicks-macys-sound-alarm-us-shoppers-spending-2023-8">slumping sales and slimmer profits</a> over the past year. In particular, both companies <a target="_blank" class="c-link" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/home-depot-1-billion-wage-boost-improved-worker-safety-satisfaction-2023-5">continued to invest in their stores</a> with the expectation that pent-up demand would eventually be unlocked. (Truist Securities analyst Scot Ciccarelli has referred several times to a "coiled spring" for the retailers.) Max Rakhlenko, a TD Securities analyst, said in a note on Wednesday that Lowe's management was expecting a "phased recovery" in which homeowners start with smaller projects before getting more comfortable with larger ones that require tapping into their house's equity. "We're aggressively working in this downturn," Lowe's CEO Marvin Ellison said during his earnings call last month, adding, "Whenever the macro inflection occurs, we just want to be ready to take advantage of it." Home Depot and Lowe's are already seeing the first of many likely benefits from the Fed's rate cut

<ul class="summary-list"><li>JPMorgan's top strategist had something positive to say about stocks for the first time in a while.</li><li>JPMorgan chief equity strategist Dubravko Lakos-Bujas said investors should get less defensive.</li></ul>Strategists at JPMorgan <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-outlook-risk-fed-hawkish-policy-error-marko-kolanovic-2022-10?utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_source=markets">have been bearish on the stock market</a> since October 2022.But that seems to be changing, based on a Tuesday note from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/jpm-stock?miRedirects=1&amp;utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_source=markets">JPMorgan</a> chief global equity strategist Dubravko Lakos-Bujas.While Lakos-Bujas didn't update his firm's year-end <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/s&amp;p_500">S&amp;P 500</a> price target of 4,200, which implies a steep 27% decline from current levels, he did recommend investors turn less bearish on the market."We are neutralizing our long Defensive and short Cyclicals view," Lakos-Bujas said.The Federal Reserve cutting interest rates and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-stimulus-fix-economy-xi-jinping-stock-market-2024-10">China unleashing new stimulus measures</a> are driving the change in Lakos'-Bujas' sentiment."Policy support from the world's largest economies are coming at a time of surprisingly resilient US growth with tight labor markets, ongoing government deficit spending, and record highs across equities, credit, and housing," Lakos-Bujas said.The bank also pointed to the solid health of US consumers, who have <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/americans-richest-theyve-ever-been-with-164-trillion-net-worth-2024-9">collectively added $50 trillion to their wealth since Covid.</a>According to data from the Federal Reserve, US consumers have about $185 trillion in assets, made up mostly of stocks and bonds, homes, and cash, and just $21 trillion in debts. That's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/americans-richest-theyve-ever-been-with-164-trillion-net-worth-2024-9">a healthy balance sheet.</a>Lakos-Bujas is also encouraged by solid corporate earnings growth, which is expected to accelerate from 3% over the past two years to 12% over the next two years."US corporates have been increasingly focused on recycling pre-tax income into investment spending rather than returning after-tax profits to shareholders through buybacks, which is also helping to stimulate the economy," Lakos-Bujas explained.Part of that has been driven by the AI tech boom, with mega-cap tech companies expected to accelerate their R&amp;D and capex investments to more than $500 billion per year."In our view, these drivers, along with US Exceptionalism, are helping offset the uneven macro weakness," Lakos-Bujas said.He added: "While it is too soon to assume that this is a turning point, it does suggest that a recession is unlikely in the near term, especially since surprisingly strong job growth and a downtick in the unemployment rate broke a slowing trend in the job market."But Lakos-Bujas didn't turn completely bullish on stocks. The strategist warned that the November Presidential election could inject volatility into markets depending on the outcome, and lower interest rates could represent a headwind for corporate profits, particularly in the financial sector.

So as long as you locked in a job a few years ago, there's a good chance you still have one and have been able to keep collecting paychecks.Roland Hesmondhalgh, a Virginia-based millennial has been struggling to find a job over the past four years, he <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-looking-job-cant-get-hired-college-degress-entry-level-2024-7">previously told Business Insider</a>. He said he's been looking for roles in the journalism industry but has expanded his job search to restaurant and retail jobs."It hurts to see so many people and news stories saying there's record hiring and I can't get anything even at minimum wage," he said.<h2 id="bed0d3f4-e23c-4a71-9e01-2e31e5648cfc">The housing market is unaffordable for many Americans</h2>Many people who bought homes a few years ago have benefited from rising home prices. Millennials held $3.5 trillion in real estate wealth as of the fourth quarter of 2019, according to Federal Reserve data. In the first quarter of 2024, this <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/renting-vs-buying-homeownership-wont-make-genz-rich-increase-wealth-2024-7">more than doubled</a> to $8.6 trillion. That's why buying a home a few years ago has been a financial boon for some Americans.For eager home buyers, it's not clear when the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/mortgages/housing-market-predictions">housing market</a> will become more affordable — the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fed-rate-cuts-recession-outlook-economy-job-market-interest-rates-2024-8">Federal Reserve's</a> interest rate cuts, the first of which is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/interest-rate-cuts-september-not-july-inflation-federal-reserve-powell-2024-7">expected</a> to come in September, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/housing-market-mistake-buyers-sellers-mortgage-rates-time-to-buy-2024-3">might not help much</a>.As of August 1, the 30-year fixed mortgage rate was <a target="_blank" href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/MORTGAGE30US">6.73%</a>. But for aspiring homeowners, it's a much tougher market than it was a few years ago.Madelyn Driver and her husband both have six-figure incomes, but the Pennsylvania-based couple is struggling to find a home in their budget, Driver <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-cant-afford-house-six-figure-salary-mortgage-rates-2024-6">previously told BI</a>."We're finding that even in a vast country like the US, housing options that align with our desires for green spaces, a somewhat metropolitan vibe, and cultural vibrancy are surprisingly out of budget," she said.<h2 id="8540e48a-022c-4796-ab25-ed1e7ba5623e">Stock ownership is making some people feel better about the economy</h2>Every month, the University of Michigan publishes a report based on its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/economy-outlook-us-consumers-sentiment-2021-markets-financial-spending-rates-2024-1">consumer sentiment survey</a> — an oft-cited gauge of how Americans feel about the economy. The survey has found that consumer sentiment <a target="_blank" href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/UMCSENT">plummeted</a> during the pandemic and remains well below pre-pandemic levels.But one group of Americans has become considerably more optimistic about the economy in recent years: those who own a lot of stocks. A University of Michigan report published on July 26 found that consumer sentiment among the top one-third of Americans with the largest stockholdings had risen 71% since June 2022, compared to an 11% gain for Americans with no stock holdings. He was also keeping an eye on financial markets to see if they were making directional moves.Over in London, Richard Kelly, the head of global strategy at TD Securities, was on his firm's trading floor, busy answering endless client questions on 'What about this' and 'What about that'-type scenarios."As much as we all tried to think ahead of what the different policies would be, there are always a lot more questions that come up on the day, and they all have to be much more concrete," Kelly said. "So it's just been a whirlwind."Former President <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/election-results-trump-harris-presidential-election-2024-11">Donald Trump's victory</a> over Vice President Kamala Harris has been called for Tuesday's election, but Wall Street is still waiting on one more key answer: <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/congress-balance-of-power-results-competitive-republicans-democrats-2024-11">Will Republicans take the House</a>, too? It seems increasingly likely. Yet, the result would be based on a handful of seats."Technically, we don't need to know until the first half of December legally, and these things are so close in terms of the margin of error," Kelly said. "There's some of these races where literally hundreds of ballots is the differential of Republican versus Democrat. So it's not going to be today."The small tilt in the House makes a big difference because a handful of seats are enough to create some friction on Trump policies, Kelly noted.<h2 id="e4827f7a-5ee5-4a62-aa3b-da6a8ce8b3ef">Stocks</h2>Sector rotations among stocks are slightly muddy because the overall <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/us-election-trump-stock-rally-rise-sp500-outlook-regulation-mergers-2024-11">market is up so much that everything rallied</a> with the broad market, Pappalardo said. But one noteworthy sector is financials, which performed better than the overall market into Wednesday's early trading hours. It's unsurprising since the Republicans campaigned on policies favorable to banks and financial stocks, including decreased regulation. The steepening yield curve is also positive for banks as it boosts their profit margins since they borrow on the front-end yield and lend at the back-end yield, he added.Technology is another sector the market is viewing favorably: Tech companies have been creating a lot of profit, so Trump's promised corporate tax cuts will be quite beneficial, Pappalardo said.Meanwhile, the utilities sector lagged the broader market the most as we moved into Wednesday's early trading hours. Investors moving away from defensives toward cyclicals is likely a sign that investors believe the economy is positioned for growth, Pappalardo noted.While the rallies are positive for stocks, looking ahead, Pappalardo expects things to return to normality. In other words, investors will focus on traditional fundamentals like corporate earnings and interest rate policy.<h2 id="5e50dfbb-c80b-4dee-8272-69eff4f2145f">Bonds</h2>Wednesday was a long day for Gennadiy Goldberg, the head of US rates strategy at TD Securities. He stayed up past midnight watching the yield move before passing the baton off to his colleagues in London."Once the polls started to close, the market already started to move," Goldberg said. "It took the market very little time to start penciling in higher odds of the Trump victory."The swift and strong Republican win pushed the 10-year yield up from around 4.3% to around 4.45%.The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/what-is-a-bond#:~:text=Bonds%20are%20loans%20that%20investors,the%20principal%20investment%20at%20maturity.">bond market</a> was expressing signs of nervousness. This sector of the market is worried about who's going to pay the bill for potentially higher budget deficits. The result is a pricing-in of higher debt premiums, Goldberg said.Additionally, aggressive immigration and tariff policies could be inflationary. And if it looks like inflation pressures are either reaccelerating or just stubbornly high, it could leave the Fed nervous about cutting rates further, Goldberg said.Kelly added that the 10-year could still move higher to 4.75%, and that's where he thinks the market could get more comfortable buying.<h2 id="b628f761-842f-464c-a039-7d296873c4e9">Currencies</h2>Jayati Bharadwaj, a global FX strategist at TD Securities, was at home in front of multiple screens until about 1 a.m. as she watched <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/what-is-forex">currencies move</a> amid the strong Trump lead. Initially, she expected the results to take a few days to become clear, but she was surprised by how quickly the outcome became evident. Currency markets also reacted swiftly against the backdrop of a strengthening dollar."The Chinese renminbi, the Mexican peso, and the euro were hit particularly hard because once markets saw the election results being called, they had to start pricing in the threat of tariffs," Bharadwaj said.She expects the euro to trade even weaker relative to the dollar once Trump takes office. Right now, it's trading at $1.07; expect it to move to $1.05, she said. If the Republicans take the House, then the euro could drop below $1.05, she added.Kelly added that China has been under the microscope since Trump talked about 60% tariffs on its imports. Other countries could face 10% tariffs across the board. So, if you're highly leveraged to trade, like Europe or the UK, it could be very negative for the euro and pound. He noted that it could also be negative on the currencies of Canada and Mexico, depending on how USMCA members will be impacted.On the flip side, the yen could weaken less than other currencies relative to the US dollar. The Bank of Japan may return to rate hikes over the next few months after it had paused, Kelly said. This means watch out for further unwinding in the yen carry trade. Therefore, the next question investors have to ask is: how many long equity positions have been funded at very low Japanese rates, Kelly said.For this reason, Bharadwaj cautions traders about jumping back into any carry trades because there will be a lot of currency volatility.<h2 id="2b454727-3f51-473d-b815-35fcf1e90886">Gold</h2>One surprise is that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/commodities/gold-price">gold hasn't weakened</a> as much as expected, Kelly said. As the dollar strengthened, he anticipated a more significant pullback. Given the uncertainty and volatility that took place the day after the elections, it might be too soon as investors digest results. However, he anticipates further weakening in gold, which is down 2% from Election Day.

Unavailability there could cause shuttering of production plants, potentially furloughs and layoffs," Chan said.Detailed below are the biggest winners and losers of the situation, along with other companies that will be impacted to a lesser degree.<h2 id="bb9e7a39-dfd3-42d3-aec4-ad100d960810">Biggest winners</h2>The international air cargo business of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/ups-stock">UPS</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/fdx-stock">FedEx</a> is the clear winner of the ILA port strike, as high-value goods will be shifted to airfreight to avoid the backed-up ports."Air cargo essentially is the only clear beneficiary we can see in this situation. It's essentially the only way to move products in country and bypass the ports," Chan explained, adding that there isn't much capacity to divert ships to ports on the West Coast or in Canada.He added: "There really are not a whole lot of options in terms of a plan B here other than air cargo," Chan said.Investors are already catching on to this dynamic, with shares of UPS and FedEx both rising 6% in the past week."We think the most direct beneficiary of a strike situation would likely be international airfreight capacity providers like FedEx and UPS, which have significant operating leverage to Express operations," Chan said in a note over the weekend.<h2 id="b875b888-0b77-451e-9d75-2651d2e6b270">Other winners</h2>As companies seek alternative routes to transport their goods, logistic networks can see an increase in volumes.Shares of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/chrw-stock">C.H. Robinson Worldwide</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/expd-stock">Expeditors International of Washington</a> have seen gains of 4% and 5% in the past week, respectively, as investors anticipate increased business due to the port strike.<h2 id="9bc29b04-9899-4dbb-9d3f-0d0cf8831653">Biggest losers</h2>The biggest losers, so far, appear to be shipping container companies that are directly exposed to the port strike.Shares of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/zim-stock">ZIM Integrated Shipping Services</a>, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/cmre-stock">Costamare</a>, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/gsl-stock">Global Ship Lease</a> dropped 7%, 2%, and 2% on Tuesday, respectively.Ultimately, Chan sees the port strike lasting about two weeks, with a lot of it hinging on how the Biden administration responds."I think a lot is going to depend obviously on the political situation and the willingness of the Biden administration to intervene here, but our base case is about two weeks," Chan told Yahoo Finance on Tuesday.Biden, who is known to be very pro-union, has resisted calls to enact the Taft-Hartley Act, which would force port employees back to work while the negotiate a contract."There's collective bargaining, and I don't believe in Taft-Hartley," Biden said on Monday.<h2 id="94183ca9-b0db-438c-8537-399af0c79994">Other losers</h2>A lot of goods movers concentrated on the east coast could see decreased volumes as goods stop moving into the port.That means railroads and trucking companies with significant exposure to the east coast could take a hit."With respect to the rails, there are clearly some near-term headwinds to both East Coast rails CSX and NSC," Chan said, adding that West Coast railroad operators are unlikely to see a big benefit."We see this as a small headwind with no real winners among the rails," Chan said.Other potential losers, if the strike is drawn out for an extended period of time, are retailers like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/wmt-stock">Walmart</a>, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/cost-stock">Costco</a>, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/tgt-stock">Target</a>, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/hd-stock">Home Depot</a>, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/low-stock">Lowe's</a>, as they may struggle to replenish their shelves with certain goods.

The biggest stock market winners and losers of the US port strike

Tesla attracts millions of job seekers annually. The few who receive offers typically face a calculated gamble: Accept lower base pay up front for the chance of a potentially lucrative future payout.Business Insider secured access to an internal Tesla pay database, covering nearly 100,000 employees as of December 2021. That data, along with public filings and interviews with people who have worked for the automaker, reveal the company's pay strategy. Tesla offers lower base salaries than its tech and automotive peers but offers substantial stock grants.Even Tesla's top earners must bet on the company. This high-risk, high-reward system is coupled with a selective hiring process that has in the past included <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-email-tesla-approve-new-hires-2023-5">Elon Musk's sign-off for every hire</a>.Using Tesla's internal salary database, BI looked at median base pay for the roughly 13,000 full-time, salaried, US-based employees across the internal job categories that Tesla uses to define workers in business units, such as engineering, manufacturing, or data management. (BI excluded pay for hourly workers, many of whom work in manufacturing, as it was not possible to accurately calculate their median annual pay based on hourly payroll data.)BI further broke down the data to look at median base pay by job title, analyzing the numbers for full-time, US-based, salaried roles with at least five employees.The base pay for these titles, which include directors of engineering and managers who work in Tesla's service centers fixing vehicles, ranges from about $35,000 to $324,000, according to the data.Nine current and former workers told BI the pay structure has largely remained in place since December 2021 and is ultimately part of Musk's quest to hire only the most <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tells-twitter-tesla-staff-be-hardcore-old-email-2022-11">"hardcore" workers</a>."The whole system is set up to find the fanatics," a current Tesla worker with knowledge of the company's hiring process said. "They could get better pay somewhere else, but we want the people who are die-hard Tesla."A former Tesla recruiter who worked with the company until 2024 said the automaker's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-hired-at-tesla-job-interview-process">interview process</a> for engineers — which typically entails at least nine interviews and can take months — and the company's pay structure are designed to weed out workers who are looking to just "clock in and clock out.""It's a culture thing," the former recruiter said. "It's not even about how smart you are or how much you know. They're looking for a willingness to learn and put in the extra hours."Tesla, Musk, and the company's board of directors did not respond to requests for comment.In a December 2023 <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1318605/000162828024002390/tsla-20231231.htm">regulatory filing</a>, Tesla reported it employed more than 140,000 people worldwide. In April, Tesla told staff it planned to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-sent-tesla-employees-email-announcing-layoffs-read-memo-2024-4">cut more than 10% of its workforce</a>. A June <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/06/21/tesla-has-downsized-by-at-least-14percent-this-year-internal-number-shows.html#:~:text=Tesla%20internal%20records%20viewed%20by,includes%20hourly%20and%20salaried%20workers.">estimate</a> from CNBC placed Tesla's headcount at just over 120,000.Using separate data from the Securities and Exchange Commission, BI compared the company's median base pay with that of traditional automakers and the six largest tech firms by market cap. Tesla lags behind all of them except Amazon. While there are a variety of factors that can affect a company's median salary — for example, Amazon's large warehouse workforce or Apple's large retail workforce — the data is consistent with what four current and former Tesla employees say: Tesla's base salaries are generally less than competitors'.Nvidia, Ford, Meta, and Amazon declined to comment on their employee compensation packages. Apple, Microsoft, and Alphabet did not respond to a request for comment. GM said it has doubled its staff in Silicon Valley over the past six months and is competitive in hiring talent away from tech firms.Nine current and former people in engineering and sales said that Tesla's stock grants make it easier to accept lower base salaries. Tesla stock could make them rich, if only on paper. On November 8, the automaker's stock surged more 8% in the wake of Donald Trump's re-election, hitting a market cap of $1 trillion.Some Tesla employees can receive millions of dollars in stock. In 2020 and 2021, 44 US-based employees were offered stock worth more than $1 million, according to the database.To get a sense of which employees were more likely to take home large grants, BI broke up stock grants based on job category. The data show that most workers in engineering received stock grants above $25,000. The value of the stock is based on the value of the shares at the time they were granted, but it's subject to change based on Tesla's share price.Of the stock offerings at Tesla, about 75% were restricted stock units, or RSUs, while nonqualified stock options made up 21%, and were given exclusively as merit-based compensation, according to BI's analysis of US-based, full-time workers. Only 4% of employees — including many executives and other high-level workers — received the stock as incentive stock options, or ISOs.Zaheer Mohiuddin, the cofounder of <a target="_blank" href="http://Levels.fyi">Levels.fyi</a>, said RSUs are very common in tech, while incentive stock options are typically reserved for longtime high-level employees or nonpublic companies. RSUs are typically included in standard compensation packages, while nonqualified stock options and ISOs are often used as additional incentives.RSUs give employees actual shares that vest over time, while ISOs simply provide the right to purchase stock at a preset price before expiration — which is potentially profitable if the stock price rises above that level, but also requires the employee to have money on hand to pay for the stock in the first place.Outside of one person within Tesla's executive job category who had no stock amount listed, Tesla executives received stock offerings worth between $950,000 and $20 million, according to the database, which displayed the latest stock amount for each employee as of December 2021. All but one of the executives' offerings were ISOs.Tesla is far from the first company to enhance base pay with stock grants. Companies like Meta, Google, and Amazon have been known to offer employees healthy stock grants. Employee survey data from 2024 from the compensation-benchmarking company <a target="_blank" href="http://Levels.fyi">Levels.fyi</a> found that Tesla's median base pay and stock grants for US-based software engineers are slightly lower than that of US-based software engineers at Meta, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, and Alphabet, collectively.Over the past five years, Tesla's stock has spiked well over 1,000%; that performance potentially makes those grants attractive.Greg Selker, a managing director at the executive recruitment firm Stanton Chase, told BI that while other Big Tech companies might have higher base pay and equity grants to match, Tesla's strength also lies in its image."There's a mission-driven element to it that allows Tesla to get away with paying less," Selker said. "These people are working to bring about the decarbonization of the planet."Musk has previously described what the stock options can do for employees. "We give everyone stock options; we've made many people who are just working the line — who didn't even know what stocks were — we've made them millionaires," he <a target="_blank" href="https://fortune.com/2023/11/30/tesla-elon-mus-unionize-staff-millionaires-stock-options/">said</a> last year.BI examined the median stock grants and the percentage of employees who received grants for each job category and found that a majority of workers in nearly every category received some type of stock grant.Tesla's pay strategy has more in common with other Silicon Valley companies like Google or Meta than it does with traditional automakers, Harley Shaiken, an auto industry and labor expert, told BI. Traditional automakers like GM or Ford rely on higher base pay while companies like Tesla, which has seen higher stock returns over the past five years, can attract talent through stock grants, Shaiken said."Tech workers are looking for the opportunity for a big payday, not just an incremental salary bump," he said.One former sales manager said Tesla's stock offerings initially attracted him to the role, but he compared them to "golden handcuffs.""The stock is the major hook. You might be unhappy in your role, but you just decide, 'I'm going to keep my head down and wait a few months longer until I vest,'" he said.Tesla's stock offerings have given some workers opportunities for major paydays. Drew Baglino, Tesla's former senior vice president of powertrain and energy engineering, and Zachary Kirkhorn, the former CFO, were awarded $20 million each.Other executives, including Musk's right-hand man Omead Afshar, received $10 million in stock offerings, according to the database."It's part of the benefit of taking a chance on a company like Tesla," one engineer who joined the company in 2015 told BI. "You might have to deal with the aches and pains of a startup — the long hours, some of the uncertainty — but there can also be a significant payoff."Aaron Greenspan, a vocal critic of Musk and the founder of PlainSite, an organization that provides access to legal documents and advocates for legal transparency, first referenced Afshar's stock grant in a lawsuit filed against defendants including Musk and Tesla, accusing them of defamation, among other claims. Lawyers for Musk and Tesla have called his claims "largely unintelligible allegations." The lawsuit is ongoing.Tesla awards stock grants with promotions and annual reviews and bases them on the company's performance, according to the salary database and conversations with four current employees. Last year, the company cut back on merit-based stock awards for staff, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-12-19/tesla-skips-merit-based-stock-awards-squeezing-compensation">Bloomberg reported</a> and the four employees told BI. In June, Musk told staff he planned to award <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-stock-option-grants-awards-elon-musk-email-2024-6#:~:text=Tesla%20will%20reward%20employees%20for,at%20Tesla%20earlier%20this%20year.">additional stock grants for "exceptional performance."</a> During annual performance reviews in July, managers were limited to recommending no more than 20% of their team to be considered for the extra award, two people with knowledge said. Tesla typically awards employees restricted stock units that vest over a period of four years, the data show.Selker said historically Tesla workers have been able to count on their stock continuing to grow."It's a bet they have to make," he said. So far, stock grants have "proven to be better than cash in your pocket.""Now, if the stock were to become inconsistent or halve, then Tesla will have to change its strategy," he added.Tesla's stock has experienced significant volatility this year, slumping as low as 44% in mid-April from its price at the start of the year. Following a failed merger with <keyword id="20245146" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="JetBlue-Airways" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="JetBlue Airways" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="JetBlue Airways">JetBlue Airways</keyword>, Spirit had been grappling with heavy losses, making it difficult to manage its $3.3 billion debt load that includes $1.1 billion of secured bonds due within the next year, The Wall Street Journal <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/spirit-airlines-in-talks-with-bondholders-over-terms-of-potential-bankruptcy-filing-fdd23fae?st=oS9e7Q&amp;reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink">reported</a> late Thursday. While Spirit faces a turbulent future with a potential Chapter 11 filing, it isn't necessarily a death sentence for the airline. Rather, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/credit-score/what-is-chapter-11-bankruptcy">Chapter 11</a> allows businesses to reorganize their debts while continuing their operations. Other airlines have used the process to stay afloat. In 2005, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-went-bankrupt-bounced-back-successful#delta-air-lines-filed-for-bankruptcy-in-2005-and-spent-a-year-and-a-half-restructuring-3" target="_blank">Delta Air Lines</a> filed for bankruptcy after shedding 6,000 jobs and slashing $1 billion in labor costs. By optimizing its Atlanta hub and increasing its international routes, the company recovered from its financial troubles and remains one of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-and-worst-airlines-in-the-us-according-to-the-points-guy-2024-6" target="_blank">largest airlines</a> in the US. A potential bankruptcy filing could serve as a similar lifeline for Spirit's management of debt and finances. This came as Spirit <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spirit-airlines-ticket-changes-bundled-fares-bags-snacks-premium-seats-2024-7">bumped</a> its ticketing prices in July, shifting away from its ultra-low-cost model to boost revenue after suffering a $143 million loss in the first quarter of this year and a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airlines-spirit-southwest-jetblue-struggle-profit-scrambling-changes-tickets-seats-2024-8">$193 million</a> loss in the second quarter.
