Rumours that<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Is-India-better-prepared-for-an-ISIS-led-Mumbai-like-attack-The-answer-is-a-resounding-No/articleshow/49805008.cms"> India is one of the most vulnerable states to the threat of terrorism</a> cannot be ignored. As, India ranks sixth among the 10 countries most impacted by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Gurdaspur-terror-attack-Operation-over-all-terrorists-killed/articleshow/48238586.cms">terrorism in 2014</a>, according to Global Terrorism Index 2015 (GTI) which said that <keyword id="174501" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="ISIS">ISIS</keyword> and <keyword id="184592" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Boko-Haram">Boko Haram</keyword> are now jointly responsible for more than half of all global fatalities from terrorist attacks. 

	India witnessed a slight increase in terror-related deaths, up by 1.2 per cent in 2014 to reach a total of 416, the highest number of terrorist incidents and deaths since 2010. 
 

	There were 763 incidents which represent a 20 per cent increase from 2013, the report by Washington-based Institute for Economics and Peace said. 
 In India, the two deadliest Islamic terrorist groups in 2014 were <keyword id="53557" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lashkar-e-Taiba">Lashkar-e-Taiba</keyword> (LeT) and Hizbul Mujahideen. 

	The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/US-minces-no-words-sends-a-clear-cut-message-to-Pakistan-on-terror/articleshow/48742861.cms">Pakistan-based LeT</a> was responsible for 24 deaths in 2014, while Hizbul Mujahideen was responsible for 11 deaths in 2014, down from 30 deaths in the previous year. 
 

	In 2013 Hizbul Mujahideen was the only group in India to use suicide tactics, but in 2014 there were no suicide attacks in India, the report added. 
 

	It said that the number of lives lost to terrorism around the world increased by 80 per cent in 2014, reaching the highest level ever recorded at 32,658 as compared to 18,111 in 2013. 
 

	Pakistan was ranked fourth of the list while the US was ranked 35th among the nations most impacted by terrorism.
 

	The report added that just two terrorist groups,<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/FBI-New-York-police-aware-of-Islamic-State-video-say-no-specific-threat/articleshow/49842251.cms"> ISIS </a>and Boko Haram, are now jointly responsible for 51 per cent of all global fatalities from claimed terrorist attacks. 
 "Boko Haram, which pledged its allegiance to ISIL as the Islamic State's <keyword id="860773" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="west-Africa">West Africa</keyword> Province (ISWAP) in March 2015, has become the world's deadliest terrorist group, causing 6,644 deaths compared to ISIL's 6,073," it said. 

	India has featured 14 times in the 10 countries most affected by terrorism for the 2000-2014 period. 
 

	While India continues to be among the 10 countries most impacted by terrorism, 2014 was the first time since 2000 that India did not feature among the ten countries with highest fatalities from terrorism. 
 

	"However this is due to the growth of terrorism in other countries more than to an improvement in India," the report said adding that majority of terrorist attacks in India have low casualties. 
 

	In 2014 around 70 per cent of attacks in India were non-lethal. Of the 50 different terrorist groups that engaged in a terrorist act in 2014, 28 groups did not kill anyone, it said. 
 

	The report categorised terrorism in India into three distinct groups of communists, Islamists and separatist. 
 

	It said communist terrorist groups are "by far the most frequent perpetrators" and the main cause of deaths in India. 
 

	Two Maoist communist groups claimed responsibility for 172 deaths in 2014, which constitutes 41 per cent of all deaths from terrorism. 
 

	Police are overwhelmingly the biggest targets of Maoists, accounting for over half of the deaths. 
 

	Kidnapping is also a common tactic of the Maoists where it is often used as a political tool to force the government to release Maoist prisoners. 
 The majority of Maoist attacks occurred in the provinces of <keyword id="30033" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bihar">Bihar</keyword>, <keyword id="43945" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chhattisgarh">Chhattisgarh</keyword> and Jharkhand, the report said. 

	The dispute with Pakistan over Jammu and Kashmir is the main source of Islamic terrorism. 
 

	Islamist terrorists were responsible for 57 deaths in this region, which is 14 per cent of the total deaths in India from terrorism, the report said. 
 

	The report noted that the announcement in September 2014 that Al-Qaida was establishing a presence in India has not led to a dramatic increase in terrorism by the group. 
 

	It further said that India's north-east region has for the last three decades seen continual ethno-political unrest from ethnic secessionist movements. 
 

	It termed the National Democratic Front of Bodoland as the second deadliest group in India in 2014 responsible for killing 80 people in 2014. 
 Globally, terrorism is highly concentrated in just five countries - Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan and <keyword id="6354913" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Syria">Syria</keyword> - accounting for 78 per cent of all deaths in 2014. 

	Iraq continues to be the country most impacted by terrorism, with 3,370 attacks killing 9,929 people, the highest number of terrorism incidents and fatalities ever recorded by a single country. 
 

	Nigeria recorded the largest increase in deaths from terrorism, rising by over 300% to 7,512 fatalities. 
 

	The economic cost of terrorism reached its highest ever level in 2014 at $52.9 billion, an increase of 61 per cent from the previous year's total of $32.9 billion, and a tenfold increase since 2000. 
 

	"The significant increase in terrorist activity has meant that its ramifications are being felt more widely throughout the world. What is most striking from our analysis is how the drivers of terrorism differ between more and less developed countries. In the West, socio-economic factors such as youth unemployment and drug crime correlate with terrorism. 
 

	"In non-OECD countries, terrorism shows stronger associations with ongoing conflict, corruption and violence," IEP Executive Chairman Steve Killelea said. 
 

	"Ten of the eleven countries most affected by terrorism also have the highest rates of refugees and internal displacement. This highlights the strong inter-connectedness between the current refugee crisis, terrorism and conflict." 
 

	The flow of foreign fighters into Iraq and Syria since 2011 is the largest influx in modern times. 
 

	Current estimates now range from 25,000 to 30,000 fighters, from roughly 100 countries. 
 

	Half of the foreign fighters travelling to Iraq and Syria are from neighbouring countries and a quarter from Europe and Turkey. 
 

	The flow of foreign fighters does not appear to be diminishing, with over 7,000 arriving in the first six months of 2015, it said.

India ranks 6th among 10 countries most impacted by terrorism

The recent attack on the Pathankot air base has brought the terror group <keyword id="205704" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jaish-e-Mohammad">Jaish-e-Mohammad</keyword> (<keyword id="6399588" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jem">JeM</keyword>) back in limelight, which is led by <keyword id="164868" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Maulana-Masood-Azhar">Maulana Masood Azhar</keyword> and has also been accused of the 2001 Parliament attacks. 
 
Owing to its terrorist activities, United Nations had in the past attempted to ban the JeM, but couldn’t do so because of China's stubbornness on the matter at the request of Pakistan. 
 
JeM has been announced a terrorist organisation in several countries like Australia, Canada, India, the UAE, the UK and the US. 
 In 2009, India had requested the <keyword id="55859" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="UN-Security-Council">UN Security Council</keyword> to ban Azhar but China, which happens to be one of the five permanent members of the group with Veto Powers, didn’t allow the ban. This was perhaps at the request of Pakistan, from where the organisation operates. 
This happened despite the then UPA government providing all the detailed information, about Azhar's involvement in terror activities in India, to China. 
 
However, China argued that the information wasn’t sufficient enough to establish Azhar's involvement in terrorism, as per ET. 
 In 2010, India's request to name Azhar, and <keyword id="218693" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Abdur-Rehman-Makki">Abdur Rehman Makki</keyword> and <keyword id="234365" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Azam-Cheema">Azam Cheema</keyword> of Lashkar on the 1267 sanctions list of the UN was also put on "technical hold" by China. 
 This is not the only case when China didn’t support India in its fight against terrorism. Last year, China had blocked India’s effort to question Pakistan at the <keyword id="45167" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="UNSC">UNSC</keyword> (as per resolution 1267). The questioning was to be done over the release of <keyword id="147423" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Zaki-ur-Rehman-Lakhvi">Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi</keyword>, the <keyword id="41305" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="LeT">LeT</keyword> commander and the brain behind 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. The same “insufficient information" alibi was used in this matter as well. 
 Also, Beijing has thrice blocked India's bids to get <keyword id="44125" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jamaat-ud-Dawa">Jamaat-ud-Dawa</keyword> added to the UNSC terror list, which was finally done in December 2008. Not only this, China also stalled India's effort to get <keyword id="50913" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hizbul-Mujahideen">Hizbul Mujahideen</keyword>'s <keyword id="105621" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Syed-Salahuddin">Syed Salahuddin</keyword> added to the 1267 sanctions list early last year.

China isn’t agreeing to UN’s attempt to ban Masood Azhar, one of India’s most wanted terrorists!

A court on Tuesday granted two-hour custody parole to <keyword id="22243221" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kashmiri-leader" source="keywords">Kashmiri leader</keyword> <keyword id="834128" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sheikh-Abdul-Rashid" source="Orion">Sheikh Abdul Rashid</keyword> to take oath as a Lok Sabha <keyword id="19904133" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MP" source="keywords">MP</keyword> on July 5. Rashid, also known as <keyword id="21038061" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Engineer-Rashid" source="keywords">Engineer Rashid</keyword>, was elected from Baramulla seat as an independent candidate defeating National Conference leader Omar Abdullah in the recent Lok Sabha polls. He was <keyword id="19900069" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="arrested" source="keywords">arrested</keyword> in a 2017 Jammu and Kashmir <keyword id="20041532" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="terror-funding-case" source="keywords">terror funding case</keyword>. Rashid had moved the court seeking interim bail, or custody parole in the alternative, to take oath and perform his parliamentary functions. Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh allowed custody parole for two hours on July 5 to enable him to take oath. A detailed order is awaited. On Monday, the <keyword id="19907350" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NIA" source="keywords">NIA</keyword>'s counsel did not oppose Rashid's plea and said his oath taking should be subject to some conditions like not speaking to the media and completing all formalities within a day. Rashid has been in jail since 2019 after he was charged by the NIA under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for his alleged involvement in a terror funding case. He is currently lodged in <keyword id="20147871" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tihar-Jail" source="keywords">Tihar jail</keyword>. The former MLA's name cropped up during the investigation of Kashmiri businessman Zahoor Watali, who the NIA had arrested for allegedly funding terrorist groups and separatists in the Kashmir valley. The NIA had filed a charge sheet against several individuals, including Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik, Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed and Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin in the case. Malik was awarded life imprisonment by a trial court in 2022 after he pleaded guilty to the charges.

Court allows two-hour custody parole to Kashmiri leader Sheikh Abdul Rashid to take oath as Lok Sabha MP

Top 5 most wanted terrorists in India that still roam free

In a rather power-packed speech at the 71st <keyword id="6355833" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-nations">United Nations</keyword> General Assembly in New York, Minister for External Affairs <keyword id="6355111" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sushma-Swaraj">Sushma Swaraj</keyword> literally tore apart Pakistan Prime Minister <keyword id="6576" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nawaz-Sharif">Nawaz Sharif</keyword>’s claims on human rights violations in Kashmir as well as its record on fighting terrorism. 
 Sharif had on 21 September sought an international probe into what he described as “extrajudicial killings” in Indian Kashmir—in a reference to the unrest in the region following the death on 8 July of Burhan Wani, who India says was a <keyword id="50913" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hizbul-Mujahideen">Hizbul Mujahideen</keyword> group terrorist. 
Retaliating, Swaraj said- “I can only say that those accusing others of human rights violations would do well to introspect and see what egregious abuses they are perpetrating in their own country, including in Balochistan.” 
 
Mincing no words, Swaraj further said that in exchange of friendship with the neighbouring country, India always got terrorism in return — in the form of Pathankot, Uri and Bahadur Ali, and that it was time to isolate the country that has become a breeding ground for terrorists. 
She said, “Terrorists don’t have banks or factories of weapons. In that context, it is important to know who supports such terrorists? Afghanistan also raised this issue a few days back. Those who sow seeds of terrorism have to pay for it. There is no your or my terrorism – we cannot win the war against terrorism like that.” 
 
Swaraj hit out hard at Pakistan when she appealed to other nations to isolate Pakistan. “Isolate a nation that doesn’t want to be a part of the fight against terrorism. We have to isolate a country that sows, grows and sells terrorism. Such countries have to be held accountable. We have to take actions against a country that allows terrorists to hold public celebrations, without bringing them to justice. Such a country is equally responsible for terrorist activities,” Swaraj said. 
 
Kashmir is an integral part of India, she said, and will remain an integral part of India. “Pakistan should better stop dreaming about it.” 
 
Swaraj’s hard-hitting speech comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan over the decades-old Kashmir dispute that has triggered three of the four wars between the two countries. 
 The speech followed a sharp attack on Pakistan by Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> on Saturday when he urged the people of Pakistan to “question their leadership on why, when both countries gained freedom together, while India exports software, Pakistan exports terrorists.” 
 
“I want to say that India is a ready for a war… India is a ready for a war on poverty. Let both countries fight to see who would eradicate poverty first… I want to tell the youth of Pakistan, let’s have a war on ending unemployment… I want to call out to the children in Pakistan, let’s declare war on illiteracy. Let’s see who wins. Let’s declare war on infant mortality and maternal deaths,” Modi had said in his speech at a rally in Kozhikode.

Sushma Swaraj humiliates Pakistan at UNGA, says it can stop dreaming about Kashmir

Pakistan was accused of carrying out “war crimes” against Indians through its "long-standing policy" of sponsoring terrorism and was also called a “terrorist state” by India. This happened few hours after Pakistan <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Prime+Minister+Nawaz+Sharif+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif </a>racked up <keyword id="6354495" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="kashmir">Kashmir</keyword> issue at the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=UN+General+Assembly+session.&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">UN General Assembly session.</a>

"When practiced as an instrument of state policy it is a war crime. India sees in Pakistan "a terrorist state" which channelizes billions of dollars, much of it diverted from international aid, to training, financing and supporting terrorist groups as militant proxies against it neighbours," she added. 
 She made a reference to to JeM chief <keyword id="6459729" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Masood-Azhar">Masood Azhar</keyword> and Mumbai <keyword id="6355368" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="terror-attack">terror attack</keyword> mastermind Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi and said that people from terrorist organizations and their leaders, even those designated by UN, without any problem roam around freely in the streets of Pakistan and they operate with the State’s support. 
 
"With the approval of authorities, many terrorist organisations raise funds openly in flagrant violation of Pakistan's international obligations," she said. 
 
She also highlighted the irony that Pakistan talks about restrain, renunciation and peace while Pakistan's nuclear proliferation record is marked by "deception and deceit. She also said that the international community has made many false promises on terrorism and renunciation of lies and self-restrain on threats could be a good place for Pakistan to start. 
 India also condemned Sharif for glorifying <keyword id="50913" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hizbul-Mujahideen">Hizbul Mujahideen</keyword> terrorist <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Burhan+Wani%2C+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Burhan Wani, </a>who was killed on July 8 by the Indian forces 
"Even today we have heard support by the Prime Minister of Pakistan for a self-acknowledged commander of a known terrorist organization," Gambhir said. 
 
"Pakistan extends support to extremist groups, it suppresses minorities and women and denies basic human rights including through draconian laws," she added while talking about Pakistan terrorizing its own citizens. 
 Gambhir also made a clear statement that India will be doing anything to protect all of its citizens from all acts of terrorism in <keyword id="17605" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jammu-and-kashmir">Jammu and Kashmir</keyword>."We cannot and will not allow terrorism to prevail," she said. 
 
"The effect of its toxic curriculum are felt across the globe," Gambhir said, adding that it is ironical that a country which has established itself as the global epicenter of terrorism, is preaching human rights and talks about the ostensible support for self-determination. She also brought it to the notice of <keyword id="107187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="UN-General-Assembly">UN General Assembly</keyword> that shortly before Sharif gave its ironic statements about violation of human rights in the world body, its envoy in New Delhi was summoned in the context of the most recent of the terror attacks in <keyword id="71431" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uri">Uri</keyword> that claimed 18 Indian lives. 
 
"That terrorist attack is part of a trail of continuous flow of terrorists trained and armed by our neighbour and tasked to carry out terrorist attacks in my country," she said.

Pakistan is a terrorist state: Eenam Gambhir, also slams Nawaz Sharif

Mumbai attacks accused <keyword id="67323" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="David-Coleman-Headley">David Coleman Headley</keyword> made new revelations about the carnage. 
 
The Pakistani-American terrorist, Headley, said the ISI and LeT majorly funded terror operations in India. 
 
Headley said ISI and LeT financed him at regular intervals and Pakistan native Tahawwur Rana visited Mumbai before the terror strikes. 
Resuming his deposition before a court here today via video-link, the LeT operative also said that RBI has turned down a request to open a bank account for their office in India. 
 
"Tahawur Rana (Headley's associate and a Pakistani native who operated a Chicago-based immigration business) used to send me money from the US in September 2006 when I came to India to do intelligence work on instructions of LeT," he told the court. 
 
The 55-year-old, who recently turned approver in the case, also said that "it was my idea to open an office in India. It was a part of my cover (as an immigration consultant). I had discussed about this with Major Iqbal and Sajid Mir and they both agreed to it." 
 
"I also told Rana that Major Iqbal had asked me to do intelligence work in India. Iqbal told me that if Rana was reluctant to be associated with this (Headley's India operations) then he (Headley) should appeal to his (Rana's) sense of patriotism towards Pakistan," he testified. 
"But Rana was not reluctant and he agreed readily for me to go to India," Headley said. 
 
Earlier on Tuesday, Headley had told the court that terror outfits like LeT, Jaish-e-Mohammad and Hizbul Mujahideen were given moral, financial and military support by the Pakistani intelligence agency besides making fresh revelations including about an aborted plan to target Indian defence scientists and famous Siddhivinayak temple here. 
 He said he was working for ISI besides LeT (<keyword id="53557" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lashkar-e-Taiba">Lashkar-e-Taiba</keyword>) and that he knew about ISI official Brigadier Riyaz being the handler of LeT's top commander Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, who was the mastermind of the November 26, 2008 attacks in Mumbai. 
 He named three officials of the Pakistan army and ISI --Colonel Shah, Lt Colonel Hamza and Major Samir Ali - besides retired army officer <keyword id="141753" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Abdul-Rehman">Abdul Rehman</keyword> Pasha who was closely working with LeT and Al-Qaeda. 
 
Headley said his assessment was that ISI and LeT were coordinating with each other. 
 
Headley, who had visited Mumbai seven times to scout for targets, revealed that plans to harm the metropolis had started over a year before the attacks in 2008 and that LeT initially wanted to attack a conference of Indian defence scientists at Taj Mahal Hotel for which even a dummy of the hotel was prepared. 
 
But the plan to target scientists was dropped because of logistical reasons, like difficulty in smuggling in weapons and personnel and lack of details about the schedule of the meet, he said. 
 
The LeT operative had said he had also conducted a recce of the famous Siddhivinayak Temple and Naval air station.

However, for a lot of us, the real timeline is either unknown or has become hazy over a period of time. So, here is a complete timeline of what has happened-bare facts of how the state of Jammu&amp;Kasmir has unraveled over the last seven decades. 
 
 
 
1947 – The British rule ended in India and the nation was divided into mainly Hindu India and Muslim-majority state of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Pakistan&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Pakistan</a>. 
 1947 – The Pakistan tribal army starts attacking the <keyword id="3744025" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="kashmir-region">Kashmir region</keyword> and the Maharaja of Kashmir signs a treaty of accession with India. War breaks out between India and Pakistan over the region. 
 1948 – India raises <keyword id="64132" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kashmir-issue">Kashmir issue</keyword> in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=UN+Security+Council&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">UN Security Council</a>, which in Resolution 47 calls for a referendum on the status of the territory. It aslo calls on Pakistan to withdraw its troops and India to cut its military presence to a minimum. A ceasefire comes into force, but Pakistan refuses to evacuate its troops. Kashmir is for practical purposes partitioned. 
 1951 – Elections are held in the Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir back accession to India. India feels that this makes a referendum <keyword id="6355835" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="UN">un</keyword>necessary. The UN and Pakistan say a referendum needs to take into account the views of voters throughout the former princely state. 
 
 
 1953 - Pro-Indian authorities arrest and dismiss Prime Minister <keyword id="293003" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sheikh-Abdullah">Sheikh Abdullah</keyword>, leader of the governing <keyword id="43898" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Conference">National Conference</keyword>, as he takes a pro-referendum stance and delays formal accession to India. A new Jammu and Kashmir government ratifies accession to India. 
 
1957 - The constitution of Indian-administrated Jammu and Kashmir defines it as part of India. 
 
 
 1950s - China gradually occupies eastern Kashmir (<keyword id="71796" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aksai-Chin">Aksai Chin</keyword>). 
 1962 – a war starts between India and China and China defeats India in a short war for control of <keyword id="3978218" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="aksai-china">Aksai China</keyword>. 
 
1963 - Pakistan cedes the Trans-Karakoram Tract of Kashmir to China. 
 
 
 
1965 - A small war between Indian and Pakistan over Kashmir starts and ends in a ceasefire and a return to the previous positions. 
 
1971-72 - Another Indo-Pakistan war ends in defeat for Pakistan and leads to the 1972 Simla Agreement.This turns the Kashmir ceasefire line into the Line of Control, pledges both sides to settle their differences through negotiations, and calls for a final settlement of the Kashmir dispute. The Agreement forms the basis of Pakistani-Indian relations thereafter. 
 
 
 
1974 - The Opposition Plebiscite Front in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir drops demand for a referendum in return for extensive autonomy in an agreement with the Indian government. Sheikh Abdullah becomes chief minister, and his political dynasty continues to dominate the National Conference and state after his death in 1982. 
 
 
 1984 - <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> gains control over the Siachen Glacier, an area not demarcated by the Line of Control. Pakistan has been making frequent attempts to capture the area in the following decades. 
 1987 - Disputed state elections in Indian-administrated Jammu and Kashmir give a thrust to a pro-independence insurgency centred around the Jammu and <keyword id="307591" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kashmir-Liberation-Front">Kashmir Liberation Front</keyword> (<keyword id="94546" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="JKLF">JKLF</keyword>). India also accuses Pakistan of fomenting the insurgency by despatching fighters across the Line of Control, which Pakistan denies. 
 
 
 
1990 - The insurgency escalates after the Indian Army kills about 100 demonstrators at Gawakadal Bridge. Attacks and threats lead to the flight of almost all Hindus from the Kashmir Valley area of the state. India imposes Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Jammu and Kashmir. 
 
1990s - The insurgency keeps on continuing, with Kashmiri militants training in Pakistan and India deploying hundreds of thousands of troops in Jammu and Kashmir. It’s the civilians that have been facing violence by both sides. 
 
1999 - India and Pakistan go to war again after militants cross from Pakistani-administered Kashmir into the Indian-administered Kargil district. India repulses the attack, accuses Pakistan of being behind it, and breaks off relations. 
 2001-2004 - Moves to boost relations between the two countries are punctuated by continuing violence, notably an attack on the parliament of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir in <keyword id="41568" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Srinagar">Srinagar</keyword> in 2001. 
 
2010 - Major protests erupt in the Kashmir Valley of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir over the summer after a demonstrator is killed by the Indian army. The protests abate in September after the government announce measures to ease tension. 
 2011 August - Chief Minister <keyword id="19464" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Omar-Abdullah">Omar Abdullah</keyword> announces an amnesty for the 1,200 young men who threw stones at security forces during the anti-government protests in the Kashmir Valley in 2010. Indian <keyword id="64385" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="State-Human-Rights-Commission">State Human Rights Commission</keyword> confirms presence of more than 2,000 unidentified bodies in unmarked graves near the Line of Control. Activists say many may be people who disappeared after being arrested by security forces. 
 
 
 2013 February - <keyword id="3978220" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="kashmiri-jaish-e-mohammed">Kashmiri Jaish-e-Mohammed</keyword> member <keyword id="165584" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mohammad-Afzal-Guru">Mohammad Afzal Guru</keyword> hanged over role in 2001 Indian parliament terror attack, prompting protests in which two young men are killed. 
 
2013 September - Prime ministers of India and Pakistan meet and agree to try reduce the number of violent incidents at their disputed border in Kashmir. 
 
2014 August - India cancels talks with Pakistan after accusing it of interfering in India's internal affairs. The decision comes after Pakistan's High Commissioner in Delhi consulted Kashmiri separatist leaders in advance of the talks. 
 During a visit to the disputed border state of Jammu and Kashmir, India's Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> accuses Pakistan of waging a proxy war against India in Kashmir. 
 
2014 October - Pakistan and India exchange strongly-worded warnings, after a flare-up of violence across their common border leaves at least 18 people dead.

2015 September - Muslim separatist leaders in Indian-administered Kashmir close shops, businesses and government departments in protest at the enforcement of a colonial-era ban on eating beef. 
 
2015 November - One person dies in violent protests following a visit to Indian-administered Kashmir by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

2016 September - India and Pakistan exchange a war of words after 18 Indian soldiers are killed in a raid by gunmen on URI base in Indian-administered Kashmir. 
 
2016 September - India says it has carried out "surgical strikes" against suspected militants along the de-facto border with Pakistan in Kashmir but Pakistan rejects the claims. 
 
 
 
Today: the area is still living under a tension. The civilians are still scared that either the militants or the army will cause them harm. The curfew has led to the loss of lives and business. The main source of income- tourism has been at halt since August. While the nations are still fighting over the land, the leaders have forgotten the fact that there are still people living in that heaven on earth.
