The Supreme Court on June 10 ruled that a divorced Muslim woman is entitled to seek maintenance from her husband under Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), asserting that any discrimination against Muslim women in matters of alimony under the secular laws of the country would be regressive and against <keyword id="20809677" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gender-justice" source="keywords">gender justice</keyword> and equality. Earlier, the <keyword id="20066702" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NCW-chief" source="keywords">NCW chief</keyword> wholeheartedly welcomed the Supreme Court's landmark ruling, stating that the decision is a significant step towards ensuring <keyword id="20250318" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gender-equality" source="keywords">gender equality</keyword> and justice for all women, regardless of their religion. The NCW Chairperson emphasised that the decision reinforces the principle that no woman should be left without support and protection under the law. The NCW remains committed to advocating for women's rights and ensuring that justice prevails for every woman in India, she emphasised. Rekha Sharma also addressed the "lewd" comment incident that occurred earlier regarding a picture of the widow of Kirti Chakra recipient Captain Anshuman Singh. NCW chief Rekha Sharma said, "It was a very derogatory comment that we saw on social media, and we immediately took suo motu cognizance of it. The police have filed an FIR against this person. However, the individual is most likely from Pakistan." "Many such comments are being made, and we are taking those comments very seriously and urging the police to file FIRs in those cases as well," she added. Delhi Police acknowledged the National Commission for Women's (NCW) letter to the Delhi Commissioner of Police, demanding the arrest of the man and submission of a detailed report to the panel within three days. The police said a complaint was received from the National Commission for Women, alleging that a social media user had made an extremely lewd and derogatory comment on a picture of the widow of a late soldier. Taking cognizance of the complaint and after a preliminary examination of its contents, a case FIR under Sections 79, BNS-2023, and Section 67 of the IT Act 2000 has been registered at the Police Station Special Cell, and an investigation is underway. Captain Anshuman Singh, a doctor, was posted with the 26 Punjab as a medical officer in the Siachen Glacier area. On the night of July 19, 2023, there was a fire incident at an Indian Army ammunition dump at the camp where he was posted. Captain Singh saw a fibreglass hut engulfed in fire and immediately acted to rescue four to five individuals trapped inside. He went inside the medical investigation room, which was also on fire, to retrieve the critical medical aid box but could not make it out due to heavy fire amid strong winds. He was awarded the Kirti Chakra posthumously. Captain Singh's wife, Smriti, and his mother received the award from President Droupadi Murmu.

The country, however, doesn't exist.<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0aR2EagjXM" target="_blank" rel="noopener">At a January 12 ceremony,</a> Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and several city officials signed an agreement to become sister cities with the "United States of Kailasa."Two women representing Kailasa, garbed in what appears to be traditional clothing and jewelry, attended the ceremony. One of them gave an eight-minute speech before the city council, thanking Newark for the partnership and speaking of creating an "enlightened Hindu civilization."But Kailasa is the fabrication of Swami Nithyananda, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bengaluru/bengaluru-non-bailable-warrant-against-controversial-godman-nithyananda/articleshow/93665585.cms" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a Hindu guru who fled India in 2019 when he was charged with rape.</a>Nithyananda, a self-styled holy man who titles himself the "Supreme Pontiff of Hinduism," claims to have created Kailasa as a "revival" of a Hindu nation. The BBC reported that he also says he's purchased an island off the coast of Ecuador, though the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-64807659" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ecuadorian government told the outlet it has neither helped him nor given him asylum.</a>Newark's city council, realizing six days after the ceremony that the city was fooled, <a href="https://newark.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=2&amp;clip_id=542&amp;meta_id=441348" target="_blank" rel="noopener">voted on January 18 to rescind its partnership with the faux nation,</a> <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/newark-sister-city-scam-kailasa/">CBS first reported on March 8.</a>The city told CBS in a statement that the signing was a "regrettable incident," but that it "remains committed to partnering with people from diverse cultures in order to enrich each other with connectivity, support, and mutual respect."It added that no money was involved in the signing of the ceremony, per CBS.The Newark City Council did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.<h2>Kailasa appears at United Nations meetings</h2>Meanwhile, the same woman who spoke at the Newark signing appeared twice at United Nations meetings in Geneva in February, claiming to represent Kailasa. Calling herself Vijayapriya Nithyananda, she spoke at a discussion on how women are represented in decision-making systems on February 22, and at another meeting on sustainable development on February 24, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-64807659" target="_blank" rel="noopener">per the BBC.</a>A UN spokesperson told the BBC that her contributions made at the meetings weren't relevant or would be scrapped from consideration.A Twitter account for Kailasa has in the meantime posted multiple photos of its representatives meeting with UN diplomatic staff or ambassadors for various countries. A spokesperson for Lithuania's mission to the UN confirmed to Insider that one of its employees had met with the Kailasa representatives to "listen to their concerns." "Since this meeting did not take place with the official representative of Lithuania, it does not represent any national position of Lithuania towards Kailasa," they said.The UN missions for the rest of the above nations did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.Kailasa is signing agreements with cities like Newark and trying to be seen with international officials in a bid to legitimize itself through disinformation, Mohan Dutta, the dean's chair of communication at Massey University in New Zealand, told Insider."What they are doing is taking something that is entirely a falsity, that is non-existent, and materializing it through these performances," said Dutta, who's tracked Kailasa since it was founded in 2019. "It's really powerful and shows how disinformation works."Nithyananda, the organization's founder, has claimed that Kailasa is now issuing tourist visas, has a currency, and has established embassies around the world, though it has no internationally recognized territory, Dutta said.The guru also claims to be able to disprove Einstein's theory of relativity and possess paranormal abilities, Dutta said.Groups like Kailasa that center on a holy man who espouses pseudo-scientific claims are typically motivated either by the monetary gain from donations, or exploit followers through sexual and physical violence, Dutta added..And Newark's failure to spot any warning signs before partnering with Kailasa is particularly worrying, he said."It is flabbergasting that you have bureaucrats and politicians at the local government in a democratic state having failed to do their duty of due diligence," Dutta said.In a statement to Insider, a representative for Kailasa denied the rape accusations against Nithyananda. The representative also said the guru never claimed to own an island, and compared Nithyananda to the Dalai Lama.

Newark was tricked into becoming sister cities with a Hindu nation. The catch: the country doesn't exist.

<ul><li>The 5-judge constitutional bench headed by Chief Justice <keyword id="6355251" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="dipak-misra">Dipak Misra</keyword> ruled that women can now enter <keyword id="28504" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala">Kerala</keyword>’s <keyword id="6384180" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="sabarimala">Sabarimala</keyword> temple, irrespective of their age.</li><li>The verdict stated that the tradition violated the right of Hindu women to practice their religion.</li><li>The bench also said, the Kerala Hindu Places of Public Worship (Authorisation of Entry) Rules, 1965 put patriarchy in religion above the right to pray, which is stated in Article 25 of the Indian constitution. </li></ul>In another landmark verdict this week, the <keyword id="75952" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court-of-India">Supreme Court of India</keyword> ended the centuries-old tradition of women not being able to enter Kerala’s most well-known temple, the Sabarimala temple, if they were between the ages of 10 to 50. Petitioners had challenged the Kerala High Court’s decision that only the tantri or priest had the power to decide on traditions. The <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/sabarimala-verdict-live-updates-supreme-court-women-temples-kerala-5377598/?#liveblogstart">five-judge Constitutional bench</a> that included Chief Justice Dipak Misra, R F Nariman, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and <keyword id="854247" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indu-Malhotra">Indu Malhotra</keyword>, ruled that the tradition enforced patriarchy in religion and could not be allowed to trump women’s right to pray. Not a unanimous decision Justice Indu Malhotra was the only judge on the bend to vote against the petition. She stated that rational arguments cannot be applied to matters of religion and that religious practices are more complex than the right to equality. She added that Article 25 of the Indian constitution already protects the Sabarimala shrine and its deity. While Article 14 stresses the right of all individuals to be equal in the eye of the law, constitutional morality also accounts for everyone being allowed to practise their beliefs. Even if those beliefs are biased towards one gender. That being said, Justice Nariman expressed that the rule actually violates Article 25 by not extending the freedom of conscience and free profession, practice and propagation of religion to women. The management of the Sabarimala temple, the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) has already announced that they will be filing to review the petition. The president of TDB, A Padmakumar, stated that he would be enlisting the help of other religious heads to push this forward. The custodians of the temple, the Pandalam royal family, also expressed their disappointment in the verdict.

Supreme Court of India lifts ban, women of all ages can now enter Sabarimala temple

In a show of massive solidarity, at least five million women in <keyword id="28504" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala">Kerala</keyword>, <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> came together to form a 620- kilometer long human chain to protest the continued backlash and violence against women trying to enter the state’s <keyword id="6384180" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="sabarimala">Sabarimala</keyword> temple, a popular pilgrimage site that ritually bars women’s entry on religious grounds. The Women’s Wall was formed as a mark of protest against all those who weren’t allowing women to enter into Sabarimala temple—a <keyword id="6368818" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindu">Hindu</keyword> pilgrimage site. Supreme Court of India ruled earlier this year said that the doors of the temple will be open to women of all ages. The Yogi Adityanath government has decided to teach engineering courses at the <keyword id="50307" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Banaras-Hindu-University" source="Orion">Banaras Hindu University</keyword> (<keyword id="9367" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BHU" source="Orion">BHU</keyword>) in Hindi as well from the next academic session. BHU will now be the first institute in the country to offer engineering courses in Hindi. This landmark decision is designed to remove the barrier of language in pursuing technical studies as well as boosting national pride among the youth of Uttar Pradesh. According to the government spokesman, initially, the option of Hindi will be restricted to the first year B-Tech students, but in the coming years it will be introduced at higher stages as well. All the necessary preparations have been made in this regard. A list of experts who can teach engineering in Hindi has been prepared. There is a provision to call experts from outside also to teach engineering courses in Hindi as per requirement. Meanwhile, the BHU is engaged in arranging Hindi books for first year B-Tech courses. Prof Pramod Kumar Jain, Director of IIT BHU and Chairman of Official Language Committee, has confirmed the introduction of engineering courses in Hindi for first year students. He said that the decision to launch engineering courses in Hindi along with English has been taken under the new <keyword id="117020" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="education-policy" source="Orion">Education Policy</keyword>, which has a provision for making mother tongue, the medium of instruction. Prof Jain said that use of regional languages will only expand the scope of engineering with talented youths from a cross section of society coming forward to pursue technical studies. It is worth noting that under the new Education Policy, the central government had announced last year, its plan to introduce engineering courses in Hindi at the <keyword id="55119" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-institute-of-technology" source="Orion">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword> (IIT). Subsequently, the BHU started working on it, but had to shelve its plan due to the pandemic. However, with Covid on the decline, the state government is gearing up to implement it from the next academic session. No? You cannot, anymore. Because Tanishq has officially succumbed to the online trolls and removed the video from all their platforms. Then they disabled both. Finally, they have removed the video. Why? The kind of comments they are getting for the same video on Facebook would offer you a reason. Here’s a snapshot. There’s a lot more on Twitter that’s hundred times more vile and vicious, including naming and abusing specific employees of Tanishq. <div type="image" title="tanishq-ekatvam-FB-comments-1536x690" msid="78633618" hostid="261"></div> To be honest, I was very, very surprised that someone at Tanishq and their ad agency considered this script, passed it for production, and were bold enough to release it now. That this needs to be called ‘bold’, in itself, is an odd situation to be in. We had a time when a Milind Soman and Madhu Sapre wore nothing but a snake to sell shoes and we used to call that ‘bold’. Within days of its release, the ad has found virulent denouncement. And boycott calls too. So what exactly is the problem in the ad according to the detractors? It supposedly normalizes “Love Jihad”, a term that has been categorically stated in the Parliament as a non-existent concept by the ruling party’s own <a href="https://bit.ly/3nFWXwY" target="_blank">junior home minister G Kishan Reddy in February 2020</a> (much like there is no record, meaning, explanation or context for ‘tukde tukde gang’, a term used to defame anyone not fitting a particular narrative). <div type="image" title="no-love-jihad-parliament" msid="78633628" hostid="261"></div> Not all inter-faith marriages deserve to be called out derogatorily or sweepingly denounced or dismissed. Does the ad claim that this is representative of all of India? No. Does the ad showcase violence between people? No. Does it show that people live in harmony, beyond their religion? Yes. Is this kind of harmony impossible? No. Is this kind of harmony needed? Of course. So, what’s the problem then? The problem is supposed to be that since gullible Hindu women (who, under the ‘Love Jihad’ conspiracy theory, have no agency of their own and are mere puppets that can be led anywhere) are being lured by rabid men from Islam/other religions, according to the theory of “Love Jihad”, this ad shows the opposite – that a Hindu woman is living peacefully with her Muslim husband and family, who are arranging an extensive Hindu-style VaLai Kaappu ceremony (Godh Bharai/Indian-style baby shower) for her. Is the man shown in the ad violent and abusive? No. Is the family ill-treating their daughter-in-law? No. Is this scenario impossible? Hardly. I have at least 3 friends with the same set-up – Hindu wife-Muslim husband. They are living as normally as anyone else. They celebrate both festivals with equal fervor. So, can’t the ad showcase what-could-be? Of course, it can. That’s what advertising does anyway – showing the what-is-possible scenario. And this is not necessarily a make-believe world – it is what it is, at least when I look at my own friends. The what-could-be is usually based on insights on user behavior, with the usual advertising-led exaggeration layered in. Are there exceptions to what’s being shown? Absolutely, there could be. Do exceptions become the norm? Not at all. They are not, and shouldn’t. The other major gripe with the ad, as per angry comments is, “Why can’t they show the reverse? A Muslim wife and Hindu husband?”. Yeah, why not? But, <a href="https://bit.ly/closeup-2018">Closeup, the toothpaste brand, tried showing both, in 2 different ad films, in a 2018 campaign</a> (my post from 2018 has all the context, but the videos have been removed by Closeup). Both got trolled heavily and Closeup withdrew both! There’s no end to this trolling. <div type="image" title="closeup ad" msid="78633641" hostid="261"></div> <div type="image" title="closeup ad 1" msid="78633657" hostid="261"></div> So, I’m genuinely surprised that Tanishq and its agency actually passed this, knowing fully well the kind of reactions it may lead to. I’m fairly sure they do not live in a bubble to not know what kind of reactions to expect for this ad film. All they are showing is a happy, sane and peaceful coexistence of religions. But in a situation where there is a constant need to hold up a villain for people to be perpetually angry and fearful about, this ad becomes yet another easy target. Tanishq hasn’t done anything wrong, or haven’t shown anything to be ashamed of. Trigger Warning: Some may feel that the following content is disturbing. <ul><li>A UNICEF report reveals that around 14% of young people aged between 15-25 years or 1 out of 7 people often feel depressed or face some <keyword id="6354774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mental-Health" source="Orion">mental health</keyword> related issues in India.</li><li>The <keyword id="8902449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="COVID-19-pandemic" source="Orion">COVID-19 pandemic</keyword> has hit harder on young people and adolescents, as half of them reported that they or someone in their family had lost a job or taken a cut in pay.</li><li>Women who suffer from mental health issues are more likely to invite other diseases, especially problems related to fertility and menstruation.</li><li>Business Insider spoke to senior psychiatrist Dr. <keyword id="1808876" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jyoti-kapoor" source="Orion">Jyoti Kapoor</keyword> to gain some perspective on this issue.</li></ul> A 21-year old girl, who recently graduated from Delhi University, says she has been facing anxiety issues for the last four years. The girl, who wanted to remain anonymous because of privacy concerns, suffered from massive anxiety issues for the first time when she had to appear for her board exams in class 12. Now, she has graduated from her college and is still thinking about what career path to choose. She says, “Whenever someone asks me about my future plans, I start panicking because I’ve nothing to tell. I graduated during the pandemic and I’m still undecided about my career.” It is not only students or fresh graduates who go through periods of anxiety and depression. More and more women, especially from Generation Z — persons born in the mid-to-late 1990s — seem to be open about their mental health concerns. Radhika Gupta, a 23-year old woman from Delhi, who has her own business of handicraft products shares her mental health journey with Business Insider. “Whether you do a 9-5 job or you start your own company, the professional world comes handy with overthinking, stress, tension and whatnot. It’s like I’m already so used to this habit of overthinking and [being] tense all the time, that now I don’t feel like it's a problem anymore,” says Gupta. She highlights some major issues that she faces on an everyday basis because of her gender. “I have given my number on my Instagram page named ‘Handflys’ for customers who want to place an order for my products. And, on an everyday basis, I receive inappropriate messages and calls. I ignore this most of the time, but sometimes I’m so tense and can’t stop thinking about it.” Another 25-year old woman, a public relations specialist who recently got married, spoke to Business Insider on the condition of anonymity. She talks about how unmanageable her life has become after getting married. She has to manage her work as well as her home — cook meals and take care of her new in-laws. She says, “I wake up at 6 in the morning and I don’t know where all my time goes. I start my office work at 9 a.m., and before that I’m responsible for making breakfast for everybody. I even have to take several breaks in between my office hours as I have to cook lunch and dinner as well. Sometimes it becomes unmanageable for me to handle both the things, I often feel like quitting my job as I don’t have time for myself or do something that makes me feel happy.” According to a report, dated October 5, 2021, by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), around 14% of young people aged between 15-25 years or 1 out of 7 people often feel depressed or face some mental health-related issues in India. And also, children of this group in India have been more resistant in seeking support for these issues, as per the report. People who face these issues, also find themselves distracted or uninterested most of the time, the report says. The report also notes that as the COVID-19 pandemic heads into its third year, the impact on children and young people's mental health continues to weigh heavily. The reason behind this has a lot of key driving factors. As per the Indian Journal of Psychiatry, even before the pandemic, at least 50 million children in India were affected with mental health issues and 80-90% of them have not even sought professional support. Another report by Pew Research Center <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/why-gen-z-so-depressed-what-we-can-do-jennifer">highlighted </a>that the pandemic has hit harder on young people and adolescents, as half of them reported that they or someone in their family had lost a job or taken a cut in pay, and also most of them haven’t yet established their careers and they’ll likely have a harder time getting back on track. To have a better understanding and gain some perspective, Business Insider spoke to Dr. Jyoti Kapoor, senior psychiatrist and founder of Manasthali, an online platform, which provides mental health related services. Kapoor is of the opinion that young people are succumbing to <keyword id="24492" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mental-health-problems" source="Orion">mental health problems</keyword> far more today than compared to a few years back. “We see a lot of stimulation, a huge amount of information regarding anything is out there and this information exposes us to a lot of conflicts. A younger mind is not ready to handle those conflicts. So the stress levels are pretty high, especially expectations from ourselves,” says Kapoor. Further talking about stimulus, she also highlights that people of this age group (15-25) are almost starters or freshers who are just entering the professional world or are heading towards career-deciding exams. People of this age group have over the time become more competitive, or have a jealousy factor that shoots up the anxiety and stress level way more, according to Kapoor. “Younger people want to achieve success very fast. People now want to have their own startups, they want to have luxurious items and that can become quite stressful as people don’t want to give up so easily,” she adds. The people who belong to Gen Z are mostly night owls rather than early risers as compared to millennials, says Kapoor. A study cited by The Economic Times in 2018 <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/magazines/panache/sleepless-in-the-city-53-per-cent-indians-go-to-bed-late-thanks-to-facebook-instagram/articleshow/65559905.cms">revealed</a> that 53% of Gen Z population in India go to bed late or sleep late due to gadgets or social media scrolling. “Not only people using social media or watching Netflix, the globalisation of work culture has also eradicated the sleep culture. People more often come across work-related situations at night, which disrupts their sleeping patterns.” — Dr. Jyoti Kapoor, a senior psychiatrist Mental health not only disrupts your peace of mind, but it brings out a chain of side effects in your body. Women who suffer from mental health issues are more likely to invite other diseases, especially problems related to fertility and menstruation. “PCOS [Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome] and PCOD [Polycystic Ovarian Disease] are one [sic] of the major psychosomatic problems. As it is a problem of hormonal imbalance, it requires treatment of stress management. Mental health can also bring you infertility issues. Higher the person is stressed, the lower will be the chances to conceive,” Kapoor highlights. But in the afternoon, she decided to check her phone, instantly ruining the happy family get-together for her.That's when Amin saw that she'd received a flood of disturbing text messages from friends warning that her photo had been featured on the "Bulli Bai" app.Her heart sank. Amin said that knowing the political climate in India, she fears the humiliation she endured online could translate into "real-life" violence."If I'm dehumanized and my picture is out there, or my Twitter handle is out there, my details are probably out there," she said. "What guarantee do I have that someone will not see me on the road and actually come and attack me?"

Prominent Muslim women made to feel like 'cattle' as Islamophobic app 'auctions' them off

There were reports that the RSS, the ideological fountainhead of the ruling BJP, have been holding informal meetings with Netflix, Amazon and other digital platforms to monitor content critical of the government. Asked about the same, Arya, who is director - International Original Film, India, Netflix, dubbed the story "fake news". "It's not a true story. There was no meeting at all. It's a fake news," she told reporters on Sunday evening. Arya was speaking at the panel discussion "Artistic Freedom: Mapping Out The Entertainment Story" at the Jio MAMI 21st Mumbai Film Festival with Star. <keyword id="107737" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Entrepreneurship">Entrepreneurship</keyword> is not easy People often ask what inspired me to be an <keyword id="6359301" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Entrepreneur">entrepreneur</keyword>. Well, I am an entrepreneur’s daughter. I grew up watching my father run companies and I am sure that was a fundamental influence. But I also believe entrepreneurship is both <keyword id="49685" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Genetic">genetic</keyword> and environmental. My maternal great grandfather was also an entrepreneur; so I had genes from both sides. 
 But let’s come back to the hard facts and let me tell you, entrepreneurship is not easy. Of course, there are many instances of overnight speculative success where you build something for a little bit, and someone comes and scoops it up for a lot of money. However, building long-term, sustainable value is extremely difficult. I have enjoyed my <keyword id="6374782" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="journey">journey</keyword>, but I have also made sacrifices to become an entrepreneur. What I am doing today with <keyword id="2102002" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="1M">1M/1M</keyword> is extremely difficult, extremely complex. 
 
Get over the <keyword id="150208" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="fear-of-failure">fear of failure</keyword> In January 2009, in the midst of raging <keyword id="6371665" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="financial-crisis">financial crisis</keyword> and a deep <keyword id="44850" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Global-recession">global recession</keyword>, I hosted an <keyword id="2102006" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Online-entrepreneurship-forum">online entrepreneurship forum</keyword> for <keyword id="2102008" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Laid-off-engineers">laid-off engineers</keyword> who were considering a <keyword id="2102009" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Switch-to-entrepreneurship">switch to entrepreneurship</keyword>. There were 220 people registered for the event and 130 attended. About 145 questions were submitted, from which we synthesised some of the most commonly asked. Among those was one I want to close this volume with: How do you overcome the fear of failure? 
 When I was younger, I had an enormous fear of failure. I was quite used to winning and I was very bad at losing. Since then, while I have been successful in many ways, I have also failed at various attempts. My attempt at building a product company out of India in 1997 succeeded somewhat, but the company did not become a revolutionary brand of the order that I aspired for, nor did it achieve any significant scale. Somewhere along the way, though, I developed the <keyword id="23254" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="wisdom">wisdom</keyword> to take things in stride, embrace failure, learn from it and rise above it. 
 
Develop a personal philosophy: <keyword id="6389686" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Faith">Faith</keyword> &amp; <keyword id="88092" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="conviction">conviction</keyword> will get you going When I look back on my journey to trace the development of that wisdom, I see one overriding theme. Very early in life, I developed a personal philosophy. An unlikely juxtaposition of ideas culled from various systems of thought – from the <keyword id="62706" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Upanishads">Upanishads</keyword> and <keyword id="28423" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="vedanta">Vedanta</keyword>, from <keyword id="78326" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="hindu-scriptures">Hindu scriptures</keyword>, <keyword id="115232" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ayn-Rand">Ayn Rand</keyword>’s Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead, and certain <keyword id="2102012" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Buddhist-concepts">Buddhist concepts</keyword> of Futility &amp; <keyword id="910745" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="nothingness">Nothingness</keyword>. 
 
The Hindu system of thought has a very powerful core concept: Tat Tvam Asi or I Am He. Instead of worshipping an external God, the Hindus believe that God is inside. Indeed, a powerful way of thinking. If the ultimate perfection lies inside you, and all you need to do is realise your own potential, much of your fundamental self-doubt vanishes. At least at an existential level, the individual is complete within. 
 Ayn Rand offers a similarly individualistic perspective, although from a radically different point of view. Rand’s <keyword id="18935" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="heroes">heroes</keyword> and heroines move mountains. Although reared in a communist and collectivist Russian background, he celebrates individual achievements and believes in one man’s ability to make a difference. Many entrepreneurs I know have been influenced by Rand’s writings and have drawn inspiration, especially from the character of <keyword id="2102013" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Hank-Rearden">Hank Rearden</keyword> in Atlas Shrugged, who fights against all odds with tremendous <keyword id="740992" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="resilience">resilience</keyword>. Similar <keyword id="38769" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="self-confidence">self-confidence</keyword> echoes in The Fountainhead’s architect hero, <keyword id="199919" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Howard-Roark">Howard Roark</keyword>, whose resilience and <keyword id="2102014" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Personal-integrity">personal integrity</keyword> propel him towards a vision of architecture condemned by his contemporaries for its bold originality and threatening innovation. 
 
Yes, conviction and faith are incredibly important components of a sustainable personal philosophy, but where does it come from? How do you develop it? 
 
This is a question you must ask yourself. I can offer pointers on what to study, but how your own psyche will respond to the stimulus – I cannot tell. This is a spiritual, experiential journey, and you have to go it alone. 
 I will, however, share three more components from my own bag of wisdom: <keyword id="52698" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="laughter">Laughter</keyword>, <keyword id="54209" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="compassion">Compassion</keyword> and Nothingness. 
 
When the individualistic ideology overwhelms, when your head swells with self-aggrandisement, think of the Himalayas. Or the Pacific Ocean. Or the Universe. One can soon comprehend that we are nothing; we are insignificant; we are a single speck of dust in the continuum of time. So why be afraid of failure? 
 
Believe in the <keyword id="46426" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Turnaround">turnaround</keyword> I was once fired from one of my own companies. I raised the <keyword id="6357097" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="venture-capital">venture capital</keyword> and we brought on a middle-aged, supposedly experienced guy as <keyword id="5645" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="CEO">CEO</keyword>. I was in my twenties. The guy was incompetent and political. He didn’t understand the product, had no vision. We couldn’t figure any of these out until he joined, because he was on a charm offensive until then and I had limited experience of making a hire like this. We thought he could complement my product skills and vision with superior sales skills. 
 
Once he was on board, it started going downhill very quickly and he set out to fire me. I had massive immigration challenges, and had very little negotiating power because I didn’t have a Green Card then. 
 To cut a long story short, I was in <keyword id="76147" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="BUENOS-AIRES">Buenos Aires</keyword> when he called a Board Meeting on the phone and fired me. And the Board let him. I walked around on the streets of Buenos Aires trying to absorb the blow. 
 
Six months later, they had to fire the CEO. The angel investors offered to fund me again and start another company. I did. 
 
Life went on… Life always goes on. 
 Finally, if you are a woman and a wannapreneur, here’s one sound piece of advice. Be a damn compelling entrepreneur, not just a damn compelling <keyword id="210081" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="woman-entrepreneur">woman entrepreneur</keyword>.

B.Com (Hons) is one of the most common choices among the DU aspirants. The university received 106,549 applications this year for B.Com courses. The number of students scoring 95% and above in board examinations has increased by 38.4% this year, which is expected to impact the cut-off criteria of colleges.
