According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), 161 anti-Asian <keyword id="6463069" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hate-crimes" source="Orion">hate crimes</keyword> took place in 2019, which rose to 279 in 2020. The study titled ‘Wealth Ownership and Inequality in India: A socio-religious analysis’ was conducted for two years by the Savitribai Phule Pune University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi and Indian Institute of Dalit Studies, Delhi. While the upper caste Hindus form the richest community in India, the Hindu scheduled tribes in India account for the lowest share in terms of assets at 3.7%. This stark difference in assets on the basis of socio-religious grounds comes around the time when the Indian government has recently announced 10% reservation quotas for government jobs and higher education admissions, for the ‘economically weaker sections,’ a move that is expected to mostly benefit the privileged classes. Despite efforts to break down caste barriers, caste still plays an oversized role in determining an individual’s occupation, income and assets of an individual. “Ownership of assets, be it in the form of land or building, was found to be higher among Hindu High Castes (HHCs) than any other caste in India, Nitin Tagade, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) told Indian Express. The study also identified five wealthiest states -- Maharashtra, UP, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Haryana, which hold 50% of the countries wealth. The study covered 1,10,800 people — 56% which were covered from urban areas and the rest from rural areas— from 20 Indian states. "Part of the sadness is you want to be by yourself," she told Insider. "But for our cultures that might be being with somebody else, especially if we're talking about like our parents' generation or first-generation immigrants.""A lot of the diaspora are second or third generation, Srivastava added. "We're not our parents, so we might not share their values or their same adherence to religion.""And how to step that up in the pandemic has been extremely complicated," she added, "[The diaspora] never had to take on that role before, or that's not part of their values or their identities, but they're doing it for the rest of the family."<q class="pullquote-quotation">To have one of the few elements of your culture that you find useful in your life to be thrown away, it disconnects me from my culture even more.</q> Aman SehdevThis split in generational attitudes towards tradition has seen a less unified approach to grief amongst families in the pandemic, where not everyone values the traditions as greatly when mourning alone. When Nisha Thakkar lost her mother in the first wave of the pandemic, she and her husband Vijay were not concerned with fulfilling Hindu mourning traditions."Our [grief] was much about taking care of the older generation and looking after ourselves, and then having the time to grieve," Vijay Thakkar said. But it was Nisha Thakkar's elder sister that didn't share her feelings. Her mourning had been prolonged because she waited two weeks to tell her sisters the news, in fear that it may come as a shock to a family already struggling with COVID-19. "The biggest regret is actually not seeing her in her last moments," Vijay Thakkar told Insider. "Everything else which followed afterwards is immaterial, because not seeing her and not going to a funeral? That was the biggest thing."Nisha's sisters still want to fulfill the traditions in honor of their mother, like scattering her ashes in the River Ganges in India. But Vijay and Nisha, who don't agree with waiting for the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-on-uk-travel-red-list-covid-19-variant-cases-surge-2021-4">lifting of travel restrictions</a> to say their final goodbyes, are ready to move on. "Some people want to relive it because they obviously miss Mom, and we didn't want to do it," Vijay told Insider, "So that creates natural family frictions."We want to put it behind us," he added.<h2>"People have a bias against us"</h2>Outside of the diaspora's differences, some say the bigger impact has been how Western culture can sometimes undermine the South Asian experience of grief. <div type="image" title="river ganges" height="2247" width="2996" msid="82620321" hostid="261"></div>When Komal Chohan lost her Nani (maternal grandmother) in the mass shooting at a <a href="https://www.insider.com/shooting-at-indianapolis-fedex-facility-with-multiple-victims-reported-2021-4">FedEx facility in Indianapolis</a>, she wanted to look to the Indian community through her local Gurdwara - where her Nani was actively involved.Without those support systems, in an area where <a href="https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/IN">Asians only make up 2.6% of Indiana's population</a>, the separation from the community intensified for Komal how Western culture looked at her and her family's grief differently."When we lose someone [in Indiana], it hits the whole community, not just the immediate family," she told Insider, adding that the pandemic has seen "people have a bias against us." "I feel like in the pandemic, I've had more people say certain derogatory terms towards me," she added. "So have other people in the community.""I think I shifted from sadness to anger because of all that because we don't know if [her Nani's death] was bias-related," she noted about how it affected the way she grieved her Nani's loss.For others, this difference in grief comes across systemically. Apoorva Jadhav, based in Houston, said her workplace, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/experts-on-how-to-support-the-wellbeing-of-employees-of-color-2021-2">despite its support and benefits</a>, was limited in eligibility for bereavement leave. She could only take time off for the loss of an immediate family member, which undermined the relationship she had with her Uncle, a "second father" to her, who died over the pandemic. "In the cultures that we come from, the loss of somebody like an Uncle, or a cousin, who may have been so instrumental and impactful in your life [means] you won't distinguish between immediate family versus extended family," she said."It really was such a shock to the way we may identify who we grieve for, and who we can grieve for in the West," she added. For many, it's the support and validation of the community's grief that matters to the South Asian diaspora.Komal appreciated seeing so many ethnic minorities come together for the virtual vigils honoring the death of her Nani, and the other victims of the Indianapolis shooting."I think a lot of us feel alienated," she told Insider. "We feel like outsiders. So when it comes to the community needing us to show up we do.""That's what community is, showing up for your people," she added.<h2>"The dandelion is still there"</h2>Some told Insider that the biggest change for South Asians since the pandemic has been the fear and anxiety around infecting others and pushing communities away even further because of it. Dr. Srivastava predicts that this anxiety will persist post-pandemic. "There will probably be more importance on having scheduled visits, having structure around community," she said."The loss and the change still might be carried and still might have to be processed in a different way," she added, noting that with <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-36489893">mental health often being stigmatized in South Asian cultures</a>, "if they're not getting treated it's going to stick with them."<q class="pullquote-quotation">The dandelion is the individual that has died. Those kinds of moments are what I cherish."Seeking out those loving relationships in others has helped many South Asians both overcome loss over the pandemic, and disconnection from their cultures.Manmeet Chowdhry, who works as a leadership coach for others in similar situations, described her grief as like a "dandelion," where she could celebrate her mother's life through finding her traits in other family members, like her Aunt."The dandelion is the individual that has died," she said. The Durban resident Bachu was cremated on Saturday. His son Umesh told the weekly Sunday Tribune that his father passed away less than a week after he was admitted to hospital after an antibiotics course failed to address an influenza infection. "Unfortunately, on Friday evening I received a call from the hospital to say he had taken a turn for the worse. They said two family members could go to the hospital, but by the time I got to the hospital my dad had passed on," Umesh told the weekly. "He was not at the stage where he was on a ventilator. Reality of the virus hits you when it happens close to home. It was devastating for my mom, myself and my siblings that we could not see him one last time at the funeral," he said. Bachu had served in community and political organisations for over five decades. Last year, he joined others to register the Hindu Unity Movement (HUM) with the Independent Electoral Commission. He explained at the time that HUM was established because there had not been a voice in provincial, national or local governments catering to the needs of the Hindu community. "Existing Hindu religious and cultural organisations are working from outside government to address the issues facing the community, but we need someone on the inside to get these addresses addressed effectively," Bachu said. Bachu's lifelong friend Ram Maharaj, who is the national chairman of HUM and also the president of the South African Hindu Dharma Sabha, said Bachu had endeared himself to the community because of his positivity and diplomatic approach to everything he did. Maharaj said Bachu had led the fight since the 1980s to allow fireworks during Diwali when there were plans by government to ban its use at private homes. Johannesburg, Jun 10 () A Facebook video showing a young Indian-origin South African allegedly criticising Hinduism has been removed after the Hindu community members lodged an official complaint. In the video, Simeon Bradley Chetty, a self-proclaimed Christian evangelist, criticised the Hindu faith. He was seen addressing about a dozen people standing outside a block of flats in the sprawling Indian township of Chatsworth, south of Durban. "We are lodging a formal complaint against both Mr Chetty and the Church he represents, and have taken the necessary steps to remove the video from Facebook," the South African Hindu Maha Sabha (SAHMS) said in a statement. "The South African Hindu Maha Sabha notes the retraction and the unconditional apology that has been made and cautions others that Hindus will not tolerate this kind of behaviour from anyone," the statement added. His remarks triggered a flood of reactions on social media, including from members of other religious groups, condemning his attack on Hinduism. There have also been calls for police to charge Chetty for having contravened national lockdown regulations introduced as the country battles the COVID-19 pandemic. The regulations prohibited any public gatherings, including religious services, at the time the video was made. FH NSA

<ul><li>Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) also received a complaint against the <keyword id="10099376" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tanishq-advertisement">Tanishq advertisement</keyword>, stating that it promoted communal intermingling. </li><li>The industry body has, however, dismissed the consumer complaint. </li></ul>Tanishq launched a campaign ‘Ekatvam’, which showed the baby shower of a Hindu woman married to a Muslim man. The ad, if anything, celebrated inclusivity by showcasing an inter-faith marriage. The ad however, did not go down well with a lot of people. The ad was trolled by people who said it normalized ‘Love jihad’. The brand, to the disappointment of a lot of people, succumbed to this social media trolling and removed it from all its social media handles. The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) also received a complaint against the Tanishq advertisement, stating it to be objectionable since it promoted communal intermingling and the industry body has dismissed the complaints. The advertisement in question was viewed at ASCI by an independent multi stakeholder panel- The Consumer Complaints Council, which balances view points from industry, civil society, lawyers, consumer activists as well as domain experts. This panel was unanimous that nothing in the advertisement was indecent or vulgar or repulsive, which is likely in the light of generally prevailing standards of decency and propriety, to cause grave and widespread offence. The complaint was not upheld, as the advertisement did not violate the ASCI codes of honesty, truthfulness and decency in advertising. Therefore, ASCI has no objection to the airing of this advertisement, should the advertiser choose to do so. The India Chapter of the International Advertising Association (IAA) appealed to the concerned Governments to take a serious view of such intimidating behaviour. It said that any attempt to stifle with the fundamental right to express and receive commercial expression as guaranteed in Section 19 (1) (A) of the Constitution of India, should be condemned in the strongest of terms. IAA spokesperson said, "The IAA has always stood for freedom of commercial speech and expression, self-regulation and gender-parity. Our many meaningful initiatives in these areas stand testimony to that commitment. The marcom industry has always used its creative depth to create messages that promote amity, peace and harmony in every area of life and work. . The events which led to the recent Tanishq advertisement being pulled back are very unfortunate. While we respect the opinion of every individual on subjective matters, these should not descend to illegal threats and anti-social behaviour. We appeal to the concerned Governments to take a serious view of such intimidating behaviour and take exemplary action where required to ensure that businesses are provided a safe environment to communicate their brand advertising messages and contribute to economic resurgence of the country. Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI) also disapproved the targeting of the recent <keyword id="2851713" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tanishq-Ad">Tanishq ad</keyword> featuring an inter-faith couple. In a statement released to the press, The association said, " The threats against Tanishq as well as its employees, which led to the withdrawal of the advertisement, are a matter of great regret and concern. The advertisement in question, in fact, had been viewed at the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) by an independent panel- The Consumer Complaints Council, which is representative of multiple stakeholders from industry, civil society, lawyers and consumer activists. The panel found nothing in the advertisement that was indecent or objectionable or repulsive that could lead to grave and widespread offence. There is a consensus among all allied bodies and The International Advertising Association (IAA) India Chapter and The Advertising Club also support this." Tanishq had also issued an apology and pulled down its ad after its employees received several threats. “The idea behind the Ekatvam campaign is to celebrate the coming together of people from different walks of life, local communities and families during these challenging times and celebrate the beauty of oneness. This film has stimulated divergent and severe reactions, contrary to its very objective,” said Tanishq Spokesperson.

However, when I took the bold step to come out to my father, he intially didn't support me and all my relatives abandoned me. I was so passionate about my dreams that I left my home and pursued a modeling course," she added. Nitasha had to go under a rigorous Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) to convert her body to that of a female. "During my therapy, I was all alone. The worst part was that I didn't have my family with me. All my friends left me," she said. Before becoming a professional model, she also worked as a stylist and a makeup artist. As a result, she had to live without food and money for days. However, the society and law is coming close to inclusivity. In 2014, The Supreme Court of India passed a historical judgment of adding a third gender saying, "It is the right of every human being to choose their gender," India is a fantastic country, said Nitasha, who has traveled to Thailand and Australia to represent India with pride in Miss International Queen and Miss Trans Australia 2019. However, she believes a lot is to be done to make society more inclusive. "I believe the government should provide more security to the transgender community in India. We bear the maximum suffering from all sort of insecurity is it social discrimination or gender pay gap." Nitasha is still struggling for equality along with social and financial rights. "The pay is still not accurate. The industry didn't pay me much. The companies need to understand that we also need to earn a living." she said. The mention of transgender in the history of India can be dated back to the time before Jesus Christ. Some of the Hindu mythology also refers to them as a demigod. However, today, two million transgenders living in India are living in poverty. Just like Nitasha, most of them are hoping to get a recognition in society by the change in government policies. <ul><li>As per the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword>'s ruling, no third party will be allowed to interfere in marriages. </li><li>Khap panchayats are unelected (usually all-male) community councils in villages, primarily in the Jat-heavy states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. </li><li>The ruling was based on a petition filed in 2010 by Shakti Vahini, an NGO, to put an end to honour killings.</li></ul>In a welcome move, a Supreme court bench led by Dipak Misra, the Chief Justice of India, declared on March 27th that a <keyword id="122529" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Khap-panchayat">Khap panchayat</keyword> did not have any power to block a <keyword id="6355896" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Marriage">marriage</keyword> between two consenting adults and that any attempts to do so were “absolutely illegal”. The ruling will be backed by punitive measures and legislation. Khap panchayats are unelected (usually all-male) community councils in villages, primarily in the Jat-heavy states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. While Gram (village) panchayats are allowed to act as “self-governing bodies” under Article 40 of India’s Constitution and resolve disputes, panchayats based on “khap” or clan don’t have a constitutional basis. However, these quasi-judicial councils have been acting like the moral arbiters in villages long before the Constitution was drafted. Not only do they interfere in marriages between people from different castes and religions, but they have also been responsible for ordering honour killings. A prime example is the double murder in 2007 of the newly-wedded Manoj and Babli Banwala in Haryana’s Kaithal district. Manoj and Babli were said to belong to the same gotra, or <keyword id="6374122" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hindu-clan">Hindu clan</keyword>. This went against the khap panchayat’s governing concept of “bhaichara”, wherein people of the same clan are considered siblings. In 2010, Shakti Vahini, a human rights NGO, filed a petition with the Supreme Court seeking to prevent such extra-judicial killings and curb the authority of the councils that ordered them. The Supreme Court’s ruling today was based on this petition. Under the law, no third party will be allowed to interfere in marriages. The Supreme Court’s order preventing the khap panchayats’ interference in marriages is a step in the right direction. But it needs to be backed by further checks on the power of these councils. While their role as arbitrators of disputes such as those involving property or loans can’t be undermined, their dated traditions and patriarchal beliefs render them impediments to India’s social progress rather than its enablers. For example, in response to the court’s tough stance on the marriage issue in February, a number of khap leaders proposed an outright ban on the <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/meerut/dont-meddle-in-our-age-old-traditions-or-we-will-stop-giving-birth-to-girl-child-khap-leaders-on-sc-order/articleshow/62810872.cms">births of female children. </a>In 2015, a khap panchayat in Haryana’s Yamunagar district punished an alleged rapist with <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/mail-today/story/rapist-haryana-panchayat-5-shoe-slaps-246781-2015-02-14">only five slaps with a shoe. </a>In 2012, a khap panchayat leader in Haryana’s Jind district attributed the rising number of rape incidents to the <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Haryana-khap-blames-consumption-of-chowmein-for-rapes/articleshow/16829882.cms">consumption of chowmein.</a> The statement came a week after another khap leader suggested lowering the legal marriage age for women from 18 to 16 so as to prevent rapes. As this is India, curbing the powers of a regressive vote-bank is an ill-advised political move, especially when the parties in question are enforcers of Hindu traditions. Local politicians and policemen are complicit in supporting the decision-making powers of these bodies. However, in order to rule, a council needs people to rule over. As more Indians migrate to cities and become less conscious of caste, one hopes that the authority of these councils will eventually wane.
