Assam Chief Minister <keyword id="19952756" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Himanta-Biswa-Sarma" source="keywords">Himanta Biswa Sarma</keyword> has expressed his gratitude towards the Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary for the decision that he said has been taken to prioritise the productivity of the assembly. "By doing away with the 2-hour Jumma break, <keyword id="20697861" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Assam-Assembly" source="keywords">Assam Assembly</keyword> has prioritised productivity and shed another vestige of colonial baggage. This practice was introduced by Muslim League's Syed Saadulla in 1937. My gratitude to Speaker Biswajit Daimary and our legislators for this historical decision," Sarma said in a post on X. According to the previous rule, the sitting of the Assembly on Friday used to be adjourned at 11 am to facilitate Muslim members to go for <keyword id="22977239" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="namaaz" source="keywords">namaaz</keyword>, but, as per the new rule, the Assembly will conduct its proceedings without any adjournment for religious purposes. As per the amended rule, Assam assembly will commence its proceedings at 9:30am every day, including Fridays. The order stated that the amendment was done to scrap the <keyword id="22977237" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="colonial-practice" source="keywords">colonial practice</keyword> which aimed at dividing the society on a <keyword id="22977238" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="religious-basis" source="keywords">religious basis</keyword>. As per the order, the proposal was first presented to the Rules Committee headed by Biswajit Daimary, Speaker of the Assembly, which unanimously agreed to drop this rule. The official order reads, "Since the creation of the Assam Legislative Assembly, the sitting of the Assembly on Friday used to be adjourned at 11 am to facilitate Muslim members to go for namaaz. The Assembly used to resume its proceedings in the post-lunch session after the Muslim members had come back from the namaaz. On all other days, the House used to conduct its proceedings without any such adjournment for religious purposes." It further read, "Biswajit Daimary, Hon'ble Speaker took note of this matter and in view of the secular nature of the Constitution, proposed that the Assam Legislative Assembly must conduct its proceedings on Fridays like any other day without any adjournment to facilitate Muslim members to go for namaaz. "Accordingly, the proposal to do away with this rule in the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly was placed before the Rules Committee headed by the Hon'ble Speaker. The Rules Committee unanimously agreed to drop this rule. Accordingly, today, the House adopted a motion to amend this rule so as to provide for sitting of the House for conduct of its proceedings on Fridays like any other day. So, today history has been created by doing away with this colonial practice which was aimed at dividing the society on religious basis."

Assam's flood situation remained grim on Monday with a population of nearly 23 lakh affected in <keyword id="22326450" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="28-districts" source="keywords">28 districts</keyword> as the water level of most rivers continue to flow above the danger mark, according to an official bulletin. The death toll in this year's flood, landslide and storm was 78 with 66 succumbing in the deluge alone. Assam Chief Minister <keyword id="19952756" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Himanta-Biswa-Sarma" source="keywords">Himanta Biswa Sarma</keyword> said that all relief camps in flood-affected districts are well maintained and stocked with enough essential items till the situation normalises. He said that the safety and hygiene of flood relief camps was a priority of the government with ''my team reaching out to all people staying there to gather real-time feedback''. Currently, nearly <keyword id="22326449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="23-lakh-people" source="keywords">23 lakh people</keyword> in 3,446 villages of 28 districts were affected while 68,432.75 hectares of cropland have been inundated by the second wave of floods. Dhubri was the worst hit with 7,54,791 affected, followed by Cachar with 1,77,928 and Barpeta with 1,34,328 suffering in the swirling water. Altogether 53,689 people have taken shelter in 269 relief camps while 3,15,520 non-relief camp inmates have been provided with <keyword id="20062638" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="relief-materials" source="keywords">relief materials</keyword>. The Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger mark at Nimatighat, Tezpur and Dhubri. Other rivers that have breached the red mark are Burhi Dihing in Khowang, Dikhou in Sivasagar, Disang in Nanglamuraghat, Dhansiri in Numaligarh, Kopili in Dharamtul, Beki in Barpeta, Sankosh in Golakganj, Barak in BP Ghat and Kushiyara in Karimganj. Multiple agencies, including NDRF, SDRF and local administration, have been carrying out relief and rescue operations with 171 boats deployed in different parts. Altogether 70 people and 459 cattle were rescued in the last 24 hours by different agencies. Damage to roads, bridges, Anganwadi centres and fishery ponds, have been reported from across the state. So BJP’s detractors in rest of India got angry with the party for trying to discriminate against Muslims, the people of Assam got angry with the party for trying to accommodate Hindus. The issue is a lot more ethnic and a lot less religious in Assam. While the exit polls are giving the NDA the lead, Chief Minister Sarma fought the election aggressively. Sometimes, even at the expense of ignoring a pandemic that was taking lives. With his refusal to wear a mask made an abominable offence of setting the wrong example for millions of his supporters. Today’s result show whether the Congress⁠ — with its alliance of ten parties including All India United Democratic Front (AIDUF) and the Bodoland People's Front (BDF) ⁠— was able to convert these setbacks into votes and seats. However, it wasn't good enough to cross the halfway mark.. There was a third contender called United Regional Front, where parties like Lurinjyoti Gogoi's Assam Jatiya Parishad and Akhil Gogoi's Raijor Dal have come together, were looking to chip away votes from the two leading coalitions. But the BJP and Sarma have held their sway in the North Eastern state one more time.
