Samej (<keyword id="19905191" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Himachal-Pradesh" source="keywords">Himachal Pradesh</keyword>) [India], August 8 (ANI): A catastrophic <keyword id="22151495" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cloudburst" source="keywords">cloudburst</keyword> occurred near the Samej and Bagi bridges on Wednesday night washing away 45 people near Shrikhand in Himachal Pradesh. <keyword id="20501159" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rescue-operations" source="keywords">Rescue operations</keyword> in the disaster-affected area are underway. Baljinder Singh, 14th Battalion Commandant, National Disaster Response Force (<keyword id="19988414" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NDRF" source="keywords">NDRF</keyword>) said that the NDRF teams were sent well-prepared to Himachal Pradesh this year to ensure no delay in the rescue operations. Speaking to ANI, Singh said: "This year, the NDRF teams were sent to remote locations in Himachal Pradesh to ensure there is no delay in the rescue operations. The Samej cloudburst that has taken place is a huge disaster." Further, he added that 13 bodies were recovered by Thursday morning. "We have recovered 13 dead bodies as of now. Four dead bodies were recovered earlier. Ten more people were missing, and we have found nine bodies as of now. One person has still not been found. We will make sure the rescue operations are carried out properly," he said. Earlier, on August 7, the IMD reported significant rainfall across the state, with Joginder Nagar in Mandi district experiencing the highest at 110 MM in 24 hours Kuldeep Srivastava, head of IMD Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday, said that alerts were issued for various regions. "We have recorded the highest rainfall at Joginder Nagar in Mandi district at 110 mm during the past 24 hours. It is heavy rainfall, and in Sirmaur district, we have received heavy rainfall," Dr. Srivastava stated. "In other parts of the state, there has been moderate rainfall. Nearly 75 per cent of areas have received between 30 mm to 50 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours," Srivastava told ANI. The IMD has issued an orange alert for the lower Himalayan districts of Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Chamba, and Mandi.

We will conduct search operations over there as well. We are also building a bridge," said the Home Guard Commandant. "NDRF, CISF, Army, and Home Guard teams have reached. We are hoping that the maximum number of bodies will be recovered today. The three bodies that have been recovered have not been identified yet. That is why we are showing those bodies to people. We are also providing relief to people. 36 people are missing here," he added further. Himachal Pradesh minister Vikramaditya Singh said on Saturday that around 50 people are feared dead in the affected areas and the official number can only be declared after official confirmation and completion of rescue operations. Singh also said that the topmost priority of the state government is to retrieve the bodies and restore connectivity in the affected areas of the state as soon as possible.

Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap and Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Gandhi left for the site of the incident. Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap said that as soon as the information about the incident was received, the NDRF team, SDRF team, police, and rescue team left for the site of the incident. Another incident of a cloudburst has been reported in Thaltukhod, Padhar subdivision of Mandi. One body has been recovered and nine people have been missing. This has caused silting and due to this, the gates of the Pandoh Dam have been opened. Water and silt from the Pandhod dam will be released as well. The administration appealed to residents to not venture near the river.

Revenue officials have reached the spot to assess the situation, they said. Power supply has been disrupted in the area and some link roads are blocked. Following water overflow due to malfunction in a gate of the Malana Dam, the Kullu district administration had on Monday asked locals living on the banks of the Parvati river to stay vigilant. "We have alerted the people living in villages on the banks of the river that they would be evacuated in case of a breach in Malana Dam 2," Deputy Commissioner, Kullu, Ashutosh Garg told PTI. So far, the situation is not serious as only 30 cusec water is overflowing and the Malana Dam 1 below the stream can hold water for some time in case of a breach, allowing evacuation, he said. The local Meteorological Office had issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places in eight of the 12 districts of the state on July 26 and 27 and cautioned against landslides, flash floods, mudslides and increased runoff in rivers. According to the state emergency response centre, 164 people have died in rain-related incidents and road accidents and the state has suffered losses to the tune of Rs 5,269 crore since the onset of monsoon on June 24.

No respite for Himachal: Cloudburst damages houses, washes away bridges in Kullu

Two houses in Solan were washed away following the cloudburst on Sunday night. While six people were rescued, seven others were killed in Jadon village, a police official said. Those dead have been identified as Harnam (38), Kamal Kishore (35), Hemlata (34), Rahul (14), Neha (12), Golu (8) and Raksha (12), Superintendent of Police, Solan, Gaurav Singh said. In another rain-related incident, many people are feared trapped following two landslides at Shiv temple in the Summer Hill area and the Fagli area of Shimla city. Several houses were buried under the mud and slush brought down by the landslide in the Fagli area. Deputy Commissioner of Shimla Aditya Negi told PTI that 15 to 20 people were feared buried in the two landslides and rescue operations are going on in full swing. According to the state emergency operation centre, 752 roads were closed in the state because of the calamity. All schools and colleges in the state have been ordered to be shut on Monday.

Monsoon rain wreaks havoc in Himachal and Karnataka, orange alert in Gujarat

In a tragic scene which unfolded following a massive landslide by a cloudburst in India's northern Himachal Pradesh state on Sunday, two buses carrying at least 55 passengers were swept off the road into a gorge. Sources indicate as many as 50 people have lost their lives in the mishap. Atleast 47 dead bodies were recovered on Sunday before search operations were called off. A confirmatory search is underway since today morning, but reports suggest all the bodies have been recovered. The incident happened in the Mandi district, 431 km (268 miles) north of New Delhi on early Sunday morning. Officials said the landslide struck around 12.24am on the highway near <keyword id="4884794" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="kotrupi">Kotrupi</keyword>, where the two buses had halted for refreshments. Sources said a Katra-bound bus was first hit by a big boulder, then the landslide. The bus rolled down 200 metres into a gorge. Its mangled remains were later retrieved by rescue teams.
