<ul class="summary-list"><li>Tracy Young said she couldn't be a CEO and a mother without reproductive rights.</li><li>Deciding if and when to have children impacts women's ability to be in the workforce.</li></ul>It might be common sense to many women, but Tracy Young decided to say it out loud."As both a mother and CEO of two companies, I've experienced firsthand how crucial reproductive rights have been to my journey," she wrote in a post on LinkedIn last month.Young, who studied construction engineering, has cofounded and served as the CEO of two startups: Plan Grid, a construction software company, and TigerEye, an AI analyst for go-to-market teams."It's surprising to me that in 2024, these are the conversations we are having, and part of the reason why I wrote that essay is because there's so much debate," Young told Business Insider. "I can guarantee you that I would not have been able to see through this journey of being a founder and CEO had it not been for the reproductive rights I was given."Young's story highlights what's at risk for women who don't have access to reproductive care, and how the issue can impact not only women in the workplace but the economy at large.Things like birth control to abortion access have been "game changers" for women's ability to participate in the workforce, said Alina Salganicoff, the senior vice president and director of the Women's Health Policy Program at KFF, a health policy research organization."Being able to control whether and when you have a child makes a huge difference in your life, your personal life, as well as the professional options and the education that you can pursue," Salganicoff told BI.The issue is now front and center two weeks from a presidential election. Several states will have <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/states-putting-abortion-access-on-ballot-2024-8">abortion access on the ballot</a>.It's largely been a winning <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/democrats-arent-shying-away-from-abortion-talk-this-election-2024-6">issue for Democrats</a> since the Supreme Court <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supreme-court-abortion-decision-final-ruling-scotus-roe-v-wade-2022-6">overturned Roe v. Wade</a> in 2022, ending the federal legalization of abortion. Even states that typically lean conservative have seen <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/abortion-rights-ohio-virginia-kentucky-elections-gop-roe-v-wade-2023-11">votes in favor of legalizing abortion</a>.<h2 id="4f684b4f-9934-42e2-b8a3-86717fb3c43c">How reproductive care helped Young's career</h2>Young knew that she wanted to be a parent, but the timing wasn't right when she was in college, working on a construction site, or building a company, she said."Birth control helped me time pregnancy for when I was ready," Young said. "When I was building a startup for the first time and leading it as CEO for the first time, doing the biggest job I've ever done before, it was just not the right time for me."Young and her husband had their first child in 2018, after Young said she had "matured as a CEO and as a leader.""I just felt more competent," she said. "At that point, it felt right."Access to reproductive healthcare made the difference again for Young when she experienced a miscarriage at work during a subsequent pregnancy. Young said her doctors in California gave her misoprostol, one of two common drugs doctors use to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/midwife-language-procedures-miscarriage-or-termination-can-be-the-same-2022-6">manage abortions or miscarriages</a>. She also had a surgical procedure."There was no hesitation for the doctors to give me the treatment that they knew I needed," Young said. "Because of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, many states now have heavy restrictions on prescribing the drugs that were given to me as a treatment."More than half of US states now have restrictions on when during the gestational period an abortion can legally be performed, and 13 states have total abortion bans that impede access to care with few exceptions, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a reproductive health research and policy nonprofit organization.Abortion denial has downstream effects on women's economic potential, Salganicoff said, impacting everything from their education level to their ability to advance in their careers.For example, the ongoing "Turnaway Study" from the University of California, San Francisco, found that denying abortion care to women increases their likelihood of experiencing poverty, joblessness, and other economic hardships. Similarly, a recently published study from the Georgetown Center on Poverty and Inequality found that restrictions on abortion access "pose significant risks to the well-being and economic security of women," especially low-income women.The result harms women and the world at large, Young said."There's a lot of problems in the world. We probably want half of the population's brains helping solve these really hard problems," Young said. "I do."

Epic Games argued, and a jury ultimately agreed, that Google had violated antitrust policies in its Play Store for Android devices.In December, that same jury found that the tech giant held a monopoly in its Play Store and artificially limited the reach of competitors' apps, driving up prices for processing in-app purchases. Northern District of California Judge James Donato's ruling on Monday established remedies to that monopoly: For three years, Google will not be permitted to pay companies to launch apps exclusively on the Play Store or pay them to preinstall the company's app store on devices.According to Peter Cohan, an associate professor of management practice at Babson College, the ruling could "cost Google tens of billions of revenue over the next three years" due to lost in-app payments and revenue that will go to competing third-party app platforms."In recent years, the government has been trying to countervail the high pricing power of dominant tech companies," Cohan told Business Insider. "We will appeal and ask the courts to pause implementing the remedies to maintain a consistent and safe experience for users and developers as the legal process moves forward."Alden Abbott, former General Counsel for the FTC and senior research fellow with the Mercatus Center told Business Insider he is skeptical that the injunction issued against Google will benefit consumers, as antitrust law is supposed to."Preventing Google from bidding for exclusive initial rights to host top games will artificially undermine Google's competition with Apple," Abbott said. "It may also reduce third-party incentives to invest in creating the best games in the hope of winning exclusivity. On both those counts — reduced competition with Apple and reduced incentives to enhance quality — consumers are likely to suffer."When Epic Games' case against Apple was similarly appealed, the Supreme Court denied requests to hear it, leaving Apple with its partial victory.Representatives for Epic Games directed Business Insider to a public thread about the Google ruling, posted on X by the company's CEO, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/TimSweeneyEpic/status/1843394692551192972">Tim Sweeney</a>."The Google Play Store injunction lasts for 3 years," Sweeney wrote. Jambo bwana. Habari gani? Mzuri sana."While words like jambo — a Swahili greeting — were familiar, others were new to me.Later, TAASA's lodge manager, May Simon, translated the song and shared why the lodge staff greets all visitors with the popular melody.The beginning of the "Jambo Bwana" song translates to, "Hi, sir. How are you? Very fine. Visitors are welcome in our country. No worries."But Simon said its meaning extends far beyond words."It's about the love," Simon said. At the front of the tent is a living area with a desk and an L-shaped couch. Two steps lead to an elevated bedroom area with a king-sized mattress sandwiched by nightstands. Behind the bed is the tent's bathroom with a two-sink vanity, shower, and toilet. Business Insider received a media rate for the two-night stay.<div type="image" title="My guide and tracker in the morning light." height="1365" width="1820" msid="115309560" hostid="261" sizebytes="99674"></div><h2 id="817c3b7c-8376-480e-9671-d8130d884953">I spent two days spotting Tanzania's wildlife</h2>While it was tempting to spend mornings sipping coffee on my tent's veranda or afternoons lounging near the pool, the true highlight of TAASA is its game drives.The lodge sits near three ecosystems: the Serengeti National Park, the Maasai Mara National Reserve, and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.For two full days, Logolie Milya guided me on game drives alongside tracker Sam.This was my first lodge during my seven-night trip in the Serengeti, and I failed to realize how spoiled I was at TAASA.Since it sits in a game reserve, not a national park, we could off-road and see animals up close and personal in our open-sided vehicles. Beyond that, we were solo for the vast majority of the trip.Later, when I stayed at a lodge in central Serengeti, I learned how intimate my TAASA viewings were. In the more populated parts of the national park, my guide and I would join crowds of 12-plus vehicles for a cheetah spotting or sit in a line of Range Rovers waiting for a chance to see a leopard.The advantages of staying at TAASA continued as the sun set. In Serengeti National Park, night game drives aren't permitted. But since TAASA isn't in the park, you can track animals into the evening.Night game drives are an entirely different experience. Sam sat at the front of the vehicle with a large light, scanning the distance for eyes and animals. We spotted two lions on the move — a drastic change from the lazy, lounging lions we had watched earlier in the afternoon. But beyond that, Mikindo became a smiling face eager to hear about the giraffe I spotted crossing the Mara River and dive into stories about his family and childhood.I spent days with Milya and Sam, sharing anecdotes, laughing, and asking endless questions. Milya shared insight into how his childhood growing up in a Maasai village equipped him with the instincts and knowledge to be a guide. Sam told stories about his brothers and sisters who live in the nearby Ololosokwan village.Simon said her goal as the lodge manager is to "always try to make sure guests leave with a memory. Try to capture their hearts."As I left TAASA, I found myself stuck singing "Jambo Bwana" throughout the rest of my Tanzania trip. I whispered the words to myself on game drives and woke up to the lyrics in my mind some mornings.With those words came images of TAASA — the welcoming staff, the adrenaline-inducing game drives, and the serene landscapes.

After what felt like forever, Bridgerton Season 3 finally premiered on May 16, forcing us to drop everything we were doing to join Bridgerton No. 3 <keyword id="20841136" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Colin-and-Penelope" source="keywords">Colin and Penelope</keyword> on their tenuous journey from friends to lovers. However, there was a catch: that was only the first part of the season and we had to wait another month for the rest of the episodes in Part 2. It doesn’t take long for it to turn into a proper party and we get to see Colin and Pen’s first dance as husband and wife (EEP!!) Oh my god!” And that was it. Like, “Oh my god, what’s happening?” And then I screenshotted it and sent it to Johnny, who had the same reaction,” laughed Simone Ashley (who plays Kate Bridgerton). This is certainly a lovely addition to their already connubial-bliss-filled life. But while Cressida comes off as mean and bitchy in the books, Season 3 of the show has given the character a redemption arc. So the whole Cressida wanting to steal the thunder thing doesn’t fit well with how the show is progressing. We see her developing an unlikely bond with Eloise Bridgerton (Penelope’s former best friend). And through the first four episodes, we see Cressida’s personal growth and also get to learn a bit about why she is the way she is. She is desperate to get out of the situation she is in and does not want to marry someone just because her family is pressuring her into doing it. So when she hears about a reward attached to whoever outs Lady Whistledown, she jumps at the opportunity. “She hasn't quite realised what she got herself into until she’s face to face with the Queen, like, “Oh god, what have I done?” She wants the money, but the money isn’t enough to last forever, so now she has to prove herself,” said Jessica Madsen (the actor who plays Cressida). “I don’t think she thought it would be that difficult, which is what I love about her. She is incredibly spontaneous and explosive, and then all of a sudden going, “What have I done? Oh god, oh no!” Another noteworthy scene that we can look forward to and has been talked about a lot is the mirror one with Penelope and Colin. It’s in the book and if the creators have replicated what’s in it on the show, we’re going to be in for one steamy ride — not unlike the carriage scenes. So, what are you waiting for, dear reader? Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol is set to take over in September.Narasimhan joined the company as an outsider to the coffee world, and falling sales, union clashes, and activist investors have tainted his time heading the chain.On the other hand, Niccol is known for breathing new life into struggling brands. Chipotle's stock price tripled over the past five years that he led the company.But what do regular Starbucks employees think of the change?Five Starbucks employees in stores in London and Singapore, some of whom were around when Narasimhan took over from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-new-ceo-schultz-influence-executive-transition-2024-8">Howard Schultz</a>, spoke to Business Insider and said they want their new chief to change a number of things at the company.All employees spoke on the condition of anonymity. Their identities and employment have been verified by BI.<h2 id="bb315054-7882-4083-b15e-72a2bc28b602">Compensation and team culture</h2>A barista in a Singapore outlet said that one of the most important things she wants to see change is her compensation."I would love an increase in pay. Right now, the basic pay is S$9, or $6.84, an hour. I earn slightly more as I've been working for 1.5 years so far."A part-time shift manager in the same Starbucks outlet echoed her sentiments."Salary would be a good change, too," she said. "In general food and beverage salaries aren't that much, for the amount of work we do."Of the three workers BI spoke to in London, none mentioned compensation as an issue.Apart from that, the Singapore barista said team bonding needs to be strengthened.The barista said that one of the few things that changed when Narasimhan took over from founder and CEO Schultz was the company's mission statement.The mission statement Narasimhan established was: "With every cup, with every conversation, with every community — we nurture the limitless possibilities of human connection.""With our previous CEO, not much changed in Singapore," she said. "But I'm excited about the new CEO."Another Starbucks worker in London said she found the company well organized, particularly when it came time for menu changes.However, she hoped that with the new CEO, there would be "more outside-of-store training" available.The worker said that the training she received from her colleagues often differed depending on the worker, and she would like to see more standardization of methods and recipes.<h2 id="cee0f5cf-0709-47bb-9c40-f6674b2d1525">Bring US concepts to international stores</h2>Some baristas in Singapore also think their stores lag behind US stores in terms of updated equipment.A shift manager said that their espresso machine changed from manual to electronic just recently."In the US they have more advanced technology in the stores. Ours gets updated a lot later," she said about certain coffee machines and digital labeling systems. "It would be good for there to be a standardization of technology."The display board could also be digitalized to match those of other coffee chains, such as The Coffee Bean &amp; Tea Leaf. Starbucks, like many food companies, offers <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-uk-drinks-tea-coffee-frappuccino-menus-2022-5">different menus</a> in different countries to appeal to local tastes. One Singapore barista said their work can be more difficult when customers ask for drinks based on US TikTok videos. "Sometimes we don't have the ingredients required to make the items they want," she said.<h2 id="9a194d7b-0be5-430f-9dfc-bcb97b6b542c">Take customer feedback into consideration</h2>One barista in another London Starbucks branch said that some of the incentives for customers to return to Starbucks could be improved under the new leadership.He said introducing a drink subscription model like those at chains such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pret.co.uk/en-GB/club-pret">Pret a Manger</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://help.blankstreet.com/hc/en-us/articles/20842568768397-What-is-Blank-Street-Regulars">Blank Street Coffee</a> would be a good idea.By comparison, he said, Starbucks' rewards program is not as generous."Right now, you have to spend like £50, about $64, to get one free drink, which is a lot," he said.In the UK, the program requires you to collect 150 "stars" for a free item; you earn three stars every time you spend £1.Starbucks can also do more to consider customers' suggestions and feedback, a Starbucks barista in Singapore said."I would love for our special drinks on offer to become regular parts of the menu," she said.She and one of her colleagues on shift said that Starbucks should run a poll to gauge customers' preferences and update the menu accordingly. Representatives for Starbucks did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.

Sales at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nordstrom-rack-results-show-shoppers-are-in-for-deals-discounts-2024-8">Nordstrom Rack</a>, the department store's discount offshoot, were stronger than at the company's department stores — a sign that many weren't willing to pay full price for clothes but still had money to spend on looking good.Other stores, such as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dollar-general-shows-how-bad-economy-is-for-some-shoppers-2024-8">Dollar General</a>, are dealing with much more stressed lower-income shoppers. However, it points to a seemingly widening gap between middle- and lower-income Americans.One way to explain the big disparity between retailers catering to shoppers who are still spending (though more selectively) and those who rely on lower-income consumers goes back to the lingering effects of the pandemic.Starting in 2020, Americans from a variety of financial backgrounds saw their savings increase. This cushion came from rising wages and government stimulus payments to keep the economy humming through COVID.Since then, though, many consumers have spent that money, especially with inflation pushing the cost of everything from food to airline tickets up. At the start of 2024, most <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/economy-outlook-inflation-recession-cash-savings-consumer-spending-dry-powder-2024-1">Americans had an amount of savings similar to 2019</a>, right before the pandemic began.But how much they have left varies.Dollar General shoppers, who mostly come from households that make less than $35,000 a year, have long run out of those pandemic-era savings. CEO Todd Vasos said Thursday that many Dollar General shoppers are maxing out their credit cards and shifting their spending toward food and items that cost $1 each.Higher-income consumers like the ones perusing the shelves of Nordstrom Rack and T.J. Maxx, meanwhile, still have disposable income to burn, even if they're trying to be thrifty with it, Brian Yarbrough, a senior analyst at Edward Jones, told Business Insider in an interview."While some of that savings has been spent down, there's still a lot of savings out there," he said.Whether middle-class shoppers join their less affluent counterparts in trading down in the next several months will depend on a few factors. If the unemployment rate goes up, more shoppers could feel the need to trade down even more — something Dollar General CEO Vasos indicated could be a boon for his company.And even if employment remains stable, middle-income shoppers could feel more of a pinch unless prices start coming down and wage growth continues, Yarbrough added.
