Over 65 lakh students did not pass <keyword id="19951608" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="class-10" source="keywords">class 10</keyword> and 12 <keyword id="19954615" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="board-exams" source="keywords">board exams</keyword> across the country last year with the failure rate being higher in <keyword id="22866974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="state-boards" source="keywords">state boards</keyword> than the central board, according to Ministry of Education (<keyword id="20349630" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MoE" source="keywords">MoE</keyword>) officials. An analysis of class 10 and 12 results of 59 school boards, including 56 state boards and three national boards, revealed that more girls appeared in class 12 exam from government-managed schools but it is opposite in private schools and government-aided schools. "Around 33.5 lakh students of class 10 are not reaching next grade. While 5.5 lakh candidates did not appear, 28 lakh failed. This is one of the cause for low retention rate and Gross Enrolment Ration (GER) at higher secondary level," a senior MoE official said. Similarly, around 32.4 lakh class 12 students did not complete the grade. While 5.2 lakh did not appear, 27.2 lakh failed. In class 10, the student failure rate in central board stood at 6 per cent while that of state boards was much higher at 16 per cent. In class 12, the failure rate at central board is 12 per cent while that of state boards is 18 per cent. The ministry officials noted that the open school performance was poor in both the classes. The highest number of student failure in class 10 was in Madhya Pradesh board followed by Bihar and UP. While in class 12, the highest student failure was reported from Uttar Pradesh followed by Madhya Pradesh. "Overall performance of students in 2023 declined in comparison with previous year. This could be due to larger syllabus for examination," the official said. More girls appeared for class 10 and 12 board exams from government schools than boys. "This may reflect gender bias while spending on education by parents. However, girls dominates in pass performance across government, aided and private schools," the official said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>As a high school educator, I saw that parents of younger kids are more involved in school.</li><li>Knowing parents personally makes it easier for me to share more about their kids with them.</li></ul>When I was a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/librarian-shares-tips-to-encourage-kids-to-read-for-pleasure-2022-7">high school educator</a>, I got a surprising phone call from a parent one morning. They asked, "How can I volunteer and help the school?" I was speechless — I'd never heard someone ask to volunteer at the high school level before. It's more common for the parents of younger children to volunteer, but secondary educators appreciate help just as much. When I'm friendly with students' parents, it's easier for me to reach and support the kids.We educators work hard to make school a great experience for kids <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/former-teacher-used-dread-back-to-school-limited-budgets-unhelpful-2022-8">despite limited resources</a> and staffing, so volunteers make a difference — and not just the PTA members who generously donate hundreds of hours. Parents always love hearing positive news.I've also reached out to parent volunteers when I had concerns about their kids. Parents who generously volunteer often encourage their kids to do the same.Joni had served as library intern since 9th grade, and devoted many hours to helping peers at the circulation desk. "Joni talks about you all the time," said her mom. "I just had to meet you and see the library she was so excited about."The day Joni's mom planted the window garden, Joni barely spoke with her, but they exchanged smiles from across the room. A busy 11th grader, Joni continued her usual Friday afternoon routine of helping at the circulation desk and doing physics homework. I could see so much love and pride in Joni's mom's face when she glanced across the library and saw her daughter helping her peers in such a professional manner.Teens want to feel ownership of their school and social lives, so it's probably best that parents back off a bit. But when they do volunteer, they send the message that higher education isn't just a means to an end — but it's also a caring community built around lifelong learning. Some parents who usher at plays or poetry readings enjoy it so much, they say they want to go back to high school again."It's really cool of you to volunteer, Dad," one boy said to his father, a carpenter whom I called in to repair a bookcase, "Just don't make a habit of it, OK?"

In a circular dated January 8, the board's secretary, Geraldina L Mendes, has said all the exams for Classes 9 and 11 shall be finished by April 24, 2021, to enable schools to provide infrastructure and manpower for the conduct of the board exams, which are going to start from April 26. Schools for Classes 10 and 12 in Goa reopened in November last year, after being shut for nearly eight months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while classes for all other standards are currently being conducted online. "In view of the prevailing pandemic situation and availability of limited number of instructional and working days, the schools are hereby requested to conduct examination, that is theory and pratical for Classes ninth and eleventh for the academic year 2020-21 by calling students to the schools," the circular reads. The board has given liberty to the schools to conduct the exams as per their convenience. "Those schools which have already conducted the first mid-term and first term exams need not conduct it again," the circular reads. The schools are also given liberty to set the papers of the first and second terms will full weightage or with 50% weightage, and then convert it into full weightage. The circular has said schools can set their own papers as per the coverage of the portion. The state board has already announced that 30% of the syllabus would be reduced for the current academic year. Till Saturday, Goa reported a total of 51,790 cases of coronavirus and 746 deaths due to the infection, as per official figures. Examinations for classes 9&11 to be conducted by April 24, says Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education

The Odisha government, here on Wednesday, cancelled examinations for all Class XII pending subjects, conducted by <keyword id="9497564" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-council-of-higher-secondary-education">the Council of Higher Secondary Education</keyword> (CHSE), due to the spread of Covid-19 in the state. It also announced an alternative method of assessment, similar to the one announced by <keyword id="3372335" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Central-Board-of-Secondary-Education">the Central Board of Secondary Education</keyword> (CBSE). School and Mass Education Minister Samir Ranjan Dash said examinations for all the pending papers of all streams - arts, commerce, science and vocational education - had been cancelled. These examinations were scheduled between March 23 and March 28. As per the proposed assessment method, students who have appeared in more than three papers, their marks in the best three subjects will be considered for the pending paper. For students who have appeared in three papers, their highest marks in two subjects will be considered for the remaining papers. "If the students are not happy with their marks, they can appear for improvement in the examination after the Covid-19 crisis is over," said the Minister. The department would try to publish the results by July 31, he added.

Maharashtra to conduct class X, XII exams from April 23 and April 29

Speaking at a function organised to felicitate meritorious students at the Harmal Panchkroshi educational institute in North Goa district, Sawant said that there was anxiety among students about when and how the exams would be conducted. "A lot of students are wondering when higher secondary schools or colleges will resume classes. We are stressing on offline exams this year. Class XI, XII as well as <keyword id="2802459" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="college-exams">college exams</keyword> will be held offline," Sawant said. Currently, schools in Goa are only allowed to hold offline classes for Class X and Class XII students, while other students are taught online by educational institutions. Higher secondary and college exams to be held offline this year, says Goa CM

Schools could encourage or even require students to spend a year or more away from campus, or invest in satellite campuses, as my school, NYU, has done in Dubai and Shanghai.Finally, we cannot overlook that even for those participating in the "traditional" college experience of lecture halls and discussion sections, dorms and dining halls, there have long been inequalities and inefficiencies.Disruption is an opportunity to better serve the broader community. Women, people of color, gay, and transgender students have had to fight, and still have to fight, for an equal place on our campuses. Only a third of the US population has college degrees, and less than 10% have graduate degrees.</li><li>Tax private K–12 schools to supplement public K–12 <keyword id="6355445" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="education">education</keyword>. Higher education has become a caste system in substantial part because the rich now have a private educational system greasing the skids for entry to the best schools, and poor kids, except the truly exceptional among them, can't compete. We should be investing vastly more in our public primary and secondary schools.</li><li>Endowments over $1 billion should be taxed if the university doesn't grow freshman seats at 1.5 times the rate of population growth. Harvard, MIT, and Yale have combined endowments (approximately $85 billion) greater than the GDP of many Latin American nations. If an organization is growing cash at a faster rate than the value they are providing, they aren't a nonprofit, but a private enterprise. Senator Elizabeth Warren taught in the mother of all wine caves — Harvard.</li><li>A dean of a top-10 school needs to be a class traitor and reevaluate tenure so as to limit it to cases where it's truly needed to secure academic freedom, rather than the expensive and innovation-killing employment perk it has become. This would require greater comp in the short run to attract world-class academics, but productivity would skyrocket, as academics would find that the market, while a harsh arbiter, often brings out great things in people when they face competition.</li><li>We need firms (like Apple) to seize the greatest business opportunity in decades and open tuition-free universities that leverage their brand and their tech expertise to create certification programs (Apple in arts, Google in computer science, and Amazon in operations). The business model is to flip the model and charge firms to recruit (shifting costs from students to firms), bypassing the cartel that is university accreditation. Apple training, certification, testing, and reporting would lead to bidding wars among their graduates—the secret sauce for any university. I first wrote about this in 2017, and one of the silver linings of the pandemic has been Google announcing, in August 2020, that the company will offer courses awarding career certificates that it and other participating employers will consider equivalent to a four-year degree in that area.</li><li>Gap years should be the norm, not the exception. An increasingly ugly secret of campus life is that a mix of helicopter parenting and social media has rendered many 18-year-olds unfit for college. National service programs of all kinds, from military to education, provide exceptional returns on investment for both the nation and those who serve.</li><li>We fetishize a university degree, but for many it's prohibitively expensive and unnecessary. A two-year community college degree in business management, marketing, or similar field is a sufficient prerequisite for many office jobs. Computer programming, UX/UI, and product management are hot fields that will get hotter, and certification programs including General Assembly and Lambda School are a gangster way of preparing a person of any age for a career in those fields in a matter of months. Many front-end developers are also self-taught through Khan Academy, YouTube, and other free resources.</li><li>Expanding the variety and efficiency of certification programs can not only retrain workers in dying industries, but can position a young person for a rewarding entrepreneurial career. We need a nationwide vocational training system in the US, similar to programs in Germany, where four times more people per capita have vocational training than in the US. With a shifting economic and labor landscape, vocational programs could provide a changing workforce with options and purpose. Our declining life expectancy is mostly due to deaths of despair (drugs, alcohol, suicide). Only 32% of Americans go to college, and cost is not what keeps the most exceptional kids of any income level from getting to college. Improve K–12 education, strengthen two-year programs, expand the seats at the best universities, and college becomes an engine of upward mobility — without leaving behind the two thirds of people whom (better) high school serves well. Board exam schedule for classes 10, 12 announced in Madhya Pradesh

The secondary exams will continue till June 10, an official of the board said. "We have uploaded the details of the schedule for the 2021 Madhyamik (secondary) exams on our website. The examinations will be held with strict adherence to COVID protocols," he said. The exams for class 10 and 12 are usually held between February and March every year, but the 2021 tests have been deferred due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The state government had on Wednesday announced that the secondary and higher secondary (class 12) exams would be held one after another in June next year. Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal '<keyword id="913696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nishank">Nishank</keyword>' had earlier ruled out conducting board examinations for class 10 and 12 till February next year in view of the COVID- 19 situation. The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education has already announced the dates for the class 12 exams for 2021, but the authorities have been asked not to hold any test on June 30 on the occasion of 'Hul Diwas', state Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said on Saturday. Hul Diwas is observed annually on June 30 in memory of tribals - Sidho and Kanhu Murmu -who led the Santhal hul (rebellion) on June 30, 1855. Class 12 board exams for 2021 will start from June 15. Asked about the possibility of reopening of educational institutes, the minister said, "The COVID-19 situation in the state is under control now. We will take an appropriate decision at right time." <ul class="summary-list"><li>Bias and stereotypes lead to college-educated Black women facing greater challenges in the dating market.</li><li>Black women are among the highest educated female demographic in America.</li></ul>A viral <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@laurizzlem1/video/7177936385528171819?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7117710638563034667" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TikTok</a> of white, female college graduates showcasing their engagement rings while waiting to receive their degrees sparked a conversation online about the pressure on young women at southern colleges and universities to get engaged before graduation.The phenomenon has many names, but is perhaps most commonly trademarked as "ring by spring" or obtaining an "MRS degree." While the terms can have a negative connotation — implying that a young woman's main intention in attending college is to find a partner – it sheds light on the very real experience of young, white women finding their life partners on campus. It isn't comparable to the experience of college-educated Black women who are <a href="https://www.brookings.edu/research/single-black-female-ba-seeks-educated-husband-race-assortative-mating-and-inequality/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">53% less </a>likely to marry a well-educated man (with at least some post-secondary education) than their white counterparts."For Black women attending college, we're really striving to level the playing field or become economically stable. Our goal is to secure a career, and in turn, secure our families," said Anjerrika Bean, the assistant director of Howard University's Center for Women, Gender and Global Leadership. "Securing a spouse isn't the ultimate agenda for us. That doesn't mean we aren't interested in it, but it isn't the reason we are choosing to further our education at said institution."<h2>'The marriage squeeze'</h2>Whether dating to marry or focusing on dating at all is a priority for Black women in college, uncontrollable factors like systematic racism, preference, and stigma in a society influenced by western beauty standards play into the experience of singlehood amongst Black female college students.According to the book <a href="https://www.ucpress.edu/book/9780520293458/the-dating-divide" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"The Dating Divide: Race and Desire in the Era of Online Romance,"</a> young Black women, like most everyone else, want to marry someone who's similarly educated. But in a society where Black women are among the <a href="https://www.essence.com/news/new-study-black-women-most-educated/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">highest educated female demographic</a> in America (in terms of post-secondary education) and only <a href="https://www.abcactionnews.com/news/in-depth/in-depth-why-african-american-and-latino-male-college-graduation-rates-are-low" target="_blank" rel="noopener">36% of Black male students</a> complete a bachelor's degree within six years, the dating pool drastically decreases for college Black women seeking an equal on campus."We have an economic system that creates real inequality, in particular for Black men. And so you have a situation known as the marriage squeeze, where Black women tend to be more highly educated than Black men because of the different ways in which a racist society impacts men versus women," said Jennifer Lundquist, professor of Sociology and Senior Associate Dean of Research &amp; Faculty Development at the University of Massachusetts, and co-author of "The Dating Divide."Issues like a higher mortality rate among Black men — both for health reasons, but also systematic violence — including police brutality, affects the gender proportions in the Black community. In terms of challenges surrounding completion of secondary education, factors like being a first-generation college student, needing to work a full-time job while in school, or not having the savings or financial support to afford tuition slow down the rate at which Black men graduate.<h2>A hostile dating environment</h2>While Black women have the lowest rates of dating across race lines, predominantly white institutions don't necessarily create an inviting environment for those who are open to pursuing love outside their race. "These are Black women in an institution that is increasingly hostile towards people of color, particularly Black women," said Celeste Currington, an assistant professor of sociology at Boston University and co-author of "The Dating Divide.""Black women often don't feel comfortable or welcome in what is the pervasive romantic scene, which is the hookup scene — the parties, the drinking, fraternities. Those are often white men's territory on campus," Lundquist added.Long standing images and stereotypes assigned to Black femininity that devalues it as something that is deviant and undesirable also plays a role in why Black women are being approached less on campuses."These white supremacist initiatives throughout history paint Black women as aggressive or hypersexual on the one end, but also non-feminine on the other hand. A lot of people internalize these images and of course they're also pinned against white femininity," Currington said. "Blackness, particularly gendered blackness, was not framed as something that is beautiful, that can be desirable. And this impacts people's experiences." On dating apps, Black women with a college degree are more likely to be passed on by non-Black men than a white woman with less education. "A lot of my roommates were white and they were always quickly getting into a relationship, even as freshmen. Whereas I was on that same campus for four years and never found anyone," said Lauryn Craine, a recent graduate from Missouri Valley College. Craine, who dated intra- and interracially, said she had several experiences where she would casually date men who would tell her they weren't looking for something serious, only to see them in a relationship with a non-Black woman later. "They pretty much only wanted sex when it came to me," she said.<h2>'I was not used to being overlooked instead of being celebrated'</h2>Stereotypes of Black women as hypersexual and not worthy of commitment are still prevalent. Kierra Grayson, a 26-year-old consultant who attended Cornell University for undergraduate school, detailed a similar experience. "I talked to a couple of guys, but it never got to be anything serious because I just don't think I quite frankly fit into the category of women that they were looking for," she said.While Grayson didn't date outside her race during her time in undergrad, she felt the landscape of a predominantly white institution (PWI) put Black women in competition with non-Black women and Black women from wealthy backgrounds to find a partner. "I had a very isolating and discomforting experience because I don't think PWIs are ready to accept the multiple ways that Black people can appear. They are prepared to accept elite Blacks who know how to do these elite things and are accepted in these elite circles versus people who have to learn how to do that," said Grayson. Grayson said she had never felt discriminated against by her own community until she went to a PWI. "I was not used to being overlooked instead of being celebrated. There was a huge point in my freshman year where I became very insecure and just felt like, maybe I wasn't attractive or maybe I was doing something wrong because suddenly guys weren't into me," she said.Tension from other community members also plays a part. "Black women often face a double standard when they date outside their race because sexuality and intimate decisions are more policed among other Black community members, Black men for example. Whereas Black men might not face the same type of gendered policing that Black women do," Currington said, noting that Black men are more likely to interracially date on campus. But just because college-educated Black women aren't reporting being married at large rates doesn't mean they aren't experiencing intimate relationships. "Maybe marriage is not the goal for some, but it doesn't necessarily mean they don't have relationships," said Currington. Lindquist adds: "Marriage has increasingly become an institution that is tied to social class, like expensive proposals, rings, and weddings — all very white behaviors. So I think it's important often to spread the category to be about cohabitating partners as well. There's still differences, but they do look a lot more similar, across race and education when we factor in other forms of relationships."

Why aren't college-educated Black women meeting their match?

<ul><li>The top court asked CBSE and UGC to work in tandem to ensure that the careers of two lakh students giving the <keyword id="1157191" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="compartment-exams">compartment exams</keyword>, from September 22 to 29, are not jeopardized. </li><li>During the hearing, the top court earlier asked the University Grants Commission (UGC) not to declare the academic calendar till September 24 but was later told that the calendar has been released. </li><li>Taking a serious view of the release of academic calendar, the top court sought explanation from the UGC, to be given on Thursday, and directed that it be placed on record. </li></ul> The Supreme Court Tuesday suggested that the CBSE declare the results of compartment examination expeditiously and asked the UGC to ensure that students get admission in colleges saying "these are exceptional times". The top court asked CBSE and UGC to work in tandem to ensure that the careers of two lakh students giving the compartment exams, from September 22 to 29, are not jeopardized. During the hearing, the top court earlier asked the University Grants Commission (UGC) not to declare the academic calendar till September 24 but was later told that the calendar has been released. Taking a serious view of the release of academic calendar, the top court sought explanation from the UGC, to be given on Thursday, and directed that it be placed on record. "At what time and which date it was released, you will have to show this," the bench comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and Sanjiv Khanna said. "Don't give us vague dates. Give us the date and time when it was released. Whether it was after the order, before the order or when the matter was being heard. We will examine that," it added. The bench posted the matter on September 24 and asked both CBSE and UGC to coordinate to accommodate around two lakh students giving the compartment examinations. At the outset, <keyword id="9913577" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="senior-advocate-vivek-tankha">senior advocate Vivek Tankha</keyword>, appearing for one of the petitioners, said that CBSE compartment exams have commenced today and will continue up to September 29 and nearly two lakh students will appear in the compartment exams. Tankha said that UGC is also here and the CBSE should come out with the results at the earliest. "The UGC has to give us (students appearing in compartment exams) a chance to take admissions in universities," he said. Tankha argued that CBSE has to declare results early and UGC has to give us a chance of taking admission in colleges otherwise our one year will be lost. The bench asked Tankha that without CBSE declaring the results how can UGC accommodate the students. The senior lawyer contended that after the results are declared, UGC can give the students a chance to take admissions in colleges as the students are appearing in the exams during the <keyword id="43587" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="pandemic">pandemic</keyword> times. The bench asked UGC that because of peculiar situation is it possible for the commission to have some route open for accommodating these students who are appearing in compartment exams. To this, the counsel for UGC said that it can be done, if the seats are vacant but he will have to take instructions. The bench then told the counsel to take instructions and see whether these issues can be taken care of by the commission while asking when UGC intends to keep its cut-off date for admission. The counsel replied that he has to take instruction but it may be October end. Counsel for CBSE argued that there are 1,248 exam centres and answer sheets have to be brought to the regional centres. The top court said that these are not normal times but exceptional times and CBSE has to take steps as the career of two lakh students is too big. The counsel for CBSE replied that it will take 3-4 weeks (for declaration of results of compartment exam). The top court told the CBSE that it has to come out with some date so that UGC can take further steps and observed, "If you (CBSE) will not have the date, then UGC will have difficulty". When counsel for UGC said that it may have cut off date of October end, the bench said, "It could be the first week of November also". He said that UGC has already finalised the academic calendar and was about to release it. The bench asked UGC to not release it till Thursday and would hear the matter on that day to know about the views of CBSE. "Both of you coordinate and have a cut off date so that the other one can comply with it. This is only to accommodate these two lakh students. Two lakh is not a small number. Now the situation is beyond anyone's comprehension," the bench said. The bench observed that CBSE has to work in tandem with the UGC and it should be left to them on how to work it out. When one of the counsels told the bench that they have given a chart of dates given by colleges, the bench said, "We are not going to give directions to individual colleges". After the matter was over, the UGC's counsel mentioned the matter and told the bench that the academic calendar has already been released and the admission process has to be completed by October 31. "We will have it on Thursday. You explain this on that day," the bench said, adding, "You also place it on record." The counsel for UGC said, "I am sorry, I was misinformed about it". The bench said, "That's okay but it has to be explained how this miscommunication happened". On September 10, the top court said that the CBSE would not be able to help much the students taking compartment exams for class XII this month as it would be the colleges and universities which will take their admissions for higher studies. The apex court said this while hearing a plea which has challenged the decision of <keyword id="3372335" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Central-Board-of-Secondary-Education">the Central Board of Secondary Education</keyword> (CBSE) to hold compartment exams on the ground that it would be detrimental to the health of the examinees.
