On August 13, Zydus Cadila launched its own version of Remdesivir called Remda in the Indian market. Remdac is priced at ₹2,800 per 100 mg vial, making it the cheapest version of the drug so far. Zydus Cadila said that the drug will be made available across India through the group's strong distribution chain reaching out to government and private hospitals treating COVID-19 patients. In June this year, Zydus had entered into a non-exclusive agreement with Gilead Sciences Inc to manufacture and sell Remdesivir, the investigational drug, which has been issued an emergency use authorisation by the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) to treat patients suffering from severe symptoms of COVID-19. Previously, pharmaceutical giants Cipla and Hetero introduced generic versions Remdesivir — an antiviral drug first used to treat Ebola — to fight coronavirus. The drug was launched in India in July. India’s Health Ministry approved use of the drug to treat mild cases of coronavirus. However, the drug is not recommended to treat those who have several renal impairment, pregnant and lactating women, children below 12 years age. They will be made available in two equal lots of 10,000 each. One lot will be immediately supplied to Hyderabad, Delhi, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra while the other lot will be supplied to Kolkata, Indore, Bhopal, Lucknow, Patna, Bhubaneshwar, Ranchi, Vijayawada, Cochin, Thiruvananthapuram and Goa within a week to meet the emergency requirements, the company said. "Through Covifor, we hope to reduce the treatment time of a patient in a hospital, thereby reducing the increasing pressure on the <keyword id="91332" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Medical-Infrastructure">medical infrastructure</keyword>, overburdened currently due to accelerating Covid-19 infection rates. We are working closely with the government and medical community to make Covifor quickly accessible to both public and private healthcare settings across the country," said M. Covifor is the first generic brand of Remdesivir which is indicated for the treatment of Covid-19 patients in adults and children, hospitalised with severe symptoms of the disease. Drug maker Cipla Limited on Sunday announced the launch of experimental anti-viral drug remdesivir under its <keyword id="9441113" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="brand-name-cipremi">brand name Cipremi</keyword>. Remdesivir is the only US FDA approved Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA) treatment for adult and paediatric patients hospitalized with suspected or laboratory confirmed COVID-19 infection. In May, US drug maker Gilead Sciences extended a voluntary non-exclusive license to Cipla to manufacture and market Cipla's generic version of remedisvir called Cipremi. The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has granted Cipla regulatory approval for restricted emergency use in the country as part of the accelerated approval process considering the urgent and unmet medical need, the company said in a statement. As part of a risk management plan, Cipla will provide training on use of the drug, inform patient consent documents, conduct post marketing surveillance as well as conduct a Phase IV <keyword id="122283" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Clinical-trial">clinical trial</keyword> on Indian patients. "Cipla appreciates the strong partnership with Gilead to bring remdesivir to patients in India. We have been deeply invested in exploring all possible avenues to save millions of lives impacted by Covid-19 pandemic, and this launch is a significant milestone in that direction," said Umang Vohra MD and Global CEO, Cipla. According to a preliminary report from the ACTT-1 (Adaptive COVID-19 Treatment Trial 1) study, a randomized clinical trial conducted with remdesivir on 1,063 patients over 60 centres across US, Europe and Asia demonstrated a faster time to clinical recovery in hospitalised patients as compared to placebo. Most of these patients were on oxygen therapy of which some were receiving high flow oxygen or non-invasive ventilation, and some were on a mechanical ventilator. The mortality rates in the study were 7.1 per cent in those given remdesivir and 11.9 per cent in those who were given placebo. In May, Gilead Sciences signed non-exclusive voluntary licensing agreements with six Indian pharmaceutical companies to boost the supply of remdesivir, the experimental antiviral drug that has shown promise in Covid-19 treatment. These companies were -- Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd., <keyword id="9441116" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="zydus-cadila-healthcare-ltd-">Zydus Cadila Healthcare Ltd.</keyword>, Biocon company Syngene, Hetero Labs Ltd.; Jubilant Lifesciences; and Cipla Ltd. Media reports said that Hetero Labs Ltd has also received regulatory approval from DCGI but the drug maker was yet to make it official. Cipla to sell anti-viral drug remdesivir as Cipremi in India

In 2017, the FDA issued a warning to Hetero, claiming that the factory did not inspect batch discrepancies, and failed to wash and sanitize their equipment.According to <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/health/2019/01/14/fda-zhejiang-huahai-hetero-labs-blood-pressure-drug-recall-cancer/2547858002/">USA Today</a>, since 2015, the FDA has inspected more foreign factories than domestic ones, but a 2017 Government Accountability Office <a href="https://www.gao.gov/products/GAO-17-143">report</a> found that in mid-2016, nearly 1,000 foreign factories that produce US drugs had gone uninspected. Gildead disagrees with WHO study Remdesivir was originally developed by Gilead Sciences to treat the Ebola virus and Hepatitis C. The company has so far <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/15/health/coronavirus-remdesivir-who.html">refuted</a> all the claims made by the WHO study. The WHO study is likely to be a setback for all the pharmaceutical companies producing Remdesivir. The increasing number of cases in India drove the demand for Remdesivir. According to industry experts, Remdesivir was bringing in at least ₹6.5 million to ₹13 million in revenues per day at the current caseload. “Assuming 5% to 10% market share, we estimate current demand at 1,200 to 2,400 vials per day, which translates to ₹6.5 million to ₹ 13 million in revenues per day at the current caseload. We factor in ₹1.2 billion and ₹0.9 billion in sales from Remdesivir in FY21F and FY22F respectively,” a Nomura report dated October 2020 said. WHO isn’t alone in its skepticism of Gilead’s Remdesivir Remdesivir emerged as one of the most preferred treatments for COVID-19 — this new found disease that was threatening the world — largely driven by Gilead’s narrative. Even before WHO’s study, a Lancet report <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/science/health/news/remdesivir-the-coronavirus-miracle-drug-may-be-overhyped-suggests-lancet-study/articleshow/75470476.cms">contradicted</a> the pharmaceutical giant’s claims indicating that Remedesivir may not be the most ‘promising’ treatment for coronavirus. It warned that Remdesivir provided no clinical benefits to patients who have tested for coronavirus. Despite the warnings, Gilead Sciences continue to claim Remdesivir as a plausible treatment for COVID-19. In July, Gilead released further data suggesting that it <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/978b4f8a-62b5-43a0-ad32-dda1930ec47c">may improve chances of survival. </a>However, these findings have not been confirmed by a randomised controlled trial until now. “What all of us would like to see is what is frequently called a ‘magic bullet’; a drug that’s already in existence, that is safe and works effectively in patients. The company has priced ‘Avigan’ at ₹99 — a premium price when compared to other versions of the same drug. The whole course of the tablet is expected to cost over ₹12,000. In August, two more Indian pharma companies — Sun Pharmaceuticals and Zendara Pharma — said they are manufacturing Favipiravir in the country to treat coronavirus. Glenmark was the first to launch the drug in India followed by Cipla. Sun Pharmaceuticals on <a href="https://www.livemint.com/science/news/at-rs-35-per-tablet-sun-pharma-launches-fluguard-for-covid-treatment-11596532805116.html">August 4 announced </a>the launch of Favipiravir, under brand name FluGuard, at ₹35 per tablet for the treatment of mild to moderate cases of Covid-19 in India. The stocks of FluGuard will be available in the market from this week. "We are launching FluGuard at an economical price to make the drug accessible to more and more patients, thereby reducing their financial burden. This is in line with our continuous efforts to support India's pandemic response," Sun Pharma said. Hyderabad-based Zenara Pharma on August 5 <a href="https://theprint.in/health/zenara-pharma-latest-indian-firm-to-get-nod-for-covid-drug-favipiravir-to-call-it-favizen/475666/">announced that it has received approval</a> from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) to manufacture and sell Favipiravir tablets as a treatment option for patients with mild to moderate symptoms of Covid-19. The tablet, which will be sold under the brand name 'Favizen', is being manufactured at Zenara's US FDA approved state-of-the-art facility in Hyderabad. Zara Pharma, a fully-owned subsidiary of Biophore India Pharmaceuticals, is in talks with multiple state institutions and several hospitals in India to ensure that Favizen is readily available for the patients in need. Favipiravir has demonstrated positive clinical outcomes in some trials and has already been approved for use to treat Covid-19 in Russia and parts of the Middle East. Advance stage trials are currently underway in several countries, including India. The + represents the numerous other groups of sexual and gender minorities that would otherwise make the acronym too long to use.)In her role as vice president and managing director of intellectual property licensing at IBM, she has helped shape LGBT+ diversity within business, with clever HR software and mentorship programs. IBM also sponsors over 40 diversity network groups across 30 countries and has even influenced its partners to adopt more diverse working programs and create more LGBT+-friendly products and services.Outside of IBM, Brind-Woody is also a board member of Out &amp; Equal - a group which campaigns for workplace equality.Brind-Woody has also been awarded for her diversity work. A prominent professional network for LGBT+ and ally (heterosexual and cisgender people who actively support of LGBT+ equality) senior executives, <a href="https://www.out-standing.org/">OUTstanding</a>, awarded Brind-Woody as one of its five executive individuals in the "OUTstanding Hall of Fame" for "proving their commitment year in, year out to fostering environments of inclusivity across the businesses they oversee."Brind-Woody spoke to Business Insider about how IBM, which has around 400,000 employees, has made significant strides in LGBT+ diversity at work and has helped shaped the wider tech and business communities with their policies and strategies.Business Insider's Lianna Brinded: What has IBM done over the last few years to promote greater LGBT+ diversity within the company as well as influence or shape other major corporations in tech or otherwise?Claudia Brind-Woody: We have done a lot over several years that have influenced a lot of other corporations to follow us. For example, we have an HR indicator that allows employees to self-identify as LGBT+, so it isn't just an anonymous survey - it is logged in our system. This is the same identifier as if you are a women, or a person of colour. If you are able to self-identify within our system, it allows us to also cross-reference our top talent and help make sure a range of people get put forward for leadership training, bridge with mentors, and ensure we are helping them on their career paths.It helps them navigate the business and it's a best practice that is now shared with the likes of Citibank who has followed our process and procedure for employees. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Reuters</div></div></div>Brinded: How important are mentors and sponsors to helping get more LGBT+ employees into senior leadership roles?Brind-Woody: It is tremendously important. Mentoring and sponsors are significant in helping employees [excel within a company]. But at IBM we also do reverse mentoring, where LGBT+ employees mentor up the business to someone very senior like a country general manager and other senior executives within the company. This, therefore, gives them the opportunity to work with people and units in exchanging information on challenges LGBT+ workers face as well as creating more allies within the company.This has been really key in creating greater diversity because it has helped train straight allies [of the community] and change the climate at other offices where LGBT+ rights and understanding is a bit more hard like India. We have straight ally classes that help this.Brinded: What is the percentage in terms of LGBT+ employees in the IBM workforce?Brind-Woody: We don't have total number because not everyone chooses to be out, or some countries don't allow reporting on sexual orientation (Germany for example), or even countries where it is more difficult to be "out" can make reporting more difficult. However, looking at the numbers we have, as well as research and anonymous surveys, we are looking at 5-10% of the workforce. If you include people who self-identify as bisexual, the percentage is towards the top end of that range.What is more important is to remind people that if we assume all our clients are straight, we will be wrong around 10% of the time. We all need to align to serve people who are like us and diverse. Brinded: From a business point of view, how has greater diversity affected IBM? For example, what has the impact been in terms of talent retention or expansion in departments, as well as productivity?Brind-Woody: There have been several key takeaways. We have seen some amazing things. In cognitive computing and artificial intelligence, having greater diversity and us valuing diversity has been key for innovation in these units. Also by [creating this type of environment] we attract and retain a lot more talent.In the business development group, we have identified over $50 million worth of business opportunities [from greater LGBT+ diversity.] This is because there are more people who are close to the business that can bring business to LGBT+ decision makers and influencers within sectors. They are the people who are able to sell our stuff to senior executive levels within companies because we have the best practice [to foster] great client relationships that come from authentic connections.Brinded: So it seems productivity within IBM has improved greatly with greater focus on promoting diversity within the company?Brind-Woody: Absolutely. We found that ever since the 1980s, one of the senior vice presidents made a statement [following IBM's inclusion of the non-discrimination sexual orientation policies within its employment contracts].Brinded: IBM has around 400,000 employees across 170 countries. Where do you see the greatest challenge in growing LGBT+ diversity as well as educating straight allies in terms of those issues those employees face?Brind-Woody: Countries in Africa and the Middle East spring to mind as well as parts of Eastern Europe and parts of Asia. However, within the IBM walls, we adopt the "embassy model," which is where you make sure your company welcomes and includes all people where everyone is treated the same and is safe. That's the very minimum we do.We try to use our business power to help make a difference. For example, the benefits supplier that won our contract in India, was the first insurer of its kind in the country to recognise and cover same-sex couples as well as married hetero couples. We required that supplier to accurately put the sex of the couples in the benefits contracts. It is little things like that that move the needle.Brinded: How about in developed countries? For example, would you say the US is behind in terms of LGBT+ diversity and rights in tech, business and in general?Brind-Woody: The US is behind the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> [on this] for sure. It has made the some of the right progress, and recent rulings in Supreme Court have supported, this but there is backlash from certain states on LGBT+ rights, and what you have seen for the transgender community. The UK is ahead of the US on this.What the LGBT+ community want is to just want it to be ordinary [to be LGBT+] so that you are just seen to be valued on merit and what you bring to the business without someone thinking twice about you being LGBT+. I have talked about this before and how the "cost of thinking twice" can hinder productivity. When our employees don't have to think twice about struggling for the same benefits, recognition, or are afraid of being safe, then productivity goes up. Brinded: Speaking on communities that need greater advocacy, you have mentioned before how women have it doubly as hard in the work place. Why is that and do you still think this is the case in business and in tech?Brind-Woody: There is still the case of the double glass ceiling. Yes, women in business are still under-represented. They are like visible minorities. If you feel you get discrimination as a woman in the workplace, gay women may hesitate more in coming out as it's almost like putting up your hand again to be discriminated again for a second time.However, we are hoping to turn that around. We are very encouraged with the group <a href="http://lesbianswhotech.org/">Lesbians Who Tech</a> and who we partner with to find top talent [within that community].Brinded: Companies like IBM have such a large workforce that leading the charge on things like LGBT+ diversity can make a seismic change across sectors. Do you see it as up to businesses to make this change for society amid the backdrop of slow-changing governments?Brind-Woody: It's up to all of us. We can't wait on the government, NGOs, activists, we all have to do our parts. The roles we play - corporations, governments and activists - all need to find ways to work together. We at this corporation lead the way and influence businesses, like our suppliers, and governments need us to invest in a country, lab or manufacturer.
