It is said that Astras used in Mahabharata probably might have also used technologies of emitting most dangerous rays like Gamma and others, which have exceptional powers to penetrate. Some Astras returns to the person who launches it, for instance, Krishna's Sudharsana Chakra. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The infamous Unabomber Ted Kaczynski has died at age 81.</li><li>He ran a 17-year bombing campaign that killed three people and injured 23 others.</li></ul><p>WASHINGTON (AP) — Theodore "Ted" Kaczynski, the Harvard-educated mathematician who retreated to a dingy shack in the Montana wilderness and ran a 17-year bombing campaign that killed three people and injured 23 others, died Saturday. He was 81.</p><p>Branded the "Unabomber" by the FBI, Kaczynski died at the federal prison medical center in Butner, North Carolina, Kristie Breshears, a spokesperson for the federal Bureau of Prisons, told The Associated Press. He was found unresponsive in his cell early Saturday morning and was pronounced dead around 8 a.m., she said. A cause of death was not immediately known.</p><p>Before his transfer to the prison medical facility, he had been held in the federal Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado, since May 1998, when he was sentenced to four life sentences plus 30 years for a campaign of terror that set universities nationwide on edge. He admitted to committing 16 bombings from 1978 and 1995, permanently maiming several of his victims.</p><p>Years before the Sept. 11 attacks and the anthrax mailing, the "Unabomber's" deadly homemade bombs changed the way Americans mailed packages and boarded airplanes, even virtually shutting down air travel on the West Coast in July 1995.</p><p>He forced The Washington Post, in conjunction with The New York Times, to make the agonizing decision in September 1995 to publish his 35,000-word manifesto, "Industrial Society and Its Future," which claimed modern society and technology was leading to a sense of powerlessness and alienation.</p><p>But it led to his undoing. Kaczynski's brother David and David's wife, Linda Patrik, recognized the treatise's tone and tipped off the FBI, which had been searching for the "Unabomber" for years in nation's longest, costliest manhunt.</p><p>Authorities in April 1996 found him in a 10-by-14-foot (3-by-4-meter) plywood and tarpaper cabin outside Lincoln, Montana, that was filled with journals, a coded diary, explosive ingredients and two completed bombs.</p><p>As an elusive criminal mastermind, the Unabomber won his share of sympathizers and comparisons to Daniel Boone, Edward Abbey and Henry David Thoreau.</p><p>But once revealed as a wild-eyed hermit with long hair and beard who weathered Montana winters in a one-room shack, Kaczynski struck many as more of a pathetic loner than romantic anti-hero.</p><p>Even in his own journals, Kaczynski came across as not a committed revolutionary, but a vengeful hermit driven by petty grievances.</p><p>"I certainly don't claim to be an altruist or to be acting for the 'good' (whatever that is) of the human race," he wrote on April 6, 1971. "I act merely from a desire for revenge."</p><p>A psychiatrist who interviewed Kaczynski in prison diagnosed him as a paranoid schizophrenic.</p><p>"Mr. Kaczynski's delusions are mostly persecutory in nature," Sally Johnson wrote in a 47-page report. "The central themes involve his belief that he is being maligned and harassed by family members and modern society."</p><p>Kaczynski hated the idea of being viewed as mentally ill and when his lawyers attempted to present an insanity defense, he tried to fire them. When that failed, he tried to hang himself with his underwear.</p><p>Kaczynski eventually pleaded guilty rather than let his defense team proceed with an insanity defense.</p><p>"I'm confident that I'm sane," Kaczynski told Time magazine in 1999. "I don't get delusions and so forth."</p><p>He was certainly brilliant.</p><p>Kaczynski skipped two grades to attend Harvard at age 16 and had published papers in prestigious mathematics journals. His explosives were carefully tested and came in meticulously handcrafted wooden boxes sanded to remove possible fingerprints. Later bombs bore the signature "FC" for "Freedom Club."</p><p>The FBI called him the "Unabomber" because his early targets seemed to be universities and airlines. An altitude-triggered bomb he mailed in 1979 went off as planned aboard an American Airlines flight; a dozen people aboard suffered from smoke inhalation.</p><p>Kaczynski killed computer rental store owner Hugh Scrutton, advertising executive Thomas Mosser and timber industry lobbyist Gilbert Murray. California geneticist Charles Epstein and Yale University computer expert David Gelernter were maimed by bombs two days apart in June 1993.</p><p>Mosser was killed in his North Caldwell, New Jersey, home on Dec. 10, 1994, a day he was supposed to be picking out a Christmas tree with his family. His wife, Susan, found him grievously wounded by a barrage of razor blades, pipes and nails.</p><p>"He was moaning very softly," she said at Kaczynski's 1998 sentencing. "The fingers on his right hand were dangling. I held his left hand. I told him help was coming. I told him I loved him."</p><p>When Kaczynski stepped up his bombs and letters to newspapers and scientists in 1995, experts speculated the "Unabomber" was jealous of the attention being paid to Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh.</p><p>A threat to blow up a plane out of Los Angeles before the end of the July Fourth weekend threw air travel and mail delivery into chaos. The "Unabomber" later claimed it was a "prank."</p><p>The Washington Post printed the "Unabomber's" manifesto at the urging of federal authorities, after the bomber said he would desist from terrorism if a national publication published his treatise.</p><p>Patrik had had a disturbing feeling about her brother-in-law even before seeing the manifesto and eventually persuaded her husband to read a copy at the library. After two months of arguments, they took some of Ted Kaczynski's letters to Patrik's childhood friend Susan Swanson, a private investigator in Chicago.</p><p>Swanson in turn passed them along to former FBI behavior science expert Clint Van Zandt, whose analysts said whoever wrote them had also probably written the "Unabomber's" manifesto.</p><p>"It was a nightmare," David Kaczynski, who as a child had idolized his older brother, said in a 2005 speech at Bennington College. "I was literally thinking, 'My brother's a serial killer, the most wanted man in America.'"</p><p>Swanson turned to a corporate lawyer friend, Anthony Bisceglie, who contacted the FBI.</p><p>David Kaczynski wanted his role kept confidential, but his identity quickly leaked out and Ted Kaczynski vowed never to forgive his younger sibling. He ignored his letters, turned his back on him at court hearings and described David Kaczynski in a 1999 book draft as a "Judas Iscariot (who) ... doesn't even have enough courage to go hang himself."</p><p>Ted Kaczynski was born May 22, 1942, in Chicago, the son of second-generation Polish Catholics — a sausage-maker and a homemaker. He played the trombone in the school band, collected coins and skipped the sixth and 11th grades.</p><p>His high school classmates thought him odd, particularly after he showed a school wrestler how to make a mini-bomb that detonated during chemistry class.</p><p>Harvard classmates recalled him as a lonely, thin boy with poor personal hygiene and a room that smelled of spoiled milk, rotting food and foot powder.</p><p>After graduate studies at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, he got a job teaching math at the University of California at Berkeley but found the work difficult and quit abruptly. In 1971, he bought a 1½-acre parcel about 4 miles (6 kilometers) outside of Lincoln and built a cabin there without heating, plumbing or electricity.</p><p>He learned to garden, hunt, make tools and sew, living on a few hundred dollars a year.</p><p>He left his cabin in Montana in the late 1970s to work at a foam rubber products manufacturer outside Chicago with his father and brother. But when a female supervisor dumped him after two dates, he began posting insulting limericks about her and wouldn't stop.</p><p>His brother fired him and Ted Kaczynski soon returned to the wilderness to continue plotting his vengeful killing spree.</p><p>___</p><p>Balsamo reported from Miami. The thoughts expressed are those of the author.</li></ul><p>Diplomats spend their whole careers living and traveling overseas. They have to immediately immerse themselves in a wide range of places around the planet. These ambassadors and attaches deftly manage to cross borders and cultures. I had to learn a lot of these nuanced navigational skills during my 12 years as an American diplomat. So let me share a few of their tricks and tradecraft to try out on your next trip.</p><h2><strong>Be ready for the worst</strong></h2><p>The first thing a diplomat does when planning a mission is to prepare for what could go wrong. I've found that too few regular travelers take the time to consider this crucial step. So before you head out on a trip, explore recent risks and consider what you would do in the event of a crisis. </p><p>The State Department has a decent overall <a href="https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel.html">guide</a> to the latest threats. But, honestly, you are better off reading some of the news from the country. Don't let it overwhelm you, but even if you don't speak the language, use an online translator to get a sense of what's happening with security, <keyword id="6358883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="politics">politics</keyword>, and major upcoming events. Also, make sure you set up an alert to notify you of major news stories in the countries where you will be traveling.</p><h2><strong>Always have a back up</strong></h2><p>My second piece of advice is to pack extras. It can be hard to know exactly how easy it will be to locate your essentials when you're <keyword id="6354692" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword>ing or how difficult, expensive it is to acquire. Figure out which are the must-have items - from cables to razors - and make sure you travel with a backup. This also goes for clothes. Packing an extra day or two comes in handy when you're delayed or need to extend the trip. An extra pair of socks made my return from Nepal substantially less stinky, after the King commandeered our plane in Kathmandu. </p><h2><strong>Ditch the guidebook and talk to locals</strong></h2><p>Even in the past, I never liked the published guidebooks and with so much information online these days, you really don't need one. They end up sending you to a lot of places that are crowded with other tourists. To get a sense of what you're missing out on, try reading a guide to your town. Once you've seen the highlights in the book, use that as a jumping off point to research, read reviews, and actually talk to people who live in the place. </p><p>Let me expand on the last point. Traveling is a great excuse to reach out to someone. It could be someone who works in your field, a local organization related to something you're interested in, or even their embassy.</p><p>Send this connection an email, "Hey, I'm going to be traveling to your country. Appreciate any insights or recommendations you can share." It's amazing how many people welcome the chance to share a few suggestions about their home with visitors from other countries. You'll also often be surprised by the opportunities that arise from those personal connections.</p><h2><strong>Look, and talk, like a local</strong></h2><p>If you don't want to stick out as a tourist or at the very least aim to be less of a target for hawkers or unsavory opportunists, then try to blend in. One of the best ways you can project savviness is by carrying a local newspaper or magazine. It will give pickpockets and peddlers pause.</p><p>Speaking of local, it's a good idea to learn a few phrases of the language before you go. Using a greeting when you enter a store or a taxi helps to also project a level of familiarity with your surroundings and respect for their culture. </p><p>It's also worthwhile to spend a little time learning about some of the major linguistic differences, which tend to explain a lot about how the world can be viewed through various lenses. In Spanish, for instance, there is <a href="https://english.elpais.com/elpais/2016/01/18/inenglish/1453114524_537822.html">no word for "compromise."</a> While in the Niarafolo language of Northern Ivory Coast, there is no <a href="https://www.google.com/books/edition/Nine_Hills_to_Nambonkaha/lsjnaTC8bkMC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=no+word+for+yesterday+Nine+Hills+to+Nambonkaha&amp;pg=PT316&amp;printsec=frontcoverntsec=frontcover">word</a> for yesterday or tomorrow.  That can be useful information to know before you go. </p><h2><strong>Keep an open mind</strong></h2><p>Too many times on our trips we are myopically focused on getting from point A to point B. One of the best parts of being in a foreign country is the chance to experience a whole different way of life. Take in the unique smells, sounds, and rhythms. </p><p>Henry David Thoreau was fond of sauntering. It's a kind of experiential walking, where you are taking in the small, subtle elements. This is one of my favorite things to do, wandering streets and often making exceptional, unexpected discoveries.</p><p>Diplomats are undoubtedly some of the world's best travelers. While you may not be able to spend as long or go as far on the road, there is a lot to be gained by deploying some of the same tactics. It may help keep you out of trouble and also to see less-discovered side of the country. </p><p>Perhaps the last diplomatic lesson is to remember that travel is a two-way road. You are experiencing a new place and people. But, they too are exposed to a bit of your country through your presence. So, be a good ambassador.</p>

Liz Cheney as conference chair.</p><hr /><p><strong></strong></p><p><strong>1. FACING A NEW DAY: </strong>The end is in sight. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's recommendation that the roughly 118 million Americans who are fully vaccinated <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cdc-no-need-to-physically-distance-if-youre-fully-vaccinated-2021-5">can almost entirely ditch their masks and stop social distancing is the biggest move yet to moving past the pandemic in the US</a>. This doesn't mean mask mandates will end immediately. There never was a sweeping federal mask mandate, so some states and cities were already phasing out their requirements before the announcement, and others may soon follow. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cdc-masks-fully-vaccinated-private-companies-require-2021-5">Private companies can also set their own requirements</a>.</p><p>But it does show that federal officials are listening to the criticisms that they've been too slow and too cautious. It also provides the largest incentive yet to many who remain skeptical about getting vaccinated, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cities-and-states-incentivizing-covid-19-vaccines-2021-5">though winning $1 million is nice too</a>.</p><ul><li><strong>But what about people who aren't vaccinated?: </strong>"We know the vaccines are so effective that fully vaccinated people, even if they are mixing and mingling with people who haven't done that, are at relatively low risk of getting infected," Dr. Francis Collins, the director of the National Institutes of Health, said on CNN.</li></ul><p><strong>Almost everywhere is not everywhere: </strong>For now, the CDC is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cdc-no-need-to-physically-distance-if-youre-fully-vaccinated-2021-5">still advising Americans to wear masks on planes, trains, and buses, along with other forms of public transportation</a>. People with weakened immune systems are also advised to talk to their doctor.</p><ul><li><strong>There's still a lot to sort out:</strong> <a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/05/13/996727768/schools-are-deciding-what-the-new-cdc-mask-guidelines-mean-for-the-classroom">So far, vaccines are authorized for those ages 12 and up</a>. Dr. Anthony Fauci said on CNN that schools should be "should be open five days, full blast, just the way it was before."</li></ul><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cdc-mask-guidance-chart-for-vaccinated-unvaccinated-people-2021-5"><strong>The new guidelines are explained in this handy chart:</strong></a></p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cdc-mask-guidance-chart-for-vaccinated-unvaccinated-people-2021-5"><div type="image" title="cdc new mask rules" height="1412" width="1542" msid="82629800" hostid="261"></div></a></p><p><strong>The announcement shocked many public-health experts: </strong>Hundreds of epidemiologists, many of whom have been more cautious in their guidance during the pandemic, told The New York Times that <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/13/upshot/epidemiologists-coronavirus-masks.html?action=click&amp;module=Spotlight&amp;pgtype=HomepageHomepage">they expected public mask-wearing for another year</a>.</p><ul><li><strong>Experts tell my colleagues the new guidelines are really a test for how much risk you're willing to tolerate: </strong>"<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cdc-guidelines-no-masks-vaccinated-people-expert-opinion-2021-5">It doesn't mean that you have to take your mask off</a>," said Anne Rimoin, an epidemiology professor at the University of California at Los Angeles. <p>According to <a href="http://spp.sagepub.com/content/early/2014/07/11/1948550614542345.abstract" target="_blank">a new study</a> led by Northwestern professor Dennis Y. Hsu, bass-heavy music can make you more confident. </p>
<p>"The effect of music appears to manifest itself not only in its ability to entertain," <a href="http://www.psmag.com/navigation/books-and-culture/music-power-behavior-thinking-want-feel-powerful-pump-bass-87611/?utm_source=nextdraft&amp;utm_medium=email" target="_blank">he and his colleagues write</a>, "but also in the ability to imbue humans with a real sense of power." </p>
<p>As <a href="http://www.psmag.com/navigation/books-and-culture/music-power-behavior-thinking-want-feel-powerful-pump-bass-87611/?utm_source=nextdraft&amp;utm_medium=email" target="_blank">Tom Jacobs notes at Pacific Standard</a>, writers like <span></span><a href="http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/h/henrydavid120856.html" target="_blank">Henry David Thoreau</a> and <span></span><a href="http://www.quotationspage.com/quotes/George_Eliot/" target="_blank">George Eliot</a> have noted how fiery music can stoke you into action, but the new research lends empirical evidence. </p>
<p>Jacobs <a href="http://www.psmag.com/navigation/books-and-culture/music-power-behavior-thinking-want-feel-powerful-pump-bass-87611/?utm_source=nextdraft&amp;utm_medium=email" target="_blank">summarizes one such experiment</a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>... 78 undergraduates listened to an original, two-minute-long piece of instrumental music in one of two conditions: With the bass line prominent or subdued. Afterwards, they "rated how powerful, dominant, and determined they felt," as well as how strongly they were feeling three positive emotions (happiness, excitement, and enthusiasm).</span></p>
<p><span>The result: People who heard the heavy bass line felt more powerful, dominant, and determined than their easy-listening peers.</span></p>
<p>Why? Researchers chalked it up to the associations we have between deep sounds and authority, calling out how <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYZoxY3sawE" target="_blank">James Earl Jones sounded when he voiced Darth Vader in "Star Wars."</a> Similarly,<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span><a href="http://edition.cnn.com/2013/05/29/business/ceo-deep-voice-more-money/" target="_blank">CEOs with deep voices make more money</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">. </span></p>
<p>This connection extends to whatever summer jam you have pumping through your headphones. </p>
<p><span>"People can hear specific music components that express a sense of power and mimic those feelings internally," the study authors write.</span></p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/554b79866bb3f7fe59881fc6-980-735/venice-beach-california-5.jpg?maxX=600" border="0" alt="venice beach california" width="600"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/respres/15693495257">Flickr / Jeff Turner</a></span></p><p class="caption">Venice Beach, California, where Terry K. originally rented an apartment.</p></img></div><p></p></div>In the summer of 2012, Terry K. rented out his Venice Beach apartment and moved into his office, better able to navigate the elaborate production that was keeping his living situation secret from his coworkers than to pay rent in Los Angeles.</p><p>"Terry K." isn't his real name - it's the pseudonym of the writer who <a href="http://www.salon.com/2015/04/30/i_secretly_lived_in_my_office_for_500_days/">tells his story on Salon</a>, who presumably wouldn't want his company to know that he used his cubicle as a bedroom for over a year.</p><p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-where-rent-was-most-expensive-in-2014-2015-1">Average rent in the Los Angeles</a> metro area is about $1,300 a month, and it's estimated that to buy a median-priced home, you'd need <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/salary-to-buy-a-home-2015-2">an income of $89,500 a year</a>, making the area one of the most expensive in the US.</p><p>Residents of cities with similar housing costs - like New York and San Francisco - have <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-housing-all-across-la-costs-so-much-2014-8">higher average incomes</a> than people living in LA. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-housing-all-across-la-costs-so-much-2014-8">A UCLA study</a> found that tenants in the area spend nearly half (47%) of their income on rent.</p><p>K. explains his situation on <a href="http://www.salon.com/2015/04/30/i_secretly_lived_in_my_office_for_500_days/">Salon</a>:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">I'd been working two jobs - 60 hours a week to keep an apartment I rarely had time to enjoy. Then, disaster struck. Company raises and bonuses were frozen. My identity was stolen. I got a hefty hospital bill for a surgery earlier that year. With existing student loans, a car payment and my rent set for its maximum-allowable annual increase under the California law, I started to wonder: What happened to my American Dream?</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">I had little left to sacrifice. Without money, I had two choices: Give up my dreams of working creatively or surrender my time working even more. Either way, the outlook was gloomy. Until I remembered my ace in the hole.</p><p>That ace in the hole was his office, which, along with everything in the neighborhood, was closed and empty at night. And once he moved in, sleeping on an air mattress, he realized that his quality of life was actually improving.</p><p>He was able to save over $20,000, and free up the time and money to travel and pursue his interests. At his annual performance review, his boss complimented the improvement in his work, and noticed that he also seemed happier.</p><p>Even when the opportunity presented itself to move back into an apartment with a roommate, he didn't do it. He writes:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Having spent over a year rent-free, I realized I valued how I spent my expenses differently. Dropping over a grand every month on a single budget item felt like it ought to result in overwhelming returns. Instead, the housing options were bland. Each had a laundry list of glaring flaws - aging units with no parking, thin walls with no outdoor space, poor walkability and a long commute. What's more was the sense of entitlement on behalf of many landowners, like I was doing them a favor by handing over 40 percent of my income for a glorified doghouse. The transaction felt oddly imbalanced, a product of seriously misplaced supply and demand.</p><p>When his company went under and he was in the first round of layoffs, "I lost my job and my home all in one, but I saved over $20,000 in living costs and 216 hours of commuting," K. writes.</p><p>Today, he lives in a tiny home attached to his truck, working a few part time jobs about 20 hours a week and writing. He says:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">I finished building it before I left the office. Everything I needed - a plywood base of shelving housing a tiny fridge, a portable butane stove, a sturdy water jug, a paper towel rack - I was fortunate enough to purchase while money was good. Mostly I stay local, picking up odd jobs while writing, pursuing the career I'd always wanted but never had the time to try. It's a different routine from the office. 1.<strong> What was your first job or business?</strong><br />
 <br />
I joined Seagram right out of Cornell University as a RAM (retail account managers). This was the training program, and I learned the basics of merchandising and selling from the best-managed beverage company in the world at the time. It was a valuable way to start my career in the beverage industry.<br />
 <br />
2. <strong>What is the most difficult leadership lesson you’ve learned?</strong><br />
 <br />
In 1999 when I was 32, I created <a href="http://eskye.com/">eSkye.com</a>, the B2B internet company for the alcohol business. I raised more than USD55 million from venture capital investors and grew my team from zero to 122 in 18 months. When the <a href="http://dot.com/">dot.com</a> crash happened and the venture community was running for the hills in all deals, some of them came after their investment in my company. These were some of the largest funds in the world and a very powerful group of investors. I did not allow myself to be intimidated by them and stood my ground. I ended up buying them all out.<br />
 <br />
During this time, I had to shrink the company down to a team of five. I personally had recruited and hired most of the team and so letting more than 100 of my team go was the hardest thing I had ever experienced. I chose to personally let each person go and to be up front and honest with them that it was not their fault, but rather, our situation. Most of those people took it well and understood. I also committed to helping as many of them get placed in new companies as I could and actively helped by using my network. I can honestly say I’m good friends with most of that group of people today.<br />

3.<strong> What is your favorite beer, wine or spirit and why?</strong><br />
 <br />
Beach Whiskey. It’s my newest creation and bringing whiskey to the beach is not just a brand, it’s a movement. I welcome all of you to join me.<br />

4. <strong>How has being in <keyword id="852310" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="YPO">YPO</keyword> positively affected your business or leadership?</strong><br />
 <br />
In 2003, when I joined YPO, my kids were 13, 11, 8 and 3. Today they are 26, 24, 21 and 16 … wow nothing like kids to express the passing of time! Since then, I’ve been blessed with a lifetime’s worth of experiences both professional and personal as a direct result of YPO. This was not an accident. It did not just happen to me. You see, I don’t believe in doing things part-way. Either you commit or you do not. When I joined YPO I made a commitment to give and get as much as I possibly could.<br />
<br />
Henry David Thoreau said, “True friendship can afford true knowledge. It does not depend on darkness and ignorance.” This is YPO.<br />
<br />
From Australia to India to the United Kingdom to cities throughout the U.S., YPO members have been welcoming and helpful to me and my family. I know this because I dined at their homes, visited their businesses, attended their events and engaged with them in business. I know the last 12 years of my life have been greatly enhanced by this commitment.<br />

<strong>5. One insight he would like to share from Seth Godin’s TED Talk:</strong><br />

Seth Godin argues the Internet has ended mass marketing and revived a human social unit from the distant past: tribes. Founded on shared ideas and values, tribes give ordinary people the power to lead and make big change. He urges us to do so.<br />
 <br />
I believe brands have to figure out how to reach their tribes and how to engage with them. Notice, I did not say “create” their tribes. This is an important distinction. I believe tribes are discovered not created. Brands who overtly try to create one typically struggle. If a following is not organic, today’s savvy consumers sense it. I think brands can make themselves relevant and worthy of a following and then as that following begins to show signs of life can play a role in fostering and accelerating it.<br />

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5390ca4eeab8eabf3f6ba573-1200-900/bi_sciencegraphics_pills-01.jpg" border="0" alt="Pill bottle with pills and medicine spilling out of it"><p class="source"><span>Skye Gould/Business Insider</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div>As far as medical technology goes, there's never been a better time to be alive than the present.</p><p>Before antibiotics were discovered, diseases caused by bacteria (like tuberculosis, diphtheria, pneumonia, and various infections) <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm4829a1.htm">were the leading causes of death in America.</a></p><p>What if all those people who died had somehow been able to benefit from our modern technology?</p><p>Today, some people are <a href="http://cryogenics.nist.gov/AboutCryogenics/about%20cryogenics.htm">freezing their bodies or heads at death</a> in hopes of future cures for what ails them. Their goal is to be revived and cured. While several companies will take your money to freeze your body or head, there isn't solid <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> showing that this will work.</p><p>We know it's even crazier to think that we could have successfully cryogenically frozen people in the past, when medical technology was far behind what we have today, but let's have a little fun, shall we?</p><p>Here are seven historic people (of thousands - likely millions) who died of things we could treat today, theoretically, if we had their thawed, freshly-dead and somehow rejuvenated bodies to work with:</p><h2>Jane Austen</h2><p>Jane Austen, that beloved author of "Pride and Prejudice" and five other novels, <a href="http://www.jasna.org/info/about_austen.html">died in 1817</a> at the age of 41. She'd been ill for quite a while, according to letters she sent in the last year of her life. Sir Zachary Cope was the <a href="http://www.orchard-gate.com/bmj.htm">first to diagnose Austen</a> with Addison's disease, in a 1964 article in the British Medical Journal. Interpreting the weakness, back pain, stomach upset, faintness, and skin discoloration Austen described in her letters (and symptoms she didn't mention), Cope thought Addison's disease was probably what killed her.</p><p>In people with <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/addisons-disease/basics/definition/con-20021340">Addison's disease</a>, the adrenal glands don't produce enough of the hormones cortisol and aldosterone. These hormones help coordinate metabolism and blood pressure to keep the body running smoothly. When there's not enough of them in the body, people with Addison's suffer from weak and painful muscles, blood pressure low enough to faint, discolored skin, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. If the hormone levels get low enough, it <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/addisons-disease/basics/treatment/con-20021340">can trigger a life-threatening "addisonian crisis"</a> as blood pressure and blood sugar drop, which may have been what happened to Austen.</p><p>If she did indeed die in an addisonian crisis, today doctors would treat Austen with an IV of hydrocortisone, saline, and sugar to bring her back, then she'd have to keep taking the hormones her adrenal glands weren't producing. Perhaps she would be able to <a href="http://www.jasna.org/info/about_austen.html">finish a seventh novel</a>, "Sanditon," that she'd started but didn't finish before she died. Mycobacterium tuberculosis is <a href="http://report.nih.gov/nihfactsheets/ViewFactSheet.aspx?csid=31">to blame for tuberculosis' symptoms</a>: fever, a flushed complexion, and a dry, persistent cough that brings up blood.</p><p>Though drug-resistant tuberculosis is a concern today, it's likely Leigh's historical case could be treated with antibiotics, if we were able to bring her back.</p><p>Before Leigh's time,<a href="http://www.cmnewsletter.com/article/S0196-4399(09)00048-8/fulltext">tuberculosis also did in Emily Bronte</a>, Edgar Allen Poe, Walt Whitman, Henry David Thoreau, and John Keats. It's not that the disease was especially popular among authors in the 19th century, it was just that common for everyone. Thanks to effective antibiotics and changes in living conditions, deaths from tuberculosis have <a href="http://report.nih.gov/nihfactsheets/ViewFactSheet.aspx?csid=31">gone down steadily</a> since the beginning of the 20th century.</p><h2>James Garfield</h2><p>America's 20th president didn't even hold the office a full year before he was <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/1600/presidents/jamesgarfield">assassinated in 1881</a>. But it wasn't really the assassin's bullet that killed him - it was the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/02/books/review/destiny-of-the-republic-by-candice-millard-book-review.html?_r=0">doctors who didn't wash their hands</a> or instruments before they tried to remove the bullet from his back. Garfield's wound became infected, and he hung around 11 excruciating weeks before dying. It's more a change in medical practice to sterilize wounds and medical tools with antiseptics (which were around at the time) than an actual technological advance that could've saved Garfield. Still, he'd have a better shot today with modern antibiotics.</p><p>Though Garfield's case is one-of-a-kind, he's not too different from the thousands of <a href="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0891552004000236">Civil War soldiers who died from wound infections</a>. Antibiotics, antiseptics, and sterile operating and examining procedures would have saved a lot of lives.</p><h2>Prince Leopold</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/51ee8dce69bedd8136000000-1200-1715/queen victoria i.jpg" border="0" alt="Queen Victoria I"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e3/Queen_Victoria_by_Bassano.jpg">upload.wikimedia.org</a></span></p><p class="caption">Queen Victoria.</p></img></div><p></p></div></div>Hemophilia <a href="https://www.hemophilia.org/Bleeding-Disorders/History-of-Bleeding-Disorders">ran in the genes of Europe's royal families</a> in the 19th and 20th centuries, likely because Queen Victoria of England was a carrier, had many children, and in those days royals had a tradition of marrying other royals. Her own son, Prince Leopold, had the disease, meaning his blood <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/hemophilia/basics/definition/con-20029824">lacked the proteins to make it clot</a> after a cut. He <a href="https://www.hemophilia.org/Bleeding-Disorders/History-of-Bleeding-Disorders">died</a> in 1884, age 30, after a fall that caused him to bleed heavily.</p><p>We don't have a cure for hemophilia today, but we know <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/hemophilia/basics/treatment/con-20029824">how to treat</a> it. Prince Leopold could get regular treatment that would help his blood clot, and he could get an emergency dose of clotting factors if he started bleeding profusely. He would have a much better chance of making it past 30.</p><h2>Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky</h2><p>Though there's controversy surrounding the death of the composer who brought us "Swan Lake" and "The Nutcracker," <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/classical/tchaikovsky/atoz/tchaik_d_death.shtml">cholera is most likely what killed Tchaikovsky</a>. He probably got cholera from drinking water or eating food with Vibrio cholerae, the bacteria <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/cholera/general/index.html">responsible for the disease</a>, in it. Tchaikovsky reportedly took ill the evening of October 20, 1893, and was diagnosed with cholera the next day. His symptoms might have included diarrhea, vomiting, and leg cramps before dying of kidney failure as a complication of all the body fluids lost.</p><p>Today, cholera is treated primarily by drinking or getting an IV (if it's an emergency) of a solution of salts, sugars, and water to <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/cholera/general/index.html">replace the lost </a><a href="http://www.cdc.gov/cholera/general/index.html">bodily fluids and electrolytes</a>. Antibiotics would have also helped Tchaikovsky, if they had existed. But if he was actually killed by poisoning, as some <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/classical/tchaikovsky/atoz/tchaik_d_death.shtml">conspiracy theories suggest</a>, all bets are off.</p><h2>René Descartes</h2><p>You probably know at least one thing Descartes said: "I think, therefore I am." The famous philosopher <a href="http://www.egs.edu/library/rene-descartes/biography/">died in 1650 of pneumonia</a>, apparently contracted as his health declined from living in Sweden's harsh climate and getting up at 5 a.m. to tutor the queen in philosophy.</p><p>We can't know whether it was bacteria, a virus, or a fungus that infected Descartes's lungs to <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/pneumonia/basics/definition/con-20020032">make them fill up with fluid</a> so he couldn't breathe, but if was bacteria, <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/pneumonia/basics/treatment/con-20020032">antibiotics could have helped</a> him. While pneumonia is still a concern today, especially for people over 65, we have a lot more resources to treat it than the likes of Charlemagne, Robert E. Lee, Victor Hugo, and Benjamin Franklin had when <a href="http://www.cmnewsletter.com/article/S0196-4399(09)00048-8/fulltext">they died</a> of it long ago.</p><h2>Wilbur Wright</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table Full"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/4feb14816bb3f77926000003-1200-750/206311main_wright_brothers_full.jpg" border="0" alt="wright brothers first flight famous photo"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/image_feature_976.html">Nasa</a></span></p><p class="caption">The Wright brothers, </p></img></div><p></p></div></div>One of first men to fly <a href="http://airandspace.si.edu/exhibitions/wright-brothers/online/age/1914/typhoid.cfm">died</a> from a very common cause for his time: typhoid fever. <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/nczved/divisions/dfbmd/diseases/typhoid_fever/">Infection with the bacteria S</a><a href="http://www.cdc.gov/nczved/divisions/dfbmd/diseases/typhoid_fever/">almonella Typhi</a> not only causes the fever the disease is named for, but also weakness, stomach pains, headache, and a rash. Wilbur Wright was 45 when he died in 1912, but today doctors could treat him with antibiotics and he'd probably recover.</p><p>While we're dreaming big, let's also consider the 27,058 Union soldiers who <a href="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0891552004000236">died of typhoid fever</a> during the Civil War, about 36% of all the Union soldiers diagnosed with the disease. Two thirds of the soldiers who died in the Civil War died from disease, not battle wounds. We'd be able to treat them much more effectively today.</p><p>All that's not to say no one dies of any of these diseases anymore, unfortunately.</p><p>The <a href="http://report.nih.gov/nihfactsheets/ViewFactSheet.aspx?csid=31">WHO reported</a> 1.8 million deaths from tuberculosis in 2008, making it one of the leading causes of death in the world. People with HIV are more vulnerable to infection by tuberculosis, and antibiotic-resistant strains of the bacteria responsible for the disease are increasingly problematic.</p><p>Really, antibiotic-resistant <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/antibiotic-resistant-superbugs-are-causing-bacterial-infections-2014-12">bacteria are a terrifying prospect</a> across the board.
