The future of Indian merchandising and marketing business lies in promising start-ups in e-commerce and e-retail space and their innovative ideas, <keyword id="46894" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Sons">Tata Sons</keyword> Chairman Emeritus <keyword id="6360722" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="ratan-tata">Ratan Tata</keyword> said today. "For the last three years, I have been a free person (by not in command of the <keyword id="6355725" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Group">Tata Group</keyword>). If I look at the landscape, I see the future in young managers, the young start-ups. It is what I saw in United States in the 70s and 80s," he said. 

	"The ability to think out of the box has made the United States change its appearance from smoke-stacked companies to innovative companies that we see around us today such as Apple, Facebook, etc," Tata said. 
 

	He said this while interacting with the students of Great Lakes Institute of Management at its 11th convocation here. 
 In the past few months, Tata has invested in close to 10 companies, mostly in the e-commerce space, including Snapdeal and Chinese handset maker <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword>. 

	Elaborating on his interest on investing in start-ups, Tata said: "This is an opportunity to encourage and support young start-ups which are in new space such as e-commerce and e-retail, which in my view is going to change the face of Indian merchandising and marketing business.
 

	"So, in a small token way, because I am not a very wealthy person I have invested myself in some 10 companies hoping that some of them will succeed. I think ecommerce companies have great potential." 
 
 

	On his latest investment in Coimbatore based start-up firm Ampere Vehicles, he said, "I invested there because I was impressed by the management which had hands on experience.
 "It (electric vehicle space) is an area that is left untouched. It (the company) deserved little bit of support. I never met her (Ampere Vehicles CEO <keyword id="2951766" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hemalatha-Annamalai">Hemalatha Annamalai</keyword>) before. Never knew the company before. But when she asked for help, I decided to invest", he said. 

	To a query, Tata said most investments made by him in about 10 start-up companies were in "e-commerce" space and added that the "health" sector was looking more "promising".

New Delhi, Nov 15 () TiE Global on Friday launched 'TiE Women', a programme aimed at promoting women entrepreneurs across its 61 chapters globally.
 The initiative by the global not-for-profit organisation for entrepreneurs saw a fundraise of USD 70,000, contributed by TiE Charter Members during its two-day event.
 "I am excited to see the launch of TiE Women. Women represent the greatest opportunity for our ecosystem to make a huge impact, globally. 50-50 gender parity will be the norm in the TiE Global ecosystem and not the exception," TiE Global Chairperson Nitin Rai said at the TiE Global Summit 4.
 Hemalatha Annamalai, founder of Ampere Vehicles and president of TiE Coimbatore, will be the chair for TiE Women.
 She noted that the vision and goal of TiE Women is to 'Embrace, Engage and Empower' women entrepreneurs across the globe.
 "We need to empower women by providing them a safe space. This will allow them to develop skills and knowledge while mentoring them to systematically change the trajectories of their businesses leading to job creation," she added.
 The programme will mentor women entrepreneurs about funding, scaling the business, etc. Apart from the leadership, the programme is also supported by charter members from multiple chapters. SR SHW

TiE Global launches TiE Women; raises $70,000 in funding in 2 days

TiE Global, one of the world’s largest not-for-profit organization, announced the launch of <keyword id="8339747" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tie-women">TiE Women</keyword> to promote <keyword id="74945" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Women-Entrepreneurs">women entrepreneurs</keyword> across its 61 chapters globally. The initiative kick-started with a fundraise of $70,000 contributed by TiE Charter Members during the two-day event. Launching the initiative, Nitin Rai, Chairperson, TiE Global noted, ”I’m excited to see the launch of TiE Women. The foundation of its values and beliefs are well understood globally and the visible outcomes are constantly evolving. We would now like to encourage more women to participate in this process with measurable metrics and due governance.” TiE Women’s program approach will build upon best practices from local chapters’ women-centric initiatives. This will specifically result in capacity building; increased networking, knowledge-sharing and visibility; and a ‘safe space’ for women entrepreneurs to learn without inhibitions and judgment. This will also maximize the potential of women business leaders to receive funding to grow their enterprises. Through TiE Women, the focus will be to bring more women to take up entrepreneurship. The program will mentor women entrepreneurs about funding, scaling the business, etc. Apart from the leadership, the program is also supported by Charter Members from multiple chapters.

TiE Women raised $70,000 in just two days to support female entrepreneurs

The tussle between Tata Sons and <keyword id="6356895" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cyrus-Mistry">Cyrus Mistry</keyword> is growing murkier by the day. Mistry has alleged he was just a ‘lame duck’ chairman and many decisions by the group were taken emotionally. 
 
On the contrary, Tata Sons said Mistry was not a visionary Chairman and was drifting apart from the ethos of the Group. 
 
The war came out in open after Mistry, in his5-page e-mail, accused Tata Group of not giving him a free hand and taking irrational decision. Mistry alleged the board members never gave him free hand in decision making. 
 
However, Tata Sons, which is preparing a point-by-point reply to Mistry’s allegations, stated Mistry’s decisions were not in line with the Group. 
 
Elaborating one such case, source told ET the Strategy 2025 documents prepared Mistry in September 2016 was out rightly rejected by the Tata Sons as the Strategy 2025 was majorly dependent on the performance of just one company TCS - the group's cash cow. 
 
Sources told ET, board also found it did not have enough emphasis on returns on capital employed by Tata Sons. The plan, according to the board, also lacked financial discipline and vision for growth. It also did not offer much clarity on the strategic realignment of the group portfolio, including asset sales that were planned by Tata Sons under Mistry. 
 
Meanwhile, Tata Sons stated Mistry was unable to run the Group and there was no breach of corporate governance in its decision to remove Mistry. 
 As per various reports, prior to his removal, Mistry was asked to step down by <keyword id="6360722" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ratan-tata">Ratan Tata</keyword> and Harvard Business School dean Nitin Nohria, who is also a non-executive director of Tata Sons. 
 
Mistry refused, which precipitated a vote on the matter. 
 
"The board had overwhelmingly lost confidence in Mistry's ability to run the group and a majority of them voted in favour of his ouster. Many of them are successful businessmen in their own rights. It is also not unusual for a board to exercise its judgement and remove an incumbent chief executive officer or chairman without giving reasons,” an official in the know told ET. 
 
Tata Sons is also going to take on Mistry’s allegations about Tata Nano project. 
 
“The Nano plant could not be shut since it would stop the supply of the Nano gliders to an entity that makes electric cars and in which Tata has a stake,” a source told ET. 
 
The sources cited say the investment in question is in a Coimbatore based start-up called Ampere founded by Hemalatha Annamalai. 
 
The company sells electric vehicles like cycles, scooters, trolleys or special vehicles for the differently-abled predominantly in south and west India and has an annual production of 200-300 vehicles. The Nano plant in Gujarat on the other hand can make that many gliders and more in a day.
