Forbes puts his wealth at $17.5 billion, while <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/billionaires/profiles/petr-kellner/?sref=lAVQtUwz">Bloomberg</a> puts it at $15.7 billion.</p><p>Kellner is a self-made billionaire who began his career by selling office supplies, before embarking on an investment fund by borrowing $1 million against an office-supplies business, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/forbes-billionaire-list-2019-for-finance-2019-3">Insider's Debanjali Bose reported</a>. "In 17 years of operations this is the first time we've had to face an event of this measure."</p><p>The lodge, located at Judd Lake, charges <a href="https://www.tordrillomountainlodge.com/reservations/">$15,000 per person</a> for a week-long stay, which includes both accommodation and heli-skiing trips.</p><p>Alaska State Troopers said that the helicopter was an Airbus AS 350-B3 owned by Soloy Helicopters of Wasilla, Alaska.</p><p>A representative for the lodge told <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/29/us/helicopter-crash-alaska.html">The New York Times</a> that she did not know what caused the crash. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The Titan disaster has sparked interest in extreme travel, the founder of a luxury travel company says.</li><li>Brown and Hudson previously offered submersible trips to the Titanic in partnership with OceanGate.</li></ul><p>The founder of a travel company offering bespoke luxury trips says that the Titan disaster <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/titan-wont-stop-super-rich-going-on-extreme-adventures-lecturer-2023-6?r=US&amp;IR=T">hasn't deterred wealthy customers from extreme travel</a>.</p><p>Instead, it's done the opposite.</p><p>"People have got in touch recently as a result of this tragedy, not specifically about Titanic, but about other things," Philippe Brown, the founder of Brown and Hudson, told Insider. "Tragedies sometimes generate interest in other areas of extreme travel."</p><p>There's been a "marked increase" in interest in the company's high-level memberships, some customers have started new discussions about terrestrial projects, and no one has canceled their upcoming extreme-travel trips, he added.</p><p>OceanGate offered $250,000 trips for passengers to view the wreck of the Titanic. The Titan, its submersible, lost communication with its mothership less than two hours into its journey on June 18. The US Coast Guard says the submersible <a href="https://www.insider.com/titanic-sub-had-catastrophic-loss-of-pressure-chamber-coast-guard-2023-6">likely imploded</a>, <a href="https://www.insider.com/passengers-titan-submersible-dead-oceangate-titanic-2023-6">killing its five crew members</a> – OceanGate's CEO, three ultra-wealthy customers, and one of their sons.</p><p>Brown and Hudson had offered Titanic dives with OceanGate. Brown said that the experiences OceanGate offered were a "little bit light" and that Brown and Hudson made them "broader and longer" with more training. He said that since 2017, three of the company's clients had committed to go on the Titan but all "pulled out at the last minute," largely due to scheduling issues.</p><p>Brown and Hudson advisors meet with their clients to discuss their dream trips and map out vacations for the next few years. "For most of our clients, Titanic came into that," Brown said. Some wanted "bragging rights" or had always been fascinated by the ship, while others saw it as an investment and hoped to sell their spot in the future, he said.</p><p>"The kind of people who joined the waitlist for the Titanic are the same kind of people who would consider near-space flight," Brown said. "The investment required, is relatively speaking, is similar."</p><p>Wanting to travel adventurously and take risks is "a perfectly normal thing and accidents will not stop it," Brown said.</p><p>"People still fly when planes go down. They'll take helicopters when there are helicopter accidents," Brown said. "Mankind just moves forward, hopefully in a slightly more educated way and more risk-aware in some cases."</p><p>As well as paying for the trips, which can cost well over £100,000 ($127,400), Brown and Hudson's clients pay annual retainers of between £9,700 (about $12,350) and £100,000 ($127,400), plus taxes. The clients are mainly from North America, but many also come from Brazil, China, India, and the UK. They include investment bankers, Palo Alto tech workers, and "the kind of people that would go to Davos or the Sun Valley Conference," Brown said.</p><p>Popular activities include heli-skiing, polar activities, climbing at altitude, and trekking in remote locations. The company is currently planning an off-road biking trip in northern Syria for a group of 12 US investment bankers.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/see-the-high-risk-trips-wealthy-travelers-are-booking-2023-6">Expeditions, extreme sports, and trekking</a> have become status symbols among the world's wealthiest people.</p><p>"Beyond a certain point of wealth, you are not interested in another flashy car or the latest iPhone," Brown said, adding that material objects only have a short-term impact compared to experiences like adventure travel.</p><p>"Stuff tends to have less value and you don't need to show off quite as much because you know that you are worth a billion, so you don't need to display your wealth. It's just part of you."</p><p>Extreme travel can also appeal to people's competitive streak. "For some people it might be connected to one-upmanship or being the first to do something, being able to tell a cool story to your family or friends," Brown said.</p><p>"We are human and by nature, human beings are very rarely just happy with their lot," he continued, referring to <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/gb/basics/hedonic-treadmill" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hedonic adaptation</a>.</p><p>"If you go to a beautiful hotel with a great view, the day you walk in, you get a rush of dopamine, but three days later the view might suddenly not be quite as exciting ... When you've got a billion and you are making hundreds of thousands in your sleep, then the range of possibilities is just different and you can push boundaries."</p>

"It was a different side of things working with a global brand and travel at a high level - it was very demanding."</p><p>At the same time, Mackay-Lewis was realising that there were plenty of opportunities in the world of high net worth travel.</p><p>"I was looking at what other companies were doing, and it was a no brainer that there was so much not being created," he said.</p><p>When the pair met again, Mackay-Lewis was heading up marketing and communications for superyacht, private jet, and architecture design studio Winch Design in London.</p><p>"Having not seen each other since Army days, we bumped into each other in Amsterdam at a global superyacht forum," Carroll said. "Our imaginations [started] kicking off."</p><p>Together, they had experience both designing and leading superyacht expeditions around the world.</p><p>However, according to Mackay-Lewis, they thought: "Nobody is even taking them to where they should go." He said a lot of the world "wasn't being looked at" - so they wanted to create an organisation where they became "experts in the rest of the world outside the Caribbean/Mediterranean."</p><h2>Designing travel experiences for the super-rich</h2><p>Named after a tool used to maintain the bearing of a sea vessel, they launched <a href="https://pelorusx.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pelorus</a> in November 2017. The company plans travel experiences - such as skiing, fishing, hiking, surfing, or even tribal immersion - for individuals, families, or corporate groups using a global network of local experts, including scientists, archaeologists, marine biologists, and conservationists.</p><p>Both men are mountain leaders and advanced divers themselves, as well as fellows of the Royal Geographic Society, while Mackay-Lewis is also a paragliding pilot and skydiver.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Pelorus</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The company specialises in three categories: Private Adventures, Yacht Expeditions, and Special Projects.</p><p>Private Adventures are experience-led trips and involve "looking at the world in a different way," according to Mackay-Lewis, who added that Pelorus works with people from outside the travel industry - such as government agencies, conversation groups, and even BBC Natural History - to "enable us to be creative and make sure everything we offer is different from the travel sector."</p><p>The adventures can involve skiing, fishing, diving, safari, surfing, mountains, islands, and the desert, just to name a few.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Pelorus</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>One is a £40,000 ($52,000) Angola tribe experience, where you "come face to face with a handful of different tribes who have different heritage and traditions," according to Mackay-Lewis.</p><p>Taking a helicopter, travellers can visit a tribe who were formerly cannibals until the 80s.</p><p>"It's not for everyone, but it's still incredibly exciting," he said.</p><p>Meanwhile, Yacht Expeditions focus on going further afield and "developing new destinations for yachts around the world."</p><p>"Working with owners, captains, brokers, shipyards, ice pilots, marine biologists, and guides, PELORUS is able to discover uninhabited islands, hidden beaches, rarely-contacted tribes and incredible diving spots," according to a company statement.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Michael Lewis</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>This can mean a three-month cruising plan around South America, including trips to the Galapagos Islands to work with conservation groups or a visit to the jungle in Papa New Guinea, where "few people can operate safely and securely," for a cost of around £70,000 ($91,000) - although the company doesn't charter the yacht themselves.</p><h2>From counter-terrorism missions to 'Top Gear' challenges</h2><p>Finally, Special Projects are "production and events experiences" for clients where nothing is off-limits, according to Mackay-Lewis, and can involve anything from conservation projects to military experiences or espionage missions with counter-terrorism experts.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Pelorus</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"We're doing a Top Gear experience for private clients in Patagionia for 10 days," he said, adding that it targets "Land Rover enthusiasts" and costs around £50,000 ($65,000).</p><p>"Someone is giving them a brown envelope with a challenge each day," he said. At one point, a helicopter takes them to a glacier where they have lunch, spend the night, then paraglide to their vehicles that have been moved to another area.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Pelorus</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Other experiences have involved a group being picked up in Israel and having a "massive dessert party" in Jordan over a long weekend, or a treasure hunt across the Namibian desert involving camels, quad bikes, planes, and "a host of support staff to make it a reality."</p><p>"The planning was hellish, but the clients had an incredible time," according to Mackay-Lewis.</p><p>Carroll added that they're also involved with long-term planning - such as planning an experience to take a client's seven-year-old son through to his 18th birthday with a different experience every year, "built around what he's learning in school."</p><h2>So what does an experience like this cost?</h2><p>According to the company, a trip that lasts between six and 12 days can range between £25,000 ($33,000) and £70,000 ($91,000).</p><p>"We are looking predominantly at the high net worth and ultra high net worth market," Carroll said. "What we've seen traditionally is the older demographic of clients and baby boomers who have wealth behind them, either inherited or from a productive career, have the most time available for travel.</p><p>"We're rapidly seeing that moving down. [They are] sharing wealth amongst the family and want to do family trips and take younger generations away."</p><p>These family trips, though, involve seeing polar bears and the Northern Lights in Svalbard, off-roading in Patagonia, heli-skiing in Alaska, or cruising around the Philippines.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Pelorus</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Carroll added that while the UK has been at the forefront of this shift, they're also seeing clients from "across Europe, America, the Far East and Russia," as well as China.</p><h2>Buying experiences over assets</h2><p>He added that there's now a "different style of traveller" who wants to "get away from buying tangible assets and wants to buy experiences."</p><p>According to Carroll, Pelorus also gives something back, both through support work with the likes of the Blue Marine Foundation and World Land Trust, and by giving a percentage of thei<span style="color: #000000;">r profits to each foundation.</span></p><p>"People want to go out and not just see, but have a hands-on experience as well," he said. <p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Dickerson has been </span><a href="http://surfalaska.net/blog" target="_blank">photographing and surfing in Alaska</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> for the last fifteen years, finding all the best local spots and shooting pros and receational surfers for the likes of Red Bull, the New York Times, National Geographic, and others.</span></p>
<p>He calls himself the unofficial spokesperson for the Alaska surf community, which is a small but dedicated group of individuals willing to weather nearly frigid water temperatures and dangerous, constantly fluctuating tide conditions. </p>
<p>While he's surfed in more big name destinations such as California, Hawaii and Australia, he says that the biggest difference between Alaska and those spots isn't the cold water. It's the empty, breathtakingly beautiful surf spots that never get crowded with other surfers. According to Dickerson, on most days, you'll be the only person surfing at whatever spot you go to. </p>
<p>With more miles of coastline than the rest of the United States combined, there are no shortage of surf spots to check out. The nature of the Alaskan wild means that the majority of the spots are only accessible by helicopter or boat. Dickerson<a href="http://www.oceanswellventures.com/"> leads tours using his 58-foot fishing boat</a> and also leads <a href="http://www.chugachpowderguides.com/">combination heli-skiing and surfing trips with Chugach Powder Guides.</a> </p>
