The much awaited monsoon rain have arrived in the state, bringing cheers to the farming community. State capital Bengaluru woke up to drizzles on Thursday morning, But commuters faced trouble as waterlogging in parts of the city led to traffic jams.Meanwhile, fishermen have alerted not to venture into the sea. One person was killed in Dakshina Kannada district on Wednesday due to the heavy rain. It is predicted that the Uttara Kannada district will witness thunderstorms with heavy winds. Heavy rain will lash Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Kalaburgi, Raichur, Chikkamagalur, Davanagere, Kodagu, Shivamogga and Vijayanagar districts. Mysuru, Ramnagar and Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar are also expected to witness downpours. Dams and water reservoirs in the state, which were dried due to lack of rains have started filling up. The water level in KRS dam has reached 10.17 tmc. This time last year, the water level stood at 34.06 tmc. The recorded inflow is 1,249 cusecs. Alamatti dam has recorded 19.24 tmc of water against 50.04 tmc feet of water storage last year. Tungabhadra dam with 259 cusecs of water inflow has 3.07 tmc of water following initial rain. In the same time last year, the dam had 50.7 tmc of water. Linganamakki dam has recorded inflow of 9,237 cusecs of water, Kabini reservoir is seeing an inflow of 3,431 cusecs of water following incessant rains. Bhadra dam is seeing 2,397 cusecs of water inflow, Harangi dam is witnessing 1,518 cusecs of inflow and Supa dam is seeing an inflow of 1,736 cusecs of water. Bengaluru, Aug 17 (IANS) Heavy and widespread rains and rising levels of rivers pose a flood threat in north Karnataka, an official said on Monday. "As the southwest monsoon intensified and advanced into the state, heavy rains have been lashing the coastal, central and northern regions for the last 2-3 days, resulting in rising waters in rivers and flood threat to towns and villages in a dozen districts," the State Disaster Management Centre official told IANS here. Incessant rains in the Western Ghats across Maharashtra and Karnataka's northwest region led to overflowing of Krishna river and its tributaries, submerging roads and bridges and disrupting normal life in the inter-state border areas. "The overflowing Krishna and its tributaries Malaprabha, Ghataprabha, and Markendya across the inter-state borders have flooded many villages on their banks and other low-lying areas," said the official. Belagavi, Bagalkot, Vijaypura, Dharwad, Gadag, Raichur, and Kalaburgi districts have been inundated by rainwater, overflowing drains, and canals. Thousands of acres of farmland has been inundated. A landslide near Khanapur in Belagavi district disrupted train services on the Hubli-Londa route as the tracks were blocked by debris. About 2.6-lakh cusecs of water has been released since Sunday night into the Krishna river from the Basavasagar dam in Yadgir district to avoid floods in the state's northern region. With forecast of more heavy rains across the state during this week, the Meteorological office has issued an 'orange alert' to ensure the safety of people living along the rivers and their catchment areas. As strong winds with speeds up to 40-50 kmph are likely to prevail along and off the state's west coast, the Met office warned fishermen against venturing into the Arabian Sea as high waves are expected to rise over the next 2-3 days. "Heavy to very heavy rains or thundershowers will occur at most places across the coastal, south interior, and north interior areas of Karnataka over the next 48-72 hours," the official said. As the monsoon was vigorous over north and active over coastal areas, 23cm rainfall was recorded in Hosanagara, 21cm in Kolluru, 19cm in Siddapura, 17cm in Agumbe, 15cm in Belagavi, and 14cm in Manki over the last 36 hours. --IANS fb/tsb

Bengaluru, As monsoon rains continue to lash Maharashtra and <keyword id="6354780" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karnataka">Karnataka</keyword>, <keyword id="4528506" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-central-water-commission">the Central Water Commission</keyword> (CWC) on Wednesday issued <keyword id="431736" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flood-warning">flood warning</keyword> to areas in <keyword id="9786496" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-krishna-river-basin">the Krishna river basin</keyword> across the state's northwest region. "As heavy rainfall in the catchment areas will lead to more inflow of water into the reservoirs across the Krishna river basin, flood warning has been given to the authorities in the state's border districts to prevent loss of life and damage to property," a CWC official told IANS here. Authorities in Belagavi and Bagalkot districts have been advised to shift people living in villages on the river banks and low-lying areas to higher and safer places to avoid them being flooded, as the river and its tributaries are in spate due to incessant rains over the last week. "As dams in both states across <keyword id="9646208" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-river-basin">the river basin</keyword> are filling up to their capacity, discharge of excess water will flood farmlands and villages in the region," said the official. With the river at Gokak Falls in Belagavi district flowing above the danger mark, hundreds of people in the nearby villages have been shifted to rescue and relief centres at higher places. "As the river is rising after water from the Narayanpur dam in Raichur district was released on Tuesday, flood threat has been issued to the people living in Huvinahedgi village," said the official. With forecast of heavy rains in central and south Maharashtra, release of excess water from its reservoirs will flow into the upper Krishna basin and the Almatti dam in its upstream. Water inflow into the state from Rajapur barrage in Maharashtra at Kallol in Chikkodi increased to 2,18,963 cusecs, with 1,85,875 cusecs from Krishna and 33,038 cusecs from its tributary river Doodhganga. "Residents from flood-prone villages in Chikkodi taluk have been asked to move to higher places along the Krishna banks with their livestock for their safety," said the official. Over 54,600 cusecs of water was discharged from Koyna dam in Maharashtra into Krishna by opening six of its 10 crest gates. Water level in the Hidkal dam increased to 2,173 feet with 34.308 cusecs inflow and 40,245 cusecs outflow. Water level in Malaprabha dam also reached 2,076.90 feet with 17,719 cusecs inflow and 17,164 cusecs outflow. --IANS fb/rt
