New Delhi, Apr 21 () GCMMF, which markets dairy products under Amul brand, expects its turnover to grow 15 per cent this fiscal year from Rs 38,550 crore in 2019-20 despite economic slowdown caused by the nationwide lockdown to control coronavirus outbreak.The household consumption of milk and other dairy products is expected to rise and will compensate any temporary loss of sales caused by closure of hotels, restaurants and cafeterias (HoReCA segment) during the ongoing lockdown period, said R S Sodhi, the managing director of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF)."COVID-19 will not have any impact on demand of the food products. Our sales in value terms during this month are at par with the same month last year. The demand of some products has come down but at the same time sales of many products have risen," Sodhi told  in an interview. Asked about the outlook for this fiscal year, he said: "We expect our turnover to grow by 15 per cent."GCMMF clocked 17 per cent growth in its turnover at Rs 38,550 crore during the 2019-20 fiscal year.On the current situation of its milk operation, Sodhi said, "Gradually things are settling down."Regarding sales, he said the demand for fresh milk has declined by 8 per cent as hotels and restaurants are closed.  "HoReCa segment contributes 12-15 per cent of the total demand. But, fall is less as household consumption of fresh milk and butter milk has increased."Sodhi noted that sales of butter, ghee, paneer, cheese and milk powder have gone up in the range of 20-35 per cent as people are consuming more. However, he pointed out the demand of ice-cream has fallen sharply by 85 per cent, while sales of cream and mozzarella cheese are down by 70 per cent and 50 per cent, respectively. Sodhi said the company has diverted the idle supply chain of ice-cream into distribution of other dairy products."Our milk procurement from farmers has increased by 15 per cent as unorganised players are not buying", he said. The surplus milk is being processed to manufacture skimmed milk powder (SMP), whose price has crashed to Rs 250 per kg from Rs 320 before lockdown, he said. "Our capital is getting blocked because of higher milk procurement. But we need to support farmers during this period," Sodhi said. The GCMMF has not increased or decreased the milk procurement rates, he said, but added that prices have fallen by Rs 7-10 per litres across various states.Sodhi said the fall in procurement rate is more in states like Uttar Pradesh where there are no cooperatives in the dairy business. Amul sells 140 lakh litre milk per day mainly in Gujarat, Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh. Its dairy products are sold across the country. It has milk processing plants in many states.  MJH  ANS SHWSHW

Amul eyes 15 pc growth in turnover this fiscal despite COVID-19 from over Rs 38K cr in FY'20

New Delhi, Apr 23 () Global FMCG major Unilever on Thursday said its growth in India has been hit by both slowing market and the coronavirus-forced lockdown that led to a halt in production and shipping activities for a number of days.The Anglo-Dutch firm has also withdrawn its growth and margin outlook for 2020, citing the impact of the pandemic and subsequent containment measures taken by authorities and a shift in demand patterns of the geographies where it operates.Though the FMCG major has witnessed upswings in sales of hygiene and in-home food products, the crisis has affected particularly its food service and ice cream business, Unilever said in its trading statement for the first quarter ended March 31.Unilever also witnessed a major impact on the businesses in China and India, two of its major markets where restrictions were imposed by the respective governments to contain the spread of COVID-19. "China declined as a result of the downturn in food service, out of home ice cream and retail sales during the lockdown. Growth in India was impacted by both the slowing market and the lockdown implemented at the end of March, which stopped production and shipping for a number of days," Unilever CEO Alan Jope said in a statement.He further said, "Underlying sales growth was zero per cent with 0.2 per cent from volume and negative 0.2 per cent from price. Developed markets grew 2.8 per cent whilst emerging markets declined 1.8 per cent."According to Jope, demand patterns are changing. "As the crisis hits countries around the world, we see upswings in sales of hygiene and income food products, combined with some household stocking, and near cessation of out of home consumption which is particularly affecting our food service and ice cream business," he said.The FMCG major is adapting to new demand patterns and are preparing for lasting changes in consumer behaviour, in each country, as it moves out of the crisis and take steps towards recovery, according to the Unilever CEO."We will continue to adapt throughout this crisis. However, the unknown severity and duration of the pandemic, as well as the containment measures that maybe adopted in each country, mean that we cannot reliably assess the impact across our markets and our business. We are therefore withdrawing our previous growth and margin outlook for 2020," said Jope.While talking about the Indian market, where it operates with subsidiary Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL), he said "seven days of national lockdown at end of Q1" affected the trading, adding that there was supply chain disruption following the lockdown."Lockdown measures in India commenced from mid-March, followed by a strict national lockdown, severely limiting the flow of goods and leading to a decline in South Asia. Indonesia and Vietnam performed strongly although the Philippines declined across divisions as restrictive social measures were put in place," said Unilever.However, it also added that the Indian market had slowed even before the strict lockdown began at the end of March.The company said its tea segment business declined, impacted by India and out of home channel closures. "The strategic review of our tea business is ongoing".Skin care business also took a hit amid lockdown conditions. "Vaseline continued to perform well, with mid-single digit growth, and we launched anti-bacterial hand cream in the UK as well as a new Pro Derma Clinical range in China. The Prestige portfolio was impacted by health and beauty channel closures in many markets. Whilst hair care (segment) grew in the USA, the lock-down impacted the portfolio in China and in India," it said.Deodorants grew in mid-single digit, with strong performances from our RexonaClinical range and Dove deodorants. Its oral care grew, with growth from natural toothpastes and bamboo toothbrushes."Negative pricing was primarily driven by India following price reductions in the previous quarter," he said.Meanwhile, Unilever informed that HUL completed its merger with GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Limited (GSKCH), on April1."The transaction is in line with Unilever's strategy to evolve the Foods &amp; Refreshment portfolio into higher growth segments," said HUL.As per the deal, HUL has also announced to acquire popular health food drink brand Horlicks in a Rs 3,045 crore deal from GSKCH using the option available in the original agreement between HUL and GSK.Besides, other Health Food Drinks (HFD) brands of GSKCH -- Boost, Maltova and Viva -- had come to HUL's portfolio by virtue of the merger, making it a leading player in the segment.According to regulatory filings, HUL would declare its Q4 (Jan-March) earnings results on April 30. As many as 8 million students between classes 4-12 are learning from the BYJU’S app today. This new round will help boost BYJU’S international expansion and acquisition plans.

Besides, Lightspeed Venture Partners invested about $20 million in the firm earlier in 2016 in a secondary transaction which saw Aarin Capital partially selling its stake. This took the total capital infusion in Byju’s last year to at least $160 million. The company, founded by Byju Raveendran in November 2011, has so far raised close to $200 million in equity and debt funding since inception.

The Income-Tax department has once again named <keyword id="91729" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Tax-defaulters">tax defaulters</keyword> in the country on its website. 
 It released the data in this regard late on Wednesday night. Out of the 31 names of tax evaders mentioned, six are from <keyword id="6354766" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Gujarat">Gujarat</keyword> (four individuals and two companies). The individuals are into share trading and angadia business while the two companies named are Dharnendra Industries Ltd and Gujarat Pipes Ltd. These individuals and companies have evaded around Rs 134 crore in taxes since 1980-81. 
 
The I-T department had similarly named to shame defaulters by announcing a list of tax evaders a fortnight ago. In that list, too, 11 out of the 18 top tax evaders were from Gujarat. So out of total 49 names announced till now, 17 are from Gujarat, followed by 14 from Telangana and 11 from Maharashtra. The total amount Gujarat companies and individuals owe the I-T department comes to Rs 401.55 crore. 
 Adopting an aggressive approach, the <keyword id="26362" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Government">government</keyword> has for the first time gone public with names of tax defaulters. 
 
The individuals who have defaulted on taxes are Indravadan Darbar (capital gains/share trading), Devendra Shah (capital gains), Rajnikant M Desai (Angadia production and film distribution) and Girish Prabhu Das Ruparel. According to I-T officials, in spite of several reminders and notices, these individuals had failed to pay taxes. 
 The 'name and shame' method adopted by the I-T dept is being seen as an attempt to recover taxes from defaulters who have been dodging officials for several years. Some of the taxes to be recovered from these defaulters is due since 1980-81. The Central Board of <keyword id="57161" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Direct-Taxes">Direct Taxes</keyword> (CBDT) had asked the I-T department to post on its website the names of the defaulters. 
 
The companies named in the latest list released by the I-T department from Gujarat include ice cream and frozen food manufacturer Dharnendra Industries Ltd and Gujarat Pipes Ltd. According to the list, Gujarat Pipes Ltd exists only on paper without any assets and has to pay Rs 12.44 crore in taxes. 
 
The defaulter companies in the earlier list announced by the department include Somani Cement, Appletech Solutions, Jupiter Business and Hirak Biotech among others. 
 
According to the notice, defaulters are advised to pay tax arrears immediately. The department, in the public notice, has provided the PAN number and the last known address of these defaulters.

Gujaratis sure know their 'dhandha', but they're also among India's top tax defaulters

In a small town called <keyword id="2648" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anand">Anand</keyword> in western India in 1946 farmers were having a difficult time having to deal with the exploitative trade practices followed by the local trade cartel. Refusing to be cowed down by the cartel, farmers of this area went on a milk strike. And they approached the great Indian patriot Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for a solution. His advice was natural, start a cooperative movement. 
 
And they did. 
 
Inspired by India’s freedom struggle, it all began when farmers in a small town near Anand city in Gujarat made milk as a symbol of protest. Tribhuvandas Patel was a local leader who had been imprisoned number of times during India’s struggle for freedom. With the help of his supporters, he found a dairy co-operative in 1946 in Anand. The cooperative movement was a movement against the atrocities of Polson Dairy, a locally-owned dairy in Anand, which procured milk from farmers at very low rates to sell to the Bombay (now Mumbai) government. 
 28 year old Mechanical Engineer from Kerala, <keyword id="168701" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Verghese-Kurien">Verghese Kurien</keyword> arrived in Anand in 1949 as a government employee to manage a dairy. Fed up with his monotonous and unchallenging job he had already made up his mind to leave but upon Tribhuvandas Patel’s request he agreed to stay back for few months to oversee installation of the newly ordered machineries. No one then knew that Dr. Kurien would never leave Anand and make it the milk capital of India. In 1955 <keyword id="26280" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="amul">Amul</keyword> (then short for Anand Milk Union Ltd) was born. Verghese Kurien was in almost every way the architect of Amul. He went from helping farmers repair their machinery to revolutionising the Indian dairy industry by scripting Operation Flood, a cooperative movement that turned India from a net importer of milk into one of the world’s largest producers. Not for nothing was Dr. Verghese Kurien called the Milkman of India. 
 
The first dairy, Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union, which created Amul in 1955, handed over the brand name to Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) in 1973. Thus, in 1973 the GCMMF was established to market milk and milk products manufactured by six district cooperative unions of Gujarat. 
 
 
 Branding played a major role for Amul’s success, the (original) Amul Girl was created by <keyword id="245066" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sylvester-daCunha">Sylvester daCunha</keyword> (daCunha Communications) to counter the Polson dairy girl. Polson’s sexy village belle didn’t stand a chance to the tubby little moppet in the polka-dotted dress and a matching ribbon. Amul ads were cleverly designed to add a tinge of nationalism to an essentially rural revolution. The first Amul Ad campaign came in 1967 in Bombay (now Mumbai). And the response was phenomenal... and continues to be. Amul is also credited with a Guinness world record for longest running ad campaign of the world for its Utterly Butterly girl portraying day-to-day issues since 1967. In 1977, the Amul story was showcased through a Hindi movie titled Manthan directed by Shyam Benegal starring Naseeruddin Shah, Girish Karnad, Smita Patil and Amrish Puri which also won National award for best film. The movie again demonstrated the power of collective might as the movie was financed by a contribution of Rs. 2 by 5 lakh farmers. 
 
And then, Amul became a brandname in its own right. It is said that for Operation Flood, Kurien’s idea of having farmers own the brand went a long way in creating a sense of ownership and, in turn, responsibility for the product’s quality. Since the mid-90s, Amul has been able to take the range outside the security of traditional products, milk powder and butter. Amul diversified to everything from ice-cream, curd to long-life flavoured milk. Brand Amul is now present in over 50 countries. 
 
 
 
Amul has come a long way since its inception. The contribution of Amul in development of rural India as well as economic growth of the nation is legendary.

Sellers of CBD took this to mean that products derived from hemp would also be legal, and an analyst from investment bank Cowen predicted <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cbd-marijuana-hemp-billions-health-industry-wall-street-analysts-2019-2">a $16 billion CBD industry in the US by 2025</a>, up from about $1 billion today.But the FDA said CBD shouldn't be considered a dietary supplement and cannot be added to foods. Facebook will shut down accounts if ads get rejected a certain number of times, meaning the company eventually has to go through an expensive and time-consuming process to set up a new account. But there are ways to lure customers by hinting at the product without actually using the word "CBD" in an ad, Zipperle said. "It's all about how to craft that in a way that works," Zipperle says. "It makes the game way harder than it should be, but it's still a good game to be in because nobody else can figure it out." The key is avoiding a review from an actual human at Facebook. "The number one goal is to avoid a manual review while still getting your products some publicity where you can," Zipperle said.Higdon and Zipperle said they know of startups that will simply put out new ads to replace posts removed by a manual review."It's all about getting new leads, so long as you can keep that train rolling," Zipperle says. For Kentucky-based Ananda Hemp, a CBD oil distributor, it's all about finding loopholes that work, says Alex Capano, the chief science officer of Ananda Hemp. Ananda was recently acquired by Eco Fibre Ltd, an Australian company. "You can say something like, 'come to our pharmacy and talk about Ananda,'" Capano said. Another tactic to avoid the algorithm is using words like "endocannabinoid."Still, Facebook has gotten much savvier at detecting these strategies, she said. "They don't seem to be budging at all on this. No social media companies are." Though a Facebook spokesperson told Business Insider it now allows ads for non-ingestible hemp products - which are now being sold by companies like Kiehl's and Neiman Marcus - Facebook hasn't communicated such a change to advertisers yet, said Solomon, the founder of Poplar.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>Solomon said that, according to her lawyers, there's no specific language in Facebook's <a href="https://www.facebook.com/policies/ads/prohibited_content/">terms of service</a> that bans CBD ads. The terms of service do explicitly ban adult content, illegal substances, and recreational drugs. "Our DNA is to be legitimate," Solomon said in a recent interview. She said Poplar sells products that contain less than 0.3% THC, so "we should be able to share it with our customers."Solomon said she wanted to test how far she could push Facebook in order to figure out a longer-term ad-buying strategy."It's not because we're trying to trick Facebook," says Solomon. "We just wanted to be able to be nimble and learn our lessons quickly."Solomon created duplicate URLs of Poplar's website (be-poplar.com), that didn't have any mention of "CBD" or "cannabis" and instead contained phrases like "wellness."Poplar's Facebook ads would send users to the duplicate pages, which Solomon called "muted-down versions of the actual website," with the same product images and different copy. They would then be redirected to Poplar's actual website (shop-poplar.com) if they clicked anywhere on the duplicate pages."We were able to create those ads and run them without problems," says Solomon. Poplar, however, isn't running them anymore."I get that Facebook is a business, and they have to contain their risks while making money," Solomon said. She speculated that Facebook could start testing allowing more CBD advertising with big companies first. "They might start with the big guys, the Canopy Growths of the world," says Solomon.
