India imposes 50 per cent customs duty on imported fully built up bikes, which makes the American cult bike-maker feel that partnering with Hero has turned out to be a good decision after deciding to exit its manufacturing operations in India three years back. In an interaction with PTI, Zeitz noted that the tie-up with Hero MotoCorp is allowing the Milwaukee-based bike maker to go for "volume opportunities" by introducing a competitive product in the Indian market. "And (there is) a lot of upside with much greater manufacturing capability that Hero brings in and the willingness to invest into the business, to really build us up as a brand. So, I would say it is the right decision," he said. Zeitz noted that the company would like to get its big bikes into the market without having to pay huge customs duty. Last week, Harley and Hero introduced their first co-developed product in India -- Harley-Davidson X 440 -- with price starting at Rs 2.29 lakh. The bike is being produced by Hero MotoCorp at its Neemrana-based plant. Harley-Davidson had announced to discontinue sales and manufacturing operations in India in September 2020. Before that it had an assembly plant at Bawal in Haryana. In October 2020, Hero MotoCorp and Harley-Davidson announced a partnership for the Indian market. Asked if the iconic brand could make a comeback in the Indian market if the tariff issue gets resolved in future, Zeitz said: "That's for the politicians to think. I mean, in theory, why would you have to pay such a tariff for a bike that comes into India versus a bike that goes into the US? When asked if the partners planned to bring in more models in the country, Zeitz said the focus is currently on making the X440 successful in the Indian market. "The more successful it is, the more opportunity we will have," he noted. On Harley utilising India as a manufacturing base for export markets, Zeitz said: "We were manufacturing our 750cc also for the international market, so I am not ruling that out." He further said:"But right now, the focus is really to make sure that the product is successful in India - one important cornerstone is to get X440 to be a success in India, from there we can build and come up with other ideas." When asked if X440 would be shipped to overseas markets, he said: "It is not something we are discussing right now." On the company's plans to introduce Harley Originals, its apparel range in India, Zeitz said: "That's the opportunity down the road I would certainly look into. We have invested a lot into our apparel operation in Milwaukee in America. " The company sees a lot of potential in the segment, he said. Commenting on the evolution of the high-end bike segment in India, Zeitz said the premium mid-segment is certainly a growing segment in the country. He noted that Harley's core segment is 975 plus cc bikes. "But in terms of sales opportunity, that is still a relatively small segment in India due to the price it carries, and obviously amplified by the import duties that make it even more expensive than if you would buy a bike in America, for example," Zeitz said. He noted that eventually the bigger bike segment will also grow in the country but affordability will obviously be an issue if tariffs continue to be as high as they are at the moment. There is a growing middle class who wants to afford more premium and luxury products. "We have seen that happening in China, and I am sure we will see the same thing happening in India," he noted. Elaborating on the company's strategy across global markets, Zeitz said the company is focusing on the core segments that are providing the return on investment. The company has been phasing out, reducing its product complexity by more than a third, he added. "In return, our profitability has gone up dramatically in the last three years as a company. So, I know that this industry is obsessed with unit sales and I am obsessed with profitability," Zeitz said. So, for the company the mandate is to make sure that it focuses on those segments where "Harley is truly Harley" and those are also the most desirable and most profitable segments, he added. Zeitz noted that both China and India were growing very fast. "I look at the two most populous markets in the world as an opportunity and you need to think long term, right. You build your roots now in order to grow with the economy and which is why we are here really," he said. Harley has decided to work with local partners in the markets where it does not have the local know-how, Zeitz added. New Delhi, Feb 29 () Hero MotoCorp Ltd on Saturday said it has inaugurated the first-ever training centre for women at Industrial Training Institute (ITI) at Ambala in Haryana. The Centre of Excellence for Women - at ITI Ambala in Haryana will build key skill-set amongst women. Launched in association with the Skill Development and Industrial Training Department, Government of Haryana and United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the centre aims to enhance employment opportunities for women in the automotive industry. The industrial training will be imparted to women in a fully functional technician training labs set up under this association, a company statement said. Launched under Ek Pahal -- a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of Hero MotoCorp -- the centre will also have a two-wheeler riding training facility for women. The centre is equipped with conventional learning facilities, including a fully automated technician training labs with pneumatic tools and precision equipment, it said. "The quantum of reduction ranges from Rs 400 to Rs 1,800 on mass-selling models," the company said in a statement. The actual benefit varies from state to state, depending on the pre- and post-GST rates, it added. Some of the premium segment models would see a reduction of up to Rs 4,000 in certain markets, Hero <keyword id="738064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="MotoCorp">MotoCorp</keyword> said. The mobile ambulances will be useful for reaching out to patients in rural and remote areas and comfortably moving them to the nearest hospitals, the company said in a statement. The ambulances have been custom-built as an accessory to be fitted on Hero MotoCorp motorcycles, with an engine capacity of 150cc and above, it added. The ambulance accessories include sleeping arrangement with essential medical equipment such as a first-aid kit, oxygen cylinder, fire extinguisher and siren, Hero MotoCorp said. These mobile ambulances will be handed over to authorities in multiple regions across the country, it added. The Hero Group has already committed a corpus of Rs 100 crore as aid for the ongoing Covid-19 relief-efforts in India. Half of this sum, or Rs 50 crore, is being contributed to the PM CARES Fund and the remaining Rs 50 crore is being spent in other relief efforts. The BML Munjal University - run by the Hero Group at Dharuhera in Haryana - has offered its 2,000-bed hostel for use as isolation and treatment ward by the local health department. Hero MotoCorp said it is also distributing more than 15,000 meals to daily wage-workers, stranded laborers and homeless families in several areas of Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat every day. Hero MotoCorp to provide 60 custom-built mobile ambulances for Covid-19 patients

Hero MotoCorp’s four plants in Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand have been impacted due to the ongoing Jats reservation demand. 
 
"Dispatches from all our plants - at Gurgaon and Dharuhera (Haryana), Neemrana (Rajasthan) and Haridwar (Uttarakhand) - have been affected due to the ongoing blockade of the national highways and other roads," said a Hero MotoCorp spokesperson. 
 
Production output has also been partially impacted today at the plants due to the ongoing impasse, the spokesperson added. 
 
As of last quarter, the company had an installed capacity to produce 81 lakh units per annum from the four production facilities. 
 
Sources from rival Honda Motorcycle &amp; Scooter India (HMSI) said there was no impact on production at the company's Manesar facility. 
 
The plant has a capacity to roll out 16 lakh units annually.

Hero MotoCorp’s Haryana plants face the brunt of Jat reservation stir

Since the company couldn’t dispatch vehicles from its Gurgaon and Dharuhera plants, the shares of India's two-wheeler market leader fell by over 1% down by end of trade today, as per a PTI report. 
 At the <keyword id="43628" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bombay-stock-exchange">Bombay Stock Exchange</keyword> (<keyword id="35140" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE">BSE</keyword>), the shares of this Delhi-headquartered company went down by 1.15% to settle at Rs 2,977.10. As per the company’s filing to the BSE, "The transporters' strike today has impacted the dispatches from our plants in Gurgaon and Dharuhera. We could despatch only half of our average daily dispatches from these two plants today." 
 On the other hand, it lost 1.24% to Rs 2,977 at the <keyword id="53581" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NATIONAL-STOCK-EXCHANGE">National Stock Exchange</keyword> (NSE). 
 
The daily average dispatch Hero is around 12,000 units in the off-season around this time of the year from these two plants. 
 
In order to further minimise the impact of strike on its dispatches, Hero MotoCorp said it is trying to make alternative arrangements.

Amid Transporters' Strike In Haryana, Hero MotoCorp’s Shares Fall By 1%

NEW DELHI: <keyword id="46362" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honda-Motors">Honda Motors</keyword>, which is swearing by scooters in India, is setting up the world’s largest scooter plant in Gujarat to roll out 12 lakh units annually and achieve leadership position in the Indian two-wheeler market, especially with a growing number of customers shifting to this unisex multi-utility mode that has caught the fancy of many and outpaced almost every other segment. 
 Scooter sales have jumped by 29% in the ongoing fiscal, and now form 27% of the total two-wheeler market from just 8% a decade back. The ever-rising demand for scooters that has far outstripped supply has prompted <keyword id="20630" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honda">Honda</keyword> to set up its first dedicated scooter plant in Ahmedabad. “Even as we have more than doubled our scooter capacity in India, we have not been able to match up with the demand. 
 
After 13 years of its launch, Activa continues to be on ‘waiting’ even as competition has multiplied ten times,” said YS Guleria, Honda VP for marketing and sales in India. Honda had fired the imagination of scooter lovers with its Activa — launched way back in 2001. 
 
“Even though we raised our production with three new scooters, demand still outstrips our estimates. While scooter production has trebled in the past decade, we still have a backlog of 60,000 scooters that should multiply in the festive months ahead,” Guleria added. Honda would spend Rs 1,100 crore on the new plant in Ahmedabad, and expand its range with a few more offerings. 
 
The company, which leads the scooter market with a 53% share in the domestic market, would have two assembly lines for scooters, which would create 3,000 more jobs. The fourth plant would enhance its cumulative production capacity in India to 58 lakh units by 2015-16, including 16 lakh from its first plant in Haryana, 12 lakh from the one in Rajasthan, and 18 lakh from the Karnataka plant. 
 
The sales from its Indian subsidiary have already climbed to the second spot for Honda’s two-wheeler business worldwide, and it believes that the fourth plant would help India become its top global market. Honda’s decision for a dedicated scooter plant is backed by an overwhelming response to its five scooter brands which have been runaway successes in India.

They have gained from a surge in sales in the first quarter that has helped the segment post record high sales of 1.01 million units in the April-June ended period. Scooters grew 23% to sell 3.60 million units in the fiscal ended March. 
 
Analystssaid that the new generation automatic scooters, that are unisex in nature and are fuel efficient, have helped them grow manifold over the more traditional roughand-tough bikes. “Going by the shift, they (scooters) are expected to corner a third of the market,” said Deepesh Rathore, director at EMMAAA , a Delhibased consultancy firm.

New Delhi, Jan 8 () Production at Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India's (HMSI) Manesar plant in Haryana and factories of various auto component manufacturers in Manesar-Bawal industrial belt was hit on Wednesday by the day-long strike called by 10 major trade unions against the Centre's "anti-people" policies.
 The strike, however, had no impact on production of auto majors Maruti Suzuki India, Hero MotoCorp and Honda Cars India at their plants in various parts of the country. 
 "Workers in all three shifts at the Manesar plant are not working today in support of the trade union strike," HMSI Employee Union President Suresh Gaur told .
 He said HMSI Manesar plant workers alongwith counterparts from factories of auto component makers Shivam Autotech, Emkay Automobile Industries, Munjal Showa, Napino Auto &amp; Electronics and Talbros, among others have joined in for a day-long protest.
 "Workers at factories in the Manesar-Bawal industrial are supporting the strike and productions have been affected," Gaur claimed.
 When contacted, HMSI officials declined to comment. 
 Workers and officials at Maruti Suzuki, Hero MotoCorp, Honda Cars India confirmed that production was on normally at their respective plants and the strike has had no impact.
 10 central trade unions have claimed around 25 crore people will participate in the nationwide strike called to protest against the union government's labour reforms, FDI, disinvestment, corporatisation and privatisation policies. 
 They are pressing for a 12-point charter of demands of the working class relating to minimum wage and social security, among others.
 The demands also include a minimum pension of Rs 6,000 for everyone, minimum support price (MSP) for farmers, adequate supply of ration to people, AITUC General Secretary Amarjeet Kaur said, adding that the demands concern common man's issues besides worker-centric areas. RKL RVK
