New Delhi, Feb 21 () India's organic food market is growing at 17 per cent annually and has the potential to grow at a faster pace on rising demand for health and wellness food products across the world, Union Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal said on Friday.Badal and Minister for Women and Child Development (WCD) Smriti Irani jointly inaugurated an organic food festival for women entrepreneurs at Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium here. The festival with a theme ''Unleasing India's Organic Market Potential'' has been organised by both the ministries with CII as the industry partner.More than 180 women entrepreneurs, self-help groups (SHGs) and co-operatives are taking part in this three-day exhibition organised in the national capital during February 21-23.Addressing the event, Badal said the two ministries have come together to give women entrepreneurs in the organic sector "wings to fly and reach the sky". She said this festival would be organised six times a year across India, and the plan is to make it an international exhibition in the near future. She said the entire world is looking towards organic and wellness food, which is required for both physical and mental health."In organic and health foods, India is a power house," Badal said, adding that there are many parts of India which are naturally organic such as Sikkim, hilly states and tribal belts.This organic festival provides a platform to women entrepreneurs to connect with consumers as well as retailers, Badal said."The organic sector in India is growing by almost 17 per cent every year... In times to come, the trend is going to grow much faster," the minister said.Earlier this month, Badal had said the organic food market will touch Rs 75,000 crore in the next five years. Badal said food processing, value addition and organic food would be instrumental in the government's target to double farmers' income."Under the able leadership of Minister of Food Processing, we celebrate the entrepreneurial potential of over 180 women in this segment of organic food under the aegis of this festival," said Irani, who is also the Textile Minister.The government has ensured that women entrepreneurs get Mudra loans to start their venture, Irani said.She said foreign direct investment (FDI) in the food processing sector has increased substantially under the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.The government is providing sustainable environment not only to farmers but also to entrepreneurs by engaging them with latest technology in food processing, the WCD minister said.Irani stressed on providing access to latest food processing technology available globally to entrepreneurs, especially women.Apart from women entrepreneurs, the minister suggested that Divyang citizens should be part of this organic food festival from next year. Tribal produce and nutritious food supported by Poshan Abhiyan should also be included. Food Processing Secretary Pushpa Subrahmanyam highlighted that India is ranked number one in organic producers and ninth in area under cultivation for organic products.The country produced around 1.7 million tonnes of certified organic products in 2017-18. It exported organic products worth USD 515 million in the same year.To boost organic products and women entrepreneurship, the two ministries had signed a memorandum of understanding last year to help them get connect with government's financial schemes.The overall effort is targeted towards strengthening organic branding for India by enhancing direct linkage of local producers with buyers as well as boosting processing potential of organic output.During the festival, training programmes will be organised for women entrepreneurs in the area of packaging, storage, marketing, innovations on renewable energy, food safety regulations and organic certifications. Badal who was 10th to take oath during the swearing in ceremony held today, will once again hold the Food Processing ministry. In the first term of the Modi government too, Badal held the position of Union Cabinet minister of Food Processing. In the Lok Sabha elections 2019, Harsimrat Kaur Badal won the seat from Bathinda by defeating Amrinder Singh Raja Warring of Congress by over 21,000 votes. While campaigning for the elections, Badal took to the stage and brought out the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, operation Bluestar to campaign against the Congress. Badal, a member of Shiromani Akali Dal, is a Member of Parliament from Bathinda, Punjab and comes from the political legacy Badal family of the state. Her husband Sukhbir Singh Badal, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal, was the deputy Chief Minister of Punjab. Her father-in-law Parkash Singh Badal was a four-time Chief Minister of Punjab. She is appreciated for her initiative – Nanhi Chhaan – in 2008 to fight female infanticide and empower women.

Harsimrat Kaur Badal gets a second-term as Food Processing Minister

Days after reports like Maggi noodle found safe surfaced, food processing minister <keyword id="238193" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harsimrat-Kaur-Badal">Harsimrat Kaur Badal</keyword> has said that the "inspector raj" has prompted fear among domestic packaged food companies. The minister alleged that this is cutting out overseas businesses, killing innovation and also threatening the government's Make-in-India initiative. 
 In an interview, Badal told Economic Times that in India, the sector is growing faster than agriculture and manufacturing. She also talked about the severe constraints <keyword id="109212" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Food-Safety">Food Safety</keyword> and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is facing after striking the controversy on <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword>’s Maggi noodle. 
 The minister, first in <keyword id="6387077" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi-government">Narendra Modi government</keyword> who critically commented on the Maggi episode is now demanding ‘registration raj’ instead of ‘inspector raj’. Badal has said, “India could attract overseas investment worth billions of dollars, helping both farmers and consumers if companies get the right environment and are allowed to self-certify compliance.” 
 
She also mentioned French processed vegetables company Bonduelle and US-based Amy's Kitchen among who are keen to invest in India. These companies are eying India to develop as their regional hubs. 
 
"In the current environment, no one can say how long it will take to get approval, so these projects were not coming to India. Now we see this inspector raj. Companies are petrified of their reputation. Further, industry associations also don't want to come to forefront as they feel they will be targeted," she further added. 
 
Concerns like manufacturers finding it tricky to deal with FSSAI because of the involvement of red tape were also raised. She also demanded transparent and rational norms that should be effectively implemented with exemplary punishment for defaulters. 
 
Talking about the FSSAI she said, "There were plenty of complaints from across the country. With the kind of innovations, now there are hundreds of types of cakes, biscuits, bread, juices, lassi. Is it possible in a country like ours where every second new things are being innovated, to get product-to-product approval? It is not humanly possible. All of them come to FSSAI for approval and there are six scientists working on testing. It is not humanly possible."

India’s <keyword id="138026" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="food-processing-minister">Food Processing Minister</keyword> <keyword id="238193" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Harsimrat-Kaur-Badal">Harsimrat Kaur Badal</keyword> seems to be on a mission to encourage and promote healthy and nutritious products. Recently, she met PepsiCo Chairman and CEO <keyword id="6421975" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indra-Nooyi">Indra Nooyi</keyword> to discuss the role the food beverages company could play in this regard. 
 
She disclosed to a leading news agency that PepsiCo is willing to reduce sugar content in its soft drinks. “In soft drinks, they (PepsiCo) are looking at how to bring down the sugar content (but) that same cold drink has the taste but healthy contents in it," says minister. 
 
According to her, the company is “open to play its role” in boosting the nutritional value of mid-day meals provided by the government. "I have suggested if they could come up for midday meal scheme in rural areas as malnutrition is big issue... some of these packed meals which could enhance the nutrition value and which provide for iron deficiency they were interested in that they said they would look into that," Badal said. 
 
"I have suggested there is huge potential for providing healthy meals for children in their tiffins and something which is healthy and could be done quickly in the morning," she added. 
 
However, Nooyi declined to comment on the issue.

Sugar Content, Says Food Minister

New Delhi, May 4 () Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Monday interacted with promoters of cold chain projects in Maharashtra and discussed the impact on their businesses due to the coronavirus-forced lockdown. In the deliberation held through video conferencing, among the issues discussed were: piling of stocks of frozen vegetables and dairy products because of reduced demand in the domestic market and difficulty in exports. The virtual interaction was attended by 38 promoters of the completed 'Integrated Cold Chain Projects' supported by the Ministry of Food Processing in Maharashtra. Minister of State for Food Processing Rameshwar Teli was also present in the meeting, an official statement said. Badal discussed with them the adverse impact of lockdown on operations, raw material availability and its high cost, labour and logistics issues, and high inventory costs.The issue of liquidity crunch also featured in the deliberation. The cold chain promoters talked about the challenges being faced in operations during the lockdown period, it said. Badal emphasised on the need to leverage the collective strength of the 'Integrated Cold Chain' network to cope with the COVID-19 crisis that has posed a serious challenge to the existing supply chain of food products."They discussed issues such as piling stocks of frozen vegetables and processed dairy products not finding their traditional markets like restaurants, banquets, hotels etc amidst the lockdown and further, the difficulty in exporting these products," the statement said. Harsimrat Badal takes stock of lockdown's impact on cold chain projects in Maharashtra

New Delhi, Jan 13 () The Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology (IIFPT) on Monday signed a pact with eight other institutes located in Punjab and Haryana for facilitating a collaborative research, skill development, and student's in-plant training.
 The Bathinda-based IIFPT inked the memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the presence of Union Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal, an official statement said.
 The eight institutes/universities include Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana; Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University (MRSPTU), Bathinda; Central Institute of Post-Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana; National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Karnal; Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research (IIWBR), Karnal; Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology (SLIET), Sangrur; National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI), Mohali and Guru Nanak College, Budhlada, it added.
 Speaking on the occasion, the minister said everyone should work in collaboration with each other to increase the income of small farmers and such kind of MoU will open new opportunities for the benefit of farmers as there is great potential in the food processing sector.
 The MoU is intended to facilitate a collaborative programme of research, skill development, consultancy, institutional development, information dissemination and student's in-plant training. The linkage hereby formed will further strengthen the mutual bond and relationship between the partners, she added. LUX HRS

New Delhi, May 6 () Promoters of cold chain projects on Wednesday demanded that the government should provide subsidy on power tariff as they are facing cash crunch because of the nationwide lockdown. The demand was made by cold chain promoters during an interaction via video conferencing with Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal. The minister emphasised the importance of food processing enterprises, especially the Integrated Cold Chain Network, in the present uncertain and evolving circumstances in view of the COVID pandemic, an official statement said. This network saves the farmers from uncertain circumstances and also facilitates stabilization of market prices, it added. The food processing industry has the potential to absorb the excess farm produce, thereby benefiting the farmers and at the same time, convert the harvest into a value added processed product that can meet the domestic as well as the global demand, the statement said. Minister of State for Food Processing Rameswar Teli was also present at the video conferencing with the promoters of completed integrated cold chain projects supported by the Union Food Processing Ministry in Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan. The promoters of 38 cold chain projects across five states participated in the deliberation and shared their experience gained and problems faced in completing the projects, the official statement said. Further, the promoters also shared hardships and problems faced in running the cold chain projects during the lockdown period. They expressed concerns about the decision of the local government authorities to limit the hours of operations of mandis to avoid overcrowding, saying this has affected procurement operations. The issue of hike in freight cost by 30 per cent and its impact on exports was raised by them. Citing the low domestic demand amidst the pandemic, the industry representatives from the cold chain sector unanimously pitched for subsidy in the power tariffs. "They urged that a cold store needs to function 24/7 and the plant compressors cannot be shut at any point of time," the statement said. MJH MKJ

Lockdown: Cold chain operators seek subsidy on power tariff

New Delhi, Nov 25 () An inter-ministerial approval committee, headed by Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal, on Monday cleared projects worth Rs 271 crore to boost processing and preservation capacities.
 The projects were sanctioned under the Creation/Expansion of Food Processing &amp; Preservation Capacities (CEFPPC) scheme, an official statement said.
 During the meeting, detailed presentations were made by the respective programme management agencies (PMAs) on the proposals and subsequent clarifications submitted by the applicant.
 The panel examined if the applicants have complied with the basic eligibility criterion, total project cost, eligible project cost and means of finance.
 "The emphasis is to create direct employment for the youth as well as contribute towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi's goal to double farmers' income by 2022," Badal said.
 While clearing the new projects worth Rs 270 crore, Badal has given focus on rural areas and generating direct employment.
 "The projects would create direct employment of about 9,000 and would emphasise on linking agriculture and marketing with modern food processing technologies," the statement said.
 The ministry is also implementing the PM Krishi Sampada Yojana with a total outlay of Rs 6,000 crore, wherein capital subsidy in the form of grants-in-aid ranging from 35 per cent to 75 per cent of the eligible project cost is being provided to investors. This is being done to undertake infrastructure and logistic projects besides setting up of food processing units in the country. MJH HRS

New Delhi, Feb 16 () Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Sunday inaugurated India Pavilion at GulFood 2020, Dubai, and held discussions with food companies over the potential of business opportunities in India.At the event, a proposal was also mooted to explore possibility of setting up a fund to provide marketing support to launch Indian products in the Gulf nation's super markets. "The FPI Minister held one-on-one meetings with the companies involved in Food business in the UAE. Based on the discussions it was proposed to explore the possibility of setting up a fund for providing marketing support to launch Indian products in the UAE super markets," an official statement said.The Minister for Food Processing Industries held several meetings in Dubai, where she inaugurated the India Pavilion being held from February 16-20.During the discussions with the India UAE Food security corridor project representative, Badal proposed that existing Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MOFPI) supported infra may be utilised to give a head-start to the project.She also emphasised on fast-tracking the project and mentioned that all necessary support will be provided by the ministry through Invest India.The minister took a tour of the fair and interacted with the Indian exhibitors and urged them to make use of the platform of GulFood 2020 for facilitating tie-ups between foreign investors and accelerate the pace of export of food products from India to the western market.While interacting with the exhibitors, she discussed the potential of business opportunities available to them in India, UAE and other countries.Badal informed that the food processing sector in India being a sunrise sector is poised for exponential growth and has emerged as a high growth sector due to its immense potential for value addition, ability to control inflation and ensure remunerative prices to farmers.
