Mansa, Jun 19 () Union Food Processing and Industries minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Friday said "new India" would not let China commit any aggression against it and the army was capable of dealing with any threat. Harsimrat paid homage to Sepoy Gurtej Singh, one of the 20 Indian soldiers who lost their lives during violent clash with Chinese troops in Galwan valley in Ladakh, at Birewala Dogran village in Punjab's Mansa by offering floral tributes, the minister's office said in a statement. She said the sacrifice of the martyrs would not be allowed to go waste. "The country's army was capable of dealing with any threat head-on and would give a resounding reply to the adversary. New India would not let China commit any aggression against it," she said. People from the martyr's village requested the minister to establish a college in the area. She assured the villagers that she would pursue the matter and asked the village panchayat to approve a resolution and forward it to her. The minister also assured the bereaved family that she will make sure that they get every facility they were entitled to from the Centre. JTR TDS TDS

New Delhi, May 4 () Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Monday interacted with promoters of cold chain projects in Maharashtra and discussed the impact on their businesses due to the coronavirus-forced lockdown. In the deliberation held through video conferencing, among the issues discussed were: piling of stocks of frozen vegetables and dairy products because of reduced demand in the domestic market and difficulty in exports. The virtual interaction was attended by 38 promoters of the completed 'Integrated Cold Chain Projects' supported by the Ministry of Food Processing in Maharashtra. Minister of State for Food Processing Rameshwar Teli was also present in the meeting, an official statement said. Badal discussed with them the adverse impact of lockdown on operations, raw material availability and its high cost, labour and logistics issues, and high inventory costs.The issue of liquidity crunch also featured in the deliberation. The cold chain promoters talked about the challenges being faced in operations during the lockdown period, it said. Badal emphasised on the need to leverage the collective strength of the 'Integrated Cold Chain' network to cope with the COVID-19 crisis that has posed a serious challenge to the existing supply chain of food products."They discussed issues such as piling stocks of frozen vegetables and processed dairy products not finding their traditional markets like restaurants, banquets, hotels etc amidst the lockdown and further, the difficulty in exporting these products," the statement said. Chandigarh, Apr 18 () Days after Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh raised the issue of a special package and release of GST arrears with the Centre, Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Saturday claimed that the central government had given funds and foodgrains to the state to combat COVID-19. Sharing details of the funds sent by the Centre to the Punjab government in a series of tweets, the Bathinda MP asked Singh why no relief was being given to the needy. "Punjab received funds &amp; grains to deal with #COVID_19 crisis. I am sending you details @capt_amarinder. People want to know where are the things that came from Centre? Why no relief being given to them? Better you first distribute relief sent to u before making out a case for more. "As far as funds received by Punjab after March 20 when #Coronavirus broke out, please note the state received Rs 3,445 cr including Rs 2,366 cr on account of GST compensation &amp; arrears, Rs 638 cr as RDG, Rs 247 cr for Disaster Mgt, Rs 72 cr for MNREGA &amp; Rs 72 cr under NHM," she tweeted. The Union minister said the Centre had also sent wheat and pulses to the state government. "This isn't all CM Sahib. Centre has also sent 15 kg wheat &amp; 3 kg pulses for 1.4 cr people which is half of state's population. It's still lying in Pb godowns &amp; not reached a single household. Shouldn't you prioritise work &amp; ensure this relief reaches the needy at the earliest," Harsimrat said in another tweet. Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had been seeking the special package and release of pending Goods and Services Tax (GST) arrears of Rs 4,400 crore from the Centre. The special package includes Rs 729 crore for hospital upgradation and Rs 550 crore for setting up an institute for advanced virology. At 89, he is the country’s oldest serving Chief Minister. And he is showing no signs of giving up any time soon. Punjab Chief Minister <keyword id="55130" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Parkash-Singh-Badal">Parkash Singh Badal</keyword> is now in full election mode and is telling the electorate that their votes will give him another 10 years of life. 
 
“Your vote is important. If you give me another chance to serve you, it will add 10 years to my life,” Badal, who is actively reaching out to people across Punjab through his ‘Sangat Darshan’ programmes across rural and urban areas, has been telling the people in recent weeks. 
 Punjab’s ruling <keyword id="6357030" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shiromani-Akali-Dal">Shiromani Akali Dal</keyword>, of which he is the chief patron, is seeking a straight third term in office with Badal being at the helm of affairs. 
 As he turns 89 on December 8, Badal certainly does not fit Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>’s idea that “politicians should retire at the age of 75”. But for Badal, who has been a long-time ally for the <keyword id="58687" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharatiya-Janata-Party">Bharatiya Janata Party</keyword> (BJP), Modi certainly will make an exception. 
 As the five-time Punjab Chief Minister seeks a sixth term in office, and faces a tough challenge from the Congress and the new entrant on Punjab’s political scene — the <keyword id="6354944" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aam-Aadmi-Party">Aam Aadmi Party</keyword> (AAP) — Badal is certainly not showing any signs of getting tired or even retiring any time soon. 
 His political opponent and former Chief Minister, Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh, disputes his age. Amarinder claims that Badal is already actually 94. (He made the claim last week in the presence of Badal’s son <keyword id="6375801" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sukhbir-Badal">Sukhbir Badal</keyword> at an event in New Delhi.) 
 
“Badal saab”, as he is referred to by most people around him, starts his day early and actively goes through his daily routine of meetings with officers, ministers, delegations and others who come to meet him. 
 
Badal’s “Sangat Darshan” (meeting with the people) programme takes him to several villages and towns across Punjab every week. The programme is basically to take the government to the people’s doorsteps and hundreds throng every venue where he stops and listens to problems and suggestions the people want to share with him. 
 
Those close to him say “Badal saab” is always active and alert despite his age. He has been in public life for nearly 70 years now. 
 
“He is quite alert and his memory is far better than most of the much younger people who are around him. He has a mass appeal which no one can match,” an aide told IANS. 
 
Hailing from a simple agricultural background, Badal forayed into politics by getting elected as a sarpanch (village headman) in 1947, the year the country won its Independence. He was first elected to the Punjab assembly in 1957 on a Congress party ticket. After leaving the Congress soon after, Badal ended up opposing the Congress policies and governments — a thing he continues to do even now. 
 Well-known for his witty one-liners and memory of people and events, Badal, who was conferred the <keyword id="15575" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Padma-Vibhushan">Padma Vibhushan</keyword> — the country’s second-highest civilian honour — in 2015 by the Modi government, has always remained centre-stage in Punjab’s politics. 
 
Born December 8, 1927, at Abul Khurana village near Malout in southwest Punjab, he has been Chief Minister five times — 1970-71, 1977-1980, 1997-2002, 2007-2012 and 2012 onwards. He has been in power in Punjab continuously since March 2007. He was briefly a Union minister in 1977 in the Morarji Desai government. 
 
Badal’s wife, Surinder Kaur, died in 2011 of cancer. The couple had two children — son Sukhbir and daughter Preneet. 
 Badal’s close family members are all in the government. Sukhbir Singh Badal, the Akali Dal President and Punjab Deputy Chief Minister, now dominates both party and government affairs. Badal’s daughter-in-law <keyword id="301801" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harsimrat-Badal">Harsimrat Badal</keyword> is the Union Minister for Food Processing. His son-in-law Adaish Pratap Singh Kairon is a cabinet minister in his government as is Harsimrat’s younger brother, Bikram Singh Majithia.

Chandigarh, Apr 23 () Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal on Thursday asserted that except a meagre sum of Rs 71 crore, the BJP-led government has not given the state a single penny to fight COVID-19 pandemic.Badal made the assertion, seeking to debunk sought Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal's claims of funds given by the Centre to Punjab.Badal, an estranged cousin of Shiromani Akali Dal Chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, asked Harsimrat Kaur not to "play petty politics" over the COVID-19 crisis and dared her to get Punjab's GST arrears worth Rs 4,400 crore released from the Centre.Badal attacked Kaur after she earlier claimed that the government of India had given funds and foodgrain to the Punjab government to combat COVID-19 and asked Chief Minister Amarinder Singh why no relief was being given to the needy people."A sum of Rs 71 crore has been given to Punjab under the National Health Mission to fight coronavirus. It comes even less than Rs three crore per district. Besides that, we have not got a single penny from the government of India in the fight against COVID-19," Badal said in a video message posted on his Facebook."If they are trying to show doing favour with a sum of Rs 71 crore, it is s petty politics and narrow mindset," said Badal, targeting the Union minister who is the wife of SAD chief Sukhbir Badal.He said a sum of Rs 832 crore given by the Centre, as had been claimed by Harsimrat Kaur, was Punjab's right.Badal said this sum was Punjab's share in devolution of central taxes. Taking on Harsimrat for her claims of giving Rs 2,300 crore to Punjab, Manpreet Badal said it was the state's arrears pending for the last three years.Taking a swipe at Harsimrat, the state finance minister told the Union Food Processing Minister Kaur, "If anybody listens to you in the central Cabinet, then you should get Rs 4,400 crore GST compensation arrears released." Punjab has been demanding the release of the Goods and Services Tax arrears amounting to Rs 4,400 crore from the Centre.
