The prize, established in 2009 by the charity <keyword id="22202138" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="English-PEN" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="English PEN" meta.hostid="83" meta.entityid="English PEN">English PEN</keyword>, defends <keyword id="20100163" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="freedom-of-expression" source="keywords">freedom of expression</keyword> and celebrates <keyword id="19987262" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="literature" source="keywords">literature</keyword> in memory of Nobel-Laureate playwright <keyword id="22202139" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harold-Pinter" source="keywords">Harold Pinter</keyword>. Roy expressed her delight at being named this year's winner amid an "incomprehensible turn" the world is taking. "I am delighted to accept the PEN Pinter prize. I wish Harold Pinter were with us today to write about the almost incomprehensible turn the world is taking. Since he isn't, some of us must do our utmost to try to fill his shoes," said 62-year-old Roy. The renowned author, who won the <keyword id="20316916" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Booker-Prize" source="keywords">Booker Prize</keyword> for her debut novel 'The God of Small Things', was chosen by this year's judges - Chair of English PEN Ruth Borthwick; actor and activist Khalid Abdalla; and writer and musician Roger Robinson. She will receive the award at a ceremony co-hosted by the British Library on October 10, where she will also deliver an address. "Roy tells urgent stories of injustice with wit and beauty. While India remains an important focus, she is truly an internationalist thinker, and her powerful voice is not to be silenced," said Borthwick. "Arundhati Roy is a luminous voice of freedom and justice whose words have come with fierce clarity and determination for almost 30 years now," said Abdalla. "This year, as the world faces the deep histories that have created this moment in Gaza, our need for writers who are 'unflinching and unswerving' has been immense. In honoring Arundhati Roy this year, we are celebrating both the dignity of her body of work and the timeliness of her words, that arrive with the depth of her craft exactly when we need them most," he said. "Arundhati Roy was the unanimous choice for this prestigious award, a testament to her unparalleled contribution to literature. Her vast body of work, encompassing both fiction and non-fiction, has not only captivated readers worldwide but also consistently focused on themes of <keyword id="19934927" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="social-justice" source="keywords">social justice</keyword>, " added Robinson. The judges noted Roy's incisive commentary on issues ranging from environmental degradation to human rights abuses demonstrates her commitment to advocating for the marginalized and challenging the status quo. "Her unique voice and unwavering dedication to these causes make her a deserving recipient of this honour," they said. The prize will be shared with a "Writer of Courage" - one who is active in defence of freedom of expression, often at great risk to their own safety and liberty. The co-winner will be selected and announced by Arundhati Roy from a shortlist of cases supported by English PEN. The prize is awarded annually to a writer of outstanding literary merit resident in the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland or the Commonwealth who, in the words of Harold Pinter's Nobel Prize in Literature speech, casts an "unflinching, unswerving" gaze upon the world and shows a "fierce intellectual determination... to define the real truth of our lives and our societies".

At a time when sense of humour in India is a debatable, questionable and arguable topic, comic legend <keyword id="5630" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jerry-Seinfeld">Jerry Seinfeld</keyword> decides to visit India. He will be performing in, Mumbai on March 14 and 15 at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium in Worli. This is a double treat for his <keyword id="207039" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="legendary-comedian">legendary comedian</keyword>’s fans since this is the first time ever he would be performing in India, and the whole of Asia, so to say. 
 
The tickets are priced merely at Rs 7,500 per head. And no, we aren’t kidding, okay! 
 People who grew up watching Jerry <keyword id="5631" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Seinfeld">Seinfeld</keyword> have been watching re-runs since the longest time now. Because, the world famous comedian stopped his series nearly 17 years ago. So, in just about a year, a kid who would be born when he stopped airing his episodes, will get to vote if elections are held anytime next year. It has really been THAT long since he regaled people. His legion, however, hasn’t forgotten him yet. 
 
The Emmy and Golden Globe winning comedian was super good at playing a semi-fictional version of self in one of the most popular sitcoms ever in the history of television. In Mumbai, he will be offering a double treat to his fans, by staging two shows! 
 But really, Seinfeld would have been in India much earlier if the original storyline which was based on <keyword id="84280" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harold-Pinter">Harold Pinter</keyword>’s play of the same name ‘The Betrayal’. There were scenes which were to be shot in India, but were deleted for some reason. 
 
Now, all this is not really important when we think of the time when Seinfeld has decided to perform in India. Who will the joke be on? The recent AIB Roast has proved even humour can be double sided, and there’s not much left to laugh in the country. Actors don’t agree with the tone and tenor, and then there are stand up comedians who would insist their script is sacred over people’s ability to laugh or to get offended, whichever happens first. 
 
The Brooklyn-born co-creator of Seinfeld series insists India has always fascinated him. The culture amazes him. And he says he is very excited to be here, and ‘make fun in person’. Till this point, all is well with the plot. But then, things begin to get a little knotty here for two reasons. One, like we already mentioned, the issue of ‘sense of humour’ of people in general especially post the AIB Roast phase. Now, added complication comes through in another form. Post-Barack Obama visit, India has not been too very excited to roll out a red carpet to people who come here on invitation/or on their own and then go back to make some really ‘hurtful’ observations about the country. If monolithic observations are all that you can make, India is the best country to avoid since it isn’t an easy nut to crack on one visit. So, you see, the plot is getting all complicated with a diplomatic issue taking the centre stage. Nah, we were simply kidding, of course! 
 
But, really at a time when humour has turned into a premium, one anticipation would be about how the people would respond since Seinfeld is bound to crack some clever one liners involving politicians and their ways. Hopefully, his script writer has done enough homework on India’s cultural challenges and hasn’t written anything that would sound insensitive or invoke angry reactions from people. 
 
Because, given the city of Mumbai, which has high resilience towards life the city is also known for violent reactions to something that doesn’t go down too well with the given temperament of the people and the city. And then, there is also a hope that city will laugh with Seinfeld too! 
In a way, it would also be a relief that apart from diplomatic visits and disappointments, Seinfeld is in India to regale people. May be, just maybe, he will learn to appreciate a thing or two about Indian way of life without getting too shallow about it. Because when you look at the west, a joke is good way of bonding; but a ridicule can snap bridges forever.

In an outpouring on Thursday, leading thinkers, writers, and fans reacted to an essay published in The New York Times by neurologist and bestselling author Oliver Sacks.Sacks, 81, whose lifelong work has explored the essence of what it means to be alive, wrote an op-ed titled "<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/19/opinion/oliver-sacks-on-learning-he-has-terminal-cancer.html">My Own Life</a>," in which he revealed that he's dying of liver cancer:Sacks, a professor of neurology at the NYU School of Medicine and the author of dozens of books and essays, has been described by The Times as a "poet laureate of contemporary medicine," though in the eyes of some critics, he is more artist than scientist.Sacks' breakthrough book, "Awakenings," drew portraits of his patients as they emerged from a deep, postencephalitic haze. It was adapted into the 1990 movie by the same name starring Robin Williams as Sacks. Scientists, artists, glitterati respond to Oliver Sacks' revelation of his terminal illness - 'My luck has run out'

<div class="image-container"><div class="image"><a href="http://www.riddickmovie.com/">Universal</a></div></div>After nearly a decade, <keyword id="6369689" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Vin-Diesel">Vin Diesel</keyword> returns as cult favorite <keyword id="1634783" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Riddick">Riddick</keyword>, a convict with the ability to see in the dark, in this weekend's follow-up to the 2004 film "Chronicles of Riddick."
The third film in the series from director David Twohy ("<a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0878638/" target="_blank">The Fugitive</a>"), the film follows the gist of the two films that precede it with Riddick deserted on a hostile planet left to fend for himself.
The first two films were never major box-office hits. Instead, over the years, the series gained a cult following. ("<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=pitchblack.htm" target="_blank">Pitch Black</a>" earned $53 million worldwide while the costly $105 million sequel "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=chroniclesofriddick.htm" target="_blank">The Chronicles of Riddick</a>" grossed $115 million in theaters.) 
"The reality is that I always envisioned the 'Riddick' franchise as a continuing mythology, so I always imagined that there would be many other films to follow," Diesel told <a href="http://spinoff.comicbookresources.com/2013/09/03/vin-diesel-discusses-riddick-sci-fi-fandom-and-the-future-of-film/" target="_blank">Spinoff Online</a>. "And yet, I do feel like I answered that growing request from the fans that said, 'Please make another Riddick.'"
After many were unfazed by the 2004 sequel "<a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/chronicles_of_riddick/" target="_blank">Chronicles of Riddick</a>," the new film returns to its roots channeling the first film in the series "Pitch Black."
The film is currently <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/riddick/" target="_blank">sitting at 59%</a> on film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. 
No matter how the film is being reviewed, it's the perfect time to release the film - Diesel's riding the media wave after <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fast-and-furious-6-has-127-million-weekend-2013-5" target="_blank">this summer's hugely successful "Fast &amp; Furious 6"</a> and the actor <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/vin-diesel-hints-at-marvel-movie-on-facebook-2013-6" target="_blank">hinted at an appearance in a future Marvel movie</a>. 
It's clear the film is appealing to Diesel's wide fan base. According to a Fandango survey of more than 1,000 "Riddick" ticket-buyers, 89% are fans of the actor while 67% have seen all of his "Fast &amp; Furious" films in theaters.
Here's what you should know before seeing it:
The beginning is great.<div class="image-container"><div class="image"><a href="http://www.riddickmovie.com/">Universal</a></div></div><a href="http://www.empireonline.com/reviews/reviewcomplete.asp?FID=138091">Empire Magazine</a>:
"Largely wordless, the segment reminds us that Diesel still has charisma enough to hold our attention when he's the only human element on screen for 25 minutes, fending off scorpion beasts and taming feral CG wolf-bastards." 
<a href="http://www.timeout.com/us/film/riddick-movie-review" target="_blank">Time Out NY</a>:
"First things first, though-namely a terrific, mostly dialogue-free 20-minute opening during which Riddick acclimates to his new surroundings." 
<a href="http://variety.com/2013/film/reviews/film-review-riddick-1200597570/" target="_blank">Variety</a>: 
"If nothing in 'Riddick' ever quite tops that opening act, when it seems as though the entire movie might be a solo Diesel performance piece, even at its most conventional this is a solid, unpretentious B-movie entertainment of the sort John Carpenter was regularly turning out in the 1980s and '90s."
The dialogue isn't fantastic. Note: This happened with another big blockbuster this year (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fast-and-furious-6-reviews-what-the-critics-are-saying-2013-5" target="_blank">"Fast 6"</a>). It's not the end of the world. You're not heading out to see "Riddick" for dialogue.

"Plenty of bone crunching and blood gushing, along with some selective nudity, have boosted the movie's rating up to an "R," but lacking the distinctive visual style, robust production design and planet-hopping pace of its predecessor."
... and crude jokes.
<a href="http://www.laweekly.com/2013-09-05/film-tv/riddick-movie-review/" target="_blank">L.A. Weekly</a>:
"Instead, we must pan for scraps of pleasure … while trying not to get so riled up by all the rape jokes that we spin around and stab our seatmate ... Nothing says Strong Female Character like a savage babe who spends most of the film getting sexually harassed."
<div class="image-container float_right"><div class="image"><a href="http://www.riddickmovie.com/">Universal</a></div></div>Don't expect anything mind-blowing. THR's Justin Lowe says the film <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movie/riddick/review/617571" target="_blank">doesn't take a lot of risks</a>.
"The latest installment feels tentative even at a flabby 120 minutes, more like a placeholder that barely advances the considerable Riddick mythology. Playing it safe with a script that offers Riddick up as a lone avenging hero, Twohy passes on the opportunity to effectively shade the character's distinctive dimensionality."
<a href="http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/09/04/riddick-review" target="_blank">IGN</a>: 
"It's not to say there isn't entertainment value to be had in this - there are a few cool kills throughout - it's just that we've seen this all before."
Critics can't decide whether they enjoy the CGI planet Riddick inhabits or hate it.

"Watching this see-in-the-dark muscleman brooding against gorgeous otherworldly vistas, all while crafting pointy homemade weapons and befriending a scene-stealing CGI canine (no joke), is a sci-fi aficionado's delight." 
<a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movie/riddick/review/617571">THR</a>: 
 "While 'Chronicles' was a full-blown space opera, the current iteration is beset by unremarkable CGI effects and tethered to limited locations."
Overall, it's fun, campy, and everything that will keep the cult-following of the original film happy, should leave happy.

"It's precisely the movie I thought it would be: an overly macho Vin Diesel killing monsters and scumbags. Predictable and pedestrian, sure, but are you not getting exactly what you pay for? This is a Riddick movie not a Harold Pinter drama."

"And where 'Chronicles' overdosed on cartoonish CGI, 'Riddick' returns to the 'Pitch Black' formula of mixing animated elements with practical effects and puppetry, creating a tactile otherworldly environment that ranges from the sets to the props to the creatures (designed by the great Patrick Tatopoulos) themselves."
Overall Consensus: If you're a fan of the series, and Vin Diesel, see it. 
The film clearly knows its audience. We're not worried about its box-office performance this weekend. The film is the fan favorite for the weekend on Fandango - not that that's a great feat. There honestly isn't much else out, unless a <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/salinger/" target="_blank">poorly reviewed documentary on J.D. Salinger</a> ("Catcher in the Rye" author) sounds appealing.
