And it’s now posting positive numbers despite the likes of <keyword id="6754453" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="zomato-and-swiggy">Zomato and Swiggy</keyword>, offering consumers not just discounts but also variety with hundreds of restaurants. Analysts have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/swiggy-and-zomato-are-eating-into-dominos-slice-of-profit-hurting-jubilant-foodworks/articleshow/69952487.cms">reported</a> that Domino’s lowering same store sales could be due to the growth of food aggregators like Zomato and Swiggy who are only growing their control on Indian consumers. So, why hasn’t the same story applied to McDonald’s, which in its last 15 quarters has clocked positive same store sales. In Q1 FY20, McDonald’s posted a same store sales growth of 7% which also resulted in a12% YoY growth in revenue. “A lot of our competitors in the last 15 quarters have focused on BOGO (Buy One Get One) offers and discounts. But we did things differently, we reinvested in our brand, reimagined our stores,” Smita Jatia, Managing Director, Hardcastle Restaurants, told Business Insider.

 “With the McCafes, we saw that there was a change in the way the customer was using our brand, which also reflected in our delivery numbers. We have thrown the ball out of the court,” said Jatia. While Jatia acknowledges the growth of the likes of Zomato and Swiggy, she said that their partnership with these aggregators have also worked well. “In the last six years, we have also invested heavily into technology to make our own app and website better. So demand comes in from all channels. We have doubled delivery numbers year on year,” she said. Building brand vs Burning cash McDonald’s got its most selling burger in India – Aloo Tikki – certified from the National Institute of Nutrition as a balanced meal, added dietary fibre to other sandwiches, turned to whole wheat buns and reduced the oil in its mayo among other things. “Doing all of these, building these great food stories also meant we built trust in what goes into our food,” said Jatia. McDonald’s India franchisee explains why it gets more customers to its stores despite discounts and convenience of Zomato and Swiggy

<ul><li><keyword id="1185141" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hardcastle-Restaurants">Hardcastle Restaurants</keyword>, the company that owns and operates McDonald's franchises in western and southern India, announced that they will recycle used cooking oil to produce <keyword id="824755" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Biodiesel">biodiesel</keyword> that will fuel its supply delivery trucks.</li><li> 85 restaurants in <keyword id="6358070" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai">Mumbai</keyword> are already converting 35,000 litres of regular oil into biodiesel every month. </li><li>The company plans to bring all their 277 outlets under the recycling programme.</li></ul> Hardcastle Restaurants, the company that owns and operates McDonald's franchises in western and southern India, has <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/hotels-/-restaurants/mcdonalds-to-power-its-trucks-by-recycling-used-cooking-oil/articleshow/65102541.cms">initiated</a> a novel project to help reduce the company’s <keyword id="6404408" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Carbon-footprint">carbon footprint</keyword> in India. The company announced on Monday that they will recycle the cooking oil used in making its food items to produce biodiesel that will fuel its supply delivery trucks. Last year, Hardcastle Restaurants along with Unicon Biofuels, piloted the project in Mumbai. In fact, 85 restaurants in Mumbai are already converting 35,000 litres of regular oil into biodiesel every month. Next, it plans to replicate this in Bengaluru and eventually, according to Vikram Ogale, director, supply chain and quality assurance, Hardcastle Restaurants (HRPL), the company plans to bring all their 277 outlets under the recycling programme. Ogale claims that the fuel generated by converting cooking oil is believed to have 75% lower carbon emissions than diesel over its entire lifecycle. Sandeep Chaturvedi, president of the Biodiesel Association of India, said that this conversion of used cooking oil to biodiesel has been done in adherence with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). He also urged other companies to follow suit and help reduce the burden on the environment. This initiative is, however, not unique to India. In fact, McDonald's UAE launched the first such project way back in 2011. McDonald’s is to fuel its delivery trucks with biodiesel made from used cooking oil

McDonald's India is ensuring that food reaches customers without being touched by bare hands and delivered safe with adequate social distancing measures, Westlife Development said in a regulatory filing. The company said it has provided riders with sanitizers to sanitise hands before and after each delivery and has instructed them to sanitise delivery bags every two hours of use. According to media reports, the Maharashtra FDA has accused McDonald's of deception using cheese substitutes in burgers and nuggets instead of real cheese and the licence of an outlet in Ahmednagar has been suspended. The reports further said the action has resulted in McDonald's removing the word cheese from their menu in several locations, with the Maharashtra FDA asking the fast food chain to remove the usage of word cheese from its menu across India. "Amid recent reports about the removal of 'Cheese' from our menu at McDonald's locations in Maharashtra, we want to assure our valued customers that only genuine, high-quality cheese is used in all our cheese-containing products," the statement said. It further said,"Collaborating with suppliers adhering to global standards ensures top-quality cheese in our product offerings and not cheese analogues or any substitute." McDonald’s and Burger King supplier Mrs Bector's Foods to launch ₹540 crore IPO on December 15

New Delhi, June 12 () Westlife Development, which operates McDonald's restaurants in southern and western region in India, expects demand to remain low in the short-term due to COVID-19 and subsequent disruptions. A large part of Westlife's restaurant business could not be made operational due to the lockdown which has impacted company's revenues and profitability, it said in a filing to the bourses informing about the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the business. "In the short-term, the company is estimating lower demands. Though we do hope the business situation will normalise soon, it is too early to assess the future impact of COVID-19 with reasonable certainty," it said. Currently, over 150 of Westlife's restaurants are operational through different business channels, the company, which owns Hardcastle Restaurants, the master franchisee of McDonald's restaurants for west and south India, said. Hardcastle Restaurants currently operates over 300 McDonald's restaurants across 42 cities and 11 states. "...as large part of our restaurant business could not be made operational due to lockdown, our revenues have been adversely impacted," the filing said. However, the business continued to incur committed expenditures, especially concerning employees and other expenditures not directly linked to revenues, during the lockdown, which significantly impacted profitability. Though the company had closed dine-in services at its McDonald's outlets, its McDelivery and drive-thru facilities were restarted after government releaxed lockdown restrictions. "As normalcy starts beginning June second week pursuant to directions of various states, we are ensuring commercial and supply readiness to open our restaurants, ensuring social distancing norms, highest measures on safety, health and hygiene of our staff, customers and vendors, not only for in-store but also for deliveries and takeaways," it said. The food giant has forayed into the fried chicken category, a market that KFC is known for. Globally, take-Out Fried Chicken Market is expected to register a CAGR of 5.47% to reach USD 8,252.9 Million by 2025. Whereas in India, the organised fried <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/companies/in-their-second-coming-global-chicken-chains-look-to-take-on-kfc-in-india/article9766123.ece#:~:text=%E2%80%9CThe%20organised%20fried%20chicken%20segment,CAGR%20of%2020%20per%20cent.">chicken </a>segment is estimated at ₹1,500 crore, growing at a CAGR of 20 per cent. Speaking on the brand’s foray into this new Chicken category, Smita Jatia, MD, Hardcastle Restaurants Pvt Ltd said, “Since our inception, we have been leading menu innovation to offer our customers products that are unique and clutter-breaking. The new McSpicy Fried Chicken has been launched post very extensive and comprehensive customer research that revealed that our customers in South India like their chicken to be crunchy, spicy and flavourful till the last bite, and we gave them just that. Through this new offering, we aim to recruit new customers from both the organized and the unorganized sector. <ul><li>In a first, McDonald's India partnered with <keyword id="8190094" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Retail-Associations-Skill-Council-of-India">Retail Association’s Skill Council of India</keyword> (RASCI) to launch an undergraduate course in retail operations in India. </li><li>It will be a three-year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) programme in retail operations, which will include both classroom course and on-the job training. </li><li>The programme, which will study the aspects of retail operations will be conducted at <keyword id="1116394" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ness-Wadia-College">Ness Wadia College</keyword> in Pune and the on-the-job training will be across McDonald's restaurants in the West and South region.</li></ul>In a first, McDonald’s India partnered with Retail Association’s Skill Council of India (RASCI) to launch an undergraduate course in retail operations. The course will train skilled floor managers for retail stores. It will be a three-year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) programme in retail operations. It will include a classroom course and on-the job training. "We are confident that our robust training programmes and best-in-class processes will provide a strong foundation for students to acquire skills, enabling livelihood and growth in the burgeoning retail industry," Seema Arora Nambiar, Senior Vice President, Menu, Marketing and People Resources, Hardcastle Restaurants — which operates McDonald’s — <a href="https://retail.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/food-entertainment/food-services/mcdonalds-india-west-and-south-furthers-the-governments-skill-india-mission/71453954">told</a> news agency ANI. The programme will be conducted at Ness Wadia College in Pune. The students will be given on-the-job training across McDonald's restaurants in the West and South region. The programme aims to create a deployment-ready talent pool. McDonald’s to give students hands-on experience in retail operations

<ul><li>Westlife Development, which indirectly owns the McDonald's franchise through Hardcastle Restaurants, reported the best <keyword id="8255942" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="same-store-sales-growth">same store sales growth</keyword> (SSSG) in three quarters.</li><li>While the growth rate is higher, the SSSG is still not at par with the growth during the same quarter, last year.</li><li>The company's profit also more than doubled in Q2 FY20.</li></ul> Westlife Development which indirectly owns the master franchisee of McDonald’s in West and South India posted a yearly revenue growth of 13.3% at ₹3,965.3 million. Profit more than doubled to ₹129.1 million compared to a year earlier. Same store sales growth (SSSG) for Westlife Development continued its upward trajectory, increasing by 7% — which is the best in three quarters — but still significantly lower than the 25% growth clocked the same time last year.  The company’s profit margins improved by 209 basis points (bps) year-on-year. Westlife Development’s stock price closed 2% higher before earnings were even disclosed.
