Chandigarh, May 14 () Online booking and wearing masks will be must for passengers boarding the <keyword id="41646" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Haryana">Haryana</keyword> Roadways buses which are to start plying on select routes in the state from Friday, said Transport Minister Mool Chand Sharma. "No passenger will be allowed to board the bus if online booking has not been done. The bus services will be point-to-point on select routes and wearing masks is mandatory. Thermal screening of passengers will also be done," Sharma told over phone on Thursday. The Haryana government has already sanitised its bus terminals and the ordinary non-air-conditioned buses which will hit roads, he said. To ensure that social distancing is strictly followed, only 30 passengers will be allowed to board the 52-seater buses. In the bus terminuses too, passengers will have to maintain social distancing in the waiting area, he said. The buses will ply from depots in Ambala, Bhiwani, Hisar, Kaithal, Karnal, Narnaul, Panchkula, Rewari, Rohtak and Sirsa and ply on select point-to-point routes. Digitally addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Haryana Chief Minister M L Khattar had announced that public transport will resume operation in the state on an "experimental basis" from Friday, with a limited number of buses plying on select routes. A government spokesman, meanwhile, said the buses, which will ply with in Haryana, will not be started in areas severely affected by COVID-19. He said bookings for these buses can only be done through the online portal www.hartrans.gov.in. "The buses will ply from the Haryana State Transport bus stands to the scheduled bus stands. No passenger will be allowed to board or disembark the bus on the way," he added. He said in a statement that the buses passing through worst-hit COVID-19 affected districts will pass through a bypass or flyovers. Notably, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Sonipat and Jhajjar are among the worst-affected districts in Haryana. He said if the bus movement is not possible on any route due to any reason then passengers will be informed two hours before the scheduled time of departure. The fare paid by the passenger will be refunded, he added. (Eds: Combining related stories) New Delhi, May 15 () The nationwide tally of confirmed COVID-19 cases crossed 85,000 on Friday with more people testing positive for the deadly virus infection from Kashmir to Kerala and from Karnataka to Bihar, even as indications emerged about greater relaxations in the fourth phase of the lockdown beginning Monday to contain economic costs of the pandemic. Going by the numbers declared by different states and union territories, India has now surpassed China's official tally of 82,933 confirmed COVID-19 cases. Though some new cases have emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan -- the epicentre of the deadly virus -- less than 100 people are now undergoing treatment across China, which recorded 4,633 deaths due to COVID-19 but more than 78,000 have been discharged after recovery, as per their official data. Globally, more than 3 lakh people have died and nearly 45 lakh have tested positive for the deadly virus since its emergence in Wuhan last December. While China and several other countries have begun reopening their economies, fresh concerns have begun mounting about a possible re-emergence of the virus. India is now the 11th most affected nation in the world, but each one of the top-ten have one lakh or more cases. The US tops the charts with more than 14 lakh cases, followed by Russia, UK, Spain, Italy and Brazil with over 2 lakh cases each; and France, Germany, Turkey and Iran having over 1 lakh cases each. In its morning 8 AM update, the Union Health Ministry said the death toll due to COVID-19 across India has risen to 2,649 and the number of cases has climbed to 81,970, registering an increase of 100 deaths and 3,967 cases in the last 24 hours since Thursday morning. There are more than 51,000 active cases, while nearly 28,000 have recovered, giving a recovery rate of over 34 per cent. However, a tally of numbers reported by states and UTs, as of 9 PM, put the total number of confirmed cases across the country much higher at 85,538. This also showed at least 2,679 deaths and nearly 30,000 recoveries. Jammu &amp; Kashmir, Bihar and Karnataka breached the 1,000-mark in terms of the number of people having tested positive, while testing and containment measures were ramped up in places like, Kerala, Goa and Manipur that were being seen as being mostly virus-free till a few days back. Even a quarantine centre had to be sealed in Manipur. On the other hand, large numbers of cases continued to get detected in big urban clusters. Maharashtra, the most-affected state, reported 1,576 new cases to take its tally to 29,100, while its death toll rose to 1,068. Tamil Nadu crossed the 10,000 mark with 434 new cases, while Gujarat saw 340 more people testing positive to push its tally to 9,932. According to the Union Health Ministry, 30 municipal areas account for 79 per cent of India's coronavirus infection caseload. At a meeting of a group of ministers chaired by Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, it was stressed that the focus of COVID-19 management strategy needs to be on the states with the highest number of confirmed cases and fatalities. Also, focus is needed on treatment and case fatality management, for which timely detection and contact tracing were the best way forward. The Finance Ministry in the meantime unveiled the third booster dose, mainly consisting of measures aimed at helping farmers and for reforms in agriculture and allied sectors, of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Rs 20 lakh crore 'special package' for making India self-reliant in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Modi said the third tranche will help the rural economy and boost farmers' income. India has been under a lockdown since March 25, which was initially scheduled to end on April 14 but has got extended twice -- first till May 3 and then till May 17 with some relaxations. A final decision on the fourth phase is expected soon, but officials said there could be greater relaxations and more flexibility for states and union territories while measures being explored include gradual reopening of the railways and domestic airlines. Schools, colleges, malls and cinema halls may not be allowed to open anywhere in the country, but salons, barber shops and optical shops may be allowed everywhere barring COVID-19 containment areas. E-retailers may be allowed to deliver non-essential items too. Final guidelines will be issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs after going through the suggestions of various state governments. During his last interaction with chief ministers, Modi had asked them to submit their suggestions by May 15. According to officials, Punjab, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Assam and Telangana want the lockdown to continue, while some states have sought powers to decide the zoning of districts -- green, orange and red -- as per the COVID-19 situation. This request of the state governments may be accepted so that they can restrict or allow movement of people or economic activities in a particular place depending on the ground situation, an official told . Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address to the nation on Monday, had said that the lockdown 4.0 will have a "completely different form", with new rules. "No state wants complete withdrawal of lockdown but all want gradual resumption of economic activities," the official said. Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka are among some states which are not in favour of complete resumption of train and air services, at least till May-end. The railways have already started special trains to 15 destinations from Delhi and have been running several hundred 'Shramik Special' trains from different parts of the country to various places for transportation of migrant workers stranded due to the lockdown. Air India is also engaged in evacuation of thousands of Indians stranded abroad during the lockdown under the 'Vande Bharat Mission'. However, there have been cases of people testing positive after reaching their native places using these trains and flights. Officials said local trains, buses and metro services may start running with limited capacity in non-containment areas of red zones. Autos and taxis are also expected to be allowed in all zones with restrictions on the number of passengers, barring areas identified as 'containment zones'. Maharashtra has favoured strict lockdown measures in Mumbai, its suburbs and Pune, and a complete ban on inter-state and inter-district transport. However, Gujarat wants resumption of economic activities in major urban centres. Delhi, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala have also favoured opening up of economic activities. Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha, which have seen a spike in the COVID-19 cases after arrival of migrant workers, want the lockdown to continue with strict curbs on movement of people. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has urged Modi not to open state boundaries for the next few months, except for migrants or essential services. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the state has written to the Centre urging extension of the lockdown by two more weeks. Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa said the Centre may announce many relaxations in the lockdown after May 17. You step out your front door just as an autonomous vehicle pulls up. The name UBER is emblazoned on the dashboard near the front seat, but there's no steering wheel or driver. Inside, four other people are heading in the same direction as you.On the way to pick up another passenger, you pass an apartment building that was once a parking garage. After about 15 minutes, the car notifies you and three other passengers that it will drop you all off at a subway stop. With an internet connection, the car knows a train is approaching in approximately four minutes. Thanks to artificial intelligence, the car understands a subway will be the fastest way to get the four of you to your workplaces. Its system takes into account everyone (walkers, bikers, bus riders, too) who lives in the city.You get out, and the car drives itself away to pick up another commuter. It doesn't fully park until 2am when it returns to its home base for maintenance. Many other cars on the road are driverless, and they're owned and controlled by Uber and its competitors.This vision of the future is a striking departure from how Americans' commutes have looked for the greater part of the last century (You drive your private car to work, park it, and then drive home). Both tech and legacy car companies are dreaming of and working toward this driverless future, in which a car is a pay-as-you-go service rather than a personal possession. This would change not only Americans' relationship to the automobile but also the way our cities are designed. Featuring more lanes and parking than sidewalks, the majority of US cities and towns <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-design-cities-that-dont-need-cars-2015-2">have been planned around the needs of the automobile</a> rather than the pedestrian.Driverless carpools may be the catalyst to change that.<h2>Uber's vision for the future of <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword></h2>Andrew Salzberg, Uber's head of transportation policy, has never owned a car. He didn't even have a driver's license until his late 20s. Instead, living in Montreal, Boston, DC, and New York, he got around by subway, bus, bike, and Uber. Each car's route would be optimized based on traffic and commute pattern data, Salzberg says. Alex Pazuchanics, a policy advisor for the City of Pittsburgh who's overseeing the Uber project, tells Business Insider that it's now normal to see robotic Ubers roaming around downtown Pittsburgh and its surrounding neighborhoods.The Ford cars feature GPS and 360-degree cameras mounted on the roof that allow them to "see." Hubs of sensors whir as the cars self-drive.Pazuchanics remembers his first time seeing the autonomous vehicles: Two came from opposite directions, and calmly stopped at an intersection, which felt a little eerie."This stuck with me as just like, wow, this technology is being adopted at a rapid pace," he says.Uber's service came to Pittsburgh in 2013, and the robotics department at Carnegie Mellon University started drawing up the autonomous vehicles project two years later. Today, Uber has 500 employees in the city's industrial Strip District working on the self-driving initiative.The new fleet of driverless cars aren't used for UberPool, but Pazuchanics says the city is actively considering how it can adapt its streets for shared driverless vehicles in coming years. Pazuchanics believes Pittsburgh and other cities around the US can harness data that driverless cars collect to make urban design more focused on people, rather than cars, emphasizing sidewalks, parks, housing, shops, and zones where cars are banned. The average American car stays stationary for 22 hours per day (<a href="http://fortune.com/2016/03/13/cars-parked-95-percent-of-time/">95% of the time</a>). But a driverless carpool vehicle that picks up and drops off passengers 24 hours a day would rarely need to park.For Pittsburgh, the greatest promise of driverless carpools is that they'd lower the number of cars on the road, Pazuchanics says. That means the city could turn find new uses for its unused roadways and parking lots."There are a lot of opportunities to recapture and rebalance what the area from curb to curb is for," Pazuchanics says. And any future lanes and parking spaces that are built could be smaller, since autonomous cars eliminate human error.Driverless fleets also promise an unprecedented level of data, Pazuchanics says, which could track everything from what times people leave for work to which roads they take. Pittsburgh has manually counted traffic at a handful of intersections for decades to understand how residents move in the city, but that small amount of (often unreliable) information is nothing compared to the real-time data that fleets of driverless cars could provide. For example, right now, Pittsburgh is programming 50 <a href="https://www.surtrac.net/">traffic lights</a> that will interact with Uber's driverless cars to determine whether to extend green lights for buses and pedestrians in real-time. The city received a <a href="https://cms.dot.gov/Briefing-Room/Advanced-Technology-Transportation-Projects">$11 million</a> grant from the federal government in October to build them.That information, Pazuchanics says, could one day inform city-level decisions. Maybe it would tell policymakers where to eliminate parking or add more buses.<h2>But will companies actually share their data? </h2>Any time we use Google Maps or use Uber to get to work, we are giving these companies a fuller picture of how we get around. Yet, the companies creating driverless cars have been reluctant to share that data with other companies and cities. They see it as trade secrets, rather than a way to make the whole system work better. Uber is currently not sharing any data with Pittsburgh officials, though it is an "ongoing conversation," according to Pazuchanics.Critics of Uber's vision worry that the company won't do what's best for city populations at large, but instead, what's best for its own platform.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">AP/Diane BondareffAn Uber rider requests a ride, Friday, Sept. 4, 2015 in New York.</div></div></div>Clayton Lane, the director of the Institute of Transportation Development and Policy, tells BI that as Uber becomes cheaper, driverless rideshares could compete with mass transit."The problem is that Uber and others are providing inaccurate price signals to travelers - $2 a ride is only possible because they are massively subsidizing that trip with capital they're receiving from investors. It's not because it actually costs $2," he says. "And even more dangerous is the message associated with it: that car use should replace public transit. I don't think that is true, nor beneficial for society."In some ways, <a href="http://gizmodo.com/america-s-public-transit-is-broken-and-it-s-all-your-fa-1765691114">ridesharing apps are already</a> removing riders from public transportation systems. Uber recently tested $2 carpool rides in Manhattan (that's less than the price of a subway ride) and transit authorities in LA <a href="http://www.latimes.com/local/california/la-me-ridership-slump-20160127-story.html">suspect</a> that people who live in areas underserved by public transit are taking Uber and Lyft straight to their final destinations, rather than a subway or bus stop.Lane argues that making ride-sharing data available to everyone will be crucial to any effort to make cities more pedestrian-friendly."We need to make sure that private companies that are contributing to this technology development can be profitable in a shared economy, but at the same time, make sure that the data is open-source or owned by the public," he says. "There is a risk that if private companies own all our data, they're the only ones who can give us the information of how to get from A to B. The <a href="https://www.transportation.gov/AV">federal guidelines for autonomous vehicles</a>, published in September, express the same sentiment.Anthony Foxx, the US Secretary of Transportation, says it's important that cities invest in public transit and that companies share data. He specifically points to areas with rapid population growth, like West Coast states and the southeast, where he grew up."Car manufacturers have historically been very competitive. The culture hasn't been as collaborative," he tells Business Insider. "But I think it's changing, and it needs to change."In cities, more transit options will be essential, Foxx says. In 2036, he imagines far more bike lanes, pedestrian-only areas, driverless rideshares, subways, high-speed trains, and buses. Anthony Levandowski, the head of Uber's self-driving divisions, has faith that cities will adapt to this change. In a decade or so, he predicts that his 2-year-old and 6-year-old children won't even bother to take a driving test. "For me, it's crystal clear that the future is shared self-driving vehicles, both cars and trucks," he <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/anthony-levandowski-uber-interview-2016-12">previously told</a> Business Insider. "In 20 years, I think it will be weird for people to say 'I'm getting my driver's license.'"Driverless cars will become a dominant part of how future generations get around, he says.
