Chatbots hallucinate and get confused, says Jio Haptik which is ‘training’ them

Financial markets will be keenly watching the committee's stance as consumer inflation is still above the 6 per cent target band. "The RBI will be presenting the monetary policy against the backdrop of GDP growth slowing down as well as inflation being high above 6 per cent. The central bank had already hiked the key policy rate by 190 basis points since May to 5.9 per cent to cool off domestic retail inflation that has stayed above the RBI's upper tolerance limit for over three quarters now. In October, retail inflation was 6.77 per cent. Under the flexible inflation targeting framework introduced in 2016, the RBI is deemed to have failed in managing price rises if the CPI-based inflation is outside the 2-6 per cent range for three quarters in a row. An out-of-turn meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank of India was held in early November to discuss and draft the report to be sent to the central government for having failed in maintaining the inflation mandate. The meeting was called under Section 45ZN of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Act 1934, which pertains to steps to be taken if the central bank fails to meet its inflation-targeting mandate. Bank of Baroda expects 25-35 basis points rate hike from Dec 5-7 RBI policy meet

<ul><li>Reliance Industries-backed <keyword id="4380499" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Haptik">Haptik</keyword> has acquired Buzzo.ai. </li><li>Buzzo.ai’s functionality works on similar lines as that of Amazon’s <keyword id="196611" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alexa">Alexa</keyword>. </li><li>The idea is to simulate a real-life sales associate for commerce.</li></ul>Reliance Industries-backed Haptik has acquired Buzzo.ai, a voice conversational commerce platform for an undisclosed amount. This is expected to power <keyword id="6354504" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-jio">Reliance Jio</keyword>, the telecom venture owned by Asia’s richest man Mukesh Ambani, and, possibly, his upcoming e-commerce venture. Buzzo.ai works on similar lines of Alexa, where through an Artificial Intelligence assistant it can understand a customer's needs through conversation. It then comes up with the most relevant recommendations that match the specific inputs and explains why that may be the best choice. The acquisition of Buzzo.ai by Haptik is expected to complement Reliance Jio’s $100 million bet, for an 87% stake, on Haptik made in April this year. “Essentially as a company the way we are set up is that we have our business which involves delivering customer experience and AI solutions for all our clients. And Reliance Jio is the biggest client. That’s how buzzo will be extended, the solutions will be given to all our clients including Jio, through which we hope to generate a ton of business,” Aakrit Vaish, co-founder and CEO, Haptik told Business Insider. Vaish admits that Buzzo.ai’s functionality is like an Alexa. However, how it will be taken to market might be different, according to him. “It will be driven into the B2B market to our clients, who will further implement it for their customers,” he said. Haptik currently has over 50 clients across the US and India. Vaish hopes to double their business in the next year thanks to backing by Reliance and subsequent acquisitions.

To misquote the “I, Robot” quote, even one year, technologically speaking, could mean a lot, today. As chatbots continue to explore new technological advances, could voice-based chatbots leapfrog text-based ones? Could regional language and use of messaging platforms become key drivers for success? A $500M market growing at over 30% annually - the fact is, chatbots are becoming the conversations of today and tomorrow. And that’s where the biggest danger lies. Newer chatbots are getting launched in the market at a fast pace, but only a few understand their clear value. Result? Confusion. Hype. Noise. Poncho is a great illustration of that. . Its purpose is to give information on weather. And the way it does that in a cool, quirky manner is what makes the content itself interesting. 4. THE SELLER The Conversational Commerce chatbot aims to complete a sale transaction through conversation. Example: 1-800 flowers. It has proved that chatbots are less than a call away. Many new customers find it easier to order flowers through a chat as compared to a call. 5. THE STORYTELLER The Advertising chatbot is not a separate chatbot by itself. But just imagine being able to see the right advertisement as you are conversing with a chatbot without requiring a separate download or an additional click.  Customer Support chatbots have already proven their mettle, to a considerable extent. With Facebook opening up its messenger platform, many companies have embraced chatbots, especially for Customer Service. Globe Telecom’s Customer Service chatbot, Gie, claims to have improved customer satisfaction by 22%, lowered service calls by 50%, and saved 10% within a year. But enterprise chatbots may not be what we always need. Verticalized, direct-to-consumer chatbots can solve problems beyond Customer Service. That’s where Utility chatbots such as Haptik or Vernacular have started to build innovative vertical offerings. What about commerce though? Commerce chatbots have not yet proven their case despite promising to make sales easier through conversation. Chatbots of today: Living true to their purpose?

Growing up in 70’s Kolkata, I remember the frequent blackouts in the evenings. Not with disgust. But with fond memories. It was a signal for us to break into stories and songs.  What was really jarring for me, was the lack of character and design in the chatbot. It was clear that I was really not conversing, just getting quotes that I could have downloaded from Goodreads. Building a good character – the chatbot way: A successful chatbot is just that. A good conversation. Just as in a fiction story, what makes it work are characters that are memorable and consistent in their quirkiness and not just cardboard cutouts. Imagine Huckleberry Finn suddenly turning polite. Or Scarlett O’Hara from Gone with the Wind becoming unselfish. That wouldn’t be “in character.” Are characters for chatbots built the same way? Jagrat, UX designer at <keyword id="4380499" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Haptik">Haptik</keyword>, one of India’s highest rated chatbots says, “creating a chatbot is much like creating a script for a conversation between two actors. One actor you know because you created her -the chatbot- and the other actor is the unknown consumer. And just like a writer, we have to create an imaginary world where these two characters can have a real conversation. A chatbot has to develop a distinct persona which sets the tone of the conversation.” Turning up the Tone volume: Let’s take two very different examples to understand this. <keyword id="1354073" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Poncho">Poncho</keyword> and Haptik.  Their characters? Poncho is quirky, humorous, opinionated. Haptik is dependable, helpful and fast. Here’s how the tone of the two chatbots differed when I started conversing with them: Sipping my cup of hot tea on a rainy Bangalore evening, I asked Poncho for a quick weather update. Poncho gave me the information I needed and added some irreverent opinion of its own. The tone was a mix of informality and humor. I asked Haptik to set up a simple exercise reminder for me. Haptik first asked me what I needed – the date, the type of exercise, the time and then confirmed it. Polite, dependable. Fast. Both the chatbots were in character.  A single smiley can make or break a conversation with a chatbot. Bad design can kill it completely. When I move from simple reminders to more complex tasks, it is easy for a chatbot to lose context. Imagine asking a chatbot questions like “Can you web-check me in for the flight you booked for me two weeks back?” Machine learning may not have the answers. And content alone may not be enough. Haptik segregates “flights” from “all travel” to reduce chances of errors and uses forms or lists to encourage more tapping. These make the conversation crisper and tighter. I tried typing a flight number without telling Haptik what I needed it to do. Rather than giving up, Haptik gave me a list to tap on. Less typing for me to do. And a clearer query for Haptik to solve. The designer on the other hand has a lot more work to plan this in advance. Use of carousels, sliding photos, typing indicators. Even down to the length of time between the messages and the colour on the screen. Contrast this with what I found in Poncho. As I moved from weather to traffic updates, I met an unexpected bottleneck. Traffic updates were not covered for my location, Bangalore. The colors and the font sizes were bolder in Poncho. But the message was still clear. Plain, simple. Poncho could not solve this query. No room for confusion. Beyond the chat-ter: There is endless chatter around the future of chatbots. Will generic platform chatbots seize the day? Or will branded chatbots become more pervasive? Will a hybrid approach of chatbots along with human interface win the art of the conversation? Over the next few weeks, we will explore each such aspect of the chatbot’s journey in more detail in a series of articles that go beyond the chatbot chatter. How character and design blend together to build the perfect Chatbot
