The profit was, however, higher quarter-on-quarter when compared to Rs 17,265 crore in October-December period. For the full fiscal FY24 (April 2023 to March 2024), Reliance posted a record net profit of Rs 69,621 crore as compared to Rs 66,702 crore earnings in the preceding financial year. Reliance also became the first Indian company to hit Rs 10 lakh crore turnover in FY24 when revenue from operations rose 2.6 per cent from Rs 9.74 lakh crore in 2022-23. The oil-to-chemicals (O2C) business, the main milch cow, posted a rise in profitability annually as well as sequentially, while retail business' earnings rose on new store openings despite lower footfalls. This was primarily because of "advantageous" sourcing of feedstock (crude oil) for refining business and use of ethane for making chemicals as well as higher domestic product placement, a company statement said, adding exports were down 8.5 per cent. For the full year, Jio posted a profit of Rs 21,424 crore as compared to Rs 19,124 crore in FY23. Profits from the retail business climbed 11.7 per cent to Rs 2,698 crore as store count rose to 18,836 from 18,774. Store footfalls dropped to 272 million from 282 million in October-December 2023 but were higher than 219 million recorded in January-March 2023. Oil and gas EBITDA soared 47.5 per cent to Rs 5,606 crore as higher gas volumes partly offset lower price realisation. The firm's flagship KG-D6 block in Krishna Godavari basin in the Bay of Bengal is now producing about 30 million standard cubic metres per day of gas and 23,000 barrels a day of oil/condensate. The company said its outstanding debt rose to Rs 3.24 lakh crore from Rs 3.11 lakh crore in December-end. After accounting for cash in hand, net debt at Rs 1.16 lakh crore as on March 31 was lower than Rs 1.25 lakh crore a year back. They pointed to the wave of bitcoin ETF applications from big players as evidence that crypto is here to stay.But I'd argue that's an even bigger risk for the industry. Financial giants could view the details from the trial as evidence for why they should co-opt crypto from smaller, native players.BlackRock and Fidelity have both filed applications for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/blackrock-spot-bitcoin-etf-crypto-reactions-2023-6">launching bitcoin ETFs</a>. Sam Bankman-Fried isn't the only one on trial. The entire crypto industry is.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>YouTuber Marina Joyce was embroiled in a bizarre conspiracy theory in July 2016.</li><li>People thought she had been kidnapped after she released a series of odd videos.</li></ul>A frenzy swept the internet in July 2016 when casual viewers and YouTube's biggest stars alike were all consumed by the same question: What happened to Marina Joyce?Joyce, then a popular 19-year-old creator known for her emo style and makeup tutorials, uploaded a video that many thought was odd.Speculation mounted, developing into a kind of mass hysteria including the theory that she had been kidnapped by ISIS.Joyce didn't respond to Insider's multiple attempts to reach her for this article.The video was normal enough — it was an ad for a fashion brand, so she was showing off some outfits in her garden.But people became convinced that Joyce's demeanour was a call for help. She was unblinking, unnatural, and seemed to keep looking away from the camera for guidance, they said.At one point, a person's hand was visible and seemed to coach her on where to stand. Fans were also certain that they heard Joyce whisper "Help me."<h2>Conspiracies quickly spread</h2>Conspiracy theories spread as viewers analysed every second of the video in detail, with some concluding Joyce was being held hostage. Others perceived some sort of breakdown.Regardless, their mission was the same and took on the form of the hashtag #SaveMarinaJoyce, which started trending worldwide.Things only got weirder when Joyce started advertising an event in London, and tweeted her fans asking them to party with her.Theorists ran wild with this information, concluding that Joyce was working with ISIS, and putting on an event to capture more unsuspecting victims.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/police-visited-youtube-vlogger-marina-joyce-after-a-conspiracy-theory-made-fans-think-she-had-been-kidnapped-by-isis-2016-7">British police confirmed she was safe after visiting her home</a>, but conspiracies continued to spread for some time.The video is now removed from Joyce's channel, but <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNpf6905icg&amp;ab_channel=Primink">according to screenshots obtained by the YouTuber Primink</a>, the frenzy drove some 50 million views across her whole catalog of content."I don't know if there was any case quite like that before Marina Joyce, especially breaking through to where the mainstream media was covering it," expert Todd Grande told Insider.Grande, PhD, is a mental-health counselor who runs a YouTube channel where he discusses the behavior and actions of popular internet creators.Conspiracy theories have always been around, Grande said, as has magical thinking — believing one has connected the dots in the way the rest of humanity has been unable to."I think what's curious is that if you look at who becomes a conspiracy theorist, you wouldn't think they'd be very interested in Marina Joyce," Grande said."I think what happened is that a few connect-the-dots-type people saw her behavioral change, which was pretty drastic to be fair to them, and then they started thinking, well, there must be a wider explanation."<h2>YouTubers and news outlets were transfixed</h2>Joyce started her internet career in 2012, making videos like many did at the time: makeup looks, Q&amp;As, and skits. She took inspiration from other creators in the early YouTube days including Eugenia Cooney, Shane Dawson, and Zoella, and quickly earned 600,000 subscribers.Four years later, viewers started to realize Joyce was repeating herself, seeming to move in strange, stiff motions, and making some unusual content choices. Then, #SaveMarineJoyce happened, and viewers became convinced she needed help, citing unexplained bruises on her arm, and the person behind the camera.Some of YouTube's biggest creators at the time, including Keemstar, Jenna Marbles, and Alfie Deyes, weighed in, discussing the theories about a potential kidnapping. Deyes urged his fans not to attend her event.The story hit mainstream news headlines, and Joyce gained over a million subscribers while people tried to solve the mystery."They put all these pieces together, that it had to be these terrorists who kidnapped her, and it just led to a frenzy," Grande said.Joyce didn't directly address the theories. When she story died down, she continued posting like nothing had happened. Some then started accusing her of creating a hoax on purpose.Grande described the YouTube channels covering the story as a "pack of hyenas" — once one channel covers a story, the rest are likely to follow suit."It is a very low standard for what causes a critical mass," Grande said. "And Marina, I think, checked all the boxes: She's attractive, she was young, there was a kidnapping angle, there was a behavioral change, she was a fairly popular content creator even before the scandal. So she was a perfect mark for the drama channels."Grande said he doesn't believe Joyce made it up, and it was clear she couldn't do anything to stop it once the storm was in motion.The furore died down within a few weeks, and people moved on. But after three years, in August 2019, Joyce was in the center of another mystery <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/police-search-youtube-marina-joyce-missing-2019-8">when she went missing for 10 days</a>. She was found safe, but yet again, there was no explanation.<h2>Joyce opened up a few years later</h2>That was until December 9, 2022. Joyce gave a rare insight into what happened back in 2016 and beyond in a video titled "SAVING MARINA JOYCE - My Story." She started by welcoming her fans, who she calls "beautiful sacred moon kitties," then said she was going to explain a lot of what happened over the past few years.She said she had never gone missing, but that her parents had been worried about her and phoned the police. She said she seemed so "weird and laggy" in her content in 2016 because she had been partying a lot, which had led her down "a really dark path."Grande said the video seemed to be a stream of consciousness, which didn't actually answer many questions about Joyce's past."I think it was a window into her thought process, which is kind of a scattered high energy, and I think very oriented toward new age religion and philosophy," he said.Joyce said she had seen the Akashic records — a philosophical theory about accessing all the memories of the universe that have ever existed — and had been exploring "auras and loads of magical things."Joyce also pointed to a myriad of long-standing mental-health problems, as well as an apparent diagnosis of multiple sclerosis which affected her vision.She said she went through a period where she thought she was dying because she was suffering painful headaches that debilitated her."I was suffering deeply in secrets, so I did not tell anybody how much I was suffering apart from my boyfriend, and he was helping me through it," she said. Insider sent Joyce's boyfriend an email but did not hear back. He does not appear to have posted publicly on social media since 2021.Joyce said that teachings from the Hare Krishna movement cured her MS symptoms. She also said cannabis is a "cure" for MS."I was dying, my brain was dying," Joyce said. "I'm so much happier now. My life is so good and I'm really happy. There's no reason to worry about me now."There is no cure for MS, according to the Mayo Clinic, but there are many treatment options for its symptoms. According to MS Society, cannabis is among them, and can ease muscle spasms and stiffness.<h2>A cautionary YouTube tale</h2>Joyce is still posting on YouTube. Her last video was uploaded a month ago where she tried on festival outfits. She did not respond to Insider's requests for comment via social media, and emails sent to her account bounced back.However, in a community note on her YouTube channel, and in a post on X, she said she had been recently hospitalized after losing her vision. She said it had returned and she was currently in recovery, hoping to post more videos soon.Joyce's story is a cautionary tale of the internet age, where social media can be an accelerant for irrational, far-fetched beliefs.Conspiracies about kidnapping are always going to be more attractive than the reality that a young woman who likes makeup may be struggling with her mental health, Grande said. So people just ran with it — "they thought she was a victim and they made her a victim."

Journalist Karan Thapar famously called him his ‘most difficult interview.’ Much is known about him thanks to his 2018 authorised biography Notes of a Dream written by <a href="https://scroll.in/reel/897429/10-things-we-learnt-about-ar-rahman-from-the-authorised-biography-notes-of-a-dream">Krishna Trilok</a> – like him giving up his Hindu identity to embrace <keyword id="893778" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sufi-islam" source="Orion">Sufi Islam</keyword>. Here are some lesser-known facts about Rahman, the first Asian to win two Oscars. Rahman’s ad jingles Rahman composed ad jingles for Airtel, Titan watches, Premier pressure cooker and <a href="https://www.cinestaan.com/articles/2017/jan/6/3693/do-you-know-these-10-ad-jingles-composed-by-ar-rahman">Renault</a>, among others in his initial years. AR Rahman can leave dinner midway if inspiration strikes & other anecdotes about the reticent music maestro

October to February is when India sees high spikes in both domestic and local tourism across India. This is the time when charter flights to Goa begin landing, this is when the hotels near the coffee plantations in south India hike their rates. This is also when domestic carriers typically increase rates – this year rates increased by almost 24% in October alone. Other than cooler climes, this is also when most of India’s large festivals are celebrated, many of which are linked to agrarian cycles of harvesting or sowing. 
 
There’s Dussera, Diwali, Christmas, Pongal and Chhath Puja celebrated during this period (Onam is another biggie but that was celebrated in September this year). Smaller ones such as Janmashtami or Govardhan Puja also happen during this time. Many of these festivals are celebrated in situ, and are becoming increasingly popular for non-traditional tourists who converge at temple towns to participate in the festivities and seek blessings. 
 
I’ve travelled across many of these towns and interacted with temple priests, tourists, shop-owners, craftswomen and craftsmen, local residents, hotel owners and finally the most ‘in-you-face’ category of people, the local tourist guides to understand how modern influences are affecting traditions in these temple towns, especially that of oral story-telling. Interestingly and contrary to what most of us might think given the immediate access to information we have via our smartphones, the demand for local stories has dramatically increased over the last few years. 
 Part of this is due to more tourist footfalls (including that of foreign tourists) while the other is due to a demand for more engaging narratives. A demand for more anecdotal and topical stories rather than just a historical narrative. Often this topicality is derived from local <keyword id="1225445" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="folk-tales">folk tales</keyword> and <keyword id="22258" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Folk-songs">folk songs</keyword> of that particular region and will be completely missing in the historical information dispensed in the formal tourist brochures. 
 
Take Govardhan Puja or Janmashtami, for instance. You have tourists converging at all places with important Krishna temples across the country. So there would be tourists flocking to Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh or other important temples such as the Guruvayur temple in Kerala, Dwarkadish in Gujarat, the ISKON temples (across India) or the Rajagopalaswamy Temple in Tamil Nadu among others. Domestic tourism is the economic mainstay of many of these towns, driving the local economy and providing a livelihood to the local population. In many of these places, the narration of folk tales and folk songs is an important local occupation. Yet, tourism, consumerism and other influences are subtlety influencing these tales and folklores – impacting both content and context. 
 
Nowhere is this more apparent than in Braj in Uttar Pradesh, the region associated with Lord Krishna’s early years and interestingly the region where he spent time with consort Radha. The ancient texts, epics, and folklore within this region create culturally (though not politically) defined borders and demarcations, so that Braj can be said to cover an area of approximately 5000 sq. kms. Braj ranks high in popularity as a pilgrimage destination and tales of Krishna and Radha abound in every household and resonate off every tongue. 
 
I would like to refer to a folktale that is narrated at two different towns of Braj Region, Gowardhan and Barsana. Radha and Krishna are at the focal point of many of narratives. While Barsana is recognized as the place where Radha grew up, Krishna is said to have spent his later childhood days at Nandgaon, 8 kms away from Barsana. Radha is considered to be Krishna’s ‘Shakti’ (strength). The folktale I refer to tells a very famous tale of adolescent Krishna at Gowardhan. In this, he lifted a hill named Giriraj or Gowardhan parbat on the tip of his little finger for seven days and nights to shield the Brajwasi (people of Braj) from a deluge of rain sent down by an angry Lord Indra. Most Indians are familiar with this narrative. However in neighbouring Barsana, where Radha grew up, the same folktale recounts the same plot and form but includes an important element missing in the other tale. It recounts that it was Radha, the embodiment of ‘Shakti’ (female supernatural power) who was the actual enabler of Krishna’s heroic act. The tale states that it was Radha who supported Krishna by giving him her divine power to lift the hill. The power came from her left eyelashes and also enabled her to remain invisible. 
 
The transmission of the folktales and folk songs from one generation to the next results in variations which leads to effective narration for eager audiences. The authenticity of these variations cannot be challenged as each version seems to be true. The narrators comprise the Pandas or Goswamis (local priests) and the local tourist guides. Unfortunately I did not find any female priests or female guides. The use of quotes, proverbs, folk metaphors, and other linguistic clichés is fairly common, depending on the narrator. The story-teller weaves in elements from festivals, social events, occasions and human relationships from across the region. The folk tales are so much a part of the cultural ethos of the region that they have also been converted into folk songs, sung by the young and old alike with local CD renditions of it – always in high in demand by tourists and locals both. Interestingly, the modern renditions of these popular folksongs have even used western songs and musical instruments – such as a popular version called ‘Happy Birthday Radhaji’. Symbolic references to other religions also creep in, often well integrated within the folktale itself. For example, in Barsana, local folklore includes the narratives of Gulab Sakhi, a Mughal soldier who became a devotee of Radha. Local narrators delight in highlighting the tale of Radha staying with an old soldier named Gulab Sakhi, disguised as his daughter. Gulab Sakhi’s own daughter had left him after her marriage and he missed her desperately, and was longing to see her. When Radha got to know this, she disguised herself and lived with him as his daughter. He eventually realized this and subsequently became one of her greatest devotees. 
 
It is through oral transmission that the stories continue to form the textures of the lives and livelihoods in these regions and many other regions as well. Elements of social justice, fairness and humanity combine into a rich tapestry enabling these traditional narratives survive. While it is interesting to see how the telling of these tales, many of which originated in oral traditions, continues to flourish, it will be fascinating to see how continuing modern influences will affect these narratives in times to come!
