I wished I had a sister to answer questions I had. </li><li>But I've realized there were benefits to being an only child as I've gotten older.</li></ul>When I was a little girl, I used to ask my mom to adopt another child so that I could have an older sister. I wasn't lonely — I had plenty of friends and got along great with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unsupervised-play-outdoors-kids-neighborhood-benefits-2024-5">other kids in the neighborhood</a> and at school. But once I started to get older (and learned how to be self-conscious), I wanted an older sibling to "show me the ropes," in a sense.I wanted somebody to turn to for social and relationship — heck, even fashion — advice. It would've also been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/only-child-desire-multiple-children-family-2024-4">nice to have a sibling</a> who could occasionally take some of the blame and attention from my parents away from me.<h2 id="c7601f17-ad9b-445a-8502-556c74c44083">When I was younger, I always wanted a sister</h2>I also wanted a sister to show me how to be a young girl going through adolescence. Shaving? Periods? I had questions I felt I couldn't ask my friends and that no puberty book could answer about social norms. My mom and I did have conversations, and she did the best that any parent could to help me, but there were certain things I just didn't want to talk to her about. Besides, with the 40+ year age gap between us, I didn't always feel as though she could <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-kid-baby-boomer-parents-generational-differences-parenting-lessons-2024-4">relate to my experiences</a>.I used to want that guidance and closeness I felt one could only get from a sister. Maybe I'm romanticizing that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/living-with-sister-home-base-stop-moving-2024-6">sisterhood relationship</a>. I wouldn't know. I'll never know what it's like to have a sister — or a sibling, for that matter. I didn't need an older sibling figure to look up to, or one to look out for me. Being an only child, at least for me, taught me how to be independent and resourceful (for example, I learned how to braid my hair thanks to a magical thing called YouTube in 2012). And while it meant getting some extra attention I sometimes didn't want from my parents, it also meant I got all the benefits they offered; I didn't have to share their positive attention or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/financial-advice-from-baby-boomer-parents-for-gen-z-2024-5">their wisdom</a>.Plus, I got all their financial support, which was a huge help for paying my university tuition. With fewer kids, we could travel more and to cooler places than I think we would've if I had siblings. Don't worry, though. My parents weren't afraid to say "no" to me, and I certainly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/only-child-gets-more-stuff-but-not-spoiled-2024-6">wasn't spoiled</a>.I had no problem learning how to share, as my parents were very good about ensuring I put others first and always had good manners. I also had no issue living with roommates at university. Even though I'm highly independent, I still ask my parents how to do things (like filing insurance claims). I'm grateful I've been set up to be so successful on my own.While I know being an only child means I should feel pressure to have kids or one day <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/only-child-caring-aging-parents-burden-2024-7">look after my parents</a>, they never make me feel I have this sort of responsibility to them. My parents want me to live my life for me, and I'm grateful for that. Though I did feel some pressure growing up to make my family proud and be successful — and I still do — it's my own goals that keep me going, and I'm not comparing myself to anyone else.

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="20138372" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lithuania" source="keywords">Lithuania</keyword> ranks as the <keyword id="23243125" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="happiest-place" source="keywords">happiest place</keyword> for those under 30, but it also has very high suicide rates.</li><li>On the surface, it seems like a paradox. But a closer look reveals a stark generational divide.</li></ul>Domantas Katelė, an official in Lithuania's Ministry of Social Security and Labour, is widely known as his country's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-sick-leave-pto-mental-health-work-from-home-2024-8">"Gen Z"</a> minister. Rings adorn Katelė's tattooed fingers, which he uses to proudly point to his "Politicians make me sick" door sign. At 25, he's the country's youngest-ever deputy minister (he still wears braces), and rarely lets visitors leave his office without taking a selfie. Katelė's portfolio includes <keyword id="20654323" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="youth-affairs" source="keywords">youth affairs</keyword>. "It's a golden age for the youth of Lithuania," he told Business Insider during a visit to Vilnius in August. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-lithuania-happiest-country-young-people-from-local-2024-6">The World Happiness Report</a> backs up his claim, ranking <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-lithuania-world-happiest-country-for-gen-z-millennials-education-2024-6">Lithuania as the happiest place in the world for those under 30</a> earlier this year. But it would be inaccurate to paint <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/brazil-lithuania-move-career-safety-progression-make-friends-2024-1">Lithuania</a> as some sort of dreamland, Katelė adds. After all, it's also Europe's <keyword id="23243126" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="suicide-capital" source="keywords">suicide capital</keyword>. <h2>A paradox?</h2>Though the suicide rates have declined since its independence from the Soviet Union in the 1990s, Lithuania still often leads the European Union in this grim statistic. Between 2019 and 2021, Lithuania had the highest rate of death by intentional self-harm in the 27-country bloc, and, according to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.oecd.org/en/data/indicators/suicide-rates.html">OECD's most recent data</a>, it had the second-highest suicide rate globally. It seems paradoxical: How can <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vilnius-lithuania-happiest-gen-z-cheap-safe-fun-tech-hub-2024-9">a country be great for young people</a> while also being Europe's suicide capital? Katelė lists some of the reasons Lithuania is ranked so highly for young people — some of the<a target="_blank" href="https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/cache/digpub/housing/bloc-2b.html"> most affordable housing</a> in Europe, free education for many Lithuanians, and a growing economy providing ample job opportunities. Walking the streets of Vilnius in the summer, you'll find stylish young people wherever you look — sipping Aperol Spritzes at Old Town bars, lounging by the river in the artsy Užupis district, or skateboarding at the Baltasis Tiltas Skate Park. <div type="image" title="Užupis waterway" height="4284" width="5712" msid="113488780" hostid="261"></div>Although the city is steeped in history — some very dark and recent — it feels modern and vibrant. But when you talk to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-men-women-leisure-spending-habits-differ-report-shows-2024-9">Gen Zers</a> in Lithuania about its preeminence, the reaction is often the same: disbelief. A few said it made them laugh. "I was very surprised, and my friends who are living in Vilnius were also surprised," said Adriana Doroškevičiūtė, 23, sipping on an iced coffee at a café in the capital. "I thought we were depressed," she added. "When we receive the opposite of that, you think, what is happening?" Richard Bogu, 23, was also shocked. It's not that he thinks Lithuania is a bad place for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/young-people-are-developing-money-dysmorphia-2024-7">young people</a>; just that, like others, he has come to associate the country with bleakness. "We are known for being very sad people," he said, adding: "But, slowly, we're going toward being a small, happy nation." <div type="image" title="Richard Bogu sits down at a coffee table" height="4284" width="5712" msid="113488790" hostid="261"></div>Bogu said he feels optimistic about the future, especially for people his age — the tech industry, in which he works, is booming, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.lrt.lt/en/news-in-english/19/2210828/average-wage-in-lithuania-up-12-sodra">salaries are rising</a>, and jobs are ample. "This country gave me opportunities," he said. A key benefit is that most Lithuanians can enter the workforce unburdened by <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/regret-paying-off-student-debt-instead-earning-passive-income-2024-7">student debt</a>, as university education is free for many. Wages are rising rapidly, and the expanding startup sector is <a target="_blank" href="https://unicorns.lt/en/news/lithuanian-startups-are-looking-hundreds-employees-not-just-it-specialists?ref=philomaths.tech">eager to hire</a> young talent. <h2>No country for old men</h2>But while things may be looking up for the younger generation, older Lithuanians don't seem to share the same optimism. According to <a target="_blank" href="https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/databrowser/view/ilc_pw01__custom_12656014/default/table?lang=en">Eurostat's 2023 overall life satisfaction survey of those aged 65 years or over,</a> older Lithuanians are nowhere near as happy as the country's youth. This generational divide bears out in the <keyword id="21021432" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Happiness-Report" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="World Happiness Report" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="World Happiness Report">World Happiness Report</keyword>. While Lithuania ranked first for those under 30, it was 19th across all age groups, dragged down by its 44th-place ranking for those over 60. "If you don't have children or grandchildren to care for you, you're basically done," Bogu said. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retirees-moving-social-security-cheaper-living-healthcare-canada-japan-mexico-2024-9#:~:text=Retirees%20are%20increasingly%20moving%20abroad,Canada%2C%20Mexico%2C%20and%20Japan.">Retirees</a> in Lithuania receive some of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.etk.fi/en/work-and-pensions-abroad/international-comparisons/pensioners-income-level-internationally/average-pensions-in-europe/">lowest pensions</a> in Europe, and have <a target="_blank" href="https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/databrowser/view/tespn060/default/table?lang=en&amp;category=t_ilc.t_ilc_ip.t_ilc_pn">among the lowest median relative income</a> of older people across the European Union. Data provided to BI by Lithuania's Ministry of Social Security and Labour shows that 62% of those who died by suicide in 2023 were over 50, with 8.7% under 30. It's a far starker divide than in countries like the US or UK, pointing to a chasm between the generations. <a target="_blank" href="mailto:grizas.antanas@gmail.com">Antanas Grižas</a>, a clinical psychologist specializing in suicide prevention in Lithuania, said the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-kid-baby-boomer-parents-generational-differences-parenting-lessons-2024-4">generational divide</a> is deeply felt in the country, as well as elsewhere in the former Soviet Bloc. Those who lived through this period faced a double trauma: enduring Soviet rule and navigating the chaotic transition to an independent capitalist nation. Plus, as Grižas points out, psychiatry was sometimes politicized under <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vintage-photos-show-life-behind-the-iron-curtain">Soviet rule,</a> with dissidents being labeled as mentally ill, which has strengthened a generational <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stephen-hays-mental-health-vc-what-if-ventures-addiction-2024-7">stigma over mental health.</a> "The <keyword id="19919711" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gen-Z" source="keywords">Gen Z</keyword>, haven't experienced that directly, " he noted. "So it makes total sense that they have different conditioning and a different mindset." Reports like the happiness rankings are also often based on self-assessments, and Grižas suggests that comparisons may play a key part in the variation between the generations. "The younger generation can easily compare and see the progress that we as a nation made," he said. <div type="image" title="Domantas Katelė in front of his office door" height="4284" width="5712" msid="113488778" hostid="261"></div>Katelė, the "Gen Z" minister, agrees that the positive self-assessments among the youth may have been influenced by their awareness of the hardships faced by their elders. While the previous generation was deprived of luxuries, he said Gen Z can relish the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-gen-z-feels-good-about-money-inflation-jobs-2024-6">freedom to spend</a> the equivalent of $160 on dinner, to vacation abroad, and to participate in democracy. But all four emphasized that their sacrifices and risks earlier in life may be the key to their financial stability down the road.<h2 id="259eb44a-82f4-4e95-8a7c-7a266ae95f9b">Cody Berman, entrepreneur and "passive income expert"</h2><div type="image" title="cody berman headshot blue background" height="3123" width="4164" msid="111730410" hostid="261"></div>Cody Berman, 28, hit <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-worst-national-parks-states-financial-independence-retire-early-fire-2024-7">financial freedom</a> at 25 but has no plans to retire early. He started a handful of businesses in college, some of which failed. He achieved success with his disc golf manufacturing company."I had always thought of 'rich' people being people who made a really high dollars per hour — doctors, lawyers who make $200, $300 an hour," Berman said. "Then I realized that you didn't actually have to trade your time for money on a linear basis. You could trade your time, your energy, your money, for things were going to pay you perpetually, whether or not you're working on them."He got a corporate job as a commercial real estate lender but worked on <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-change-careers-freelancing-side-hustle-earn-six-figures-2024-3">side hustles</a> each morning and night, sometimes working 15-hour days. He left his job after seven months and went all in on freelancing, digital products, blogging, and podcasting.At 25, he made about $400,000 in a year from side hustles, which is when he considered himself financially independent. He saved about 90% of his income, investing most of his money into index funds and his portfolio of 11 rental properties."I'm not in the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/financial-independence-not-retiring-early-millennial-fire-seattle-modest-living-2024-7">FIRE movement</a> for the RE part," Berman said. "I love building businesses."His net worth is about $2.8 million, but he drives a 2015 Nissan truck approaching 100,000 miles. He and his wife live in a one-bedroom property and rent out a four-bedroom property next door. Cutting back on housing costs allowed him to spend almost $10,000 a month in travel, dining, and concerts.Berman co-founded <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://goldcityventures.com/">Gold City Ventures</a>, which helps others launch Etsy businesses selling printables through workshops and courses. Berman said they've seen people quit their corporate jobs and make much more through online selling.<h2 id="4b47ae11-acf6-4bf0-9809-810562964fea">Jubilee Bosch, engineer taking a sabbatical</h2><div type="image" title="Jubilee Bosch at a museum." height="1110" width="1480" msid="111730412" hostid="261"></div>Jubilee Bosch, 26, has worked as an engineer in St. Louis since graduating from college, though with over $190,000 in net worth, she's taking a sabbatical.Bosch was raised in a lower-middle-class family in California by a stay-at-home mom and military father who worked three jobs until starting a house-cleaning business. Though raised to be frugal, she never learned how to invest.After attending community college and a four-year college, she got a mechanical engineering degree and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/earned-thousands-in-scholarships-graduated-college-debt-free-2023-4">graduated debt-free</a> due to merit scholarships, college jobs, and some assistance from her parents.After an internship, she was hired full-time by Boeing, making $64,000. She struggled to transition to the corporate world and burned out quickly, but she kept rising up the ranks, negotiating a promotion and a salary increase to $95,000 a year. Around this time, she read about strategies for reaching <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/financial-independence-retire-early-fire-millennial-income-wealthy-business-owners-2024-4">financial independence</a>, and increased her investments while helping her friends open Roth IRAs.She kept expenses to about $22,000 a year and put most of her savings into the market. She moved into a smaller space with her partner, strategically meal-prepped, and got travel credit cards to lower out-of-pocket flight expenses."I was starting to realize I probably didn't want a traditional career, and I'm sure I'll probably have gaps in my life where I don't have a regular job, so I can roll those over and be tax efficient," Bosch said.She had enough investments and savings to take a year off from work, so she eased up on investing to build a cash cushion. She realized she didn't need to be "hyper-frugal" anymore and could spend on things that mattered to her. She now anticipates retiring between 45 and 55, as she wants to try different career paths."I started to spend more in areas that brought me a lot of joy and realized that some lifestyle creep is worth it and changes the bottom line very little," Bosch said.<h2 id="d1eaf570-5105-4828-808c-817293adc94c">Amber Smith, tech worker-turned-online reseller and content creator</h2><div type="image" title="Amber Smith on a boat" height="2268" width="3024" msid="111730406" hostid="261"></div>Amber Smith, 27, has a net worth of about $250,000 and quit her tech job earlier this year to pursue her side hustles full-time.Smith, who lives in West Des Moines, said her parents sold things on eBay for extra money and stressed the importance of side hustles. She got a full scholarship at college and stumbled into a financial planning internship. She read finance blogs and received training from her manager on how to help others — and herself — best prepare for the future."Here I was in my first real office job, and I thought I could do this for another 40 years of my life, or I could save aggressively now and cut that timeline much shorter," Smith said.After graduating, she did contract work with her local government and a bank. She landed at a startup making $78,000 two years out of college, then transitioned to a financial tech company making about $100,000. However, she was laid off from two jobs back to back, and when she landed in an insurance role, she felt stressed and directionless.She quit her insurance job to grow her side hustles, as she had a large enough nest egg to avoid the office for a few years. She turned down recruiter interviews and focused on monetized <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-ways-to-make-money-as-content-creator">content creation</a> and reselling secondhand clothing.She made $30,000 to $50,000 a year reselling part-time while at her previous companies. She brought in more from brand deals and influencing in the first five months of 2024 than in all of 2023. Content creation hasn't been as consistent, though she made $2,800 once for a brand deal and accepted others paying over $1,000.Though her savings are down this year because of the drop in income after leaving her corporate job, she said she's been smart about her investments and isn't too worried since her net worth continues to grow."I want a way to pay my bills and afford my life, and I want to do that in a way where I'm not stressed out," Smith said. "The peace of it is such a big part, even if I am making less than I was in my insurance job."<h2 id="1e1475eb-db83-4014-8a04-395e1251ab06">Cory Sarkisian, enlisted sailor in the Navy pursuing a financial planning role</h2>Cory Sarkisian, 27, has been an enlisted sailor in the Navy for eight years, saving and investing $375,000 in the process. He and his wife, who have two kids, have been a single-income household for the last six years, moving between San Diego, Hawaii, and Connecticut.Sarkisian had $10,000 saved by the time he joined the Navy, and for his first three years, he didn't have to worry about food or housing, allowing him to save most of his earnings. In 2016, he bought a four-year-old Honda Civic in cash and still drives it.In 2018, he moved out of government quarters and got married. He was given a housing stipend of $2,700 a month, the set amount for someone of his rank, and he and his wife found an apartment for $1,700 a month and kept the rest. He has also never had to pay for healthcare, which is free through the military.In 2020, he began investing in index funds through his Roth IRA and Thrift Savings plan, and he and his wife put 10% down on a condo with a 15-year loan and 1.75% interest rate. He was forced to move to Connecticut two years later, though they sold the condo for $70,000 more than they paid, which they used to start funding their kids' 529 plans, purchase a used car, and put more into brokerage accounts.They've put $180,000 into their Roth accounts, $125,000 in after-tax brokerage accounts, $45,000 in savings, and $21,000 in 529s. With their savings, they traveled to four Hawaiian islands and New Zealand. Sarkisian said he's looking to pursue financial planning after his time in the Navy."We don't feel like we are depriving ourselves," Sarkisian said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Russ Perry was taken aback when his daughter, then 7, asked to do the grocery shopping alone.</li><li>But he weighed up the safety risks and allowed her to complete the chore at Trader Joe's every week.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with dad-of-three <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://russperry.substack.com/">Russ Perry</a>, 41, CEO of a creative design company and writer. It has been edited for length and clarity.Every Friday after school, I give my 8-year-old daughter, Paige, a handwritten shopping list and drop her off outside <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trader-joes-vs-walmart-grocery-shopping-which-is-better-review-2024-8">our local Trader Joe's</a>.She rolls up 20 minutes later with a full cart of groceries, a receipt, and my credit card in her hand — and a beaming smile on her face.It's our weekly ritual, and she absolutely loves it. Although it's a mundane task, the sense of responsibility boosts her self-esteem and independence.It's amazing to see as a parent because those are the characteristics you want instilled in your children.Some friends are shocked when I tell them about it. One said he never lets his kids out of his sight. "Aren't you afraid she'll get kidnapped?" he asked.<h2 id="c1671856-2632-4bc6-bd01-ec3f5ae273bb">My first reaction was to say 'no' when Paige asked to do the shopping</h2>I'm not living my life day-to-day <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elizabeth-smart-kidnapped-14-now-very-protective-of-her-kids-2022-11">worried about kidnappings</a>. I've researched and figured out how misinformed we are regarding the risk.Social media has amplified the danger, making it sound big and scary. But statistically speaking, we exist in a safer, more supportive environment than ever.Paige's shopping expeditions were triggered by the little kids' carts in the front of the store. She enjoyed wheeling them around the place.Then, at the beginning of 2023, when she was 7, she said, "Hey, can I do it myself now?" My first reaction was to say "no." But I rapidly questioned my thinking.A couple of years ago, I read "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.thecoddling.com/">The Coddling of the American Mind</a>." The authors discuss the need to give kids more freedom and independence. They advise parents to unwire their brains to think the world is dangerous.<h2 id="7f9f49db-222d-4b61-8590-92b718cc27e0">I accompanied my kids to the park out of habit</h2>The book was an eye-opener — research-based, factual, and data-driven. It showed how people's fear is overblown about stranger danger and child abduction.I recognized that the everyday parenting habits had crept up on me in escorting my kids to parks and playgrounds. We live in a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/walmart-spark-delivery-driver-gated-communities-smaller-tips-than-apartments-2024-1">family-friendly, gated community</a> in Arizona, but I still watched Paige and her sister, Rees, now 12, when they went outside.The park was minutes from the house, and I accompanied them whenever they wanted to go. I wasn't really harboring these fears that I needed to protect them. It was something I was doing unconsciously.<div type="image" title="A father and daughter sitting on a balcony in front of a sunset." height="3024" width="4032" msid="113502184" hostid="261" sizebytes="396510"></div>So, one day, I let them go unsupervised, and it was their most exciting adventure. It opened up a new level of freedom for them, where their exploration and activities were no longer dependent on my schedule, my energy levels, or my willingness to do it.The rule was that you couldn't leave the house without letting us know where you were. If you go to the park, be at the park. Use other people's phones if you need us. Or we'll find you if we need you.After Paige said she wanted to do the grocery shopping, I thought, "I just need to think about the steps here." I looked at it as something for her to learn. We do the shopping almost mindlessly as adults, but for a child, it's new territory.Grocery shopping has three parts: what you need, where it is, and checking out. We broke it down. For several weeks on consecutive Fridays, I gave her the list and shadowed her to say, "OK, here's what we need." She learned the layout of the grocery store and how to use the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-credit-cards-save-me-thousands-on-travel-2024-8">chip on the credit card</a>.<h2 id="4d14d3ca-122e-4379-bc9f-e8aec93e5c6e">My daughter knows what to say if she is questioned about being alone</h2>Before long, she felt so confident that she did not want me to follow her anymore. I started standing in the front by the flowers. She'd ask employees for help to grab things like yogurts that were out of her reach on the refrigerator shelf. It was adorable.Soon, I began hanging out outside the store. Now, I'll catch up on my email, or when she's been with Rees, I'll run off to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-walmart-and-target-let-customers-keep-some-returns-2021-1">do a return at the store </a>next door. It's created a bit of efficiency.Meanwhile, I've prepared Paige for if or when she gets questioned by staff or other shoppers. She knows to say, "No, my dad's here. I'm practicing grocery shopping by myself." So far, nobody has bothered her. She projects a high level of certainty.<h2 id="1d25c3c2-6a25-48fc-9b7a-2ba87c6a6b01">Paige embraces responsibility and independence</h2>I admire her problem-solving skills and willingness to assert herself if she needs help. Grocery shopping is super fun for her. She wants to do it because it makes her feel responsible.As parents, we can learn to use seemingly mundane tasks in creative ways to teach our kids life and social skills and confidence. It doesn't have to be some huge, complicated project. You can find the simplest ways to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-netflix-tv-show-old-enough-causes-among-parents">say yes to independence</a>.Paige's shopping list includes chicken, pasta, pasta sauce, cereal, milk, and fruit.Still, she usually comes out the door with a few extra desserts we did not plan on. She's rational about it. "Well, Dad," she'll say. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Lithuania topped the World Happiness Report for people under 30, surprising some locals.</li><li>But many Gen Z Lithuanians agree that its capital, Vilnius, is a great place to live.</li></ul>When Lithuania <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-lithuania-world-happiest-country-for-gen-z-millennials-education-2024-6">topped the World Happiness Report</a> ranking for people under 30 earlier this year, it came as a bit of a shock — even for those who live there."It was a surprise," said Valdas Benkuskas, the mayor of its capital, Vilnius, when Business Insider visited in August.But, he added: "We who are living here, we know what a wonderful city it is."<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-moved-to-lithuania-from-us-life-more-stable-balanced-2024-8">Vilnius</a> is Lithuania's most vibrant and populous municipality, a Baltic city of thousands of students, tech start-ups, and greenery. And it has increasingly looked at ways to tailor itself to younger generations.<div type="image" title="Vilnius aerial view with hot air balloons over the top" height="1414" width="2121" msid="113455165" hostid="261" sizebytes="639984"></div>Benkuskas, an older millennial himself, says he's on a mission to attract young professionals from abroad to come and live in Vilnius, and believes that just one visit to the city will be enough to show its appeal."If you spend a week or more here, you can understand that we have a lot of advantages compared with other European cities," he said.<h2 id="547eafc0-acb8-4b87-8296-cc0eee1e34ec">Small city, big advantages</h2><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lithuania-happiest-country-young-people-2024-3">The World Happiness Report</a> ranks countries based on a survey conducted by Gallup, where respondents evaluate the quality of their lives.<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link c-link--focus-visible" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-lithuania-world-happiest-country-for-gen-z-millennials-education-2024-6">Lithuania's under-30s</a> rated themselves 7.76 out of 10, notably higher than their US counterparts (6.392), with locals citing factors to BI such as low rent, free education, and a vibrant nightlife.Ignas Kazlauskas, a 28-year-old who runs a sustainable architecture firm and previously lived in the UK, told BI that Vilnius holds its own against other European capitals.Vilnius offers a stark contrast to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-things-to-do-london-england-what-to-skip-2024-1">London's hustle and bustle,</a> he said — less densely populated, not overwhelmed by tourists, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.eea.europa.eu/data-and-maps/daviz/percentage-of-total-green-infrastructure#tab-googlechartid_chart_11">about half the city</a> is made up of green spaces."The city is pretty laid-back, which is nice," he added, sipping a filter coffee at a trendy Old Town café where other patrons sat reading in the sun-drenched courtyard.For a capital city, it's relatively small — about the size of Denver, which means that everything is within easy reach."You can basically walk across the whole center of Vilnius in half an hour," Kazlauskas said.<div type="image" title="Ignas" height="4284" width="5712" msid="113455183" hostid="261" sizebytes="706564"></div>The city's 90-or-so lakes, ideal for kayaking, and some of the largest forests in the country are also nearby. When the weather allows, Kazlauskas pilots a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-hot-air-balloons-so-expensive-2024-1">hot air balloon</a> as a hobby."People are definitely much happier when they can spend time outdoors and relieve the stress of work, relationships, or whatever," he said.<h2 id="abbe48bb-9ff2-40d6-b100-e1a25defba95">Immigrant inflow</h2>For decades, organized crime and a struggling economy led hundreds of thousands of Lithuanians, especially the young, to move abroad. However, many are coming back, with returning Lithuanians <a target="_blank" href="https://123.emn.lt/en/#immigration">representing a quarter of all immigrants</a> last year.Tens of thousands of immigrants from outside the EU, many from Ukraine and Belarus, are also moving to a transformed Vilnius. The mayor and Lithuania's tourism board want others to follow suit.Part of their pitch is that Vilnius, despite rising housing costs, still remains one of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-find-cheap-accommodation-europe-without-staying-in-hostel-2023-7">Europe's most affordable capitals</a> in which to rent.<a target="_blank" href="https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/databrowser/view/prc_colc_rents__custom_12695593/default/table?lang=en">According to Eurostat</a>, the average monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Vilnius in 2023 was equivalent to $876 — almost half the price of Berlin and about a third the price of London.It can be even cheaper for students. 20-year-old Ričardas Pranculis pays only €65 a month, or about $94, for student accommodation.Even on a student budget, he said he doesn't struggle to make ends meet. "I like living here," he added. "Wages have been increasing, more young people can work and earn money, so more people can try different hobbies."<div type="image" title="Ričardas Pranculis in a park" height="4284" width="5712" msid="113455163" hostid="261" sizebytes="2323342"></div>According to an affordability index by the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.jura.lt/en/news/11934-study-reveals-the-most-affordable-european-capitals-to-live-in-bucharest-tops-list">personal finance website Finasvalp,</a> Vilnius is the fourth most affordable capital in Europe.Elizabeth Avgusta, 24, a senior fund accountant from Indonesia who moved to Vilnius four years ago, said her salary goes a long way.She told BI that it's easy to find meals for under 10 euros, or about $11, though the city also offers plenty of upscale dining options, including four <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/michelin-star-chef-paul-liebrandt-rates-fine-dining-in-movies-2024-6">Michelin-starred restaurants.</a><div type="image" title="Adriana Doroškevičiūtė and Elizabeth Avgusta by a fountain" height="4284" width="5712" msid="113455170" hostid="261" sizebytes="2633294"></div>She also said she appreciates how inexpensive and convenient it is to travel from Vilnius. The airport is just a 15-minute drive away from the center, and several budget airlines operate from the city. With many <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-lesser-known-european-travel-destinations-from-frequent-traveler">European destinations</a> in easy reach, Vilnius is an ideal base.Avgusta said she's considering <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/london-things-never-do-there-from-local">a trip to London</a> soon, having found round-trip flights for 30 euros. And her colleague, Adriana Doroškevičiūtė, 23, had just booked a cheap <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/berlin-travel-guide-germany-trip">trip to Berlin.</a>But Doroškevičiūtė says that even when traveling, she finds herself longing for Vilnius."Whenever I travel, I always want to come back," she said, describing Vilnius — her hometown — as a city that's comfortable to live in and full of things to do.<div type="image" title="Goda Ponomariovaitė stands by a skate park" height="4284" width="5712" msid="113455174" hostid="261" sizebytes="672792"></div>Outside a food hall beside the Baltasis Tiltas, or White Bridge, 22-year-old Goda Ponomariovaitė looks for a place to sit.The area, a vast green space, is teeming with young people — blasting music at the skate park, shooting hoops, and playing beach volleyball on a patch of fake sand.On a sunny day in August, LA's Venice Beach comes to mind. It's also all free to use, probably why it has become such a popular hangout for the city's youth.<div type="image" title="View of the city from the baltasis tiltas" height="4284" width="5712" msid="113455177" hostid="261" sizebytes="1776256"></div>According to Ponomariovaitė, Vilnius has plenty of free or affordable hangout spots. One of her favorites is a former prison, transformed into a vibrant cultural center.It attracts artists and aspiring musicians and regularly hosts free concerts and film screenings."We have so, so many bars and nightclubs," Ponomariovaitė said.However, she says that what sets Vilnius apart from other cities she lived in, like Amsterdam, is how safe it feels."It's very safe, especially for women, to be in Vilnius and Lithuania at night,' she said. "If you are walking, you don't need to worry that somebody will kidnap you or something."On an evening in mid-August, youthful <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/types-of-influencers-on-social-media-micro-macro-nano-classification-2020-1">influencer types</a> lined up outside trendy restaurants, while bars overflowed onto the cobbled streets with businesspeople clinking beer glasses. Meanwhile, an older crowd dispersed after attending a free show in the town square.Vilnius is trying to offer something for everyone — or, as the mayor confidently puts it, everything for anyone."You can find here everything you need for a high quality of life," he added, "and that makes the city attractive."

Later, she went on to receive not one but two graduate degrees.Growing up, I always looked to my great aunt as a shining example of what it means to have a purpose, but not until recently did I consider that maybe this purpose is precisely why she continues to thrive today. <ul class="summary-list"><li>I sent my 9-year-old and my 5-year-old on a sailing camp in Spain. </li><li>Our friends had offered us to stay at their house near Barcelona for two months. </li></ul>The homemade videos came through in quick succession on the camp <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/useful-whatsapp-features-tips-and-tricks-2017-2">WhatsApp channel</a>. Seven tiny sailboats with children manning them dotted crystal blue Mediterranean waters. The children were in pairs, seemingly matched according to age. Then there was my little one, the 5-year-old, who had insisted on tagging along with her 9-year-old brother, and the camp had agreed.It was a blistering summer in the little seaside town of Caldes d'Estrac, an enchanting getaway thirty minutes <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/surprising-things-about-moving-to-europe-from-us-barcelona-spain">outside Barcelona</a>. We were staying there for two months because our friends had generously invited us to their masia, or country home, for July and August. Caldes used to be a fashionable spa town for the Barcelona bourgeoisie in the 1920s and is now known for its thermal baths and stunning beaches. When our friends suggested we put the children in a sailing casale, or summer camp, together at the local seaport, we enthusiastically agreed.<h2 id="92a5c6a4-9d3a-44f4-94c5-2c872f453a15">It was more affordable than camp in the US</h2>There was one catch: How much was this going to cost us, and would we even be able to get a spot? In the US, or at least in California, where we live, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mom-of-two-would-have-pay-8000-for-summer-camp-2023-1">summer camps usually start</a> around $250 per child per week and can run upwards of $1000 for specialty camps. In addition, securing a spot is challenging, with parents already beginning to register for summer camps as early as March.We drove the five minutes down to port Balis in Caldes and went to register in person. It was less than a week from the beginning of camp, yet the experience was seamless. They not only waived the membership fee for the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/is-yacht-club-resort-worth-it-for-families-disney-world-review-2021">yacht club</a>, but the tuition ranged between 170 and 260 euros depending on how long they stayed, and it included lunch.<h2 id="a3d37049-b2ed-4702-a218-3507f6d936cc">They experienced independence</h2>After just the first day, the children came back with exciting and harrowing tales of adventure. They had gone out solo in dinghies with a couple of adults following alongside them in speedboats. They had experienced the thrill of being independent out on the water from the very start and had been forced to problem-solve tricky situations using teamwork to prevent their boats from capsizing or getting stuck. This was especially challenging for my children as they <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moved-to-spain-biggest-cultural-differences-surprised-me-2023-8">did not speak Spanish</a>, but somehow they managed.They, of course, took the necessary precautions of life jackets and basic training, but then they were let loose very quickly and had to learn as they went. It felt as if there was a much more laid-back attitude and push toward personal responsibility than we had experienced in the US. When my 5-year-old refused to stay with the little kids in her age group because she was so attached to her brother, the camp counselors let her tag along and ride in the boats with the older children or inside the speedboats with the adults. I'm not sure that would ever have happened in a California camp, and frankly I'm grateful for it.The rest of the time, the kids learned basic principles of sailing, had free-play in kayaks and SUPs, and ate bowls full of crab and shrimp for lunch. They came back every afternoon exhausted but happy and woke up each morning with enthusiasm, ready for their next big adventure out on the water.

The same monthly rent for a small one-bedroom apartment in Melbourne, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.forbes.com/advisor/au/property/average-rent-price-in-australia/">over $2000,</a> gets me the equivalent of a two-bedroom villa in Bali with a little pool.Local, non-touristy food is also much more affordable. In Australia, I've had to pay about 30% more than the price of food in Bali.I've lived all around the island, from Menjangan in West Bali to Amed on the North Coast, to the Gilis. Outside Kuta, an area <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/indonesia-halts-new-hotel-construction-in-bali-to-combat-overtourism-2024-9">overrun with tourists</a>, visitors can experience what people often call Bali — an Island of the Gods.I was surprised to find gyms and restaurants rivaling Melbourne and coworking spaces that made my old office look like a cheap tech bros warehouse conversion. The coworking spaces I use in Bali are so large and inclusive. They have weight-floating classes, F45 training, yoga, a massive kitchen around a pool, ice baths, saunas, coworking spaces, and meeting rooms.<h2 id="21f21db2-291d-4343-a533-8b761d1a34db">Finding a job that allowed me to work in Bali had its challenges</h2>I initially had a job in Melbourne that required me to be in the office for three out of five days. I was reprimanded for using my annual leave to work from Bali for two weeks. This led me to quit after a year and switch to my current employer, a Shopify optimization agency, in August 2023.My current job understands my remote work lifestyle and allows me to work from anywhere. The tradeoff is that I occasionally have to jump on a 4:30 a.m. meeting.I was a full time salaried employee, but my boss is a legend, and I've negotiated my schedule down to three days a week. I don't need to clock in and out; we're a small, family-friendly team, and there's trust and faith.<h2 id="2c304220-1de2-4e39-b596-32181889acf8">Sometimes tourists can be disrespectful</h2><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/overrated-things-not-to-do-in-bali-i-lived-there-2024-4">Tourist traps</a> like Seminyak and Canggu have become overcrowded and full of drunk, wild, crazy tourists and every other wannabe searching for the perfect wave.There are also the annoying wannabe Instagram models and OnlyFans influencers who stop traffic to take photos in the middle of the road and wear next-to-nothing — disrespecting the Balinese culture. Bali has a conservative culture, and people should dress modestly when in town or shopping at markets. Remote workers and ex-pats like myself value and respect local culture.<h2 id="f4cb9256-dfb5-4e09-938b-2752894f368c">It's been tough to find a work-life balance traveling as a remote worker</h2>One of the hardest things I've ever done was when I road-tripped through America, from Orange County to Savannah, Georgia, and the South. I drove five to six hours daily and had to pull into random restaurants and cafés, hoping the internet worked.I've had significant internet issues. I lived in Albania for a while, and the internet was terrible. I couldn't get any video calls to work. However, a solution I've found is purchasing an e-sim card wherever I travel.<h2 id="5f6e4fad-d8b2-4cd9-bfc5-f85cfd89a102">I miss being close to my family, but I don't miss Melbourne</h2>I don't miss Melbourne much, except for being close to family and friends. An unexpected struggle I've had is making new friends and emotional attachments with other people. However, remote work in digital marketing has allowed me to turn my life into a workcation.I've found a way to balance work and leisure, making every day feel like a beach day.
