Around Christmas, Kelly said, "Don't propose until after I graduate in May!" If she hadn't, I'd probably have proposed by New Year's Eve, and she would have said yes, because we knew we were going to spend the rest of our lives together. We also knew already in those first few months together that we didn't want to be monogamous.For one, we still had so much of our lives to live. I was 25, and she turned 22, 12 days after we met. And while she'd had a bit of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/virgin-first-time-sex-thirtysix-feelings-inadequacy-2024-5">sexual experience</a>, I had none whatsoever. I'd never even been kissed. She was my first for basically everything, and while I had no doubt that I wanted to marry her, I couldn't help realize that marrying her was supposed to mean that she would be my last as well. To be able to talk about the fact that sometimes we got horny, that we masturbated and fantasized and lusted and envied, that what we fantasized about was not the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony, and that our orgasms didn't seem to have anything whatsoever to do with Christ's love. If our partner was able to fulfill one of their dreams, why would we do anything except cheer them on?And then, of course, not all of our crushes were celebrities, and we weren't going to lie about that, either. Obviously, we had crushes on people we knew in real life, people who might return our interest in intimate physical interaction, unlike Justine Henin-Hardenne. So why should we try to prevent that from happening? Everybody says it would be bad, but everybody also said it would be bad to have premarital sex, and premarital sex was fucking amazing. So, why not just let each other have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nonmonogamy-my-boyfriend-date-have-sex-with-other-people-2023-5">sex with other people</a>? Even people who weren't in The Talented Mr. Ripley? When I asked myself that question, I couldn't find any downside. It just seemed like another aspect of the question to which nobody ever seemed to have a satisfying answer: Why is there this special category for behavior involving genitals?<h2 id="ea10c0b3-5e8f-4741-bc34-a3eaf6abdc41">Sex with someone else wasn't a dealbreaker for us</h2>Having sex be the dividing line between OK and not OK seemed so random. Why should it be unbearable if Kelly got drunk and hooked up with someone attractive at a party? Whereas, if she was spending all of her time with that other person, prioritizing them over me, keeping them secret from me, but never having sex with them, that's not cheating? If she creates a profile on OkCupid and puts "Looking for my next husband" in her bio, that's supposed to bother me less than if she went on a work trip and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coworker-dated-broke-up-became-boss-workplace-romance-bad-2024-2">hooked up with a coworker</a> one night? Doing that wouldn't mean she wanted to leave me. He added, "I can't believe what it's become and I'm so happy. The effect has only been turbocharged by a superstar class of rookies and next-generation stars like Clark and Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky.Clark, in particular, has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/caitlin-clark-popularity-broad-appeal-impact-on-womens-sports-data-2024-6">quickly become a household name</a> after her legend grew during a record-breaking career at the University of Iowa. She is a constant presence on ESPN and all throughout the sports-media landscape. Discourse around her stardom and budding rivalry with Reese generates endless online discourse.Fans have shown they're ready to splash out to see her play, and it's raised the profile of the entire league.The average price of WNBA tickets sold through the secondary market, before fees, has nearly doubled since last year — from $49.50 to $91.88, according to data provided to BI by the ticketing technology company Logitix. The data included all games completed through July 17, when the league paused its season for the Olympics.For some fans, it's bittersweet: The mainstream ascent of women's sports is bringing eyeballs, media attention, and endorsement deals to athletes who have historically been sidelined in favor of their male counterparts. But it also has longtime fans worried that the skyrocketing ticket prices will leave them behind.To be sure, the WNBA isn't the only sports league where <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-costs-keep-rising-inflation-goes-down-eggs-tickets-insurance-2024-7#frozen-noncarbonated-juices-and-drinks-1">ticket prices have risen</a> in recent years, as many Americans have flocked to live events of all kinds. However, the WNBA's surging popularity — and its unique fan base — has left fans with a special case of sticker shock."It's a byproduct of the great popularity of the league that's happening right now. And so, there's some drawbacks to it," Rodriguez said. But, he added, "I didn't think I'd see a time where they'd regularly sell out upper-level sections. Now they are on a regular basis."<h2 id="c6ec65aa-4c1a-42ba-ad6b-1f6cbd2f2c2c">With hype comes high prices</h2>The price for L's pass to five Chicago Sky games this season rose from around $300 to about $500. Plus, the team is introducing "tiered pricing," meaning that for partial package holders like L, some games will cost an additional premium to attend.L said many of their friends opted out of renewing their season tickets."It's kind of hard," said L, whose name is known to BI, but withheld over privacy concerns. "I actually made a document of pros and cons of all the different scenarios."Andrew Zimbalist, a sports economist at Smith College, told BI that other fans could be in a similar situation."This is America. We have a market economy and when something becomes more popular and the demand for it goes up, prices go up," he said.David Berri, a sports economist at Southern Utah University who's researched gender issues in sports, told BI that even if a team opted not to raise prices, its tickets would sell for the market rate on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-reselling-tickets-earns-me-tens-of-thousands-per-month-2023-10">resale ticket platforms</a>."Either the team collects the money or the people re-selling the tickets," Berri said, adding, "There isn't a real solution to this issue."Katherine Arnold, an Indiana Fever season ticket holder, has seen the demand firsthand. Like many season ticket holders, she can't make it to every game, so she's sold a few of her tickets throughout the season. She let her ticketing platform automatically set the pricing; tickets she originally paid $65 for ended up selling for between $450 and $750."I actually delisted our tickets because they were selling for so much," Arnold said. He said each league saw low attendance in its first few decades before taking off."I can't really blame the teams, the owners, for taking advantage of the popularity and trying to make additional money off of it," Arnold said. But, she said, it "really sucks," that higher prices can lock some fans out of games.<h2 id="f110fba9-0649-40cb-bda9-dcff61f9e300">Rising prices fuel fan frustrations about player pay</h2>Some fans told BI they're willing to pay more for tickets but want higher prices to translate into higher player pay.The WNBA's annual salaries range between about <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wnba-salaries-explained-2024-4#the-highest-paid-player-in-the-wnba-is-las-vegas-aces-guard-jackie-young-with-a-salary-of-252-450-8">$64,000 and $252,000</a>, compared to roughly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.spotrac.com/nba/cba/minimum">$1 million</a> to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.spotrac.com/nba/cba/maximum">$50 million</a> in the NBA — even though the two leagues' games have recently attracted a similar number of eyeballs. During the entire 2023-24 regular season, the NBA averaged <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Articles/2024/04/29/nba-viewership">1.6 million viewers</a> across its major television partners. The first month of the current WNBA season saw an average of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=854d906b2c55a75f0a812ef8aca1a188c38bcd7da3106113ddd163fc78b1aa5c&amp;postID=669fb79d20eaab25bc213375&amp;postSlug=wnba-ticket-prices-caitlin-clark-indiana-fever-fans-higher-pay-2024-8&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.espn.com%2Fwnba%2Fstory%2F_%2Fid%2F40326422%2Fwnba-earns-record-tv-ratings-1st-month-record-attendance">1.3 million</a> viewers per game.Despite fans' frustrations, it could take some time before the financial rewards are fully realized for players.Under the current collective bargaining agreement, only an <a target="_blank" href="https://iac.gatech.edu/news/item/674387/will-caitlin-clark-star-power-raise-wnba-salaries#:~:text=However%2C%20NBA%20players%20receive%2050,a%20new%20contract%2C%20McDonald%20says.">estimated 10%</a> of league revenue flows through to players' salaries, Berri said — compared to 50% in the NBA. There's been speculation that the players will <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wnba-salaries-explained-2024-4">opt out of the current collective bargaining agreement</a> after the 2025 season, potentially setting the stage for negotiations over <a target="_blank" href="https://frontofficesports.com/wnba-players-not-reaping-leagues-revenue-gains/">topics</a> like the league's revenue-sharing model.Zimbalist said that when league revenues were lower, it arguably wasn't financially prudent for teams to give players a bigger share of the pie. But times are changing."Eventually they should get up in the same 50% range that the NBA players are getting," he said.Despite the pay discrepancy, WNBA players have enjoyed some improved amenities this season. In May, commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced that the league would <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=db131ee7ca339fb60b62a748dbf0f3c43fe78bf1e00b0339a652d5c38397e17c&amp;postID=669fb79d20eaab25bc213375&amp;postSlug=wnba-ticket-prices-caitlin-clark-indiana-fever-fans-higher-pay-2024-8&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.espn.com%2Fwnba%2Fstory%2F_%2Fid%2F40102075%2Fwnba-begin-full-charter-flights">start charter flights</a> for team travel.<h2 id="df260fb3-663c-44b3-b96f-4efe9af9cf75">Wondering if Caitlin Clark fever will last</h2>The Indiana Fever's recently released <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://fever.wnba.com/news/so-far-this-season-fans-are-engaging-with-the-indiana-fever-in-record-numbers">midseason report</a> shows just how pronounced the Caitlin Clark effect has been. A few highlights:<ul><li>100% of season tickets are sold out</li><li>264% increase in total attendance</li><li>1,193% surge in jersey sales from last year</li><li>700% rise in team store transactions from 2023</li><li>225% increase in corporate partnerships</li><li>More social media views than any team in the WNBA, NBA, NFL, NHL, or MLB since April</li></ul>But Victor Matheson, a sports economist at the College of the Holy Cross, told BI that the WNBA's ability to ride the momentum is still up for debate."The real question for the WNBA is whether the Caitlin Clark mania is sustainable," he said, adding that it <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/caitlin-clark-ticket-prices-cheap-indianapolis-indiana-fever-games-2024-7">remains to be seen</a> how many fans who shelled out to see Clark's Fever play will regularly attend games against other opponents.When Indiana Fever games are excluded from the data, the average price of tickets sold through a secondary market, before fees, was $66.69 this season, per Logitix. Whether it's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hot-girl-walk-delaware-florida-trademark-infringement-2023-7">"hot girl walks"</a> or snail mucin-based skincare products, people are deeply interested in maintaining their physical appearance.But $100 serums and cleansers, gym memberships, and whatever <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-trends-viral-videos-influence-over-companies-2023-6">beauty treatments TikTok swears by</a> add up over time.In fact, the industry is so saturated with new "must-have" products that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/deinfluencing-is-the-anti-influencer-trend-rich-with-paradoxes-2023-1">de-influencing</a> (making content about products you wouldn't recommend) has taken hold to help people save money on overhyped brands.Still, Gen Z, millennials, and beyond are investing in their hotness.According to data collected by Business Insider's sister company Emarketer, cosmetics and beauty was the fastest-growing retail segment in the US in 2023, hitting over $94 billion in sales.BI spoke to two working models and one TikToker (and viewed their receipts) to get an idea of the monthly financial cost to be considered conventionally attractive in 2024.<div type="image" title="Adora Mehala" height="1258" width="1290" msid="111968446" hostid="261"></div>Adora Mehala, 23, is a New York-based writer and model who said she likes to keep it simple when it comes to her beauty routine. She doesn't wear a lot of makeup, and she's never gotten injections."For a New York City model, I would say mine is on the lower end" of expensive routines.Instead, Mehala's holy grail product is a snail mucin cleanser that you can order from Amazon for less than $20. It's by COSRX, the same brand that made the bestselling serum that helped Amazon have record-breaking holiday sales.She estimated that her full skincare routine costs around $100 to refill every two to three months.As a model, Mehala is expected to almost always appear groomed with her hair and nails done. For those sorts of beauty treatments, she touches them up herself or she uses an app called <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/model-app-connects-professional-models-with-free-stuff-2019-4">Neon Coat</a>. It connects businesses and brands with professional models for partnership opportunities.By using it, she can get a manicure and pedicure for $40 instead of $100 each visit."For me, a large part of my wellness routine is the kind of food I eat," she said.Her monthly budget is mostly dedicated to buying organic foods to help her feel and look her best as a woman living with polycystic ovarian syndrome. PCOS can cause inflammation and insulin resistance, which Mehala said is lessened by a healthy diet.As such, she spends about $500 each month on weekly trips to the grocery store.With her grocery bill, $35 gym membership, yoga classes, and beauty products, Mehala estimates that she spends about $1,000 every month on her hotness.<div type="image" title="Alyssa Lindaas" height="1544" width="1158" msid="111968445" hostid="261"></div>Millennial model Alyssa Lindaas has spent years perfecting her beauty routine.Lindaas told BI that she's gone through phases of consistent hair salon visits, tanning, and manicures, and she's been in more natural phases that have helped her appreciate her natural beauty."When I turned 30, I remember feeling really insecure about the way that I looked in photos for a while and thinking I need to make serious effort towards being the best version of myself," she said.She's tried a number of treatments to determine what works best for her, including a Botox phase that would cost thousands for one visit to New York City's top doctor. But Lindaas stepped away from facial injections in 2023 to focus on more sustainable, less invasive ways to look and feel beautiful.The technique she found that works best for her is a daily facial massage that she learned from a woman who goes by Anastasia BeautyFascia online. To learn the technique, Lindaas enrolled in a class that costs $300 initially and $50 per month afterwards."It's changed my face so much more rapidly and drastically than any cosmetic procedure I've ever tried," Lindaas said.She spends $100 a month on a gym membership (regularly priced at $250 without a model discount), about $100 on makeup and cosmetics, and she only drinks Evian water that costs about $30 per case.Her biggest splurge comes about every three months. It's a radio frequency treatment that promotes the production of new skin cells, and it costs her a discounted rate of $1,000 per session.Like Mehala, she's also careful about her nutrition and prioritizes foods that help with gut health and her skin.<div type="image" title="Shawn Owens" height="898" width="505" msid="111968448" hostid="261"></div>Shawn Owens is a 28-year-old part-time content creator in Houston, and his TikTok videos are typically dedicated to helping his over 80,000 followers feel great about themselves.His content includes outfit try-on videos, daily affirmations, and his pilates workouts, and Owens said it's consistent with his everyday life. "I feel like I'm not my best self as a person if I'm not taking care of myself," Owens said.Skincare is at the top of his priority list when it comes to wellness. It costs Owens between $200 and $300 each month to refill his products at Sephora. Every four to six weeks he sees his aesthetician for a consultation or $130 facial.When it comes to fitness, Owens said he likes to shop around for the right workout classes. He's held memberships at multiple pilates studios that came out to about $400 in monthly fees at one point, but he's currently saving money by working out at home.His hair is another expense that varies month to month. His products cost about $250 altogether, but he might also spend $400 on a protective hairstyle that lasts two months.During a month when he's consistent with all of his routine, Owens estimated that he might spend $1,200 on his looks."Life is so short. I could not be here tomorrow, and I'd hate to say I didn't enjoy certain things that make me happy," Owens said.Although Owens said he's aware that the economy is "really horrible right now," he believes his monthly maintenance is worth the price."The money will come back," he said.
