<ul><li>In an interview with Business Insider, <keyword id="1477766" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hans-Tung">Hans Tung</keyword>, Managing Partner, <keyword id="685446" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="GGV-Capital">GGV Capital</keyword>, talks about why Indian <keyword id="6362513" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups">startups</keyword> shouldn’t focus too much on conquering the Chinese market. </li><li>Tung, has over 14 <keyword id="2023017" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="unicorns">unicorns</keyword> in his portfolio, including the likes of <keyword id="719382" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airbnb">Airbnb</keyword>, <keyword id="1815769" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="slack">Slack</keyword>, Bytedance, Xiaomi amongst others.</li><li>Tung invested personally in Flipkart and Snapdeal.</li></ul>When Hans Tung, Managing Partner, GGV Capital, was in India last month, it was not surprising to see the Chinese investor mobbed by Indian entrepreneurs waiting to have a few words with him. And why not? Tung, who was an early investor of <keyword id="302749" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alibaba">Alibaba</keyword>, was here looking for his next big investment. “In India, we are looking at opportunities in consumer internet space. Having been a small personal investor in Snapdeal and Flipkart, I have some experience in tracking the rising consumer internet companies. With Unified Payments Interface (UPI), there’s so much growth possible in the consumer internet space here,” Tung told Business Insider. GGV Capital, the fund which started in 2002 manages about $6.2 billion today, with investments in US and China. The fund has now turned to South East Asia, Latin America and of course, India. Tung explained that when the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita of a company crosses $4,000 it brings in higher spending capacity. That’s when industries like e-commerce, live streaming and other forms of user generated content; take off. “India is just under $2000, so over the next 10 years it’s going to be very exciting – India is at the cusp of something big,” said Tung. Tung manages 14 unicorns in his portfolio at GGV Capital including Airbnb, Slack, Bytedance, Xiaomi amongst others. In India, he was an early personal investor in Flipkart and Snapdeal. China bound? Hold on Today, many Indian startups are heading to China. They want to accomplish bigger things in the faster and more developed market. OYO Hotels &amp; Homes, India’s hospitality unicorn, went to China in 2017. And today, the country is its biggest market, bigger than India which is their home turf. “What’s impressive to me is that many Indian companies know what their Chinese counterpart looks like. They have studied the business models in the Chinese internet space,” said Tung. But Tung has a word of caution for these adventurers – speed. “Speed is the biggest thing. When Bytedance came to India, they quickly made progress with their entities – TikTok. They are aggressive. When an Indian company goes to China if you compete in a pure internet space, it’s difficult. OYO has taken an offline hotel business which gives them some advantage. But if you want to go to China, you have to learn to be as fast as a Chinese company is,” said Tung. Tung advises Indian startups to forget China and go after South East Asia instead. “In the SaaS network and service side, I’m not bullish about Indian companies entering China. I encourage these Indian companies to enter South East Asia – it’s an easier market with a lot more advantages,” he said. The Alibaba Lesson Tung was named in the Midas List 2019 by Forbes, which lists venture capitalists with the golden touch for unicorns. But he has also learnt his lessons along the way. They were early investors in Alibaba in 2003, when it was valued at $180 million and they exited when it was worth $33 billion in 2012. Today, the company is worth over half-a-trillion Dollars! “It taught us a lesson. When you see companies that are transformational, the upside is always bigger than you imagine. Ours was a nine-year old investment, everyone was happy with how much it had grown and we thought back then – well how much bigger it can get? No one thought it would be worth half a trillion Dollars,” said Tung. Tung who is on the board of Xiaomi from its early days, and never imagined that it would become one of India’s top brands. “Lot of things have happened over the internet that you wouldn’t have thought was possible,” said Tung. New Delhi, Feb 13 () Education technology start-up Vedantu on Thursday said it has raised Rs 171 crore (USD 24 million) in a round led by global venture capital firm GGV Capital with participation from existing investors. This was in addition to the Rs 299 crore raised by the firm in August 2019. "We are excited to have GGV Capital back us, as a unique VC firm that has backed some of the world's most successful companies, this is a huge validation for Vedantu. We want to further our mission to make this new format of live interactive classes the answer to the current engagement gaps in online education and are very excited about the future," Vedantu CEO and co-founder Vamsi Krishna said in a statement.With this round, total fund raised by the company stands at around Rs 600 crore. Krishna said that the company sees 4.5 times year on year growth in student enrolments and it is now gearing to invest in brand and entering very strongly in new categories of age group 4-10 years beyond current customer segments. "With over 1 million lifetime learners engaged on its online learning platform, Vedantu will explore opportunities to scale impact as it achieves four times growth this year," the statement said. Fred DeLuca ran Subway like a titan, sleeping with franchisees' wives, micromanaging, and penny-pinching. Insiders say he set it up for failure.

Ranjit Singh, the author, is a columnist who writes on internal security issues. In recent years, China has increasingly leaned on Pakistan in South Asia and the Indian Ocean Region to propagate its foreign, economic and military policies through various initiatives like <keyword id="6363059" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="cpec">CPEC</keyword>, <keyword id="387907" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="BRI">BRI</keyword> etc. Michel Berkley of the Belfer Centre at Harvard university has succinctly identified the main interests that China has in Pakistan; firstly, preserve Pakistan as viable military competitor to India; secondly, use Pakistan as an overland trade and energy corridor; and thirdly, use Pakistan's cooperation in severing links between Uighur separatists in Western China and Islamists in Pakistan. Quite clearly, China looks at Pakistan as a supporter, a facilitator and promoter of her national interest. More recently, this relationship has been witnessing a deeper understanding and transforming into a strong military relationship. Yet what defies reason is - why does China refuse to sign an alliance with Pakistan? Historical Background Pakistan began flirting with China after 1962. Ayub Khan realised that the US was not a credible ally, more so when the US agreed to support India after the 1962 Sino-Indian war. Pakistan was unable to capitalise on a weak India. The Treaty of Shaksgam in 1963, wherein Pakistan parted with 5,180 sq km of territory of the erstwhile Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir (now UT of Ladakh), set into motion the beginning of a deep and mutual relationship based almost entirely on the classic policy of balancing - 'my enemy's enemy is my friend'. Over the last five decades, Pakistan has been a reliable ally to China. China has never forgotten the role of former Pakistan President Yahya khan as the messenger between US President Richard Nixon and Mao Tse Tung which resulted in the US-China rapprochement in 1970. Ever since, Pakistan has been a staunch supporter of China in the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC), fending off any anti-China sentiments, especially with reference to Chinese atrocities in Xinjiang. The OIC, a powerful grouping of 57 countries, has surprisingly been a mute spectator to the horrors perpetuated by the CCP on the Uighurs and Sinicisation of Xinjiang. Pakistan has also been an ardent supporter of China in the United Nations, providing unwavering support to China during the crisis in South China Sea and in its 'One China' policy on Taiwan. In return, Pakistan has benefited from the Chinese largesse. As Chinese aspirations of global power gained traction, her expanding footprint in South Asia made Pakistan the centre of its South Asia policy. Pakistan supported Chinese entry as an observer in SAARC which was reciprocated by Pakistan's entry into SCO. The flagship Belt &amp; Road Initiative (BRI) of Xi Jinping had become the cornerstone of Chinese economic policy, coupled with a military strategy of increasing its global footprint in Asia, Africa and Europe. Among the six sub-initiatives that comprise the BRI, the most successful has been the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which is entirely routed through Pakistan and the UT of Ladakh. The $64 billion CPEC has already become an issue of contention within Pakistan. Falling short of targets and wracked by incessant attacks on Chinese engineers, staff and assets by Baloch nationalists and Gilgit-Baltistan based local groups, China has put pressure on Pakistan to ensure its success. Pakistan has raised a 15,000-strong para-military force to protect the CPEC from marauding Baloch and its tribes of GB who see CPEC as a loss of their sovereignty, dignity and aspiration. Much to the dislike of the Chinese, the CPEC has also become synonymous with corruption with the head of the CPEC, a Pakistani General, getting involved in corruption scandals directly implicating him and his family. Attacks by Baloch nationalists have forced China to deploy Private Military Contractors (PMCs) to protect its projects. Recently, China has replaced its top UFWD official as the new envoy to ensure the success of the CPEC and salvage 'its reputation'. China has also replaced the US as the main arms and equipment supplier to Pakistan. In the last decade, Chinese share in the Pakistan's military rose from 13 per cent to 63 per cent while that of the US has almost come to naught. The entire nuclear programme of Pakistan is China supported, thanks to the AQ Khan scandal who stole technology for China in return for nuclear weapons. Pakistan's missile programme is entirely China centric with its arsenal being direct copies of the Chinese Nodong and Dong-Feng series. The tank factory at Taxila, the JF-17 fighter aircraft joint production, the upgrades of the T-59 &amp;T-69 series tanks, supply of AEW&amp;CS aircraft, F-22 P destroyers of the Pakistan navy, Air Defence guns, radars etc. are all of Chinese origin. The recently inaugurated Beidou Navigational System (BNS) has been provided to Pakistan's armed forces replacing the GPS. All this ensures that the Pakistan Army is now dependent on China for arms supplies, spares and relief/upgrades in perpetuity. Chinese and Pakistani militaries exercise regularly and have a robust calendar of annual engagements aside from military exchanges in courses, training, visits by military delegations, naval port of calls and joint seminars by think-tanks. Gwadar is China's next base in the Indian Ocean. It is all set to accommodate a Chinese population of 500,000 in a special international port city, which will include Chinese naval personnel and expeditionary forces like the PLA marine force. Gwadar, by its location, provides a strategic outpost to China to monitor the Straits of Hormuz which has the US Third Fleet based in Bahrain and Indian Navy's Western Command on its western seaboard. Despite all these mutual interests, China has still not signed an alliance with Pakistan. That clearly sends two messages to the environment: * China does not want to make any binding commitment to Pakistan. Financial, military equipment, diplomatic support is a 'Yes' but direct intervention and sending Han Chinese body bags for Pakistan's cause is a big 'No'. * China does not trust Pakistan as a reliable ally. The Chinese continue to be cautious about the all powerful Pakistan Army and the chaotic political landscape in Pakistan. Many Chinese argue that China does not believe in the alliances, yet Chinese have signed a binding treaty with North Korea in 1961. And they are fully committed to that alliance. This clearly amplifies one bitter truth. No matter how deep the relationship, there is still a measure of 'trust deficit' in the relationship. One cannot grudge the Chinese from holding back because Pakistan's chequered history is replete with flip-flops that have branded Pakistan as unstable and wavering. In sum, Pakistan is at best a tool in the Chinese grand strategy of becoming a world superpower by 2050. By creating dependence in perpetuity on China by way of land, unpayable loans, infrastructure development, industry and Chinese weaponry and spares, Pakistan is totally subservient and beholden to China. As Hussain Haqqani very vividly describes this relationship: "For China, Pakistan is a low cost secondary deterrent to India... for Pakistan, China is a high value guarantor of security against India." In effect, Pakistan has just become China's newest 'vassal'. LyftUber's recent struggles - including the resignation on Tuesday night of CEO Travis Kalanick - appear to have given a big boost to its archrival, Lyft.Even as Uber's market share shrinks, more people are taking more rides with Lyft. And the smaller ride-hailing company, known for its pink mustache symbol, is seeing more people openly identify as Lyft customers. Among them: Lisa Jackson, Apple's vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives. When asked at a tech conference Wednesday which ride service she uses, Jackson <a href="https://twitter.com/sharatibken/status/877582949641732096">said</a>, "Lyft all day." Uber's US market share fell from 84% at the beginning of this year to 77% at the end of May, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lyft-is-gaining-on-uber-in-the-us-2017-6?utm_source=twitter.com&amp;%3Butm_medium=referral&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=buffer&amp;utm_content=buffer8012d">according to</a> research firm Second Measure. Meanwhile, Lyft's bookings were up 135% year-over-year in April, according to PYMNTS.com."When it comes to their market share, the damage has been done," said Michael Ramsey, a research director at Gartner. "On the other side of Uber making these mistakes, Lyft has been the foil to them in that the impression they leave is that they're a better run company with better values," he added. "You have to give them credit."Uber's business has been rocked by a series of scandals and controversies since since the beginning of the year when the company broke a taxi strike in New York, and in response, critics launched a #deleteuber campaign. Things only got worse after February 19, when former Uber engineer Susan Fowler <a href="https://www.susanjfowler.com/blog/2017/2/19/reflecting-on-one-very-strange-year-at-uber">posted about</a> her experiences at the company, alleging pervasive sexism and that she was sexually harassed by a manager. In the wake of the scandals, numerous executives have left Uber, the company fired more than 20 employees, and its board agreed to adopt some 47 new policies and changes to its workplace that were recommended by an outside law firm. And most recently, Kalanick stepped down.Lyft saw a more than 60% increase in passenger activations in the seven days following #deleteuber, a company representative said. In all, Lyft tallied 70.4 million rides in the first quarter. That was up 142% from the same period a year earlier. It was also up 36% just from the fourth quarter of last year, before all the drama started at Uber. When Uber <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-app-gets-tips-2017-6">announced</a> Tuesday that it would allow some drivers to accept tips in its app, Lyft took to Twitter to take a shot at its archrival. Painting itself as the more driver-friendly company, Lyft noted that riders have been able to tip drivers through its app for nearly five years. Lyft's strategy of painting itself as the friendly alternative to Uber has been effective, because it's so easy for customers to change which ride hailing service they use, Ramsey said."There's almost no switching cost between Uber and Lyft," Ramsey said. "If you have enough memory on your phone, you have both apps. You get on the app and see if there are cars near by.""It's a comparable service," Ramsey added. "All it takes is you saying 'I'll choose Lyft because I've heard bad things about Uber,'" Ramsey said. Of course, Uber's main advantage is its size. While Lyft's service is now available in 350 cities, it only operates in the US. Outside of the US, where Uber has often struggled to contend with entrenched competitors and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-has-disabled-its-app-in-paris-2016-2">local regulations</a>, Kalanick's departure and Uber's broader struggles likely won't have much of an impact. Uber is more or less off the radar in China since it <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-china-merges-with-didi-chuxing-2016-7">merged</a> its business there with Didi last August in a $35 billion deal that ended Uber's standalone presence in the country.
