<ul><li>In an interview with Business Insider <keyword id="412368" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jawed-Habib">Jawed Habib</keyword> told how he focused on small towns in India to become popular. </li><li>His company is aggressively working on plans to expand into more cities and sell more products and franchisees - even in times of slowdown. </li><li>Habib has conquered the needs, aesthetics and pocket size of Tier II and Tier III cities. </li></ul>At the salon in <keyword id="6413695" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="khan-market">Khan Market</keyword> in Delhi, a lady in her sixties sprang up excitedly as hair stylist Jawed Habib walked up to her. While she is being prepped, her husband whipped out a phone to shoot a video. 	 The recession-proof business The stylist who gained fans and clients across ages - now owns the $30 million Jawed Habib Hair &amp; Beauty. He is also known to have given former president and missile man <keyword id="6402687" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="APJ-Abdul-Kalam">APJ Abdul Kalam</keyword>, his trademark hairdo.

 Habib came from a long line of hair dressers as his father and grandfather were in the business too. But Habib never wanted to be one. Yet, he is now thriving in his family business for the last 25 years. His company is aggressively working on plans to expand into more cities and sell more products and franchisees - even in times of slowdown. “Slowdown or not, everybody needs a haircut,” he said. Unlike in other sectors, Habib is hopeful of maintaining his margins and turning good profits. “There’s no recession in my business. It is safe. I don’t really run a salon. I sell franchisee. Every year we sell around 100-120 franchises. We have done it in the past and the growth has been similar in fact much better. My growth has never gone down, it has only been higher,” he said in an interview with Business Insider.

 Hair and beauty sector accounts for 40% of the massive <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/magazines/panache/the-yoga-commerce-boom-in-india/articleshow/47755678.cms">₹490 billion</a> wellness industry of India - at ₹196 billion. In a largely unorganized beauty services market, Habib is one of few popular chains which is keen on smaller towns as well as cities - that has expanded his horizons. Habib has conquered the needs, aesthetics and pocket size of Tier II and Tier III cities. He knew that the path to nurture a relation with the Indian middle class, will bear fruit. Today his approach has taken his brand to 110 cities in 24 states with 864 salons. He aims to cross the 1,000 mark in salon in FY20. “The knowledge in smaller towns in India is very simple. They have questions like which shampoo to use or should grow my hair long or not. I gave this information to people and they loved it,” he said. Habib believes that he has reached out only to a mere half a percent of vast middle class of India — at 300 million. “It still has a long way to go,” he said in his book, Attitude is Everything by SAGE Publications India. A haircut with every seminar Apart from his celebrity value and hobnobbing with who’s who, Habib also created a brand for himself in a unique manner - seminars. He sponsors at least 50 seminars a month across cities to spread the word about his business. At first, only 15-20 people used to attend his seminars but soon it increased to 400 to 500 people. In addition, he provides a haircut in every new city he visits. “All these have helped me in moving myself and my brand. In fact, over the years, we noticed that immediately after a visit, we get franchisee enquiry calls from that city,” he said. Habib also wants to expand overseas. Presently, he owns two salons in Bangladesh and one in Dubai. Another global salon is in works in Nairobi, Kenya. He is also looking to target Africa and the United Kingdom. "I am happy to join the BJP as I have seen the changes brought in the country by Prime Minister Modi in the last five years. I think nobody should be ashamed of their background, when the prime minister is proud to state that he was a 'chaiwala' then why should I be ashamed of calling myself a 'nai' (barber),” Habib told the news agency, ANI, soon after his appointment. Calling himself a barber is a political statement, coming from 55-year old Habib. He studied French literature in Delhi and went on to build a salon empire in the country with outlets in over 24 states and 110 cities in India – a total of <a href="https://jawedhabib.co.in/company-profile/">846 </a>shops if those in Singapore and London are counted. On the other hand, being a barber in India allows at best a humble life for most. In India, the Nai community, whose members have traditionally been barbers, are members of the ‘Other Backward Class’. A striking history Jawed Habib’s political connections are way older than his candidature with the BJP. Habib’s grandfather used to work at the President’s office as a barber. He was also the official barber for Lord Mountbatten and Jawaharlal Nehru, the country’s first Prime Minister. His father, too, was the official stylist at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President’s residence. Habib’s fame and success ensured that the family’s clout goes beyond its profession. Now, his political debut may enhance it further.

"My 10-year old son was in urgent need of hair cut. Idecided to cut his long hair myself at home. It may not be aperfect job, but I was able to handle it to acceptable level,said Mahendar Noogooria, a journalist with a vernavular dailyhere. Several netizens also shared pictures and videos of theirskills with a pair of scissors. Fareed Ahmed, a 35-year-old IT professional and wildlifephotographer, said he tried to cut his hair by himself andended up leaving it in a mess. "Finally, my father came to my rescue, took a trimmer andreshaped it," he said.Prabhakar Kumar, a self-employed from Anand Nagar, tookupon the job of haircut for himself and also for his two-year-old son. "In view of summer it was getting irritating for my sonwhose hair had grown and covered his ears. I took out mytrimmer and did hair cut not only for my son but also formyself. My son liked it and gave a smile after the "perfect"haircut," Kumar said.But, not all want to take the scissor themselves andthere have been instances of people sacrificing their Frenchbeard like Sravan Kumar, a 35-year old musician. I used to get it trimmed every week. Some days ago Itried to do it myself, but couldnt. So I completely removedit. I will trim it once the lockdown is over, Kumar saidsmearing his smooth cheeks. On the other side, the barber community has been hit hardthough they admit they cannot afford to work considering theirown safety and that of their customers. Working President of Telangana Nayee Brahmin Aikya Vedika,the apex body of barbers in the state, Hari Prasad said theassociation members were following the government orders ascompliance was necessary to contain spread of the coronavirus. It will be dangerous for all of us as we will have tohandle people from all walks of life. Hair cutting or shavingis done with close proximity of the customer. We will beservicing several customers a day. So it is not advisable toopen shops at this juncture and do our job," he told . According to him, if salons are kept open there is achance that people with travel history might also come. "Thats why we asked our community members to follow thelockdown procedure, he added. Association president Maddikunta Lingam Nayee said about15 lakh members of the community in the haircutting professionneed government support as they are losing livelihood fornearly 40 days. He also requested the government to waive power bills forsalons besides extending financial support to them to overcomethe present situation. Admitting that there were cases of violations by somebarbers who keep open their shops, he appealed to the policenot to file cases against such people and create awarenessamong them.
