<ul><li>FMCG giant HUL’s shares reported a decline of over 6% on Thursday.</li><li>This comes a day after the company reported a 2.33% decline in consolidated net profit in Q2.</li><li>The stock tanked 6.59% to ₹2,483.95 on the NSE.</li></ul>Shares of FMCG major <keyword id="20002610" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hindustan-Unilever" source="keywords">Hindustan Unilever</keyword> Ltd (HUL) on Thursday tumbled over 6% after the firm reported a 2.33% decline in consolidated net profit for the second quarter ended in September. The stock tanked 6.59% to ₹2,483.95 on the NSE. The stock emerged as the biggest laggard among the Sensex and Nifty firms during the morning trade. Hindustan Unilever Ltd on Wednesday reported a 2.33% decline in consolidated net profit at ₹2,595 crore for the second quarter ended in September 2024, impacted by moderation in demand from the urban market. The company had logged a net profit of ₹2,657 crore in the July-September quarter a year ago, HUL said in a regulatory filing. However, revenue from product sales was up 2.36% at ₹15,703 crore in the September quarter, from ₹15,340 crore in the year-ago period, HUL which owns power brands such as Surf, Rin, Lux, Pond's, Lifebuoy, Lakme, Brooke Bond, Lipton and Horlicks said. "In the September quarter, <keyword id="21419477" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FMCG-demand" source="keywords">FMCG demand</keyword> witnessed moderating growth in urban markets, while rural continued to recover gradually. In this context, we delivered a competitive and profitable performance," HUL CEO and Managing Director Rohit Jawa said. HUL reported an underlying sales growth of 2% and underlying volume growth of 3%. Total expenses were at ₹12,581 crore in the September quarter, up 3.03% year-on-year. HUL's total income, which includes other income, was up 2.14% to ₹16,145 crore in the September quarter of FY25. Addressing an earnings call, HUL CFO Ritesh Tiwari said, "Two thirds of our business we do in urban areas, and one-third we do in rural areas … we are seeing growth in the urban market moderating. We are seeing rural growth recovery is gradual … it impacts all the categories that we have." On the outlook, he said, "In the near term, we expect demand trends to be stable with no further acceleration in pace of growth." In this context, Tiwari said, "Our focus remains on driving competitive volume-led growth, while continuing investments behind our brands and strategy priorities … If commodity prices remain where they are, we expect a low single digit price growth in the near-term." Hindustan Unilever shares tumble over 6% post Q2 results

<ul><li>Shares of fast moving consumer goods company fell 5% after the company reported lower than expected volume growth along with cautious commentary.</li><li>The company reported 9% year-on-year growth in net profit to ₹2,187 crore as against ₹2,009 crore in the same quarter last year.</li><li>Further, the company said they remain cautiously optimistic about demand recovery.</li></ul>Shares of consumer goods company <keyword id="6365619" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindustan-unilever" source="Orion">Hindustan Unilever</keyword> (HUL) fell as much as 5% on Tuesday after the company reported its September quarter earnings. Although the company reported 9% year-on-year growth in net profit to ₹2,187 crore as against ₹2,009 crore in the same quarter last year, investors were disappointed on lower than expected volume growth. The company delivered 4% year-on-year volume growth in the July-September quarter lower than estimates of 5-7%. Food segment that includes products like Horlicks, Kissan, Bru, Kwality Wall’s saw a slowdown in revenue growth. Food segment grew only 7% in the September quarter as against 12% in the June quarter. Hindustan Unilever attributed the dull growth in the food segment to reasonably high sales in the previous quarters. <div type="image" title="HUL cchart" height="900" width="1200" msid="87136921" hostid="261"></div> The company has declared a dividend of ₹15 per share in this quarter. Adding to it, the company gave a cautious remark on the demand recovery. “Looking forward, we remain cautiously optimistic about demand recovery,” said Sanjiv Mehta, chairman and managing director of HUL. Meanwhile, muted consumer sentiment with rising inflation bothered the (fast moving consumer goods) FMCG major. “September quarter witnessed a sequential improvement in trading conditions, albeit remained challenging with unprecedented levels of input cost inflation and subdued consumer sentiments,” added Mehta in a statement to stock exchanges. September Quarter 2021: Robust broad-based performance in a challenging environment HUL delivered a strong performance in this quarter with Domestic Consumer Growth of 11% and Profit After Tax (PAT) growth of 9%. Performance was broad based with all 3 divisions growing competitively. Business fundamentals remained strong with more than three-fourths of the business gaining market share and penetration. Home Care: Home Care grew 15% driven by high double-digit growth in Fabric Wash. Household care continued to perform well and grew on a strong base. As per its financial records, the FMCG giant spent Rs 4,737 crore on advertising in FY21. Broad-based performance Growth in the quarter was competitive and profitable with reported turnover growth of 34% and Profit after tax growth of 41%. Domestic consumer growth* was at 21% with underlying volume growth of 16%. Health, hygiene and nutrition forming c.80% of business grew in double-digits for the third consecutive quarter, while discretionary and out-of-home categories improved sequentially. Home Care: Home Care growth at 15% was enabled by a strong recovery in Fabric Wash. Household Care continued its strong performance delivering double-digit growth. Liquids and Fabric Sensations continue to outperform benefitting from robust market development initiatives. Beauty &amp; Personal Care: Beauty and Personal Care grew 20% with Skin Cleansing, Hair Care and Oral Care delivering high double-digit growth. People are, however, hoarding these products to a very large extent and hence it is difficult to meet demand,” an Edelweiss estimate had said earlier. The biggest food company in India With its merger with Glaxosmithkline Consumer Healthcare (GSK), Hindustan Unilever became the biggest food company in India. According to reports, GSK is also planning to sell 5.7% stake in HUL worth $3.7 billion. Through the merger HUL acquired Horlicks from GSK for ₹30.5 billion. However, after the deal was sealed, GSK has decided to dump the $3.9 billion worth HUL shares that it received as part of the deal. New Delhi, Mar 13 () Hindustan Unilever on Friday said its board will meet on April 1 to declare that the merger with GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare (GSKCH) will be effective from that day. Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) and GSKCH have received approval from the Mumbai and Chandigarh bench of the National Company Law Tribunal, respectively for the merger, HUL said in a regulatory filing. "In this regard we further wish to inform you that in accordance with the terms of the scheme, a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Company is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, April 01, 2020, to take on record the sanction of the Scheme by the Mumbai NCLT and Chandigarh NCLT and to declare the Scheme effective from April 01, 2020," it said. New Delhi, Feb 26 () FMCG major Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) on Wednesday said the Chandigarh bench of National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has approved the scheme of amalgamation for the merger of the company and GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare (GSKCH). On November 6, 2019, the Mumbai Bench of the NCLT had sanctioned the scheme and the order was subject to sanction of the Chandigarh Bench of NCLT. "In this regard, we wish to inform you that the scheme has now received the sanction of the Chandigarh NCLT," HUL said in a regulatory filing. The effective date of the scheme will be communicated upon being finalised in accordance with the procedure specified by the Mumbai NCLT and Chandigarh NCLT, it added. The all-stock deal, which is valued at ₹317 billion ($4.5 billion), will see HUL take over GSK’s consumer healthcare operations and merge them with itself. Its offer to exchange 4.39 of its shares for every one share in GSK’s subsidiary reportedly beat out all-cash <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Companies/tlyjL7ec2HRAyB5r0vjRCK/Nestle-Unilever-Coke-make-bids-in-4-billionplus-GSK-Indi.html">bids</a> from the likes of Nestle, ITC and Coca Cola. The businesses being divested, which include health drinks Horlicks, Maltova and Boost, brought in a total of £406 million (₹36.4 billion) in sales in the nine months ended September 2018. Interestingly, the 140-year old Horlicks will be owned by HUL’s parent company, Unilever, and it will have to pay royalties on sales. The acquisition also includes GSK’s 82% holding in its Bangladesh unit as well as branding rights to products in various other markets. HUL will also distribute GSK’s over-the-counter and oral healthcare products like <keyword id="135142" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="crocin">Crocin</keyword> and Sensodyne for a period of five years as part of a preliminary move into the pharmaceuticals space. In exchange, GSK will get a 5.7% stake in HUL, which is valued at ₹230 billion, and hence, become the second-largest shareholder in the company. However, after the deal is completed at the end of 2019, by which time HUL will be India’s largest publicly-listed food and refreshments company, GSK plans <a href="https://www.gsk.com/en-gb/media/press-releases/gsk-to-divest-horlicks-and-other-consumer-healthcare-nutrition-products-to-unilever/">to sell its stake </a>in HUL in what is expected to be a very profitable cash-out. New Delhi, Apr 23 () Global FMCG major Unilever on Thursday said its growth in India has been hit by both slowing market and the coronavirus-forced lockdown that led to a halt in production and shipping activities for a number of days.The Anglo-Dutch firm has also withdrawn its growth and margin outlook for 2020, citing the impact of the pandemic and subsequent containment measures taken by authorities and a shift in demand patterns of the geographies where it operates.Though the FMCG major has witnessed upswings in sales of hygiene and in-home food products, the crisis has affected particularly its food service and ice cream business, Unilever said in its trading statement for the first quarter ended March 31.Unilever also witnessed a major impact on the businesses in China and India, two of its major markets where restrictions were imposed by the respective governments to contain the spread of COVID-19. "China declined as a result of the downturn in food service, out of home ice cream and retail sales during the lockdown. Growth in India was impacted by both the slowing market and the lockdown implemented at the end of March, which stopped production and shipping for a number of days," Unilever CEO Alan Jope said in a statement.He further said, "Underlying sales growth was zero per cent with 0.2 per cent from volume and negative 0.2 per cent from price. Developed markets grew 2.8 per cent whilst emerging markets declined 1.8 per cent."According to Jope, demand patterns are changing. "As the crisis hits countries around the world, we see upswings in sales of hygiene and income food products, combined with some household stocking, and near cessation of out of home consumption which is particularly affecting our food service and ice cream business," he said.The FMCG major is adapting to new demand patterns and are preparing for lasting changes in consumer behaviour, in each country, as it moves out of the crisis and take steps towards recovery, according to the Unilever CEO."We will continue to adapt throughout this crisis. However, the unknown severity and duration of the pandemic, as well as the containment measures that maybe adopted in each country, mean that we cannot reliably assess the impact across our markets and our business. We are therefore withdrawing our previous growth and margin outlook for 2020," said Jope.While talking about the Indian market, where it operates with subsidiary Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL), he said "seven days of national lockdown at end of Q1" affected the trading, adding that there was supply chain disruption following the lockdown."Lockdown measures in India commenced from mid-March, followed by a strict national lockdown, severely limiting the flow of goods and leading to a decline in South Asia. Indonesia and Vietnam performed strongly although the Philippines declined across divisions as restrictive social measures were put in place," said Unilever.However, it also added that the Indian market had slowed even before the strict lockdown began at the end of March.The company said its tea segment business declined, impacted by India and out of home channel closures. "The strategic review of our tea business is ongoing".Skin care business also took a hit amid lockdown conditions. "Vaseline continued to perform well, with mid-single digit growth, and we launched anti-bacterial hand cream in the UK as well as a new Pro Derma Clinical range in China. The Prestige portfolio was impacted by health and beauty channel closures in many markets. Whilst hair care (segment) grew in the USA, the lock-down impacted the portfolio in China and in India," it said.Deodorants grew in mid-single digit, with strong performances from our RexonaClinical range and Dove deodorants. From February itself they had anticipated a slowdown due to China shutting down, but a lockdown is not what they had expected. “We started figuring out as the demand for sanitizers and health essentials shot up. By the second half of March, our focus was on how to maintain business continuity and how to ensure employee safety while making sure the website was running and the call centre too was operational,” Agarwal told Business Insider. Quick thinking IndiaMart has always had ‘medical’ or healthcare as a category, but within the initial weeks of the coronavirus pandemic, Agarwal realised that it would become an on-demand category. And they were quick to turn things around. “We started calling up suppliers, did some innovative thinking. We called up bike helmet suppliers and asked them that since you have a helmet shield can you make face shields and they happily agreed. We went to undergarment manufacturers and asked them to make face masks. But this variety of products available also pumped their revenue, because then companies weren’t just coming on the platform for finished products but also to discover certain elements like bottle caps, elastic among others. Agarwal believes this also keeps them different from their rising list of <keyword id="2771895" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="b2b-ecommerce">B2B ecommerce</keyword> competitors – Amazon, Alibaba, Walmart wholesale, TradeIndia, ExportersIndia.com among others. “Our target is also different. The other companies focus on the top 2000 products, which are generally branded, in the FMCG sector. That’s not what IndiaMart is going after. From steel bars to trucks and everything in between is what IndiaMart sells,” he said. Balancing their costs and their customers’ too In the beginning of April, their revenues were completely down as most of their customers' business had hit pause – their buyer traffic was down by 50%. “Only one-third of our sales used to be from online or telecom,” said Agarwal. So, they went around looking at places where they can cut costs. They turned to automation of many processes and deferred plans that would have burnt a hole in their pocket. Agarwal said that while many employees offered to give up salaries, they didn’t lay off anyone. “We are a slow hiring company, so we didn’t want to fire anyone,” he said. But that wasn’t all. They also had to prepare for their customers, who were in a similar business situation. “We offered moratoriums to customers who said they won’t be able to pay,” he said. As the economy opened up, things started to look better and because of their initiatives, Agarwal says customers and buyers both saw value in IndiaMart. The new driver – tech IndiaMart, over the recent years, has turned to technology to add layers to its offerings. “We are enabling seller and buyer interaction with a CRM and have also become a price discovery platform for many buyers in India. Even if they don’t end up buying from India, we have been able to democratize prices for buyers,” he said. Out of their total expenses, 20% of it goes into investing in products and technology, while out of the 4500 employees, 20% of them are in product and technology.
