Lenovo led the global traditional PC market (including desktops, notebooks, and workstations) in the first quarter of 2021 with 24.3 per cent share, as the worldwide shipments grew 55.2 per cent (on-year), according to an <keyword id="6377157" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="idc">IDC</keyword> report. <keyword id="2547931" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HP-Inc">HP Inc</keyword> was second with 22.9 per cent PC market share, followed by <keyword id="3346453" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dell-Technologies">Dell Technologies</keyword> at 15.4 per cent share. PC shipments reached 84 million worldwide in the January-March period, a modest 8 per cent decline from the fourth quarter of 2020. While sequential declines are typical for the first quarter, a decline this small has not been seen since the first quarter of 2012 when the PC market declined 7.5 per cent sequentially, according to IDC's ‘Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker' showed on Saturday. "Unfulfilled demand from the past year has carried forward into the first quarter and additional demand brought on by the pandemic has also continued to drive volume," said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC's Mobile Device Trackers. "However, the market continues to struggle with setbacks including component shortages and logistics issues, each of which has contributed to an increase in average selling prices," he added. <keyword id="6354427" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="apple">Apple</keyword> with 8 per cent market share (by shipments) was fourth while Acer Group with 5 per cent came fifth. The continued resurgence in the PC market as well as increases in average selling prices (ASPs) have primarily been driven by growth in gaming, the need for higher performance notebooks in the enterprise, and an increase in demand for touchscreens within the education segment. Ryan Reith, program vice president with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers said that the ongoing shortages in the semiconductor space only further prolong the ability for vendors to refill inventory and fulfill orders to customers. "We believe a fundamental shift has occurred around the PC, which will result in a more positive outlook for years to follow. All three segments — business, education, and consumer — are experiencing demand that we didn't expect to happen regardless of many countries beginning their ‘opening up' process," Reith noted. Component shortages will likely be a topic of conversation for the majority of 2021. "The more important question should be what PC demand will look like in 2-3 years," Reith said. New Delhi, Nov 14 () The PC market in India grew 15.8 per cent year-on-year with shipment touching 3.1 million units in September quarter, research firm IDC said on Thursday.
The shipment volume, which includes desktops, notebooks, and workstations, stood at 2.7 million units in the July-September 2018 period, IDC said.
"This growth was mainly driven by the second phase of shipments to the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Ltd (ELCOT) under its ongoing initiative of free distribution of laptops in the state. Also, as Windows 7 is near to its scheduled end in early 2020, corporate and enterprise users accelerated their upgrades to Windows 10," it added.
Lenovo led the tally with 28.5 per cent share in September 2019 quarter, followed by HP (26.4 per cent), Dell Technologies (19.7 per cent), Acer (11.9 per cent) and Asus (5.3 per cent).
The commercial segment witnessed 39 per cent year-on-year growth as vendors shipped a total of 1.7 million units in the quarter under review. Excluding the ELCOT deal, the commercial segment grew 15.7 per cent annually, driven by strong traction for both desktops and notebooks.
The consumer segment, however, was down by 4.2 per cent from the same quarter a year ago. It grew 49 per cent sequentially driven by multiple mega online festivals and Diwali offers.
"As we see consumers shifting entertainment and content consumption to smartphones, PCs are becoming a conscious purchase in India. Consumers are comfortable to wait for discounts and offers while looking to buy or upgrade their PCs," IDC India Associate Research Manager Jaipal Singh said.
Looking at opportunities, branded PC gaming is a growth area in the next few quarters, he added.
"Although India's gaming market is dominated by mobile phones, gamers have already started preferring PCs for a more immersive experience as their best alternate," Singh said.
The desktop category saw a 10.6 per cent y-o-y growth in its shipments, mainly contributed by Windows 10 refresh buying from the banking sector.
Notebooks grew 18 per cent annually on the back of education deals as well as growth in both corporate and SMB segments, as these enterprises scaled up their purchases for Windows 10 migrations. SR SR BAL

This is the first time that AU India has been organised following the success of the <keyword id="2502778" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Autodesk-University">Autodesk University</keyword> Extension (AUx) event held in Mumbai last year.
