The company patented a design for such a smartphone with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) and the patent was approved last month, reports LetsGoDigital. The HP patent describes a technology for applying flexible screens to mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets or computers. Although similar to the folding method of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, the HP patent describes it as 'using a movable hinge that can be folded in different positions' and is not limited to folding in half. However, it is not necessary that HP would launch such a product in the market. In 2016, HP Inc unveiled Elite x3, a 5.96-inch touchscreen device that ran Windows 10 Mobile and supported Continuum, a feature that allowed the device to be attached seamlessly to a separate screen, mouse and keyboard. The world's most powerful locomotive manufactured by French giant Alstom along with the Madhepura Electric Locomotives Pvt Ltd, capable of running at maximum 12,000 HP, joined operations of the <keyword id="6355455" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-railways">Indian Railways</keyword> on Monday, officials said. "Bolstering Prime Minister Narendra Modiji's vision of Make in India, first WAG12B (12000 HP) loco departed from Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay station in Uttar Pradesh today. Powerful and capable of high speed, the locomotive is a significant addition to the Indian Railways," tweeted Union Railway Minister <keyword id="6355222" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="piyush-goyal">Piyush Goyal</keyword>. According to Railway officials, WAG12B started its services from Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay railway station (Mughalsarai Junction) in Uttar Pradesh on Monday. The train departed from Deen Dayal Upadhyay station at 2.08 p.m. in long haul formation for Dhanbad division of East Central Railway, consisting of 118 wagons which travelled from Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction to Barwadih via Dehri-on-Sone, Garhwa Road stations. The locomotive is capable of taking heavy consingment of freight and will be used on the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC). "Alstom is pleased to start delivery of the electric locomotives to Indian Railways. Commencement of induction into the IR fleet, testifies our commitment towards the country. This is a revolutionary product which will be faster, safer and eco-friendly. Also, it is scripting a new chapter for India's sustainable mobility journey and we are happy to be partnering in this," said Alain Spohr, Managing Director, Alstom India and South Asia. A railway ministry spokesperson said that it was a proud moment for Indian Railways, as it became the sixth country in the world to join the elite club of producing high horse power locomotives indigenously. "It is the first time that a high horse power locomotive has been operationalised on broad gauge track in the world. The locomotive has been produced under Make in India programme. The Madhepura factory is the largest integrated greenfield facility built to the highest standards of quality and safety with production capacity of 120 locomotives and spread across a massive 250 acres." Railway officials said that the locomotive is capable of running on railway tracks with conventional over head wire (OHE) lines as well as on DFC with high rise OHE lines. The official further said that the locomotive has air-conditioned driver cabs on either side. "The locomotive is equipped with regenerative braking system which provides substantial energy savings during operations. These high horse power locomotives will help to decongest the saturated tracks by improving average speed of freight trains," the spokesperson said. Touted as the largest <keyword id="44749" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Foreign-Direct-Investment">Foreign Direct Investment</keyword> (FDI) projects of the Railways, the Ministry of Railways and Alstom came together in 2015. An agreement worth 3.5 billion euros was signed to manufacture 800 electric locomotives for freight services and its associated maintenance. These locomotives are state-of-the-art IGBT-based, 3 phase drive, 9000 KW (12000 horse power) electric locomotives. The locomotive is capable of maximum tractive effort of 706 kN, which is capable of starting and running a 6000 T train in the gradient of 1 in 150. The locomotive with twin Bo-Bo design having 22.5 T (tonnes) axle load is upgradable to 25 tonnes with design speed of 120 kmph. The locomotive will be used on the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) for the faster movement of goods, especially coal and iron ore. The railway official said that the project started in 2018 and Modi inaugurated the project on April 10, 2018. The prototype locomotive was delivered in March 2018. Based on the test results having design issues, the complete locomotive including bogies was redesigned. The new design of locomotive has been inspected by Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) at Madhepura factory and cleared for dispatch from factory in November 2019, the official said. He said RDSO has conducted oscillation trials at various speeds upto 132 kmph and the locomotive has passed oscillation trials successfully. The scores range from 0 to 10, with higher numbers indicating that it's easier to repair the device.Apple's iPad Pro 9.7" and iPad 5 both scored a 2, while the MacBook Pro 13" and Retina MacBook received a 1. Apple products do not come with repair guides, and the company does not sell spare parts to third party repair shops, the report said. iPad screens are also heavily glued to the rest of the device, greatly increasing the chances of damaging the glass during a repair. In Macbooks, the processors, RAMs, and flash memories are soldered to the motherboards, making these parts difficult to access for repair or replacing.Gary Cook, Senior IT Sector Analyst at Greenpeace USA, told Business Insider that these design decisions have huge implications for the environment. "Today [June 29] is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/first-phone-on-sale-ten-year-anniversary-2017-6">the 10th anniversary of the iPhone</a>. These things all fit in our hands and seem like they don't have a very big impact, because they're so small," said Cook. "But the impact is quite significant, both in terms of the chemicals used, the amount of energy that goes into manufacturing these products, the e-waste at the end-of-life ... And the repair-ability of the device ends up being critical."In contrast to iPads and Mac Books, the iPhone 7 received a 7 out of 10. In recent years, Apple has designed its phones to be easier to open, Cook said.Apple spokesperson Alisha Johnson told Business Insider that Apple is addressing the eco-waste problem. Customers can visit Apple stores for repairs, and the company launched a recycling program, called <a href="https://www.apple.com/recycling/">Apple Renew</a> in 2016, she said."Highly-integrated design allows us to make products that are not only beautiful, thin and powerful, but also durable, so they can last for many years. When repairs are needed, authorized providers can ensure the quality, safety, and security of repairs for customers. And when products do reach end of life, Apple takes responsibility for recycling them safely and responsibly," Johnson said. "We're also pioneering a closed loop supply chain where products are made using only renewable resources or recycled material to reduce the need to mine materials from the earth."Other tech products much higher than Apple devices. The Fairphone 2, known for its modular design, got a perfect score. Compared to the other phones, it has the most user-friendly battery, camera, screen, and microphone for replace-ability, since you don't need any tools to open it. It didn't work, and now Microsoft is taking a step back to refocus on the stuff that the company is really, truly doing well.<h2>Blessing in disguise</h2>What it boils down to is this: Thanks to some smart, aggressive work at appealing to niches with its Surface business, and because it's doing so well at putting its best stuff on other platforms, Microsoft is making the very best of its situation.Microsoft's phone business may be a shambles, but the company's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-panos-panay-history-microsoft-surface-2016-8">overall hardware business is stronger than ever</a>. The Microsoft Surface Pro tablet and Surface Book laptop are a profitable, $4-billion-plus business every quarter. Soon, the much-anticipated <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-announces-surface-studio-2016-10">Surface Studio PC</a> will join that lineup. So, yeah, maybe Microsoft isn't winning in smartphones, now or ever. And it seems increasingly unlikely that even the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-surface-phone-delayed-2017-2016-4">long-rumored "Surface Phone"</a> will reverse the trend, should it ever actually hit the market.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Microsoft</div></div></div>But if the goal is to get Windows to lots more places, then the company's current Surface strategy makes a ton of sense. And there's no more distraction for Microsoft of having to worry about your own operating system, too.So let Microsoft keep working on Windows 10 Mobile as a technical project, and keep the dream alive for Microsoft's handful of remaining smartphone fans. Microsoft's dream of Windows on phones is as good as dead - and that's great for Microsoft

Just ask Joanna Daneman, a Delaware woman who has achieved Amazon's Hall of Fame recognition 12 different years, making her the #1 Hall Of Fame reviewer of all time.
She's part of the company's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/vine/help" target="_blank">elite, invitation-only Vine program</a>, which means that she gets boatloads of new products sent to her for free.
"It's almost an embarrassment of riches," Daneman tells Business Insider of the trove of stuff Amazon sends her at least once a month. 
Amazon started the Vine program seven years ago to help increase its number of useful reviews. Its only stipulations are that participants need to write reviews of the objects they receive and they can't resell the products afterwards. Companies pay a fee to Amazon to participate. 
Since joining Amazon, Daneman has written nearly 3,000 reviews, 97% of which other Amazon users <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/A1IU7S4HCK1XK0/ref=cm_cr_tr_tbl_hof_name" target="_blank">have deemed exceptionally helpful</a> and says that she averages one post a day, though sometimes it's much more.
Although she isn't the most prolific reviewer on Amazon (<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/AFVQZQ8PW0L/ref=cm_cr_tr_tbl_hof_name" target="_blank">another Hall of Fame</a> member has written more than 30,000), Daneman's reviews are insightful, easy to read, full of detail and personal touches, and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/vine/help" target="_blank">occasionally funny</a>.

Daneman receives a wide range of free products through Vine, from the super-expensive to the strange, including strobe lights, green tea powder, a "zombie dissection kit," memory cards, knives, a printer, a soldering iron, baby toys, and a Japanese kitty litter system. Often they're things that Daneman never would have thought to purchase herself otherwise.
When Daneman spoke to Business Insider she had just recieved a welder, which she planned to test out on a friend's farm over the weekend.
The system used to be that Vine Voices would receive a list of goods to choose from every month, but now, Daneman says, she constantly has a queue of new products that she can browse. She says can't even guesstimate the value of what she's recieved over the last seven years, but it is a lot.

But Daneman doesn't always give our five stars. She says she has recieved a lot of really good kitchen stuff, but this strawberry slicer didn't make the cut:

Daneman admits the Vine program has kindled jealousy in reviewers who aren't part of it, who will sometimes ding a review just because a "Vine Voice," as members are called, wrote it. Daneman insists that just because she gets products for free doesn't mean that she'll give them glowing reviews, and that there is no obligation to do so from Amazon or the companies who supply the products. 
Daneman's fast-paced review-writing habit started in the early 2000s. She was living in Germany at the time and fell in love with Amazon because it was the easiest way for her to get her hands on English books. Daneman is a voracious reader - whipping through 30 or 40 books a month - and since shipping costs so much, she'd carefully pick through reviews before ordering a book.
She always found community reviews to be the most helpful, so she started writing some of her own as a way to give back. Her fun, frequent, and thorough reviews attracted a following, and when she came back to the states, she actually had several people come visit her. She's still friends with several other reviewers. 
Daneman kept her habit going because she loves to write, but doesn't like to journal. She works as a financial advisor at Edward Jones and doesn't write for her job, so she keeps her skills sharp through Amazon. Before Edward Jones, she was a product manager at HP.
"Amazon created a community," Daneman says. "Wherever else you might buy things online, you're not talking to anybody. On Amazon, you're yakking away to a bunch of people."Disclosure: Jeff Bezos is an investor in Business Insider through his personal investment company Bezos Expeditions.

Silicon Valley Is Living Inside A Bubble Of Tone-Deaf Arrogance

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Seph Lawless</div></div></div>Peruse the headlines, and you'll find hundreds of articles predicting the "next Silicon Valley." Pundits claim that the growing cost of living in the Bay Area is driving businesses away to more affordable regions that are rich in tech talent such as Austin, Phoenix, Boulder, and Miami.But try as they might, these "hubs" won't ever beat Northern California at its own game - the area will continue to dominate information technology because of its unique arbitrage of thought, culture and research.But that's okay, because striving to replicate the success of the Bay Area limits us by imposing an arbitrary constraint on our imagination. After all, does Silicon Valley represent the pinnacle of success in human innovation, or are there regions that have the potential to evolve into something even greater? <h2>"Tech" is Dead</h2>There's a strong argument to be made that the rate of innovation in the traditional "high-tech" space (e.g. ecommerce, social media, computer hardware, and telecommunications) is slowing. Much of this is due to the fact that we are arguably reaching a point of saturation in the consumer internet. According to <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2015/06/22/consumers-spend-85-of-time-on-smartphones-in-apps-but-only-5-apps-see-heavy-use/">TechCrunch</a>, smartphone users spend 84% of their time on just five apps. Moreover, almost two-thirds of consumers fail to download any apps in a given month. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image">Tiller PartnersSmartphone User's Number of App Downloads Per Month.</div></div></div>This problem has been confounded by a disturbing trend that Tim Wu pointed out almost five years ago in his book The Master Switch. In essence, Mr. Wu analyzed long-term trends in information technology and found that disruptive technologies tend to become closed and consolidated over time. Indeed, it's helpful to remember that AT&amp;T was once considered a scrappy startup challenging the entrenched Western Union telegraph monopoly. So while Google, Amazon, Apple and Facebook may have once been agitators to the ancien régime, they're now incumbents with the capability to crush or control potential threats to their business models. With the exception of the blockchain, companies touting even seemingly transformative technologies such as mixed reality or chat bots may find it hard to achieve escape velocity from an orbit made ever tighter by the increasing influence that incumbents have over digital distribution. That's not to say that many great companies won't continue to come out of Silicon Valley, but we may need to look elsewhere if we're expecting to see the same level of disruption that accompanied the late 90s and early aughts. <h2>Long Live Tech</h2>In his book The Third Wave, Steve Case argued that we're reaching an inflection point where "the term 'tech-enabled' will start to sound as ludicrous as the term 'electricity-enabled.'"Indeed, the next big thing in "tech" probably isn't "tech," but rather the application of intelligence to the broader marketplace.A handful of developments seem on pace to create the framework for our connected future; areas such as artificial intelligence, big data and IoT are likely to be a cornerstone in every industry. To the chagrin of George Orwell, in fifty years much of our work may be done by robots that can think and learn, and are connected to each other. As such, disruption is no longer limited to ecommerce, software, the consumer internet, or social media, and looking for the next "Unicorn" may be myopic. Instead, we might want to ponder the next TRILLION dollar company. After all, if Amazon disrupted retail, and Facebook disrupted media, who is going to disrupt energy, manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare and finance? In other words, why look for the next Uber when we should be looking for the next Apple?<h2>How Detroit Could Beat Silicon Valley at Its Own Game (Seriously)</h2>In one frontier technology, Detroit may hold several competitive advantages over Silicon Valley.Although predictions range significantly, many research organizations forecast that autonomous cars will be the first place that the public sees true Artificial Intelligence, with widespread adoption by 2030. This has led to a burgeoning war between Silicon Valley and Detroit, with many assuming the city that personifies urban blight can't compete with the likes of Elon Musk and Larry Page.But critics may be missing several distinct advantages that the motor city holds over Silicon Valley. In particular: it's becoming a highly-attractive location for STEM talent, it has a rapidly expanding (and hungry) tech scene and it has a localized industry cluster that may be difficult for Silicon Valley to replicate.<h2>Paris of the Midwest<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Rob Ludacer</div></div></div></h2>Silicon Valley owed much of its initial success to three factors: a highly-educated population, relatively low cost of living and large pool of talent in STEM fields. Like the Bay Area in the 70s, contemporary Detroit shares many of the same advantages.First, the Detroit-Ann Arbor area boasts a highly-educated population. According to <a href="https://wallethub.com/edu/most-and-least-educated-cities/6656/">WalletHub</a>, nearby Ann Arbor is ranked #1 on the list of most educated cities, ahead of both San Jose (#3) and San Francisco (#7). Second, the cost of living in the area is below the national average and significantly below Silicon Valley.Finally, Detroit is becoming much more attractive for STEM talent. Not only has STEM job growth <a href="http://www.mistempartnership.com/cm/dpl/downloads/content/491/STEM_Talent_in_Michigan.pdf">outpaced traditional by 6x</a>, the city is midst of the kind of cultural revival that serves as catnip for millennial technologists. Once known as the "Paris of the Midwest" - Detroit is intent on regaining its former glory with a hip new culinary scene bolstered by a combination of cheap housing and an influx of restaurateurs and chefs, and a revitalization of the local fashion industry led by entrepreneurs such as Tom Kartsotis (founder of the uber-chic Shinola). As one resident noted in the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/03/fashion/the-young-and-entrepreneurial-move-to-downtown-detroit-pushing-its-economic-recovery.html">New York Times </a> "it feels like TriBeCa back in the early days, before double strollers, sidewalk cafes and Whole Foods…there is a buzz here that is real, and the kids drip with talent and commitment, and aren't spoiled." Indeed, although Detroit's population declined over the last 10 years, the city also saw a <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/03/fashion/the-young-and-entrepreneurial-move-to-downtown-detroit-pushing-its-economic-recovery.html">59% increase</a> in the number of young, college-educated residents in the same time period. In addition, the startup scene is Michigan is much more diverse than the nation as a whole. According to <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/eilenezimmerman/2016/05/19/58-million-in-funding-for-detroits-venture-backed-startups/#763644c21dc9">Forbes</a>, 28% of the VCs in Michigan are women, people of color or LGBT. <h2>"Detroit Hustles Harder"</h2>In 2008, fashion entrepreneurs Joseph "J.P." O'Grady and Brendan Blumentritt of Aptemal Clothing LLC released a t-shirt line with the phrase "Detroit Hustles Harder" proudly emblazoned across the front. The slogan caught on like wildfire because it captured an underlying entrepreneurial spirit - one pioneered by original Detroit-based disruptors such as Henry Ford.Indeed, Detroit is hustling. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image">Tiller Partners</div></div></div>It's startup scene has seen remarkable growth over the last 10 years: According to the <a href="http://michiganvca.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/2016-MVCA-Research-Report.pdf">Michigan Venture Capital Association Annual Report</a> , there were 36 VC firms in the Detroit area in 2015 with $5.3 billion in AUM, an increase of over 100% in the last five years. In addition, the amount of investment and the number of startups receiving investment has been steadily climbing. On top of the local VC scene, Detroit also has a thriving tech startup scene. According to a <a href="http://www.recode.net/2015/2/9/11558748/whats-driving-the-next-detroit">ReCode</a> series written last February, there are 100 tech startups in Detroit alone, and 248 tech companies were started in Michigan in 2014. In fact, 2014 represented the first time that startup activity in Detroit outpaced that in nearby Ann Arbor.These developments have been bolstered by billionaire and Detroit native Dan Gilbert, founder of Quicken Loans, who has invested heavily in the local startup scene in an effort to rebuild Detroit's blight into a trendy, bustling movement.Finally, Motor City has seen significant interest from the Silicon Valley elite. For example, Amazon, Alphabet and Facebook all have offices in Detroit. In an article in <a href="http://www.cio.com/article/3001690/startups/could-detroit-become-the-next-silicon-valley.html">CIO magazine</a>, Peter Faricy of Amazon explained that "Michigan is a rapidly growing technology corridor and we're eager to bring the incredible local Detroit talent to Amazon." <h2>Revenge of the Big Three?</h2>Much of Silicon Valley's success can be traced to its industry cluster in information technology. Research and funding from Stanford and Berkeley combined with local giants such as HP, AMD, Intel, Xerox, Cisco and Apple to form a synergistic "melting pot" for information technology. As many experts predict that autonomous cars may be the first instance of widespread adoption of Artificial Intelligence, an argument can be made that Detroit has a similar advantage with both the University of Michigan and the "Big Three" automakers.The Wolverines, in particular, are taking a strong interest in artificial intelligence. The school boasts the second highest R&amp;D expenditure in the nation, and its research is boasted by the Artificial Intelligent Lab, which houses ten distinct research groups. In addition, Toyota recently <a href="http://www.engin.umich.edu/college/about/news/stories/2016/august/accelerate-artificial-intelligence-research">launched</a> a multi-million dollar partnership with the University of Michigan to develop AI. Perhaps more important, however, is the influence of Ford, GM and Chrysler on the development of the field.Often misjudged as anachronistic, the leadership in today's Detroit is anything but - all three CEOs are relatively young and two have held the post for fewer than three years. As GM CEO Mary Barra recently declared to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/now-its-detroits-turn-to-rescue-silicon-valley-2016-8">Business Insider</a>, "We are trying to disrupt ourselves; we're not trying to preserve a model of yesterday." <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Bill Pugliano/GettyGM CEO Mary Barra</div></div></div>This zeitgeist has manifested in an infatuation with being the first to develop autonomous vehicles. General Motors recently paid over $1 billion to acquire Cruise Automation, a startup dedicated to creating the sensors and technology necessary to build an autonomous vehicle. The company also invested $500 million for a 9% stake in Lyft, perhaps due to Lyft's (and Uber's) vision of eventually replacing their independent contract-based workforce with autonomous transport. Ford, meanwhile, recently announced a $75 million investment in Velodyne, whose LiDAR technology is helpful for the 3D mapping, sensing, and security that autonomous vehicles will require. The company has also acquired SAIPS, an Israeli machine learning firm, and in July Ford announced that would provide $6.6 million in seed funding for Civil Maps.Meanwhile, Alphabet and Fiat Chrysler have announced a partnership to jointly test autonomous technology in minivans, and Alphabet is <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/lianeyvkoff/2016/05/25/google-expands-detroit-presence-with-self-driving-tech-center/#2a304dab697f">opening a 53,000 square foot self-driving car development</a> center near Detroit in Novi, MI. Finally, it seems like the "Big Three" have the backing of "Big Government" - in Michigan at least. In December, Governor Rick Snyder signed <a href="http://www.recode.net/2016/12/9/13890080/michigan-dot-self-driving-cars-laws-automakers">four bills</a> to regulate the development and sales of autonomous vehicles, making it the first state to do so. Ironically, this news was announced days before San Francisco shut down Uber's self-driving service. <h2>Predicting the Future</h2>Due to the limited scope of this article, we chose to focus only on Detroit as an emerging hub of innovation. That said, our research has identified several additional geographies with the potential for exponential growth including Baltimore, Pittsburgh and the former "Rust Belt".Furthermore, while we've tried to use data to identify cities that have the potential for progress, it's helpful to remember that these are, at best, guesstimates plagued by numerous uncertainties. As such, we'd love to hear your thoughts as well: Are we completely missing some additional element -a 'secret sauce' held by Silicon Valley - that will continue its dominance in all things well into the future? How will the media, finance and energy clusters in Los Angeles, New York and Houston play into all of this? Can they overcome their high relatively cost of living? Can the relationship between IoT and industry revitalize the former "rust belt"?Are there other "hidden gems" that we've missed? For example: could the research triangle dominate healthcare? Who will win the agricultural race, Silicon Prairie or Stockton? Could Madison, WI solve the water problem?
