HDFC Bank Q3 net at ₹12,259 cr

Mumbai, Jan 17 () Market gauges Sensex and Nifty gave up early gains to close on a flat note on Friday as investors moved to the sidelines amid concerns that the Supreme Court ruling on telecom AGR issue might further aggravate stressed assets problem in the banking sector.
 At the closing bell, the BSE benchmark Sensex was up 12.81 points or 0.03 per cent at 41,945.37. The index also marked its new all-time high of 42,063.93 in intraday trading, before surrendering some of its gains.
 The broader Nifty, however, settled 3.15 points or 0.025 per cent lower at 12,352.35. The NSE barometer too touched its life-time intraday peak of 12,385.45 in early deals before losing momentum.
 During the week, the Sensex advanced 345.65 points or 0.83 per cent; while the Nifty rose 95.55 points or 0.77 per cent.
 In a session marked by high volatility, gains in Reliance Industries offset losses in other heavyweights HDFC, ICICI Bank and TCS.
 On the Sensex chart, Bharti Airtel was the top gainer, rallying 5.47 per cent, after experts said the Supreme Court's rejection of a review of its order that put Rs 1.47 lakh crore liability of past dues on telcos, will weaken Vodafone Idea's ability to compete in the Indian market; in turn, providing an opportunity for Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio to gain market share.
 Shares of Vodafone Idea plunged 25.21 per cent.
 Ahead of their quarterly earnings, Reliance Industries and HCL Tech advanced up to 2.79 per cent, while TCS fell 0.79 per cent.
 Heavyweight HDFC dropped 1.23 per cent.
 In percentage terms, IndusInd Bank, SBI, HDFC, ICICI Bank and L&amp;T were among the top losers.
 On the contrary, Bharti Airtel, Reliance, Sun Pharma, HCL Tech and Maruti Suzuki emerged as major gainers.
 Sectorally, BSE bankex, metal, finance, capital goods and IT indices fell up to 0.78 per cent. While energy, telecom, healthcare, consumer durables, power and auto indices rose up to 1.79 per cent.
 In the broader market, BSE midcap and smallcap indices rose up to 0.54 per cent.
 "As anticipated mid and small caps are outpacing the broader market... Main indices are impacted by Supreme Court verdict on AGR, having an effect on telecom and banking sectors which are already facing NPA problem. The pre-budget rally has been very solid on a month-on-month basis, market may consolidate in the short-term and take cues from the actual budget and on-going results," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said.
 The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed review petitions filed by telecom companies against its October 24, 2019 order that asked for inclusion of non-telecom revenues for calculating statutory dues such as licence fee and spectrum usage charge.
 Dues, which total to Rs 1.47 lakh crore for 15 telecom companies including Airtel and Vodafone Idea, as per the October order, have to be paid by January 23.
 According to traders, domestic investors are awaiting directional cues from key corporate results for cues amid concerns over higher bank non-performing assets and a spike in retail inflation.
 Bourses in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul ended higher. European markets also started on a positive note.
 Brent crude oil futures rose 0.36 per cent to USD 64.86 per barrel.
 The Indian rupee depreciated 15 paise to 71.08 per US dollar.
 "Global markets witnessed a strong rally as easing trade tensions and promising economic data buoyed the sentiments. Indian markets too ended the week with strong gains especially in midcaps and small caps. Midcap and small caps have significantly outperformed the Nifty... Market ends flat; banks slide on NPA concerns after top court's AGR ruling

Mumbai, Jan 15 () Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty took a pause after a four-session record run on Wednesday, as higher bank NPAs in ongoing quarterly results weighed on banking stocks coupled with a caution ahead of US-China trade deal.
 At the closing bell, the BSE gauge Sensex was down 79.90 points, or 0.19 per cent, at 41,872.73; while the NSE barometer Nifty was 19 points, or 0.15 per cent, lower at 12,343.30.
 Both indices -- Sensex and Nifty -- had closed at their life-time high levels for the second day in a row on Tuesday.
 IndusInd Bank was the top loser in the Sensex pack, dropping 5.44 per cent. Other major laggards were Infosys, SBI, PowerGrid, Tech Mahindra, Bharti Airtel and HDFC Bank.
 In contrast, Hero MotoCorp, Titan, Maruti, Asian Paints, M&amp;M, TCS, Bajaj Auto and Ultratech Cement closed on the winning side.
 Sectorally, BSE bankex, finance, telecom, energy and teck indices fell up to 0.70 per cent.
 On the other hand, consumer durables, realty, auto, utilities, metal and healthcare indices rose up to 1.37 per cent.
 In the broader market, BSE midcap and smallcap indices outperformed benchmarks, rallying up to 1.04 per cent.
 Analysts are of the view that overall market sentiment was also affected by comments from a top US official that the trade truce with China, set to be signed on Wednesday, does not include a deal to roll back tariffs imposed on most Chinese goods.
 Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services Ltd, said, "After the solid pre-budget rally, market is getting a bit sceptical post higher than expected NPA numbers in the recent Q3 banks results and very high consumer inflation which may stay for another month or two. Market would watch the Q3 results &amp; actual budget, for further direction."
 Bourses in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul ended on a negative note, while exchanges in Europe were off to a tepid start.
 On the currency market front, the Indian rupee settled 5 paise higher at 70.82 per US dollar.
 Domestic investors were also concerned about possible stagflation in India due to low growth and high inflation in wake of recently released government data, traders said.

Mumbai, Apr 14 () HDFC Chairman Deepak Parekh on Tuesday said he sees 20 per cent drop in property prices of unsold residential inventory, and advised developers to offload their stocks to enhance liquidity position.He also cautioned developers against over leveraging, which can affect their businesses in the long-run."I think the prices of real estate have to come down and will come down. I believe Naredco's estimate is between 10-15 per cent. I feel one must be prepared for even 20 per cent," Parekh said while addressing representatives from the real estate sector through video conferencing, organised by real estate developers associations - Naredco and Credai.He said the drop in prices will be for existing flats that are already built but the developers are sitting on those stocks as they are waiting for prices to increase later."Compromise, compromise and compromise. Be willing to offload some of the unsold inventories at whatever price. You need liquidity," Parekh advised the real estate developers.He said developers should not equate the private equity (PE) commitment or sanction line of credit available with them to liquidity in today's time."No one who has sanctioned loans to you or given a PE commitment today will agree to disburse post COVID-19. They will review it again, they will change their mind and they will relook at the big issues," Parekh said.He said it will take at least six months for the demand in real estate sector to pick-up.According to him, the current liquidity challenge which developers are facing is due to over leverage. "Be careful of the perils of leverage. I have repeatedly said that leverage borrowing is a double edge sword. In good times it amplifies your profit, but in bad times it kills you," he said.Parekh said developers should use the Reserve Bank of India's three-month moratorium option on repayment of loans as the last resort."Use the moratorium as the last resort because it is pushing the can down the road and there is a cost to it. Before opting for a moratorium, know what will be your strategy after 90 days when the moratorium is lifted. Don't let it slip into NPA once the moratorium is lifted," he said.He said for the potential home buyers, who have got job security or cash flows, this is an excellent buying opportunity as prices will come down.Parekh said corporates are likely to postpone buying commercial real estate at least till the time they have clarity on the situation."Let me reiterate that commercial real estate requirements will not evaporate. This work from home may be possible to some extent but we are not going to see the entire workforce migrate to a work from home culture on a permanent basis," he added. HV BALBAL

HDFC chairman sees 20 pc drop in property prices

Mumbai, Jan 28 () Ahead of the presentation of the Union Budget 2020-21, largest pure play home financier HDFC on Tuesday pitched for a one-time loan recast for realty projects.
 Its Chairman Deepak Parekh said lenders are not able to write new loans for projects because a new borrowing by an entity which is already a non performing asset, becomes an NPA on day one.
 The comments come amid difficult times faced by the realty sector, which has forced the government to announce a Rs 25,000 crore fund to push stuck projects.
 It can be noted that the RBI has discontinued the practice of loan recast for the last few years, but has created an exception for small businesses after Governor Shaktikanta Das took over.
 "We have requested the NHB (National Housing Bank, sector regulator) and others to take a relook at the provisioning and the NPA issue on projects that are stuck and need the last mile funding," Parekh told reporters.
 "We are talking to the regulators, we have spoken to the finance ministry, one time restructuring is absolutely necessary," he added.
 Parekh said there have been precedents of similar one-time reliefs being allowed by the RBI in the past including in 1993 and also after the global financial crisis.
 He said there are a host of reasons beyond financial stress of the promoter alone which lead to NPAs in the case of realty projects, including lack of environmental, tree authority or NGT approvals, which stop a project from taking off.
 When asked if he has heard from either the regulator or the finance ministry, Parekh replied in the negative.
 He welcomed the Rs 25,000 crore as a good beginning and added that the fund has already approved four proposals but did not share any details of the same.
 HDFC has invested Rs 250 crore in the first Rs 12,500 crore fund anchored by SBI Caps and have a representative on the managing board, he said.
 Parekh said the remainder fund of Rs 12,500 crore may be anchored by NIIF or some other fund.
 Meanwhile, when asked when he sees a revival in the realty market, Parekh asked investors to "forget" about their bets for the next five years on the residential side, hinting that a recovery is unlikely soon.
 Parekh said while it is a good time to buy houses for staying, residential property investments may at best yield one or two per cent return if rented out and also said it is better not to rent those out.
 He, however, said the commercial market is booming.
