The pain is visible in the latest corporate earnings of some mutual fund companies. Among the top mutual fund companies Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC reported a 13% on-year decline in net profit to ₹136 crore from ₹156 crore last year. “While we are constructive on Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC’s strong and diversified distribution network, given rising competitive intensity, we believe yields will plummet faster than assets under management (AUM) growth, posing a high risk to earnings from negative operating leverage,” said analysts at HDFC Securities. The brokerage house downgraded the rating on the company’s stock to ‘Add’ from ‘Buy’. As a result, shares of Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC have been the top loser among its peers, slipping 21% in 2023 so far. Rival HDFC Asset Management Company posted a sequential 2% rise in profit to ₹376 crore in the March quarter while its revenue fell 3% to ₹541 crore. However, in the case of HDFC AMC, analysts feel that the impact of the total expense ratio (TER) changes on the company’s stock may be limited due to strong AUM growth and potential benefits from its HDFC Bank parentage. Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) is the parent company of HDFC AMC that is expected to complete its merger with HDFC Bank by <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/wealth/borrow/hdfc-hdfc-bank-merger-how-will-it-impact-hdfc-home-loan-borrowers-will-home-loan-interest-rates-go-down/articleshow/99978517.cms">July this year as per reports. </a> “While we remain watchful of the proposed changes in the TER structure and HDFC AMC’s stock has corrected by c.9% over the last 3 months on fears regarding the changes, we expect the impact to be limited and current valuations (20x FY25 EPS) adequately factor in the expected cut in earnings. HDFC AMC is our top pick in the space and the stock can see a meaningful rerating in the near to medium term driven by robust AUM growth and potential benefits from HDFC Bank parentage,” said analysts at JM Financial. On the other hand, <keyword id="193636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uti-amc" source="Orion">UTI AMC</keyword>’s profit grew strongly to ₹86 crore in March quarter from ₹60 crore in the previous quarter and ₹54 crore during the same period last year. The amendment in the Finance Bill that proposed to do away with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/debt-schemes-of-mfs-lose-edge-over-bank-deposits-as-budget-proposes-to-scrap-ltcg-indexation-benefits/articleshow/98965932.cms">long-term capital gains tax benefits on debt investments</a> was the latest trigger that impacted the mutual fund companies. As per the proposed changes in the Finance Bill, investors in debt funds will have to pay tax according to their income slabs. Investors had so far benefited from indexation while calculating long-term capital gains from debt funds but this will now longer be available effective 1 April. Adding to it, as per reports, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is considering taking action against big fund houses that charge very high expense ratios from their customers. Currently as per SEBI’s rules, mutual funds can charge a total expense ratio (TER) of up to 2.25%, if the AUM reaches ₹500 crore. However, the regulator might now reduce this expense amount to benefit investors. Also, since distributors earn more commission by selling new funds, there are cases of mis-selling. Global peers include companies like the US-based Slice and Lemonade. However, in India, only 4 in 100 Indians have any kind of insurance and, therefore, the headroom for growth is immense. The world average is 7.4. Insurance penetration in India, a year earlier, just before the pandemic, was an appalling 2.8. The last one year has been good for insurers. According to a survey by Policybazaar, the average sum insured for health insurance policies bought on the online insurance marketplace almost doubled to ₹22.4 lakh by March 2021 compared to ₹11.4 lakh a year earlier. The company sold 7.2 million insurance policies in the year ending March 2021, up from 5.9 million a year earlier. Policybazaar is one of the biggest beneficiaries of the boom in India’s insurance sector as a market leader in selling insurance online. Private equity firm True North Co’s partner Haresh Chawla, in an exclusive interaction with Business Insider, recalled a conversation he had with one of the top three insurance companies in India, a couple of years ago. The management told him that almost 10% of their business came through Policybazaar. “I asked them, [say] there are 15 insurance companies in India. If for all 15 insurance companies, 10% market share or revenue is taken by PolicyBazaar, can you imagine when you add up the revenue for Policybazaar gets how big it becomes. And then the room fell silent. It's almost that the whole world situation is like the traditional companies are sleeping on these issues,” Haresh added. India has 57 insurance companies, 24 are in the life insurance business, while 34 are non-life insurers, according to the <a target="_blank" class="c-link" href="https://www.ibef.org/industry/insurance-sector-india.aspx">India Brand Equity Foundation</a>. Among the life insurers, Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) is the sole public sector company. However, that’s just potential. HDFC Life HDFC Life Insurance Company reported a 6.1% increase in consolidated net profit to ₹327.83 crore for the quarter ended September 30. The total income of the life insurer jumped nearly 90% to ₹16,426.03 crore, it said in a stock-exchange filing. The shares of HDFC Life ended 2% higher on Monday. MRPL and ONGC Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals will buy 49% stake in ONGC for ₹ 1,220 crore. Also, ONGC has issued non-convertible debentures worth ₹1,140 crore on a private placement basis. The shares of MRPL ended 2% higher on Monday, whereas ONGC gained over 3%. ACC The cement maker ACC reported a 20.25% increase in consolidated net profit to ₹363.85 crore for the third quarter ended September 30. The company follows the January-December financial year. Tata Communications Tata Communications posted an around seven-fold jump in its consolidated net profit to ₹384.81 crore for the second quarter ended September 30. The company’s consolidated revenue grew 4.5% to ₹4,477.18 crore during the quarter, the company said in a BSE filing. The shares of Tata Communications ended 5% higher on Friday. Jet Airways Cash-strapped Jet Airways on Saturday approved the resolution plan submitted by London-based Kalrock Capital and UAE-based businessmen Murari Lal Jalan to acquire the airline. Bajaj Auto too has been a beneficiary, with the company witnessing a gradual sales recovery from the lows of the first quarter. But there may be some pain left in store for the company. A ICICI Direct report highlighted that Bajaj’s “high margin 3-W category is still not out of the woods amidst Covid crises given the apprehensions over public transport and norms of social distancing.” This was evident even in September sales figures. While Bajaj’s overall sales rose 10%, the commercial vehicle segment declined nearly 44%. Capping of MEIS incentives may add to its woes. The other overhang for Bajaj Auto earnings in July-September quarter will be the recent cap imposition by the government on incentives under the Merchandise Exports from India Scheme (MEIS) from September 1. Bajaj Auto is among the largest beneficiaries of the scheme. The company told <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/auto/industry/bajaj-auto-might-lose-around-rs-20-crore-per-month-with-incentive-cap-under-meis-merchandise-exports-from-india-scheme-global-markets-chinese/2073451/">Financial Express </a>that it received upto ₹20 crore per month and got over ₹230 crore under the MEIS in FY20. <div type="image" title="Bajaj exports" msid="78787340" hostid="261"></div> The festive season is fuelling hopes With the arrival of the festive season, Bajaj Auto is also betting on a sharp rise in sales figures. “The initial market trends do suggest a bigger uptick during the festive season with people’s sentiment improving and the need for personal mobility becoming even more evident in Covid times,” said the Axis Securities report. <div type="image" title="Copy of Bajaj Auto Share price (3)" msid="78787363" hostid="261"></div> Bajaj Auto has gained over 7% since the beginning of the second quarter, till date. With demand slowing down and the cost of input rising, the earnings of many MSMEs took a hit. UX Design Studio, Lights Out, also found it difficult to close its debt. As the pandemic receded and the economy improved, Lights Out Studio pulled itself out of its debt and is now on the road to profitability. Lights Out, which started as a Digital Agency in 2018, decided to pivot its focus to Product Design in 2020. It was quick to realise that studios’ diversification and rapid experimentation reduces much of the risks that Startups face in pursuing one single idea to exhaustion. Good execution of the Studio model can result in multiple successful products in a year and as Greg Isenberg, Founder of Late Checkout predicted, product studios represent the future of Startups. Studios might give a way to eliminate much of the risk without losing out on the possible reward. After surviving through a debt of Rs 20 lakh and on its way to clock 5 crore in revenues, Lights Out has now transformed into a human-centered &amp; design-solution led powerhouse. We spoke to Founders of Lights Out Studio, Saksham Mendiratta, Business Growth and Adil Singh, Experience Design about their learnings from this experience, challenges ahead and vision for the studio. Q. Can you walk us through your journey so far and share a few key milestones? We started as a Digital Agency back in 2018. Grew to about 6 team members and 75L in revenue. But the business didn’t scale well as we weren’t excited about building a social media agency. Most “agencies” in India fall into this trap of growth / scale: new clients, hence hire, deliver mediocre work (or in most cases, clients don’t approve of the quality since they’re forever riding on FOMO), client drops, new client comes in, the vicious cycle continues. We just didn’t want to be a mediocre player in a very big pool. Meanwhile, Product Design (website &amp; apps) was emerging as our area of strength and hence we decided to pivot in early 2020 to just become a ‘<keyword id="12649858" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="product-studio" source="Orion">Product Studio</keyword>.’ Little did we know that we’d be hit by a pandemic right then. We almost started the new financial year with a loss of 20 lakhs and then built our customer base one by one purely focussed on Product Design. The journey of growth into a niche is more satisfying (and painstakingly long) than that of a generalist. Another key milestone was our entry point into the US market with a key collaboration with <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/mrniksharma/">Nik Sharma</a> was a turning point, that got us new customers and helped build a solid portfolio, in the US. Sharpening our focus further, we entered into original content creation with our podcast &amp; newsletter IP’s, that helped build solid credibility in the Indian market, especially amidst DTC business builders. From here on, we’ve now started to invest in emerging DTC businesses: our understanding of the sector is very high and we know how to grow consumer-tech business. This should help cement our position as an investor and build the mindset of backing great founders &amp; teams. Q. What does your clientele look like today? We work with businesses that qualify 3 parameters: <ul><li>High-growth</li><li>Consumer-tech</li><li>Serving affluent markets</li></ul>Our past clientele include: CureFit, Kapiva, Fittr, The Souled Store, Pela Case (Canada), Calamus Ultrabikes, SugarFit, HDFC, Sharma Brands, to name a few. Q. You started 3 years ago as a Digital Agency and shortly in 2020 after the revamp, you had to face your biggest crisis ever. Tell us what kind of challenges did you face as a relatively new business? As a new business that had just rebranded (in March 2020), we were pushed to start from ground zero when the pandemic hit. With just a couple of customers that we retained, we narrowed our focus and area of work furthermore from there on. Staying niche helped build experience &amp; credibility in one sector: consumer-tech. And consumer-tech (largely DTC businesses) has risen massively in the past few months, thanks to the global increase in online spends. We were quick to realise that there’s no dominance in this sector when it comes to business design &amp; technology consulting. And hence, the leapfrogging pace came in naturally. We retained our focus on culture, worked with selective clients, and stayed true to adding more value to existing businesses as opposed to bringing in new ones (retention is far easier than acquisition). We also built internal content IP’s through our podcasts &amp; newsletters, that become a distribution engine for our thoughts &amp; experience in this sector. And right there, the perfect mix of a service-based consulting business was born. Q. You have managed to turn around your company from a debt of Rs 20 lakh to revenues crossing Rs 5 crore this year. So, how did you make that happen? Which expenses did you cut back on and where did you turn your focus? Scale has purely been a sub-set of our quality of work. We focussed on fewer projects and massive turn-arounds in each of the projects we worked upon, that helped build our work-of-mouth credibility. Every single project that we’ve worked on in the past few months, has been a referral. We also focussed on building a team that comes with an entrepreneurial mindset. Every single team member has contributed to the growth of the business by doubling up on ownership &amp; learning. And that’s been one huge differentiator in our journey. Instead of cutting down, we ramped up our expenses on building in-house content, that has had a long-term benefit for us. Instant gratification was never our thing and we’ve always aimed for a longer vision. Q. The product designing industry and client needs are evolving rapidly. How are you keeping up with the pace? The product design industry in India takes its inspiration from the West. Given that almost 50% of our clientele is based in the US, we are far ahead of the curve to catch trends and help businesses in India implement them. Product Design for consumer tech is now catching up on building better design &amp; experiences in their products. And we’ve largely focussed on just those products that are built for affluent consumers and have a great experience wired in them. It’s for these reasons that we believe that we’re on the leading end of the product design spectrum, to bring in new trends in India and become a formidable player in the product design space. Q. What do you think sets you apart? Our approach with our customers, culture and our mindset: Customers: <ul><li>We work with high-growth businesses. Hence, we utilise past data and trends to forecast and build better experiences for them. This works in their favour since it comes from an external consultant who has the vantage point of an outsider.</li><li>We work with businesses where we solve critical business challenges: like increasing acquisition, better retention or even build communities. And so we end up working with the founding teams, for whom these projects are as critical as their core growth objectives.</li><li>We don’t work on typical briefs that most ‘agencies’ globally would want to. We spend close to 2-4 weeks just ironing out the challenge at hand, help them formulate a solid business objective and then begin work. It elongates our sales closure process, but by the time we sign off on commercials, we’ve added immense value for them to be immersed in the process with us.</li></ul>Culture: We operate as a studio in all aspects. And we absolutely hate the agency culture. Here’s how: <ul><li>Hire people who have had an entrepreneurial stint in their life. It’s a mindset that we deeply admire and propagate.</li><li>Flexibility in all senses: Our team can plan their days / weeks / months in advance since they have visibility of the projects and can tailor their personal &amp; professional commitments accordingly.</li><li>We don’t have time in / time outs or the concept of leaves</li><li>We spend time on debriefs: analysing where we went wrong as well as building on what we were great at.</li><li>We push people to come up with their own ideas (0-1) and help nurture them as independent projects that can spin off as investable businesses.</li></ul>Mindset: <ul><li>We believe in the positive sum game mindset. We put our content, strategies and even execution techniques through our content, for the industry to grow.</li><li>We wish to remain niche by design but continue to focus on adding value to each customer. It works in everyone’s favour when an external consultant comes with such a mindset.</li></ul>Q. What are the challenges ahead and what kind of changes can we see at the studio in the next few months? Being a bootstrapped business, we get lesser attention as compared to the ones who draw investments. But because we focus on profitability, it helps us reinvest back into the business and build more leverage and strengthen our moats. We’re entering DTC investments, so <keyword id="12649857" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lights-out-venture" source="Orion">Lights Out Venture</keyword> is an off-shoot of the product studio that will start gaining momentum in the next few months. We’re keen to invest in 4-6 DTC businesses (globally) in the next calendar year, 2022. We like to go slow, but stead in our approach and hence confident of what we’re building. Q. What is your larger vision for the studio? To become a dominant expert in the consumer-tech space across: <ul><li>Building new 0-1 products, in-house that are born through assessing gaps in the market and are community-driven.</li><li>Becoming an original content creation hub pushing content across different channels of video, podcast and written content, at the intersection of business &amp; technology.</li><li>Invest and back exciting DTC businesses that help create value in the consumer-tech ecosystem.</li></ul>

This UX Design studio pulled itself out from a debt of Rs 20 lakh to revenues crossing Rs 5 crore during the pandemic, here is how

Mumbai, Apr 28 () Private sector lender Axis Bank on Tuesday formally joined peers to have a life insurance joint venture by announcing to raise its stake in Max Life Insurance, the fourth largest player in the life cover space, to 30 per cent for Rs 1,592 crore. The deal, which comes during bleak economic times as the country grapples with the impact of COVID-19 pandemic, was struck due to the opportunity in the life insurance space and also the price at which it could be sealed, Axis Bank's managing director and chief executive Amitabh Chaudhry said. Other large lenders, including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and SBI, and also smaller ones have life insurance joint ventures or have promoted companies themselves. According to experts, banks originate a lot of insurance business and "manufacturing" products is more rewarding than merely selling them. India's third largest private sector lender Axis Bank, which already has a minor 1 per cent ownership of the insurer, used to sell Max's policies for over a decade, which has seen 19 lakh customers and over Rs 38,000 crore in premium generated, Chaudhry said. A senior Axis Bank official said the deal includes picking up over 55 crore shares of the insurer at Rs 28.61 per unit, which takes the total deal consideration to Rs 1,592 crore, and underlined that the final figure may wary a bit depending on the date of deal closure. The deal requires nods from the Reserve Bank, Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority and Competition Commission of India, and will take up to six to nine months to consummate. When asked about the timing of the deal, Chaudhry defended the move pointing out to the "big opportunity" that is presented by the life insurance sector and the potential for the upside on the investment presented by the price at which it is signed. It can be noted that the Reserve Bank is pushing lenders not to declare dividends to conserve capital and deploy it for fresh lending, which will be necessary to kickstart the economy once the lockdown ends. Chaudhry said the Max stake buy will dent its overall capital adequacy, which stood at a comfortable level of over 17 per cent, by only 0.10 per cent. Max Life Insurance is a part of the listed Max Financial Services Ltd (MFSL), a diversified financial services company. In a regulatory filing, Max said that the consideration payable by Axis Bank for purchase of the shares shall be arrived basis the valuation of Max Life conducted as per Rule 11UA read with Rule 11UAA of the Income-tax Rules, 1962. Upon the closing of the deal, MFSL will have the right to nominate four directors on the Max Life board, while Axis Bank will have the right to nominate three directors. One nominee director of the promoter group on the board of MFSL shall be a person identified by Axis Bank. Chaudhry denied speculation about the stake being raised in the future by the bank, including murmurs of a complete takeover, saying there are no such plans. At present, products sold through the bank reportedly contribute for 54 per cent of Max Life's revenues. On February 20, a tri-party agreement was signed between Axis, MFSL and Max Life to explore the possibility of a long-term strategic partnership between Axis Bank and Max Life. At present, MFSL holds 72.5 per cent stake in Max Life and Japan-based Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance (MSI) owns 25.5 per cent stake. The proposed transaction with Axis Bank follows the ongoing swapping by MSI of 20.6 per cent stake that it holds in Max Life with a 21.9 per cent stake in MFSL, an official statement said. "MFSL also plans to purchase MSI's balance stake in Max Life. Post completion of the series of transactions, Max Life will become a 70:30 joint venture between MFSL and Axis Bank," it explained. Against the 30 per cent stake, Axis Bank's name will be included in Max Life's tag line. It is to be noted that Max Life had made an attempt to merge with HDFC Life in 2017 which failed as they did not receive regulatory approval due to reported complexity of the deal. Interestingly, the deal was then brokered by the then HDFC Life CEO Amitabh Chaudhry who is now the CEO of Axis Bank. Following failure of the deal, Max Group made several attempts to sell part of its stake. However, it did not meet success. MFSL shares gained 5.14 per cent to close at Rs 475.80 apiece on the BSE, while Axis Bank stock surged 6.61 per cent to close at 455.55 per unit, as against gains of 1.17 per cent on the benchmark. Axis Bank to buy 29% stake in Max Life for Rs 1,592 crore

MUMBAI: The markets are on a roll, with the <keyword id="6484188" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sensex">Sensex</keyword> and Nifty making fresh life highs, led by gains in banks, auto and energy counters. 
 
The new life high for Sensex is 26,356.24; and that for Nifty is 7,865.85. 
 
The Nifty extended its winning streak for fifth consecutive session and hit an all-time high as FIIs continued to pump in dollars in Indian markets on expectations of pick-up in economy 
 
Sudip Bandyopadhyay, President, Destimoney Securities, is of the view that the market will continue to move upwards. 
 
“A lot of FIIs money is coming out of Russia into Indian markets through BRICS fund. Domestic investors are also entering the market and that is providing support,” said Bandyopadhyay. 
 
At 2:02 p.m.; the 50-share index was at 7,860.95, up 69.25 points or 0.89 per cent. It touched an all-time high of 7,865.85 and a low of 7,779.20 in trade today. 
 The S&amp;P <keyword id="35140" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE">BSE</keyword> Sensex was at 26,340.82, up 237.59 points or 0.91 per cent. It touched an all-time high of 26,356.24 and a low of 26,075.28 in trade today. 
 
Sandeep Tandon of Quant Broking is of the view that market went through consolidation in the last three months. It is light at the moment and looks set for next leg of upmove. 
 
The CNX Midcap Index rallied 1.27 per cent and the CNX Smallcap Index surged 2.10 per cent. 
 
Among the sectoral indices, the CNX Bank Nifty was up 1.49 per cent, the CNX Auto Index gained 1.02 per cent, the CNX Energy Index rose 1.42 per cent. 
 
The CNX FMCG Index was down 0.75 per cent and the CNX IT Index slipped 0.51 per cent. 
 BPCL (up 5.25 per cent), <keyword id="6355975" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Axis-Bank">Axis Bank</keyword> (up 3.11 per cent), <keyword id="45008" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Power">Tata Power</keyword> (up 3.04 per cent), BHEL (up 2.91 per cent) and Tata Motors (up 2.87 per cent) were among the major Nifty gainers. 
 
ITC (1.92 per cent), Infosys (1.01 per cent), HCL Tech (0.80 per cent), HDFC (0.70 per cent) and TCS (0.68 per cent) were among the index losers. 
 
The market breadth was positive on the NSE with 1090 gainers against 425 losers. 
 
Foreign institutional investors were net buyers worth Rs 625.18 crore and domestic institutional investors were net buyers worth Rs 135.75 crore on Thursday as per the provisional data from the National Stock Exchange.
