The share price of private-sector lenders cracked over 2% during the afternoon session after trading in the green for almost two hours. The crack in its shares also brought the Indian benchmark index down from 300 points higher to 30 points higher. <div type="image" title="HDFC Bank" msid="79545706" hostid="261"></div> The RBI decision came after the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/apps/news/hdfc-banks-net-banking-upi-services-and-atms-down-due-to-data-centre-outage/articleshow/79344484.cms">recent outage</a> at its data centre, which impacted operations last month. It is noteworthy that among all the lenders, HDFC is the largest credit card seller in the country. “RBI has issued an order dated December 2, to HDFC Bank Ltd with regard to certain incidents of outages in the internet banking/ mobile banking/ payment utilities of the bank over the past two years, including the recent outages in the bank’s internet banking and payment system on November 21, 2020, due to a power failure in the primary data centre,” the bank said in a regulatory filing. According to the bank the <a href="https://www.bseindia.com/xml-data/corpfiling/AttachLive/893abfb4-95cb-4942-a555-312aef465ef4.pdf">RBI order</a> “has advised the bank to temporarily stop all launches of the digital business-generating activities planned under its program Digital 2.0 and other proposed business generating IT applications and sourcing of new credit card customers”. In addition, the order has directed the bank board to examine the lapses and fixes accountability. The lender said the above measures should be considered for lifting upon satisfactory compliance with the major critical observations as identified by the RBI. HDFC Bank said “over the last two years, it has taken several measures to fortify its IT systems and will continue to work swiftly to close out the balance and would continue to engage with the regulator in this regard. “The bank has been taking conscious, concrete steps to remedy the recent outages on its digital banking channels and assures its customers that it expects the current supervisory actions will have no impact on its existing credit cards, digital banking channels and existing operations. The bank believes that these measures will not materially impact its overall business,” it added. HDFC Bank has lost over $2 billion in market value after the RBI crackdown on the lender’s digital business

<ul><li>Shares of <keyword id="6357149" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hdfc-bank" source="Orion">HDFC Bank</keyword>, gained close to 2% on Monday’s trade to ₹1,625 apiece on rural banking expansion plans.</li><li>As part of the plan, the lender also plans to hire 2,500 people over the next six months.</li><li>The bank’s management, in its July earnings call, had also indicated that the lender is looking at “solid growth” in the ongoing financial year. </li></ul>Shares of private sector lender, HDFC Bank, gained close to 2% on Monday’s trade to ₹1,625 apiece as its management looked to double the bank’s rural reach to over two lakh villages over the next two years. "India's rural and semi-urban markets are under-served in credit extension. They present sustainable long-term growth opportunities for the Indian banking system,” said Rahul Shukla, group head – commercial and rural banking at HDFC Bank in a press <a href="https://www.hdfcbank.com/personal/about-us/news-room/press-release/2021/q3/hdfc-bank-to-double-its-rural-reach-to-2-lakh-villages-in-2-years">statement</a> on Sunday. The statement was issued by the bank on the same day when Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman prodded banks to expand their rural presence at an Indian Banks' Association event. "Even today many panchayats don't have a bank branch. I am not saying that you need to have a physical presence everywhere, digitisation has saved a lot of costs without compromising the service banks provide," she said on Sunday. As part of the plan, the lender also plans to hire 2,500 people over the next six months. The move, it said, will help the lender to expand its reach to one-third of rural India, while extending its leadership in lending to micro, small and medium enterprises. Currently, HDFC Bank offers its products and services to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in over 550 districts. As of June 30, the bank had close to half of its 5,653 branches in semi-urban and rural India, along with 15,912 banking correspondents. Of its total retail advances worth ₹5.23 lakh crore, Kisan Gold card formed close to 9% at ₹46,868 crore. The bank’s commercial and rural banking loan book, as of June 30, rose 25% year-on-year to ₹3.86 lakh crore. The growth in HDFC Bank’s stock price is also partly led by a strong market sentiment that has prevailed as the fear of an impending third COVID wave has weakened,” she said. The bank’s management, in its July earnings call, had also indicated that the lender is looking at “solid growth” in the ongoing financial year. “If I were to take any insights and share with you for the first 15 days trends for the month of July '21, HDFC Bank is echoing the projection of almost 100% of pre-COVID levels on the disbursement. And that gives me the optimism that in quarter two, which is July, August and September, we should be in a position to scale up rapidly on our growth rates,” said Arvind Kapil, the bank's country head for retail assets at HDFC Bank’s earning call in July. “...our assessment and our belief is that we should be back on course to achieve the original financial year plans and should close the year on a solid growth for the financial year,” he said. Last week, the bank said it would launch co-branded credit cards in partnership with Paytm. The launch, planned in October, it said will coincide with the festive season as the lender looks to tap into potentially higher consumer demand for credit card offers, EMIs and Buy Now Pay Later options, with the full suite of products to be on offer by the end of December. HDFC Bank is looking to hire 2,500 people in the next six months across India to double its rural cover

The bank had posted a net profit of Rs 6,300.81 crore during the corresponding January-March period of 2018-19. The consolidated total income during the March quarter of 2019-20 increased to Rs 38,287.17 crore, from Rs 33,260.48 crore a year ago, the bank said in a regulatory filing. The bank said it will not make any further dividend payouts from profit pertaining to 2019-20, as per RBI directives announced on Friday. The central bank had debarred lenders from dividend payouts so that they can conserve capital in an environment of heightened uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 crisis. Accordingly, the board of directors of HDFC Bank, at their meeting held on Saturday, did not propose any final dividend for the year ended March 31, 2020, it added. PNB Housing Finance shares hit upper circuit six days in a row, but the potential upside could be limited now

HDFC’s stock value jumped by 1.5% in early morning trade after the company announced that it has plans to raise ₹14,000 crore through its new equity fundraising program. In addition to the ₹14,000 crore, HDFC will also be issuing secured redeemable non-convertible debentures worth ₹9,000 crore. This is the third time in the last 12 years that HDFC is raising capital through such an offering. It did so once in 2009 and then again in 2015. HDFC's first full quarter in the face of the coronavirus pandemic saw a loss of 4.7% at the end of June. Its gross non-performing loans stood at ₹8,631 crore accounting for 1.87% of HDFC’s loan portfolio. The company already has ₹12,285 in the bank as provisions to serve as a cushion once the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) moratorium ends on August 31. It even added another ₹1,199 this quarter specifically for COVID related accounts. Despite having safeguards in place, many companies are going down the QIP route to shore up capital against the uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic. Later, in an analyst call in April 2021, PNB Housing Finance’s CEO and MD, Hardayal Prasad, said that the company is evaluating its options. “As you are aware that we were waiting for the capital raise with participation of PNB and ₹600 crore was earmarked since then. But after, the permission was not given. So, we have initiated the process of evaluating all options and modes for the fundraise,” said Prasad.
