Ahead of the <keyword id="19936553" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="budget" source="keywords">budget</keyword>, which is set to be presented tomorrow, all broad market indices opened the day in red, except for India VIX, a gauge for market volatility, which was up by 3.64% during early trade. Nifty microcap and small caps shed over 1% each on opening. As for sectoral indices, auto, realty, consumer durables and oil and gas were down 1% each in opening trade. Only FMCG managed to gain a week start and opened the week in green. Over the weekend, <keyword id="19895995" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="HDFC-Bank" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="HDFC Bank" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="HDFC Bank">HDFC Bank</keyword> reported its Q1FY25 results. The bank's profit after tax (PAT) jumped to Rs 161.8 billion, up by 35.3% on YoY basis, while its advances for the quarter were Rs 24,635 billion, up by 52.5% YoY, but down by 0.9% quarterly. As for its deposits, at Rs 23,790 billion for the quarter, marked a 24.4% uptick YoY, but remained flat over quarters. The bank's net interest income (NII) stood at Rs 298.4 billion, up by 26.4% YoY. Even the bank's net non performing assets ratio (NPA) stood at 0.39% down 1 bps YoY, and up 6 bps QoQ. The share inched up by 0.78% to trade at Rs 1,619.8 in early trade. Kotak, which also reported its Q1FY25 results over the weekend, saw its PAT jump to Rs 6,250 crore, up 81% YoY. Its Net Interest Income (NII) for Q1FY25 increased to Rs 6,842 crore, up 10% YoY. Net Interest Margin (NIM) was 5.02% for April-June 2024. While total advances inched up 20% YoY to Rs 4,05,957 crore as at June 30, 2024, average total deposits grew to Rs 4,35,603 crore, up 21% YoY. During early trade today, the share was trading at Rs 1,756.25, down by 3.59%. Mr. Aditya Gaggar, Director of Progressive Shares notes that the candlestick pattern on the weekly and daily charts denotes weakness. An early indication from GIFT Nifty suggests the same, tepid opening of the Indian equities. A level of 24,200 will serve as strong support while the higher side is capped at 24,800, he said. "Range (52,100-52,750) breakout in Bank Nifty is necessary for a clear direction. On a sectoral front, a mixed view can be seen where we are recommending booking profits on the Auto segment while we are bullish on the FMCG and IT sectors. The Energy and Metal sectors are indicating weakness by forming a bearish engulfing candle and consolidation breakdown respectively. Weakness was seen in the Broader markets also as Mid and Smallcap space has formed a bearish divergence in RSI. Ahead of the Union Budget, we are suggesting to remain light on trading positions and to focus on risk management", he continued.

Out of the 2,800 stocks traded during the day, 1,008 stocks saw advances, while 1,725 stocks saw declines, and another 67 stocks remained unchanged. 209 stocks touched their 52-week high price, and 27 stocks touched their 52-week low. 120 stocks hit the upper circuit during the day, while 93 stocks remained in the lower circuit. With the exception of Nifty 50 and 100, all other broad based indices closed the day in red. India VIX dipped by 2.41%, while small cap 50 plunged by 1.03%. As for sectoral indices, media (down by 1.89%) and realty (down by 1.70%) saw the maximum dips, while bank, FMCG, financial services ,oil and gas, healthcare and pharma closed the day in green. Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares says that Indian bourses began the August month on a strong note above the psychological barrier of 25,000. "But, negative divergence in RSI pulled the Index lower to settle the trade at 25,010.90 with gains of 59.75 points. Among the sectors, Energy was the top gainer while media and realty corrected the most. Broader markets underperformed the frontline index as mid and small caps corrected by 0.85% &amp; 0.98% respectively. The Index has formed a Spinning Top candlestick pattern which represents indecisiveness where the downside seems to be protected at 24,930 while the immediate resistance is placed at 25,100", he continued.

Stock market closing: Nifty inches past 25,000-mark, Tata Steel, Hero Moto Corp amidst day's leading laggards

Both <keyword id="19896382" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sensex" source="keywords">Sensex</keyword> and <keyword id="19896381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty" source="keywords">Nifty</keyword> closed the day in green, with Sensex also crossing the 80,000 mark for the first time. While Nifty closed at 24,286.50 points, up by 0.67%, Sensex closed at 79,986.80 points, having inched up by 0.69%. As for broad market indices, all of them, except India VIX closed the day in green. While VIX ended the day 3.18% down, Nifty next 50 gained 1.08%, and Nifty small cap 100 added 1.03%. As for sectoral indices, <keyword id="722345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty-Bank" source="Orion">Nifty Bank</keyword> was up by 1.77%, and financial services was up by 1.80%. PSUs jumped up 1.06%, while private banks inched up by 2.02%. <keyword id="6354777" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Media" source="Orion">Media</keyword> was down by 0.39%, and metal jumped by 1.06 to end the day in green. During the day, Tata Consumers (up by 3.55%) and <keyword id="895682" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Adani-Ports" source="Orion">Adani Ports</keyword> (up by 2.39%) took the lead, but it was private banks who led the top gainers rally during the day, with <keyword id="19991962" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kotak" source="keywords">Kotak</keyword> bank up by 2.23%, <keyword id="19896378" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="HDFC" source="keywords">HDFC</keyword> bank up by 2.14% and Axis bank rising up 1.82%. On the other hand, TCS lost 1.23%, Titan lost 1.11%, Reliance shed 0.68%, Tata Motors lost 0.41% and Hindalco lost 0.40%, making them amongst the top losers of the day. Out of the 2,797 stocks traded during the day, 1,745 saw advances, while 970 saw declines. 215 stocks hit their 52-week high price, while 16 stocks hit their 52-week low. Around 201 stocks hit the upper circuit during the day's trade, while 44 hit the lower circuit. Geojit financial service's share rallied 4.02% to end day at Rs 100.37, after it registered a sharp fall yesterday, following SEBIs orders on uniform charging, and not taking trading volume into play. The firm reported that during FY 23-24, approximately Rs.40 lakhs, which was the difference between the amount recovered from clients and the charges paid to Exchange, had been recorded as income for the year. However, this amount constitutes 0.067% of the total income and 0.22% of profit before tax for FY 23-24. <h2>Experts advise caution as Sensex hits 80,000</h2>According to Mr. Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares, "Indian bourses commenced the session on a strong note at a fresh high of 24,290 but due to lack of follow-through, the Index oscillated in a well-maintained range to end the session at 24,286.50 with gains of 162.65 points. Barring media, all other sectors ended the day in green with Bank Nifty being the top performer followed by metal and PSU Banks. Broader markets outperformed the frontline index as mid and smallcap gained by 0.79% &amp; 1.03% respectively". Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities noted that today, the benchmark indices registered a fresh all time high of 24,309/80,074. The Nifty ends 162 points higher while the Sensex was up by 545 points. Almost all the major sectoral indices were traded in to the positive territory but private bank index outperformed rallied over 2 percent. Technically, after a gap up opening market comfortably trading above 24,200/79,600 resistance level which is largely positive. "In addition, on intraday charts it is holding higher high and higher low formation, which supports further uptrend from the current levels. We are of the view that, as long as the index is trading above 24200/79600 the bullish structure is likely to continue". Arvinder Singh Nanda, Senior Vice President of Master Capital Services noted that BSE Sensex today touched the 80,000 mark for the first time, setting a new all-time high. "This milestone comes after the index added the last 10,000 points in under seven months, having first hit 70,000 on December 11, 2023". But while the long-term outlook remains positive, he advised caution at current levels.

Stock market closing: Sensex crosses 80k, Kotak, HDFC and ICICI bank lead the rally

Benchmark indices <keyword id="6354813" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nifty" source="Orion">Nifty</keyword> and Sensex recovered from their losses last week to close in greens on Monday. While Sensex inched up over 690 points to close at 79,476.63 points, Nifty closed the day over the 24k mark, at 24,213.30, up by 217 points. During the day, Sensex had soared 740.89 points, or 0.94%, to touch 79,523.13 points. From the 30-share Sensex pack, JSW Steel surged nearly 5% while Tata Steel jumped nearly 4%. Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank, HDFC Bank, State Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and UltraTech Cement were also among the big gainers. On the other hand, Tech Mahindra, Lupin, Britannia, and Infosys were among the major laggards on Sensex. On Nifty, where 39 stocks advanced during the day and the remaining 11 saw declines, Tata Steel, Hindalco, and JSW Steel were among the top gainers. Adani Ports, ITC, Bharti Airtel, and Asian Paints were among the leading laggards. In Asian markets, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Hong Kong settled in the positive territory, while Seoul ended lower. Yesterday, the BSE benchmark tumbled 941.88 points, or 1.18%, to settle at 78,782.24, the lowest closing level since August 6. The Nifty had also tanked 309 points, or 1.27%, to close at 23,995.35. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) continued with their hefty exodus, offloading equities worth Rs 4,329.79 crore today, according to exchange data. So far in November, DIIs (domestic institutional investors) have put in Rs 2,558.75 crore in Indian markets. Global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 0.60% to $75.53 a barrel today. <h2>Banks, metals lead the party</h2> Aditya Gaggar, Director of Progressive Shares, explains that while bears dominated the first half of trading session by dragging the index lower; it was the banking counters that led to a sharp up move and pushed the index higher from its previous session's low. The Metal stocks also joined the party and pushed the index further higher to end the session at 24,213.30 with gains of 217.95 points. Mid and smallcaps also advanced but underperformed the frontline index", he added. Today's rally was largely led by banking scrips. The BSE Bankex jumped a staggering 1,218.58 points during the day. On NSE, both banks and financial services indices inched up by 1.94% and 1.98% respectively during the day. While PSU bank counters were up by 1.84%, private banks surged ahead with a 1.94% growth during the day. Metals were amidst the highest gainers, rising 2.84% during the day. All broad market indices closed the day in green, except for India VIX, which tumbled 4.08%.

Sensex, and Nifty rebound to greens, metals and banks lead the rally on bourses today

Out of the 2,783 stocks traded during the day, 1,186 saw advances, while 1,528 declined and another 69 remained unchanged. 122 stocks hit their 52-week high, while 27 stocks also hit their 52-week low price. 115 stocks remained in the upper circuit today, while 57 stocks hit the lower circuit during the day's trade. Amidst sectoral indices, bank, financial services, media, pharma, private bank and healthcare recorded marginal gains, while IT, <keyword id="20102108" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="metal" source="keywords">metal</keyword>, realty and <keyword id="20051327" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="oil-and-gas" source="keywords">oil and gas</keyword> indices corrected over 1% each. In other news, <keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="keywords">RBI</keyword>'s MPC (Monetary Policy Committee) decided to leave the repo rate unchanged at 6.5%, making this the 9th consecutive time that the benchmark interest rates have not been hiked or slashed since February 2023. Said Anu Aggarwal, Head – Corporate Banking, Kotak Mahindra Bank said, “RBI's decision to hold the repo rate at 6.5% for the ninth consecutive time was on expected lines amid persistent inflationary pressures with June inflation coming in at 5.1%, and food in particular running away at 8.4%. We need to watch out for Fed action in September when a rate cut is near certain which will set the stage for our own likely cut by December. RBI's commitment to inflation target of 4% while our GDP growth is on track seems the right thing to do.” <h2>IT, Metal indices witness correction </h2>Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares notes that amid extreme volatility on either sides, Nifty50 settled the weekly expiry day on a weak foot at 24,117.00 with a loss of 180.50 points. Among the sectors, pharma was the best performer while IT and metal corrected the most. With a marginal loss of over 0.30% ,mid and small caps outperformed the frontline Index. "The index is oscillating in a wide range where the downside seems to be protected at 23,965 (near 50DMA) while the higher side is capped at 24,330 (bearish gap zone) and a breakout on either side is a must for a clear picture", he noted. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities says that today, the benchmark indices witnessed a volatile trading session, after a roller coaster activity the Nifty ends 197 points lower while the Sensex was down by 582 points. "Among Sectors, IT and Metal indices lost the most shed over 1.5%, whereas some buying was seen in selective media and pharma stocks. Technically, market consistently facing selling pressure at higher levels from the day highest levels Nifty/ Sensex shed over 250/800 points. A bearish candle on daily charts and double top formation on intraday charts indicates further weakness from the current levels. For the day traders intraday texture is non-directional hence level based trading would be the ideal strategy", said Chouhan.

All broad market indices closed the day in red. India VIX dipped 7.97%, and amidst sectoral indices, financial services and PSU banks dropped over 1% each at the close of day's trade. With the exception of FMCG, IT, media, metal and realty, which managed marginal gains, all other sectors closed in the reds. Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares explains that although a strong opening reaching higher levels was seen in the opening trade; the index failed to hold its gains and gradually erased it. In the 2nd half of trading, selling pressure intensified, and the index wiped off all its gains to end the session at 23,992.55 with a loss of 63.05 points. "A mixed trend was seen across the board, where realty and IT were the top gainers, while PSU Banks corrected the most, followed by auto. From the broader markets, midcaps and small caps corrected by 0.61% &amp; 0.39% respectively, and underperformed the frontline index. The near-term outlook for Nifty50 turned bearish, unless it gives a convincing move above 24,400 while on the downside, 23,880 will be considered as immediate support", Gaggar continued. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities noted that while today, the markets opened higher due to positive Asian markets, they failed to sustain these levels and closed at the day's lowest point. "Although the market did not break the previous day's lows, it closed below the closing of the previous day. Apart from Nifty realty, metal, and IT, other indices closed in the red. Based on the short-term market structure, the trend-setting levels are 23,900/78,290. If the market falls below this, it may decline to 23,700 or 23,600/78,000-77,800, where it has support from retracements and long-term averages. It's advisable to consider selective buying around this level. On the upside, the major resistance levels are 24,150/79,000 and 24,400/79,700. It's recommended to reduce weak long positions around 24,300/24,400", he said. Rajesh Bhosale, Equity Technical Analyst, Angel One highlighted that the momentum favored the bears, and that the possibility of intermittent rebounds cannot be ruled out. "Therefore, any such bounces, similar to today, should ideally be viewed as selling opportunities. As for key levels, 24,250 appears to be immediate resistance, while the 24,350 - 24,400 range remains a challenging barrier for the bulls. Only a close above this range could potentially revive some positive momentum in the market. On the downside, immediate support is seen at 23,900 - 23,850, below which the Nifty may slip towards the 23,600 - 23,550 levels. Traders are advised to monitor these levels closely and adjust their trades accordingly, while also keeping an eye on global developments, as our markets are particularly influenced by global momentum", Bhosale continued. On the global front, oil prices rose by over 1% today, bouncing back from yesterday's losses, due to supply concerns stemming from the escalating Middle East conflict and strong U.S. services data. However, the fear of Iran retaliating against recent attacks in the region has increased fears of a broader war, threatening global supply stability and impacting oil forecasts. Furthermore, the US ISM Services PMI for July came in at 51.4, slightly above the month's forecast (51) and higher than June's reading (48.8). This is a positive sign, since it indicates a rebound in services sector, improvement in business activities, new orders and employment across industries like finance, healthcare and more. "With the Federal Reserve’s interest rate strategy under scrutiny, any positive US economic data could support the case for rate cuts", continued Chouhan. In response, global indices were seen trading in green. Nikkei 225 in particular, which had dropped around 12.4% yesterday, witnessing its worst crash since 1987, sharply rebounded about 3,217.04 points, or 10.23% to close at 34,675.46 points.

On the other hand, Bajaj Finserv (down by 2.09%), Tata Consumers (down by 1.90%), Britannia (down by 1.88%), Axis Bank (down by 1.82%) and Bajaj Finance (down by 1.67%) were amongst the leading laggards. Bajaj Finance reported its Q1FY25 results recently. While its profits rose 14% YoY to Rs 3,912 crore, the firm's net interest income also reported a 25% jump. However, the stock was trading at Rs 6,614.90, down by over 1% today. The company's loan losses and provisions during April-June 2024 period jumped to Rs 1,685 crore, as opposed to Rs 995 crore during April-June 2023. Most midcap and small cap indices registered significant growth today. Mid cap 100 was up by 1.04%, small cap 100 was up by 1.76%. However, India VIX dipped by as much as 7.72%. Small cap 50 (up by 1.74%), small cap 250 (up by 1.86%) and microcaps (up by 2.68%) also saw healthy leads during the day. As for sectoral indices, consumer durables and oil and gas were up by over 1%, while media gained over 2% during the day. Auto, bank, <keyword id="19931572" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fmcg" source="keywords">FMCG</keyword>, PSU and private banks closed the day in red. Mr. Aditya Gaggar Director of Progressive Shares noted that a mixed trend was seen in the markets where mid and smallcap segments were seen compounding their morning gains while Bank Nifty-led correction dragged the index lower to end the session at 24,413.50 with a loss of 65.55 points. "Media was the top gainer among the sectors followed by energy while profit-booking-led correction was seen in the FMCG segment. On the daily chart, the index has formed a spinning top candlestick pattern indicating indecisiveness between the bulls and bears. The level of 24,200 will remains a crucial support while 24,560 is considered as an immediate resistance", Gaggar continued. Out of the 2,770 stocks traded during the day, 1,992 stocks saw advances, while 700 declined, and 78 others remained unchanged. 130 stocks hit their 52-week high during the day, while 14 stocks hit their 52-week low price. 210 stocks hit the upper circuit, or maximum permissible trading price during a singular trading session, while 46 stocks hit the lower circuit, or the minimum permissible price allowed during one trading session.

As for broad-market indices, all closed in green except for Nifty50. While Nifty next 50 inched up 1.28% during the day, midcap 50 also jumped up by 1.74%, while India VIX inched up almost 4.13% to close the day. Amidst sectoral indices, <keyword id="19931572" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FMCG" source="keywords">FMCG</keyword>, <keyword id="19989715" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT" source="keywords">IT</keyword>, realty, media and oil and gas closed the day in red. FM Nirmala Sitharaman tabled the Economic Survey 2023-24 earlier today in the parliament, painting a positive picture of the economy for the short-term. Per the survey, the economy 's real GDP grew at about 8.2% in FY24, while it also managed to trim down its fiscal deficit from 6.4% of GDP in FY23 to 5.6% of GDP in FY24. The economy is expected to grow at about 7% over the medium term, with unemployment rates also sobering to 3.2% in 2022-23. <h2>Cautious outlook ahead of budget</h2>Mr. Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd notes that the markets began the week on a subdued note and ended nearly unchanged, reflecting caution ahead of the <keyword id="19908389" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="union-budget" source="keywords">Union Budget</keyword>. The Nifty index opened lower and fluctuated within a range before closing at the 24,509.25 level. Initially, weak global cues and pressure on index heavyweights like Reliance and Kotak Bank following their earnings reports weighed on sentiment, he said. "However, the strength in banking major HDFC Bank, in reaction to its results, and continued buoyancy in IT heavyweight Infosys Ltd offset the negativity. Sector-wise, auto, metal, and pharma edged higher, while realty and IT were among the top losers. With all eyes on the Union Budget, volatility is expected to remain high on Tuesday. We thus maintain a cautious stance and recommend a hedged approach. Traders should seek buying opportunities in low-beta counters, especially in the defensive sectors, and remain selective in other areas", continued Mishra. Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares highlights that the oversold condition coupled with a bullish divergence in the RSI saved the Index from a steep fall. Mixed market activity was seen where the mid and small caps soared higher while the index stayed in a well-maintained range to end the session at 24,509.25 with a marginal loss of 21.65 points.Auto and pharma sectors advanced over 1% to become outperformers of the day while realty was the major laggard followed by IT. "Considering the Union Budget outcome, wild swings can be expected on both sides where 24,200 will be considered as immediate support while the higher side seems to be capped at 24,800", explained Gaggar.

With CPI numbers coming in yesterday, retail inflation dipped to a 5-year low, to 3.5% in July 2024. Says Suman Chowdhury, Executive Director and Chief Economist Acuité Ratings &amp; Research, “given the very strong base effect at play, the headline CPI inflation has suddenly dropped to 3.5% YoY from 5.1% in July’24. While this print is a 5 year low, it’s perhaps too early to celebrate such a low figure. Expectedly, the annualized food inflation has also started to taper with the onset of the monsoon from 9.4% in June to 5.4% in July on the back of a precipitous fall in vegetable inflation to 6.8% from 29.3%. Clearly, these are also the impact of the base factor since sequential inflation remains significant in both overall food inflation and vegetable inflation at 2.8% and 14.1% respectively". "One important takeaway is the rise of core inflation to 3.4% in July vs 3.1% in Jun'24 on the back of a rise in telecom tariffs and gold prices. In our opinion, core inflation has bottomed out and is likely to move higher towards 4.0% amidst strong economic activity", she continued.
