<keyword id="696744" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hdfc-asset-management-company" source="Orion">HDFC Asset Management Company</keyword> (AMC) on Monday reported a 52% jump in profit after tax (PAT) at ₹477.5 crore for three months ended June 2023. In comparison, the asset management firm posted a PAT of ₹314.2 crore in the year-ago period, <keyword id="45123" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hdfc" source="Orion">HDFC</keyword> AMC said in a regulatory filing. Revenue from operations rose 10% to ₹574.5 crore in the quarter under review, from ₹521.6 crore in the April-June quarter of the preceding fiscal. With a market share of 11.3 %, HDFC AMC's average assets under management (AAUM) grew to ₹ 4.86 lakh crore in the first quarter ended June 30, 2023 from ₹ 4.15 lakh crore in the year-ago period. The company serves a mutual fund customer base of 71 lakh individuals, with a total of 122 lakh live accounts. Shares of HDFC AMC settled marginally lower at ₹ 2,498.15 apiece on the BSE.

Among the top mutual fund companies Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC reported a 13% on-year decline in net profit to ₹136 crore from ₹156 crore last year. “While we are constructive on Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC’s strong and diversified distribution network, given rising competitive intensity, we believe yields will plummet faster than assets under management (AUM) growth, posing a high risk to earnings from negative operating leverage,” said analysts at HDFC Securities. The brokerage house downgraded the rating on the company’s stock to ‘Add’ from ‘Buy’. As a result, shares of Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC have been the top loser among its peers, slipping 21% in 2023 so far. Rival HDFC Asset Management Company posted a sequential 2% rise in profit to ₹376 crore in the March quarter while its revenue fell 3% to ₹541 crore. However, in the case of HDFC AMC, analysts feel that the impact of the total expense ratio (TER) changes on the company’s stock may be limited due to strong AUM growth and potential benefits from its HDFC Bank parentage. Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) is the parent company of HDFC AMC that is expected to complete its merger with HDFC Bank by <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/wealth/borrow/hdfc-hdfc-bank-merger-how-will-it-impact-hdfc-home-loan-borrowers-will-home-loan-interest-rates-go-down/articleshow/99978517.cms">July this year as per reports. </a> “While we remain watchful of the proposed changes in the TER structure and HDFC AMC’s stock has corrected by c.9% over the last 3 months on fears regarding the changes, we expect the impact to be limited and current valuations (20x FY25 EPS) adequately factor in the expected cut in earnings. HDFC AMC is our top pick in the space and the stock can see a meaningful rerating in the near to medium term driven by robust AUM growth and potential benefits from HDFC Bank parentage,” said analysts at JM Financial. On the other hand, <keyword id="193636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uti-amc" source="Orion">UTI AMC</keyword>’s profit grew strongly to ₹86 crore in March quarter from ₹60 crore in the previous quarter and ₹54 crore during the same period last year. However, Nippon Life Asset Management’s profits were flat sequentially at ₹198.96 crore while revenue from operations fell nearly 2% at ₹325 crore. As a result, shares of all the listed asset management companies have been in the red so far in 2023 underperforming the market. The amendment in the Finance Bill that proposed to do away with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/debt-schemes-of-mfs-lose-edge-over-bank-deposits-as-budget-proposes-to-scrap-ltcg-indexation-benefits/articleshow/98965932.cms">long-term capital gains tax benefits on debt investments</a> was the latest trigger that impacted the mutual fund companies. As per the proposed changes in the Finance Bill, investors in debt funds will have to pay tax according to their income slabs. Investors had so far benefited from indexation while calculating long-term capital gains from debt funds but this will now longer be available effective 1 April. Adding to it, as per reports, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is considering taking action against big fund houses that charge very high expense ratios from their customers. Currently as per SEBI’s rules, mutual funds can charge a total expense ratio (TER) of up to 2.25%, if the AUM reaches ₹500 crore. However, the regulator might now reduce this expense amount to benefit investors. Also, since distributors earn more commission by selling new funds, there are cases of mis-selling. Mutual fund company stocks bleed this year, thanks to tax hit on debt funds and strict expense ratio norms

Equity benchmark <keyword id="6484188" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="sensex" source="Orion">Sensex</keyword> rose over 100 points in opening trade on Monday, tracking gains in index heavyweights <keyword id="6357149" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hdfc-bank" source="Orion">HDFC Bank</keyword>, <keyword id="6355199" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-industries" source="Orion">Reliance Industries</keyword> and <keyword id="6407278" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kotak-bank" source="Orion">Kotak Bank</keyword> amid a positive trend in global markets. After opening over 100 points lower, the 30-share Sensex recovered the losses and gained 100.22 points or 0.17 per cent to trade higher at 60,159.28. According to an Emkay Global note, TCS Q2 operating performance missed expectations, reporting lower-than-expected revenue and earnings before interest, taxes and corporate overhead or management (EBITM). The company on Friday reported a 14.1 per cent rise in consolidated net profit to Rs 9,624 crore in the September 2021 quarter. Following suit, all IT stocks in the index were trading in the red. In the previous session, the 30-share index jumped 381.23 points or 0.64 per cent to close at 60,059.06, and Nifty rose 104.85 points or 0.59 per cent to its fresh closing peak of 17,895.20. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital market as they offloaded shares worth Rs 64.01 crore on Friday, as per exchange data. <ul><li>Shares of the firm have delivered 625% returns in the last one year on account of a spike in demand for broadband services in homes and at enterprises.</li><li><keyword id="166938" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tejas-networks" source="Orion">Tejas Networks</keyword> designs, develops and sells high-performance networking products to telecommunications service providers, internet service providers, utilities, defence and government entities in over 75 countries.</li><li>The company, waiting for the government's approval for its application for production-linked incentives, has gained over 39% in last one month.</li></ul>With increasing demand for internet services and growing trend in data consumption, Tejas Networks, the optical networking products maker for telecom and internet services providers, has given multifold returns to investors in the last one year. In the last one year, due to pandemic and remote working scenarios across the world, investors spotted an opportunity in this space, which is why shares of the Bengaluru-based broadband service provider jumped 625% in the last one year. The company ⁠— where marquee investor Vijay Kedia has 1.18% stake ⁠— waiting for the government's approval for its application for production-linked incentives has gained over 15% in just the last five days. <div type="image" title="tejas" height="900" width="1200" msid="86751640" hostid="261"></div> Tejas Networks designs, develops and sells high-performance networking products to telecommunications service providers, internet service providers, utilities, defence and government entities in over 75 countries. As of January 2021, there were 4.66 billion active internet users worldwide which is 59.5% of the global population, according to <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/617136/digital-population-worldwide/">Statista</a>. This shows the vast opportunities in the internet services for such players. Also, Tejas supplies products to the Government of India's BharatNet project to provide broadband internet to all of India's gram panchayats and has helped connect 40,000 villages so far. 5G rollout awards strong orders to Tejas Networks The government’s plan to roll out 5G in the country brought visibility to the company’s services as Tata Sons approached stake in the company this year. In July, Tata Sons subsidiary Panatone Finvest said it will buy 69% stake in the company through an investment of ₹1,884 crore. <div type="javascript" title="Custom" contenttype="Image"><cdata><![CDATA[ ]]></cdata></div> The company will utilise the capital infusion by Tata Sons to invest in research and development, sales and marketing, people, infrastructure and to enhance its manufacturing and operational capabilities to cater to this large market opportunity, and for other general corporate purposes. Tejas Networks sees a very large opportunity in the telecom sector both in India and global markets with the new cycle of investments in 5G and fiber-based broadband rollouts. Moreover, telecom operator Bharti Airtel has selected the telecom equipment maker to expand its optical network capacity in key metropolitan markets.Bharti Airtel has been expanding its network capacity as part of its 5G readiness while catering to increasing data consumption by consumers. Analysts expect strong future growth for the company because of a good order book and continuing demand for broadband services. “Strong order book of ₹6.79 billion provides revenue visibility for calendar year 2022,” said a report by Axis Capital. “Q4 (Jan-Mar 2021) revenue was a positive surprise as it picked up better than expectations. Revenue may remain lumpy in the initial quarter of FY22 due to COVID impact and muted government business. However, we expect it to pick up during the year, as international business gains momentum post COVID. Company also stands to benefit from demand from home and office broadband, metro capacity expansion, network modernization and critical infrastructure,” added the report. Approval in <keyword id="53367" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pli" source="Orion">PLI</keyword> scheme to add wings to the company While, the government is trying to promote local manufacturing of telecom gear through the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, companies like Tejas Networks, Sterlite Technologies etc., stand to be beneficiaries. <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/tata-takes-tejas-stake-for-telecom-gear-foray-11627584389079.html">Reportedly</a>, curbs on Chinese vendors such as Huawei in India and many developed countries, including the US, UK and the European Union, over security concerns, have opened the door wider for firms such as Tejas to win business for cost-efficient equipment and software solutions. Tejas has applied for a PLI application under the telecom equipment category, the company mentioned in its latest investor call. The government has so far approved a ₹12,195-crore PLI scheme for telecom gear manufacturing in India. The PLI scheme for telecom gear will cover manufacturing of equipment such as core transmission products, 4G, 5G radio access network and other wireless gear. Under the PLI scheme for telecom equipment, the government will give 4-6 per cent incentive to eligible companies on incremental sales of manufactured goods for five years. The company is the third trust in India to go for an initial public offering (IPO) — the other two being Embassy Office Parks REIT and Mindspace Business Parks REIT. However, the issue hasn’t received any major response in the first three hours of opening. According to the stock-exchange data, the total subscription stood at 2% of the total offer value. Brookfield REIT’s initial portfolio consists of four large campus-format office parks, located in Mumbai, Gurugram, Noida and Kolkata. And it has a list of marquee tenants -- Barclays, Bank of America Continuum, RBS, Accenture, Tata Consultancy Services and Cognizant -- that have leased the commercial space with 75% of gross contracted rentals. According to Axis Capital, its initial portfolio's completed area has a same-store committed occupancy of 92%. But the concern could be from the fact that a significant portion of revenue being derived from a limited number of tenants and sectors. <div type="image" title="REIT tenants" msid="80667920" hostid="261"></div> And the operations of the company may be adversely affected if one or more of these large tenants seek to prematurely terminate lease or any of the sectors in which the tenants of its initial portfolio are concentrated. Mark-to-market headroom provides cash stability The company has a weighted average lease to expiry 7.1 years, which provides stability to its initial portfolio's cash flows. Other than that, it is also well-positioned to achieve further organic growth through a combination of contractual lease escalations,36% mark-to-market headroom to in-place rents, lease-up of vacant space. The mark-to-market headroom practice involves adjusting the value of an asset to reflect its value as determined by current market conditions. Concerns: Weak financials, muted growth and high debt on books The company has incurred losses in FY20 and has not paid out any dividends, they expect to pay a yield of 7.5% in FY23, which according to Angel Broking is “aggressive” and may be difficult to achieve. “Post the IPO there will also be a debt reduction of ₹3,575 crore for the company which will bring down the overall debt. However due to the current uncertainties around Covid-19 and proliferation of work from home we expect that demand for commercial real estate to be muted,” the brokerage said. The report further added that it would take a long time for the company to increase its revenue as REIT has under development property of 0.1 marginal standing facility only along with its 92% of committed property which has already been leased out. The commercial spaces could see slowdown in demand Commercial office space was the least impacted segment in real estate amid the COVID-19 outbreak. However, other reports have highlighted that the increasing trend in work from home (WFH) can lead to a higher vacancy in key market geographies and can create a slowdown in demand for commercial space in the near term.
