New York, <keyword id="4751090" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hydroxychloroquine">Hydroxychloroquine</keyword>, an anti-malarial drug termed potential "game changer" for COVID-19 by US President <keyword id="6354484" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Donald-Trump">Donald Trump</keyword>, showed no benefit in treating patients with the disease in Veterans Health Administration medical centres in the US, says a study. In fact, the risk of death was found to be higher in those treated with hydroxychloroquine than in the group that included patients not treated with the drug, according to the findings published in the preprint repository medRxiv. For the study, the researchers performed a retrospective analysis of data from patients hospitalised with confirmed SARSCoV-2 infection in all US Veterans Health Administration medical centres until April 11. Patients were categorised based on their exposure to hydroxychloroquine alone (HC) or with the antibiotic azithromycin (HC+AZ) as treatments in addition to standard supportive management for Covid-19. A total of 368 patients were evaluated. Rates of death in the hydroxychloroquine alone group was 27.8 per cent. The rate of death in the hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin group was 22.1 per cent and in the no hydroxychloroquine, it was even lower, 11.4 per cent, the results showed. The researchers found that the risk of ventilation was similar in the HC group and in the HC+AZ group, compared to the no HC group. "In this study, we found no evidence that use of hydroxychloroquine, either with or without azithromycin, reduced the risk of mechanical ventilation in patients hospitalised with Covid-19," said the study carried out by <keyword id="9092728" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="joseph-magagnoli">Joseph Magagnoli</keyword> from Dorn Research Institute, Columbia VA Health Care System and colleagues. "An association of increased overall mortality was identified in patients treated with hydroxychloroquine alone. These findings highlight the importance of awaiting the results of ongoing prospective, randomized, controlled studies before widespread adoption of these drugs," the researchers concluded. Despite limited and conflicting data on the use of hydroxychloroquine in patients with COVID-19, the US Food and Drug Administration has authorised the emergency use of this drug when clinical trials are unavailable or infeasible. Hydroxychloroquine, alone or in combination with azithromycin, is being used in Covid-19 therapy based on anecdotal and limited observational evidence in several countries.

This makes it look as if the states are testing more vigorously for active infections than they are, and confounds the data on whether cases are actually declining — which is one of the key determinants of whether the state has the outbreak controlled. In short, the data manipulation is making us stupider. The leaders and citizens of Texas, Virginia, and Vermont know less about the pandemic they presumably want to control.This is hardly the first example of government sources manipulating COVID-19 data, usually to help win an argument. Georgia's Department of Public Health published a chart that <a href="https://www.ajc.com/news/state--regional-govt--politics/just-cuckoo-state-latest-data-mishap-causes-critics-cry-foul/182PpUvUX9XEF8vO11NVGO/">literally flipped dates out of order</a> to show a steady decline in cases. <keyword id="6357385" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="florida">Florida</keyword>'s top data scientist said this week <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2020/05/19/859119865/florida-ousts-top-covid-19-data-scientist">she was fired for refusing to embroider data</a>. Two weeks ago, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/arizona-halts-partnership-with-experts-predicting-coronavirus-cases-would-continue-to-mount/2020/05/06/d7a97c46-8fc2-11ea-a9c0-73b93422d691_story.html">Arizona's governor</a> tried to sideline analysts whose data predicted the state's outbreak peak was still to come. It's not new for politicians to seek to manipulate data to tell the story they want to tell. After all, there are lies, damned lies, and statistics. Still, when it comes to this pandemic, the data games are frustrating and perverse. Manipulating the data doesn't change the actual facts. The sick people are still sick, the dead people are just as dead. It simply covers those facts with a veil of confusion. The purpose of data is to provide guidance that helps our leaders make smart policy decisions. The data themselves are not the policy. The data exist to help us know whether reopening or locking down or whatever is working. Data are a tool. Would you want to use a tape measure where the inches were an inch and a quarter long? That's what these officials are doing. Manipulating the data blinds and deceives the policymakers in addition to the public. Instead of using the data to guide them toward policy — the purpose of the data — they are deciding on policy without data, and fudging the data to support their decision. It's backwards. I'm a clinical psychologist with extensive experience working with medically ill patients - both in acute care hospitals and elsewhere. I've been part of medical decision-making teams via bioethics committees and been part of transplant teams. In my experience, taking a drug prophylactically that has no evidence base and that has significant side-effects (Q-T prolongation is probably the most serious) reflects more on the President's misunderstanding of the drug, the illness, and good prescribing practices. In addition, I wonder about the judgment of the physician who counseled Mr. Trump. I am sure there was a weighing of the benefits and costs, however, given the context, I cannot imagine there was not some not-so-subtle pressure to allow the president to take the medication.This is poor social modeling. As you point out, Trump bears some responsibility for those who might suffer negative consequences of taking the medication. And as always, his lack of judgment in these matters stands out. Sure, one may say that since there is no evidence for/against prophylactic use to prevent COVID-19 disease it's "rational" to go ahead and give it a try. As the President has said: "What have you got to lose."
