A consignment of hydroxychloroquine from India arrived in the United States on Saturday, days after New Delhi lifted a ban on export of the anti-malaria drug, seen as a possible cure for COVID-19, to the US and some other countries on humanitarian grounds. For example, because it employed data from comprehensive electronic medical records (the VA Informatics and Computing Infrastructure, or VINCI), rather than administrative health insurance claims, they were able to apply rigorously identified covariates and outcomes. Additionally, because the data came from an integrated national healthcare system, the findings were less susceptible to biases that might occur in a single-centre or regional study. In the study, the research team included data from 807 people hospitalised with Covid-19 at Veterans Affairs medical centres around the country. About half, 395 patients, did not receive HCQ at any time during their hospitalisation. Among those who did, 198 patients were treated with HCQ and 214 were treated with both hydroxychloroquine and <keyword id="1056953" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="azithromycin">azithromycin</keyword>. Most of the patient's given hydroxychloroquine, about 86 per cent, received it before being put on a mechanical ventilator.After adjustment for clinical characteristics, the risk of death from any cause was higher in the HCQ group but not in the HCQ + azithromycin group when these were compared with the no-HCQ group. The researchers also found that the length of hospital stay was 33 per cent longer in the HCQ group and 38 per cent longer in the HCQ + azithromycin group than in the no-HCQ group. Pre-existing conditions such as cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and diabetes were relatively common and similar across all groups, the study said. However, the researchers noted that the findings don't provide insight into the use of these drugs in the outpatient setting or as prophylaxis. Meanwhile, on June 4, the World Health Organisation said that HCQ will return to the solidarity trial for the potential treatment of coronavirus disease. The world health body had temporarily suspended the usage of HCQ from the solidarity trial for coronavirus treatment on May 25 soon after a study published in one of the most reliable medical journals which had suggested that the drug could cause more fatalities among Covid-19 patients. With 1,897,239 confirmed cases and 109,127 deaths, the US currently accounts for the highest number of infections and fatalities in the world, according to a tally by <keyword id="9356450" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-johns-hopkins-univerity">the Johns Hopkins Univerity</keyword>.

COVID-19: HCQ consignment from India reaches US

New York, <keyword id="4751090" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hydroxychloroquine">Hydroxychloroquine</keyword>, an anti-malarial drug termed potential "game changer" for COVID-19 by US President <keyword id="6354484" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Donald-Trump">Donald Trump</keyword>, showed no benefit in treating patients with the disease in Veterans Health Administration medical centres in the US, says a study. In fact, the risk of death was found to be higher in those treated with hydroxychloroquine than in the group that included patients not treated with the drug, according to the findings published in the preprint repository medRxiv. For the study, the researchers performed a retrospective analysis of data from patients hospitalised with confirmed SARSCoV-2 infection in all US Veterans Health Administration medical centres until April 11. Patients were categorised based on their exposure to hydroxychloroquine alone (HC) or with the antibiotic azithromycin (HC+AZ) as treatments in addition to standard supportive management for Covid-19. A total of 368 patients were evaluated. Rates of death in the hydroxychloroquine alone group was 27.8 per cent. The rate of death in the hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin group was 22.1 per cent and in the no hydroxychloroquine, it was even lower, 11.4 per cent, the results showed. The researchers found that the risk of ventilation was similar in the HC group and in the HC+AZ group, compared to the no HC group. "In this study, we found no evidence that use of hydroxychloroquine, either with or without azithromycin, reduced the risk of mechanical ventilation in patients hospitalised with Covid-19," said the study carried out by <keyword id="9092728" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="joseph-magagnoli">Joseph Magagnoli</keyword> from Dorn Research Institute, Columbia VA Health Care System and colleagues. "An association of increased overall mortality was identified in patients treated with hydroxychloroquine alone. These findings highlight the importance of awaiting the results of ongoing prospective, randomized, controlled studies before widespread adoption of these drugs," the researchers concluded. Despite limited and conflicting data on the use of hydroxychloroquine in patients with COVID-19, the US Food and Drug Administration has authorised the emergency use of this drug when clinical trials are unavailable or infeasible. Hydroxychloroquine, alone or in combination with azithromycin, is being used in Covid-19 therapy based on anecdotal and limited observational evidence in several countries.

London, May 30 (IANS) Medial journal The Lancet issued a correction on a large observational study that linked use of anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine with increased death risk in Covid-19 patients, after more than 100 scientists and medical professionals raised questions about integrity of data analysed in the study. The study published on May 22 led the World Health Organization to temporarily suspend the trial of hydroxychloroquine on Covid-19 patients. In the correction issued on Friday, Lancet said that one hospital self-designated as belonging to the Australasia continental designation should have been assigned to the Asian continental designation. In their open letter to the authors of the study and the editor of Lancet, the scientists pointed out that "data from Australia are not compatible with government reports.". The study was informed by data from healthcare data analytics company Surgisphere, the founder of which, Sapan Desai, is one of the four authors of the paper. "There was no mention of the countries or hospitals that contributed to the data source and no acknowledgments to their contributions," the scientist said in their open letter. "A request to the authors for information on the contributing centres was denied. Data from Australia are not compatible with government reports. Surgisphere have since stated this was an error of classification of one hospital from Asia. This indicates the need for further error checking throughout the database," they added. The study analysed data from nearly 15,000 patients with Covid-19 and 81,000 controls. The open letter lists 10 major concerns about statistical analysis and data integrity. "The authors have not adhered to standard practices in the machine learning and statistics community. They have not released their code or data," the letter stated. The Lancet is among the many signatories to a statement on data sharing for Covid-19 studies. Surgisphere in a statement said that its data use agreements do not allow it to make some data public. FDA warns against co-administration of remdesivir with CQ or HCQ for COVID-19 patients

Yangon, May 5 () India on Tuesday provided 200,000 hydroxychloroquine tablets and other medical equipment to Myanmar to aid its fight against the deadly coronavirus.Indian Ambassador to Myanmar Saurabh Kumar handed over the medical supplies to the officials of the Ministry of Health and Sports at Yangon Airport, the Indian embassy said in a press statement.Besides the 200,000 antimalarial hydroxychloroquine tablets, the medical supplies include surgical gloves, body bags, minor surgical sets and thermal scanners."The government of India stands in solidarity with the people and the government of Myanmar in the wake of the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic," the statement said.The medical supplies are reflective of the united effort needed to combat this disease, it said."The contribution is indicative of the traditionally warm and friendly ties between India and Myanmar, and would augment Myanmar's determined efforts to fight the pandemic," it said.
