<ul><li><keyword id="141968" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HCL-Tech">HCL Tech</keyword> is encouraging its employees to come into the office for work, at least one day a week over the next three months. </li><li>By the end of December, they hope to achieve 20% workforce occupancy in their offices. </li><li>In an exclusive interview with Business Insider India, <keyword id="30331" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HCL-Technologies">HCL Technologies</keyword> CHRO Apparao VV explains who can come back to work, precautionary measures, and whether or not the canteen will be open. </li></ul>COVID-19 may still be looming large but HCL Technologies believes it has the right tools in place to help its employees come back to offices — one day a week at a time. “We’re telling employees to come at least once in a week to start with, and probably by December, you can do one or two days in a week,” Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) Apparao VV told Business Insider in an exclusive interview. The company is currently operating with around 5% to 6% of its staff in office. By December, they hope to bring the overall number up to 20%. Not everyone is being asked to come back to work HCL Tech may be looking to get its offices hustling with activity again, but they’re not asking everyone to come back to work. Employees who have children below the age of five, or parents older than 50 years old can continue to work from home. And employees who are older than 50 to 55 years are also exempt. Apparao explained that this plan will be implemented in phases. And, on no given day will any of the company's development centres exceed 20% capacity. Floor marshalls and pre-ordered meals In preparation for people returning to work, HCL Tech has removed chairs to ensure that at least 3 feet of distance is maintained. Common rooms are getting cleaned up, cabs are being arranged and even ‘floor marshalls’ have been designated to ensure enforcement of discipline. “We won’t be leaving anything to chance,” said Apparao. Even when it comes to eating food, employees have to log in the previous night, and share their preferences. Because of the pandemic, only vendors will provide the food. The options may be a little limited, but it’s a necessary precaution. HCL Tech is also looking to hire ‘<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/careers/news/hcl-to-hire-more-jobs-and-increase-wages-over-next-three-months-9000-more-freshers-to-be-onboarded-by-march/articleshow/78696285.cms">significantly</a>’ over the next three months with the aim of onboarding another 9,000 freshers by the end of March. The Pittsburgh workers, employed by contractor HCL Technologies, protested on Monday by wearing black to the office cafeteria."We know that leadership clearly values the health and safety of our workplaces and communities," a group of Google workers wrote in the document that circulated internally on Tuesday. "But when it comes to our 'extended workforce,' Google and its contracting agencies are falling short."Google has around 119,000 employees throughout the world - and a similar number of temporary workers, contractors, and external vendors (TVCs). Google's policies on TVCs have proved immensely contentious over the last few years, with critics complaining they amount to a "second-class" workforce denied the perks and privileges afforded to proper Google employees.As COVID-19 (the disease caused by the coronavirus) has spread, sickening more than 181,000 people and killing more than 7,500, Google has taken steps to enable its workforce to work remotely and lock down its facilities. But some employees are concerned that the company's efforts don't do enough for TVC workers."We're working closely with all our vendor partners to increase the ability for their employees to work from home by rolling out remote access as quickly as possible," Google spokesperson Jenn Kaiser said in an email to Business Insider. "HCL employees in Google Pittsburgh were approved for remote access today and no HCL employees will be required to come into the Pittsburgh office starting tomorrow."<h2>"No one should be in a Google office unless absolutely necessary."</h2>The memo's writers - who describe themselves as "a coalition of employees and TVCs who want Google to be Googley - issued two demands: That "no one should be in a Google office unless absolutely necessary," and that "every employee of [Google's parent company] Alphabet, whether direct or contracted, must have complete confidence they can stay home with no disruption to pay."The memo highlighted the office in Pittsburgh, which has contract workers from HCL: "Workers who are contracted through HCL were expected to come into work this week, despite Pittsburgh declaring a state of emergency, closing its schools, and urging non-essential businesses to close." TVCs are increasingly being forced to chose between risking infection by going to work, or losing wages."In a statement, HCL spokesperson Meenakshi Benjwal said: "HCL employs close to 150,000 people worldwide and 20,000 in the United States and our employee's health and safety is our top priority. We are taking an abundance of caution by deploying new sick-leave and remote work policies to help our employees take better care of themselves and their families and help prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus. <ul><li>For the past few months, organizations have been trying to put their best foot forward to ensure the safety and health of its employees, to weather the <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">Covid-19</keyword> storm.</li><li><keyword id="30331" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HCL-Technologies">HCL Technologies</keyword> was quick to put various measures in place to ensure its employees as well as their families were safe.</li><li><keyword id="9574502" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="arthur-filip">Arthur Filip</keyword>, Executive Vice President, Sales Transformation &amp; Marketing, HCL Technologies talks to us about all that has been happening at the organization in the last few months and why he believes that compassion and empathy have been his biggest lessons during the Covid-19 crisis.</li></ul> For most organizations across the world, the priority after the Covid-19 situation arose was to make sure that their employees and their families were safe. HCL Technologies too, ensured that the safety of its employees and their families was taken care of from the very outset. It started a 24×7 healthcare helpline for its employees across the globe which included all possible healthcare services and provided them for free. It also formed a special global task force to actively monitor the situation and take proactive remedial actions in consultation with external agencies. The organization also ensured that there was proactive communications with all its clients around the world, to keep them updated and provide them clear information while at the same time seeking feedback on emerging needs of their companies’ and their customers’ requirements. It was perhaps the speed at which all these measures were taken that helped HCL Technologies sail through, shared Arthur Filip, Executive Vice President, Sales Transformation &amp; Marketing, HCL Technologies in a recent conversation with Ad &amp; Media Insider. While telling us how the organization has been dealing with the evolving situation, he also told us that empathy, compassion and speed were some attributes that helped the organization immensely. He also shared how during the crisis, the role of marketing evolved and attained a higher purpose. Filip has also been a champion of gender diversity. He also tells us all that HCL Technologies, as an organization has been doing, to ensure that it is more inclusive. Excerpts: Q) How have the last few months been for HCL from a business perspective? While nobody had anticipated an event like this, were you as an organization prepared to face the challenges that the pandemic and the <keyword id="91743" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="lockdown">lockdown</keyword> brought with it? We have a very cohesive global leadership team, one that’s very tuned into the global and local environments where we do business and have employees. We started tracking the situation in early January, and by January 26 had launched a full-blown executive crisis management function that gathered frequently to proactively manage the situation. This early governance effort, combined with transparent communication with our employees, customers and communities, along with partnerships with leading health and government officials around the world, allowed HCL to achieve stable operations very early on in the crisis. Given the nature of our business, we typically plan and prepare ourselves for a wide range of scenarios to ensure <keyword id="2410018" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="business-continuity">business continuity</keyword>. Our first and foremost priority has been our employees and their families. We maximized our work from home capabilities very early in this crisis and continue to do so. From the employees’ front, we started a 24×7 healthcare helpline for our employees across the globe, in association with our sister company, <keyword id="2048340" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HCL-Healthcare">HCL Healthcare</keyword>. This Covid-19 helpline includes all possible healthcare services that are completely free, secure and confidential for HCL employees and their families. We also formed a special global task force to actively monitor the situation and take proactive remedial actions in consultation with external agencies (International SOS). We made sure to maintain proactive communications with all clients around the world from the early onset of COVID-19 in order to keep them updated and provide them clear information while at the same time seeking feedback on emerging needs of their companies’ and their customers’ requirements. We also developed a COVID-19 Information Center with the theme #TakeCareHCL to communicate with our employees across the globe with the underlying message that we are one family and together in these unprecedented times. The theme #TakeCareHCL underpins a series of employee communications and engagement initiatives that not only aims to inform them of the new practices but also foster employee comfort with positive messages of care, appreciation, and encouragement in these stressful times. Q) As a leader, what have some of your biggest learnings from this experience been? Empathy, compassion and speed. These are attributes that have helped us in an environment where it’s hard to see a finish line, the circumstances can change by the minute, and there is the possibility of real danger to people. Our CEO, CVK, set a strong tone of empathy, safety and people-first – right at the beginning and this clarity helped our leaders and employees move forward with resilience. Thinking about empathy and compassion – this is a time that’s so new and different that we made sure to bring alongnot only the strongest people but those who are most vulnerable within our company and within our neighbourhoods. It’s a spirit of “Do the Right Thing, All the Time”. It is our responsibility to ensure that our customers, particularly those depending on us for critical services—such as healthcare, pharmacy, food supply and distribution, and civic amenities such as power, safety and governance—remain up and running with the requisite IT support as the world battles the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. This sort of agility and stepping up to help deliver essential services have humbled us with appreciations from customers. Last but not the least, listening to employees and customers, and responding to their needs have been the most important part while fighting through the crisis. Q) At adverse times like these, do you think the purpose of marketing evolves to something broader? Yes, certainly. As a new and unprecedented situation, it required us to deal with it in a unique manner. I feel that marketing has changed and taken on an even higher purpose during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it will further continue to change when a “new normal” sets in for all of us. While these certainly are challenging times, we believe in converting the crisis into an opportunity to learn, unlearn and grow further. We feel that in these times marketing goes beyond the usual strategies that we implement. Our prime focus has been instilling confidence in our customers, by providing them with the means to cope with the situation and going beyond to help them. Being empathetic and prioritizing customer experience has been something that we have been working on relentlessly since the very start. Also, we did a client satisfaction survey to measure the effectiveness of our COVID response. And it showed 99% of the respondents agreed that our business continuity measures were very effective or effective. We were quite humbled to hear that feedback. We are equally humbled by our employee feedback on the company’s effort towards supporting them, their well-being and ensuring a lot of proactive direction, communication, engagement. Going forward, we continue to remain very committed to three priorities - Employee wellbeing, Client support and Community impact. Q) Since you are leading both marketing and sales transformation, what have a few of your priorities been as a leader at the organization? I have many responsibilities, but I sum it up in the way I wake up each morning, which is thinking about the brand essence of HCL – who are we, what do we stand for, and what do we do as a company of 150,000+ professionals to make the world a better place to live in. This has certainly taken on some new meaning during this pandemic. There are several key themes that permeate throughout our efforts –translating the great capabilities and potential of digital technologies to rapidly transform businesses, humanizing technology, finding new ways of working across all industries through sustainability, and providing a voice and spurring innovation through our platforms and ecosystem. Q) You have been a champion of gender diversity. How have you been able to make sure HCL has a diverse workforce and an inclusive environment? As a company we have a tremendous history over 44 years, building an incredible journey filled with professional and lifechanging opportunities. We realized early on that the healthiest organizations are comprised of great people from all walks of life –from genders, to nations, to persuasions, race, orientation and more. Our companybelieves in equality andis fully committed to build and strengthen a more inclusive and equitable workplace. Diversity is more than a metric to be monitored and managed. It is an inherent inclusive attitude towards the way we look at the world, the workplace and the unique individual. I personally believe that gender diversity is a driving force of competitive businesses, and there are no longer excuses to get it right. In the area of gender diversity, we have women-specific programs at all levels of the companythat cater to their career development needs. We have unique programs like Women Connect which is an employee-led group of active women who contribute in shaping the gender agenda and are also the catalysts to improve gender inclusion at workplace. HCL wants to hire 12,000 freshers this year By March 2021, <keyword id="141968" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HCL-Tech">HCL Tech</keyword> plans to have a total of 12,000 freshers on board. This is a step up from last year when the company added around 8,100 freshers overall. In the second quarter, HCL Tech added an overall 2,798 employees to its roster between July and September, of which 1,578 were freshers. “This is lower than what we anticipated because of COVID-19 situation and the low availability of people,” said Apparao. In the first quarter, the number of freshers added was around 1,200. Many students in line with offer letters were not onboarded yet since their final exams were postponed during the lockdown. Nonetheless, it still means there’s still a deficit of around 9,000 freshers before HCL Tech can meet its target. Yesterday, the Forbes fourth annual list of the ‘Forbes best employers’ ranked HCL Tech as the 30th best employer globally in 2020. This puts it among the top multinationals headquartered in India for employees. Vijayakumar lauded the company’s employees for being one of the five primary factors that led to the IT services behemoth’s growth despite the impact of COVID-19.

HCL acquires leading Australian IT firm DWS

New Delhi, Mar 30 () HCL Technologies on Monday said it is not expecting any significant impact on business in March quarter on account of the coronavirus outbreak, and that booking during the period has largely been "on track" with significant part of closures happening in January. HCL Tech said it had invoked 'Business Continuity Plan' and 'Risk Management Framework' quite early to minimise the impact on its employees and clients, and added that its exposure to the more-impacted verticals is "not significant". "While the impact on this quarter's numbers is yet to be quantified, we don't expect it to be significant. Our exposure to the more impacted verticals are not significant. Booking during this quarter has largely been on track as significant part of closures happened in January," HCL Tech said in a statement on the likely impact on business. The company said its business model is a healthy mix of recurring product revenues, managed services and discretionary spend-led professional services, and that its exposure to verticals like Oil and Gas, Travel and Hospitality, High-End Retail is in single digit. "We recognise our investments in risk management systems and processes over the last several years are helping us to minimise the short-term impact and to be adequately prepared for the medium term, if it gets worse. "We are also confident our business model will help us to emerge stronger in the longer term as it has been built for resilience during tough times," it said. The company said 76 per cent of its India-based employees and 92 per cent of employees in other geographies are enabled to work from home, and that the company has not witnessed any outages or major disruption in operations with this newer format of delivery. HCL said it has a well-defined and structured pandemic policy in place that attaches highest importance to employee safety and health as well as client commitments. "We are actively engaged with our clients and have executed the client-specific and HCL internal operations-centric Business Continuity Plan that ensures continuity in delivering to our client and employee commitments," the statement said. The company is constantly reviewing the situation at hand with utmost priority and fully complying with all government advisories and recommendations. "Given the extended nature of this situation, we have looked at ensuring that we put in medium-term sustainable measures in place to ensure continuity of all our operations and client deliverables. We have been successful in achieving this as of today," the company said. It said that in some geographies, a limited set of employees are working from offices, wherever it is permissible by the government and local authorities. "It is noteworthy that we have not witnessed any outages or major disruption in operations with this newer format of work from home delivery," HCL Tech said. The company is looking to onboard 10,000 employees over the next year in the US amid the uncertainty around H-1B visa regulations. Over the last five years, TCS has hired around 21,500 employees in the country in its efforts to localise. Wipro, which recently saw a change in leadership with Thierry Delaporte at the helm, did not disclose any exact numbers but does have ‘robust’ hiring plans for the second half of the current fiscal. “Very robust hiring this quarter, both laterally and campuses. We continue to see the same momentum going forward,” said the company’s CHRO Saurabh Govil during the second-quarter earnings call. He added that given the company’s current growth momentum, hiring — laterally and via campuses — is an important part of managing that growth. This includes hiring across geographies, including India and in the new business areas, especially cloud and cybersecurity, where the demand lies. India’s IT sector is among the first to recover from the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Hiring freshers, rather than laterally, allows companies to pick up talent that’s relatively cheaper. It’s also easier to train fresh minds in-house for specific skills, especially because they are in short supply in the market. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) didn’t hire in Q1FY21 but filled in over 4,500 positions by reskilling, cross-skilling and multiskilling the company’s existing employees. New Delhi, Mar 19 () IT company HCL Technologies on Thursday said one employee from its Noida office has tested positive for coronavirus. The employee is currently in an isolation ward, the company said in a statement, adding that all prescribed protocols of sanitisation and contact tracing have been done. "Unfortunately, one employee from our Noida office has been tested positive for the Novel Coronavirus while he was in self-isolation after his return from international travel and hence our office is following all government and heath advisory protocols," HCL Tech said. "The employee is currently in an isolation ward and all measures are being taken to provide best medical care to him and support to his family," it added. The company said it is constantly monitoring all information sources including WHO alerts, complying with all government advisories globally, and has instituted a series of actions to help employees take better care of themselves and their families and help prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus. "All other employees are in good health and are being monitored continuously. We have invoked our COVID-19 Contingency Plan in all geographies which aims at maximising Work from Home to aid social distancing and also issued a travel advisory across the company, taking full precautionary measures and suspending all non-essential travel until further notice. "Our recently launched global helpline for Covid-19 provides 24X7 support to our employees," the company said. Asserting that staff and customer health is of utmost priority for the company, HCL Tech said as the virus is spreading rapidly globally, it is continuously monitoring the situation and taking all possible precautionary measures for the well-being and safety of employees and their families.
