<ul><li>TCS and HCL Tech said that they have over a 100 <keyword id="17930214" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="genai" source="Orion">genAI</keyword> opportunities in the pipeline.</li><li>They also won a few projects, most of which are in the proof-of-concept or pilot stages.</li><li>Tech companies said they built large-scale genAI capabilities, and are ready to take on projects. </li></ul>Less than a year after ChatGPT was launched, Indian tech majors have started bagging generative AI projects. Even in times when demand is slow, discretionary spends are elusive, the new-age technology is bringing work as well as excitement into the IT outsourcing market. Although the size of the deals is small at the moment, genAI has ‘captured the imagination’ of clients, say top executives of Indian IT companies. TCS and HCL Tech said that most of their <keyword id="19151325" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="genai-projects" source="Orion">genAI projects</keyword> are proof-of-concept or pilot stages. “Deal sizes are small and are mostly under $1 million where clients are trying them out. But there is potential to convert a part of our Jaguar Land Rover with AI and ML capabilities,” said N Ganapathy Subramaniam, COO of TCS at the company’s Q2 earnings press conference. HCL Tech’s MD C Vijayakumar too shared that most of the genAI deals they are bagging are either half a million or sub-$1 million deals. But they are currently working on a hundred such opportunities. “We have been selected as a partner by this very large software major for their product testing and sustenance efforts. We are providing GenAI on a private language model to improve resolution rate and speed efficiency,” said Vijayakumar. Infosys CEO Salil Parekh also shared that they are working on some proprietary large language models (LLMs). “AI is a part of almost every deal we do. And, GenAI is getting there. As it expands and more and larger enterprises get into it, it will be very exciting,” he added. A catalog of AI opportunities A few months back, all tech majors announced big moves in the generative AI space. Wipro announced that it will spend as much as $1 billion over three years to build capabilities. TCS, HCL Tech partnered with software major NVIDIA to skill their employees. As of September end, TCS said that they have 100,000-strong GenAI-ready workforce. They said they also have as many as 250 Gen AI opportunities in the pipeline. “When we started generative AI, they were all about knowledge discovery. As clients understand more, the genAI is getting more complicated. We are now working for a co-pilot for a financial advisor on what advice to give clients, help underwriting policies,” explaining K Krithivasan, CEO of TCS. TCS said that it has identified opportunities across various verticals, identified use cases and cataloged them per vertical. With that it says that it’s planning to go and engage with clients and have conversations on the same. “With this, we can have conversations with our clients – be in CRM or payments space and wealth advisory and other use cases,” explained Ganapathy. HCL Tech too is working on use cases related to banking and financial sector. “We signed a generative AI deal with a to improve their risk and compliance efforts – which is a very big effort in financial services. There are a lot of transactions happening on this front, and we have discussed how we can help,” said Vijayakumar. The buzz for cost optimization and automation deals has gone up in the last few months. Clients are looking to ramp down their expenses and intend to use tech to help with their overall cost reduction efforts. As automation gains ground, AI and ML will find more use cases – and most tech companies are confident that a little of it can spill into the new and emerging area of GenAI as well.

However, the biggest challenge of the last few months for the entire sector, the high levels of attrition, may have peaked, according to Motilal Oswal, another Mumbai-based broking firm. But the easing may not be enough to improve margins yet. “Among Tier I players, EBIT [earnings before interest and taxes] margin will be in a tight (-20 basis points to +40 basis points compared to three months ago) range, although they will see a steep decline v/s 3QFY21 profitability,” a Motilal Oswal report dated January 3 said. Here, if Accenture’s numbers are any sign, its attrition rate declined to 17%, which is still very high compared to other IT players, from 19% just three months earlier. Another factor that may play a significant role in the earnings of these software exporters is the nearly 3% weakening of the rupee during the three months between September and December. A weaker rupee magnifies the numbers for these companies who primarily earn in dollars and other foreign currencies. Infosys may show faster growth than TCS in the Dec quarter, say analysts

One of the key concerns of IT employees for leaving an organisation is muted growth in increments followed by poor employee benefits, rewards, digital skilling and so on, shows a ‘compensation benchmarking survey’ by Deloitte India and software firms’ lobby NASSCOM. The average increments for the technology services sector in India dropped from 9.5% in 2019 to 5.2% in 2020, which later increased to 8.8% in 2021 due to higher attrition rate. ever buyout by the Bengaluru-based company. The shares of Wipro have led the IT pack ever since the new chief executive officer (CEO) Thierry Delaporte took charge in June last year. The company made about $2 billion last year from IT services and if Capco delivers the same amount of revenue as it did last year, it could add another $700 million to Wipro’s topline. That’s a 35% bump up a year straight away. Expectations are built up in the stock that has gained about 30% since the Capco deal was announced in early March, and closed in April. <div type="image" title="Wirpo stock price chart" height="900" width="1200" msid="84201479" hostid="261"></div> There is also a lot of apprehension. “The execution risk is further aggravated by a weak growth performance from Capco over the last two years – even after adjusting for the drag due to COVID-19,” said Motilal Oswal in its report dated March 4. “We’re guiding revenue growth of 2% to 4% in the first quarter, outside of Capco and Ampion,” Delaporte had said during the earnings call in April. Wipro has acquired Ampion, an Australia-based provider of cyber security, devops and quality engineering services. The move will strengthen its commitment towards clients and stakeholders in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ). The acquisition will close in the quarter ending June 30, 2021. TCS, Infosys and HCL Tech will show a good quarter but Wipro’s earnings will outshine them all ⁠— here’s why

<ul><li>NASSCOM and Bank of America are at odds about the job cuts set to occur across the Indian IT industry in the ongoing fiscal year.</li><li>Bank of America asserts that up to three million people could find themselves unemployed as a result of automation while NASSCOM asserts that only 1.4 million are employed in the ‘low skill’ segment to begin with.</li><li>Companies in the Indian IT sector may continue to be ‘net hirers’ in FY22, but that doesn’t mean that people won’t be losing their jobs to software programs that can perform day-to-day tasks better than humans. </li></ul>India’s leading information technology (IT) lobby, NASSCOM, and analysts at Bank of America are sparring over how many employees in the sector are set to lose their jobs this year. Riding the increased reliance of businesses on digital technology, working from home also cuts down costs like transportation and infrastructure expenses, allowing companies to expand their margin and get a bigger bang for their buck. How Indian IT companies will ride the third wave of outsourcing Demand already exists. History also supports the conclusion that the Indian IT industry is normally a late cycle beneficiary of global changes in technology. When the first wave of outsourcing occurred in 2000 after Y2K — a computer program bug that was expected to cause havoc as the year changed from 1999 to 2000 — the Indian IT sector grew faster than 40% from a small base and minimal global penetration to Indian IT companies becoming market leaders, according to Goldman Sachs. And, again, after the 2008 GFC when the Indian IT industry grew at more than 15% for three to four years before growth returned to high single digits. “This happened both due to a shift to cloud based infrastructure and the higher use of automation tools, forcing Indian IT firms to look for new ways to sell IT solutions, shifting from labor cost arbitrage to business transformation through digital technologies,” explained the report. This is compounded by the fact that India is currently home to the largest pool of digital skilled employees in the world. <div type="image" title="snapshot-1598933384850" msid="77864293" hostid="261"></div> “We believe these digitally trained employees at Indian IT firms are likely to drive overall revenue growth, which would be the key reason for their increasing relevance amid the requirement for digital-at-scale solutions,” said Goldman Sachs. <div type="image" title="pjote chart" msid="77864307" hostid="261"></div> However, not everything is as rosy as it appears Even though businesses are looking to become more digital, recurring revenues for IT companies have been falling as compared to those vendors which specifically provide software as a service (SaaS) and infrastructure as a service (IaaS). In order to address this risk, Goldman Sachs argues that Indian IT services companies will focus more on signing large contracts that look after a client’s entire IT function. These companies also have the option to sell their solutions on a vertical-specialised platform — one that focuses on a specific industry — to increase stickiness of revenue. “Both of the above approaches require more fixed-price and outcome-based contracts with higher risk-reward,” said the global investment firm. Examples of this strategy being applied already exist with Infosys’ deal with Verizon in late 2018 and TCS’ deal with Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) for $1.5 billion in February earlier this year. Like India, the US is currently caught in the conundrum of chasing growth and rising prices. Investors in the US and Europe are on an earning streak, parking their funds in government securities at near-zero interest rates and making even more in emerging markets like India. But these low interest rates are not likely to last forever. The <keyword id="84979" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="European-Central-Bank">European Central Bank</keyword> (ECB) already announced last week that it would start purchasing bonds at a ‘significantly higher pace’ over the next three months in an attempt to get ahead of any potential inflation pressures in the coming months. The flip side of getting a big stimulus US President Joe Biden just signed the country’s $1.9 trillion stimulus package into law and is hoping that will help drive growth. But, where there is growth, there is also inflation. The odds of an interest rate hike in the US are rising The US Federal Reserve’s Chair <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/despite-us-economic-recovery-federal-reserve-firm-on-keeping-interest-rates-low-101615696984892-amp.html">Jerome Powell</a> has been clear that if it comes to choosing between growth and inflation, the goal is to see more people back at work. “Today, we’re still a long way from our goals of maximum employment and inflation averaging 2% over time,” he said during the Wall Street Journal Jobs Summit on March 4. While the Fed is positive that it won’t need to step in and adjust interest rates before 2023, some feel that may be too optimistic a point of view. “Very low interest rates, which have held down debt service costs, will eventually rise despite the Federal Reserve’s commitment to an extended period of extremely accommodative monetary policy,” said global agency <a href="https://www.fitchratings.com/research/sovereigns/us-stimulus-will-boost-growth-at-cost-of-higher-deficits-debt-09-03-2021">Fitch Ratings. </a> This is supported by the fact that Fed Funds Futures — where investors can purchase funds in advance at prices they expect to see in the future — are beginning to signal that the US’ central bank could begin increasing rates in 2022. According to DataTrek co-founder <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/news/us-stocks-are-on-the-verge-of-a-correction-as-interest-rates-begin-to-rise-datatrek-says/articleshow/81094483.cms">Nicholas Colas</a>, the odds of the Federal Reserve shifting its policy stance next year has gone from 2% to anywhere between 5% to 10%. That doesn’t necessarily mean that inflation is on the move, but the trend is “clearly not our friend.” “This means inflation is likely to be a risk well into 2022. <ul><li>India announced a new production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for IT hardware worth ₹7,250 crore on February 24.</li><li>This includes boosting the domestic production of items like laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers (PCs) and servers.</li><li>According to Union Minister <keyword id="6354886" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ravi-Shankar-Prasad">Ravi Shankar Prasad</keyword>, the Indian government wants India’s IT hardware industry to be as successful as its IT services sector on the global stage.</li></ul>The Indian government announced a new production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for IT hardware today. It includes products like laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers (PCs) and servers. “This completes the triangle of electronic manufacturing in India,” said Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad during today’s <keyword id="6355512" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="union-cabinet">Union Cabinet</keyword> briefing. The other two corners of the triangle are the PLI for mobile phones which was announced in April last year and the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/government-announces-12000-crore-pli-scheme-for-telecom-sector/articleshow/81053464.cms">PLI for telecom gear</a> announced last week. According to Prasad, the Indian government’s aim is to make Indian IT hardware as successful as <keyword id="680086" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-IT-services">Indian IT services</keyword> — which includes companies like Tata Consultancy Services (<keyword id="6357150" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tcs">TCS</keyword>), HCL Technologies, <keyword id="6354512" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword>, <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword> and <keyword id="43217" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tech-Mahindra">Tech Mahindra</keyword> — on a global scale. “Ten target sectors along with specific product lines having high growth potential were identified by NITI Aayog for implementation of PLI Schemes. PLI Scheme for IT Hardware is a further step in that direction,” said Prasad, who has the Information Technology and Electronics portfolio in the central government. The government will provide incentives worth ₹7,350 crore over the next four years. It estimates that production will hit ₹3.26 lakh crore with exports worth ₹2.45 lakh crore led by five global champions and ten national champions. “Right now, the value addition of IT hardware is around 5-10%. In the next five years, this will increase to 20-25%,” said Prasad. The direct and indirect revenues generated from production under the new PLI scheme are expected to be ₹ 15,760 crore over next 4 years. It also is expected to generate over 1,80,000 jobs during the same time period.
