A leaked official email from Maruti Suzuki shows that the company will be stopping production for the Gypsy. <br /><br />The Gypsy which had become the nation's favourite right from its association with the Indian Army to its off-roading adventures, will not be accepting anymore fresh bookings. <br /><br />All throughout its journey in India, the second generation of the SUV was sold, whereas overseas the car had ramped up to head to the fourth generation. Internationally, the car was sold as ‘Suzuki Jimny’.<br /><br />The decision to discontinue the Gypsy came because Maruti would have had to bear a huge cost to ensure the car fits into the stricter safety and emission norms these days. <br /><br />In <a href="http://www.asianage.com/business/autos/050319/maruti-suzuki-pulls-the-plug-on-the-gypsy.html">2017</a>, the Indian Army too had announced its decision to say goodbye to the good ol’ Gypsy by switching to the Safari Storme.<br /><br />The Gypsy was Maruti Suzuki’s third car in the Indian market after Maruti 800 and Omni. <br /><br />India’s SUV space now has several brands including Mahindra TUV300, Mahindra Thar, Bolero among others vying for market share. The 7 cheap and trendy retailers you've never heard of that are blowing up online

<br /> <keyword id="6365618" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki-India">Maruti Suzuki India</keyword> (MSI), which is India’s largest car maker, ended the financial year on a good note by posting a 15.9% rise in total sales in March at 1,29,345 units as against 1,11,555 units in the same month last year.<br />

Domestically, the company's sales increased 14.6% during the month to 1,18,895 units as against 1,03,719 units this time last year.<br />
However, it was in the sale of mini segment cars, like Alto and WagonR, that the company’s growth was halted since the sales declined 8.7% to 36,678 units from 40,159 units in March 2015.<br />

Sales of the compact segment, including Swift, Estilo, Ritz, Dzire and Baleno, registered an increase of 20.9% to 46,786 units in March this year as compared to 38,710 units last year same month.<br />

The compact sedan Dzire Tour increased its sales by 21% during the month under review at 3,161 units as against 2,613 units in March 2015, while sales of mid-sized sedan Ciaz rose 28.9% to 5,480 units during the month. Sales of utility vehicles, including Gypsy, Grand Vitara, Ertiga, S-Cross and recently launched compact SUV Vitara Brezza surged over two-folds to 13,894 units in March this year from 6,218 units in the corresponding month last year.<br />

"The company ended 2015-16 with its highest ever sales of 14,29,248 units, a growth of 10.6 per cent. This comprises highest ever domestic sales of 13,05,351 units and 1,23,897 units of exports," MSI said.<br />

It added that the top four best-selling models in India were Alto, Dzire, Swift and WagonR, all of which are from Maruti Suzuki, for the fourth year in a row. <br />

Maruti's sales rose 16% in March, making it a good way to end FY 15-16

Every time I wear this unisex fragrance, someone tells me I smell good

<p>Have you ever wondered what happens to all of the elaborate Broadway costumes once a show is over? Some of them actually end up in Astoria, Queens where they are collected and rented out to other performances to give them a second life. We spoke with the director of the <a href="https://www.tdf.org/nyc/30/TDF-Costume-Collection-Overview">TDF Costume Collection</a>, Stephen Cabral, to find out how it all works and take a peek at some of their famous pieces. Following is a transcript of the video.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Broadway shows don't last forever. But some of the costumes used on stage can get a second act, thanks to a not-for-profit organization called the TDF Costume Collection.</p><p><strong>Cabral:</strong> We have a dress from Wicked, worn by Elphaba, as well as one of the "Mamma Mia!" jumpsuits.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> That's Stephen Cabral, the director of the collection, which is based in Astoria, Queens. TDF accepts donations from various theatrical performances at the end of their run and rents them back out to other performances for re-use.</p><p><strong>Cabral:</strong> We do approximately 1,000 productions a year, renting over 10,000 costumes, both here in New York City as well as nation-wide.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> They have over 80,000 items in their collection, including shoes, shirts, dresses, hats, gloves, and various other accessories.</p><p><strong> Cabral:</strong> A lot of times when a Broadway show will eventually close, the costumes are usually retained for the tour or backup. But every once in a while, a Broadway show will say, "Okay, we're done with these clothes; you can have them."</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> TDF started back in the early '70s, when the Metropolitan Opera moved to Lincoln Center and donated costumes from 22 shows. TDF has since expanded, offering all sorts of items donated from a variety of performances and individuals.</p><p><strong>Cabral:</strong> Recently, we received a rather large and very exciting donation. Hollywood, Broadway fashion designer, Bob Mackie.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Some notable pieces Mackie donated were a dress worn by Julia Louis Dreyfuss at the 1997 Emmy awards and an entire production of "The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public."</p><p><strong>Cabral:</strong> When the original production of "Rent" finally closed, after running for many, many years, we were very fortunate to receive all of the original costumes from the original off-Broadway production, before it moved to Broadway. We received many donations over the years from "Mamma Mia!" when "Mamma Mia!" was on Broadway. We have a dress worn by Jane Krakowski from a recent production of "She Loves Me," some costumes worn by Patti Lupone in the revival of "Gypsy."</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> While many of the items are iconic, you won't necessarily find something worn by big celebrities like Cher or Barbara Streisand.</p><p><strong>Cabral:</strong> Many celebrities actually wanna hold on to their costumes, either to potentially open a museum or more likely later on in life have some sort of celebrity auction.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Many amateur stage performances rent from TDF, but so do some TV shows and movies. Cabral: "Saturday Night Live," when they're filming, depending on their season and their needs, is in here sometimes every week.</p><p><strong> Narrator:</strong> TDF costumes can be seen in this skit with Betty White. "Now all we need is a dress and some proper shoes and a little womanly allure."</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> And this skit with Justin Timberlake as Mozart.</p><p><strong>Cabral:</strong> Both "Birdman" and "12 Years a Slave" featured costumes in the film that were rented here from the TDF Costume Collection. The only type of rental that we really don't do is Halloween Our costumes are really not Halloween-worthy. We also try to avoid doing rentals where there is any food or beverage involved.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Anyone can go in and explore the collection. But if you wanna try anything on, you have to fill out some paperwork first. They have mannequins you can use to check sizes and dressing rooms you can book in advance.</p><p>"Here I go!"</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Cost is based on a whole look, not per individual item.</p><p><strong>Cabral:</strong> The other part of our pricing exists with number of weeks of performances and how large your theater is.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> You also have to pay to have the costumes dry cleaned before returning them. Stephen says they have a green strategy in place to make sure all the items get as much use as possible. Once an item gets too ragged, it's moved to a special area, where these types of items are in demand.</p><p><strong>Cabral:</strong> We have a distressed section. So for productions like "Les Mis" or "Urinetown," these are costumes that need to not look so great.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> And two or three times a year, they open up the warehouse for a special bag sale.</p><p><strong>Cabral:</strong> You pay for that bag, you go in, and whatever you can shove into that bag and take out the door is yours.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> So no matter what condition a costume is in, there's always a chance at an encore performance.</p><p><strong>Cabral:</strong> We sometimes will put costumes on people and there's nothing. Nothing changes, they're just kind of like, "Eh." Then you put costumes on people and it brings out a whole other personality or two. And it's kind of fun.</p><p>"Lovely to meet you."</p>

What happens to old Broadway costumes

<p class="drop-cap">Julia Dovgal has always loved smelling good. As a child, she would douse herself in her mother's Chanel or Dior scents before going to school or meeting friends. For her birthday in 2017, she received her first "luxury" fragrance: Jo Malone's $165 bottle of Wood Sage and Sea Salt. The 29-year-old's collection has since grown to over 200 bottles.</p><p>At first, Dovgal was into <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-perfumes-scents-everyone-should-buy-former-ulta-fragrance-consultant">designer fragrances</a> like the ones her mother owned. "Then I discovered niche perfumery," she tells me. She's constantly on the hunt for perfumes with notes of vanilla and sandalwood. Dovgal says she spends about $600 a month on her collection, which she reviews on TikTok. "I want to have them all," she says.</p><p>Now a full-time content creator, Dovgal is far from the only young person driving a perfume renaissance. The market-research firm Circana says sales of luxury fragrance brands in the US grew by double digits in 2023. From 2021 to 2023, the size of the so-called prestige fragrance market increased by nearly $2 billion, to $8.3 billion, prompting a flood of new scents and brands.</p><p>Behind the booming appetite for new smells is Gen Z. The generation has graduated from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/victorias-secret-using-gen-z-nostalgia-to-become-relevant-2024-10">Victoria's Secret</a> body mists and is desperate for something fancier. Circana found in 2023 that 83% of Gen Zers said they used fragrance, compared with 79% of Gen Xers and 69% of boomers. It's not just the women either: A recent survey on consumer spending by the investment bank Piper Sandler found that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/status-symbols-for-men-list-examples-2024-7">fragrance spending among teen boys </a>had increased by 26% since the spring of 2023. Longtime favorites — Axe, Old Spice, and Bath &amp; Body Works — have been replaced by brands like Valentino and Jean Paul Gaultier. The boys' locker room today smells less like a boys' locker room and more like the sales floor of Saks.</p><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/perfume-buying-tips-mistakes-from-frequent-shopper-collector">Perfume</a> is no longer an afterthought sprayed on while running out the door; it's part of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-business-startups-entrepreneurship-digital-era-branding-social-media-2024-3">Gen Z's personal brand</a>. "Clean girls" might be wearing Maison Margiela's Replica Bubble Bath, a "quiet luxury" queen might give off the rich floral scent of Maison Francis Kurkdjian's Baccarat Rouge 540, while a "coastal grandmother" might douse herself in the woody notes of Byredo's Gypsy Water. Instead of picking one signature scent, young people are increasingly cycling through aesthetics. For Gen Z, it's all about the scent wardrobe.</p><p class="drop-cap">When e-commerce took off, the perfume industry smelled trouble. How are people supposed to know what scent they're buying if they can't spritz it through their screen? For a long time the industry tried to avoid online shopping, prioritizing classic scents and in-store sales. But when everything moved online during the pandemic in 2020, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.voguebusiness.com/beauty/fragrance-the-shift-to-digital">US fragrance sales dropped by 21%</a>. Marketers used increasingly complex descriptions and illustrations of scents, but it was still an uphill battle.</p><p>Around 2022, TikTok changed the game. Creators on #PerfumeTok touted their favorite scents, painting a picture for their followers of what they smelled like. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/glossier-you-perfume-viral-tiktok-genz-millennial-saved-brand-2024-6">Viral posts have caused fragrances to sell out</a>. Phlur said its Missing Person fragrance — the subject of TikTok videos with more than 50 million views — sold out within hours of its launch and amassed a 200,000-person waiting list. Curious about what it smells like? "You know when you're cuddling with someone that you really love, and you're, like, nuzzled up in their chest and you look up at them?" one creator said in a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@christina.calcote/video/7074014008629841198?lang=en">clip</a> that's been viewed 1.7 million times. "It smells like that."</p>          <p>Circana found that 45% of people who bought perfume in 2022 said that TikTok influenced them. Instead of buying a scent based on smell, young people have started making purchases based on <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/influencer-marketing-is-booming-as-brands-take-creators-more-seriously-2024-7">influencer recommendations</a>. "This is the type of fragrance for when you need to impress for a first date or a special-occasion event," Dovgal says in one of her most viewed TikToks. Under the handle @juliaperfumery, she shares perfume reviews for her primarily Gen Z audience against the backdrop of her New York City apartment's perfume closet. Each month she'll choose five or six fragrances to rotate through. "Perfume depends on the season and on the weather," she tells me. At the moment, her favorite brand is Juliette Has a Gun — she has almost all of the French label's fragrances.</p><p>To address the issue inherent in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-scents-fragrances-to-wear-in-fall-from-perfumers-2024-10">online perfume reviews</a> — people can't smell through the screen — PerfumeTok creators got creative. Their posts are often miniature personal essays designed to evoke emotions and memories.</p><p>"I have to communicate with your other senses to try and paint a picture of this fragrance for you," says Emelia O'Toole, who posts to her nearly 400,000 followers on TikTok under the handle @professorperfume. "We really lean into these dramatic, often long-winded descriptions of perfumes because it's what sets the scene. We have to put an image in your head instead of a smell." A viewer may not know what rose, lychee, and oud smell like, but they can imagine what an elegant woman in a long evening dress out on an evening in New York might, she says. "There's been a shift from classical perfume terminology to a more creative way of communicating with the senses," O'Toole adds.</p><p>Part of the shift is a growing interest in wearing scents that fit a specific aesthetic, mood, or brand. "If there's one thing Gen Z loves, it's a name for something," O'Toole says. Niche identities based on beauty fads have blossomed, especially on TikTok. If you're a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@marysherb/video/7266129751486598406?lang=en">tomato girl</a>, you probably have a bright rosy shade on your lips and cheeks to emulate a Mediterranean sunburn. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@itsitorri/video/7341746974216965419?lang=en&amp;q=vanilla%20girl&amp;t=1728926747169">Vanilla girls</a> have glowy skin and smell of expensive hand cream. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@isabellrrose/video/7325120662979300651?lang=en&amp;q=mob%20wife&amp;t=1728926764427">mob wife</a>, on the other hand, dons a fur coat while sporting dark eyeliner. "We've gone in a circle, from wanting to move away from labels to wanting to hyperspecifically label everything," O'Toole says.</p><p>This has encouraged what she calls a scent wardrobe. Years ago, someone's perfume collection may have included a day scent and a night scent, or perhaps a summer scent and winter scent. Now there's a scent for every occasion, mood, and scenario. There are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@thenoelthomas/video/7407554605111889195">back-to-school</a> scents, scents to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@dinasshops/video/7387888204533239073">win your ex back</a>, scents to smell like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@characterperfumes/video/7219699790706265370?lang=en">Vanessa Paradis in Paris in the '90s</a> — the list goes on. While not every Gen Zer can boast a collection of hundreds of perfumes, there is an evident appetite for more. Piper Sandler's survey found that fragrance spending among teens had grown by 25% since last year.</p><p>Cathrine Jansson-Boyd, a professor of consumer psychology at Anglia Ruskin University in the UK, connects the shift away from a signature scent with a weakening sense of identity. "The more time you spend online, the more you want to change how you represent yourself," she says. "You never really establish a proper sense of self."</p>          <p>She also pointed to mass-consumption culture — the increasing ease and convenience of buying an exponentially growing number of cheap products — as a contributing factor. The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/shein-temu-could-get-more-expensive-genz-customers-trade-wars-2024-10">fast-fashion retailer Shein</a>, whose clothing prices rarely top $50, is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.emarketer.com/content/shein-temu-win-over-gen-z-shoppers">incredibly popular with Gen Zers</a>, for instance. "With all these choices in terms of consumption, you don't get this full, internalized anchoring of who you are," Jansson-Boyd says. It's all about who Gen Z wants to be.</p><p>That could be why certain companies have taken off recently. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/renting-clothes-pros-cons-what-its-like-using-nuuly-2023-1">Nuuly, a clothing-rental subscription service</a> launched in 2019 by Urban Outfitters, allows young people to cycle through new clothes each month and try out different styles without too much of a commitment. Last year the brand reached profitability, and this year it said in the second quarter that its "average active subscribers" had grown by 50% year over year.</p><p>For O'Toole, experimenting with aesthetics is part of the fun. "I think that's one of the most beautiful parts about wearing a fragrance," she tells me. "You can say, 'Who do I feel like being today?' and just spray that on."</p><p class="drop-cap">For a long time, perfume was used <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quiet-status-symbols-popular-this-year-2024-1">to communicate status and wealth</a>. For many, it was a form of affordable affluence — a way to secure their status even when the economy was bad. You may not be spritzing it from your château in the Riviera, but with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/met-gala-nicole-kidman-chanel-commercial-dress-karl-lagerfeld-2023-5">Chanel No. 5</a> you could at least smell like Marilyn Monroe, Catherine Deneuve, or Nicole Kidman. For Gen Z, however, the most coveted scent isn't always the most expensive one.</p><p>With the emergence of niche independent perfumers and the increasing availability of affordable fragrances, signaling status is not just about having the money to splurge on designer fragrances — it's about being in the know. While most will recognize Chanel No. 5 on the street, only a few can put their finger on the notes of cardamom, fig, and black tea of BDK's Gris Charnel. A niche scent affords wearers an opportunity to stand out from the crowd while signaling that they have good taste — an inescapable paradox that Jansson-Boyd describes as part of being human. Who exactly you choose to signal to depends on your priorities: Out at a bar, you might sniff out <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@scoutdixonwest/video/7290642013110947118?lang=en">a fellow horse girl</a> or someone with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@hllywoodforever/video/7403371630489062698">rockstar-girlfriend energy</a> and experience a fleeting moment of connection.</p><p>For Gen Z, it's not enough for a fragrance to smell good — it has to make them feel something. By its very nature, perfume taps into this idea. The power of scent on our emotions can be traced back to ancient times; <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3794443/">research suggests</a> smells evoke emotions that can help <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5198031/">reduce stress and depression</a>. Amid a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rich-people-obsessed-longevity-luxury-hotels-iv-drips-mri-scans-2024-10">booming wellness industrial complex</a>, fragrances are increasingly being marketed as self-care tools. Take Bella Hadid's Orebella fragrances, which incorporate "aura enhancing" essential oils, for instance. Or Gabar, the London-based brand that says its mission is "to encourage ideas of self-expansion and self-awareness through scent and everyday rituals."</p><p>"Nowadays people are looking beyond wholly utilitarian concepts and are looking to their beauty products and rituals to cultivate a sense of intentionality in their lives," says Susan Wai Hnin, Gabar's chief operating officer and global director. "This convergence of the worlds of beauty and wellness have resulted in the rise in popularity of mood-boosting products — people are looking to feel something when they use their products."</p><p>The wellness angle — as opposed to the old-school sex-appeal marketing, which has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-08-03/young-adults-less-sex-gen-z-millennials-generations-parents-grandparents">fallen out of favor</a> with the "puriteen" generation — is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/consumer-packaged-goods/our-insights/the-trends-defining-the-1-point-8-trillion-dollar-global-wellness-market-in-2024?cid=other-eml-mtg-mip-mck&amp;hlkid=54f51c678f164e64b81b88f2b4f5146a&amp;hctky=1926&amp;hdpid=a91cc4a1-cb5d-48e8-9020-050490cd48c6">especially appealing to younger consumers</a>. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>Boxing fans are being robbed of a golden era in the heavyweight division.</li><li>Three elite heavyweights are at the top of their game as Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder, and Tyson Fury have emerged as stars who can generate mass interest in a post-Floyd Mayweather era.</li><li>The only problem is that high profile bouts between them are proving a challenge to organise.</li><li>The longer life goes on without a fight involving two of them, the likelier it is to be an underwhelming bout like that between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao in 2015 - a clash that could have been a classic if it had happened six years earlier.</li><li>Joshua, Wilder, and Fury have a chance to add their stories to a heavyweight narrative that goes back more than a century.</li><li>But should they fail to fight one another in their primes, the only thing that will be history is their legacies.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>Boxing is a sport defined by its rivalries, its trilogies, and its eras.</p><p>Jack Johnson shook up the fight game at the start of the 20th century when, as boxing's long-reigning "Colored Champion," he became the first black man to cross over and win the heavyweight title - a belt that had previously been contested by white fighters only.</p><p>His wildly anticipated 1908 bout against Tommy Burns in Australia was eventually stopped by the police over fears the humiliating beating would incite a white riot at ringside.</p><p>With Johnson as champion, the media started looking for a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/04/sports/othersports/04boxing.html?mtrref=www.google.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"great white hope"</a> to succeed him. The novelist Jack London even led a campaign to get the former champion James Jeffries out of retirement and into the ring, so that he could <a href="https://timeline.com/when-a-black-fighter-won-the-fight-of-the-century-race-riots-erupted-across-america-3730b8bf9c98?gi=5098166c8bc4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"</a><a href="https://timeline.com/when-a-black-fighter-won-the-fight-of-the-century-race-riots-erupted-across-america-3730b8bf9c98?gi=5098166c8bc4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wipe that smile from Johnson's face."</a></p><p>It didn't work. Johnson knocked Jeffries out in 1910 in a bout dubbed "The Fight of the Century."</p><p>Johnson, a true fighting man, defined his era. He was the Muhammad Ali of his day, and arguably the sport's first superstar.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Since Johnson, many chapters have been added to boxing's biggest nights.</p><p>From the <a href="http://www.boxingnewsonline.net/on-this-day-jack-dempsey-headlined-boxings-first-million-dollar-gate/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"First Million Dollar Gate,"</a> which saw Jack Dempsey violently finish Georges Carpentier in the fourth round of a 1921 brawl, which generated more than $1.7 million in ticket sales, to the 1938 <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/05/sports/max-schmeling-heavyweight-champion-caught-in-the-middle-of-nazi.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Undercard of World War II"</a> where the American Joe Louis blitzed Nazi pawn Max Schmeling in a single round, boxing was steeped in history before it ever got to the "Thrilla in Manila," when Muhammad Ali concluded his three-fight rivalry with Joe Frazier in 1975.</p><p>Ali fought in a golden era of heavyweight boxing as many giants of the sport all competed at the same time. They fought brutal fights, exchanged stunning wins and shocking losses, and when it was time for its elite combatants - Ali, Frazier, Ken Norton, and George Foreman - to hang up their gloves, they had inspired enough headlines to maintain interest for generations to come.</p><p>It was not until Mike Tyson fought his way to the top many years later that the media spotlight returned to boxing's glamor division.</p><p>And this helped usher in a new golden era through the 1990s and beyond, because of Evander Holyfield and Riddick Bowe's trilogy, Tyson and Holyfield's "Bite Fight" rivalry, and Lennox Lewis' mastery of them all.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>But in the last 20 years, interest in the heavyweight division waned as Wladimir Klitschko's supreme reign failed to capture the imagination of the American market. Instead, fighters like multi-weight champion Manny Pacquiao and the undefeated Floyd Mayweather rose to the fore.</p><p>And in the post-Mayweather era, boxing has been desperate for a new rivalry that will stand the test of time - and there is one in the making as a new golden era of heavyweight boxing is upon us.</p><p>The only problem is that the very best in the division - the unified champion Anthony Joshua and the concussive punching Deontay Wilder - are unable, or simply unwilling, to actually fight each other.</p><h2>Boxing is beautiful and admirable, but also ugly and annoying</h2><p>The welterweight boxing champion Keith Thurman recently told Business Insider that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/keith-thurman-boxing-not-about-killing-people-2019-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the sport is "beautiful" and "admirable"</a> because it gets athletes of varying sizes, gender, and ability to test themselves against one another, unarmed, in a 20-foot ring, using nothing but their speed, power, defensive capabilities, cunning, and will.</p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong>: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/keith-thurman-boxing-not-about-killing-people-2019-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Manny Pacquiao's next opponent Keith Thurman has pushed back against Deontay Wilder's controversial comments, saying boxing is 'not about killing people'</a></em></p><p>But there is an ugliness to boxing as there are mechanisms in place that allow elite fighters to just avoid each other without any real push back. It is happening right before our eyes, today, and it is robbing fight fans of what could be an immortal rivalry.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Anthony Joshua defends his heavyweight world boxing titles against Andy Ruiz Jr. at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Saturday.</p><p>Ruiz Jr., a reasonable but dull contender, wasn't even a first choice opponent. He was a late replacement after Jarrell Miller was forced to withdraw from the June 1 showdown because of a series of failed drug tests.</p><p>But even Miller, who <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-jerrell-miller-pushed-anthony-joshua-2019-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shoved Joshua so hard he almost fell over</a> at a pre-event press conference, wasn't Joshua's first choice. He was fourth, at best, after failed attempts at coaxing Wilder or the "Gypsy King" Tyson Fury into a fight in America, or fellow Londoner Dillian Whyte into a rematch at Wembley Stadium.</p><h2>Why fighters don't fight</h2><p>Boxing is not a league. And rarely is it a tournament. It is its own entity that operates strangely under the banners of rival organizations like the World Boxing Association (WBA), the World Boxing Council (WBC), the World Boxing Organization (WBO), and the International Boxing Federation (IBF).</p><p>There is nothing to force the heavyweight champion of the WBC, Wilder, to fight the champion of the other organizations, which is Joshua. There is no boxing president, like UFC boss Dana White, to point at one athlete and say, "You, go fight him for this paycheck on this date. Sign here."</p><p>Rival promoters and broadcasters can complicate the boxing landscape further. Wilder is promoted by Shelly Finkel and fights on Showtime. Joshua is promoted by Eddie Hearn and fights on DAZN. So far, discussions between them have flopped, and Hearn apparently infuriated Finkel when he started trolling him on YouTube by calling him nicknames like <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nn3xYfLnSjk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Shirley Winkel."</a></p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong>: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/anthony-joshua-plans-to-be-bigger-than-floyd-mayweather-2019-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Anthony Joshua's team told us how they're planning to make him even bigger than Floyd Mayweather in the U.S.</a></em></p><p>Joshua wanted to attempt to negotiate the fight himself, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3tleT61uoc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">appearing on ESPN this week</a> to challenge Wilder to meet him man-to-man and discuss the fight, and a deal, themselves, away from promoters. Within a day, Wilder tweeted that he had another fight lined up against Luis Ortiz, a guy he has already resoundingly beaten.</p><p>Wilder and Joshua, fighters who have seemingly been on a collision course for years now, are not the only top tier heavyweights to avoid each other.</p><p>Wilder and Fury were supposed to contest an immediate rematch following their disputed draw at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, last year.</p><p>Fury boxed masterfully through long periods in the fight but got dropped by Wilder's thunderous power in the ninth round, then again in the 12th when it appeared Fury was out for the count. Fury woke, miraculously got to his feet, and survived until the final bell.</p><p>The clash of styles - Fury's awkward boxing and moving, and Wilder's one-punch power - combined with the unsatisfying result made fans clamor for another fight, one that could break December's deadlock.</p><p>But <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/boxing/47280228" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fury signed a $100 million broadcast deal with ESPN</a>, is now copromoted by veteran dealmaker Bob Arum, and has moved from the Wilder high to the comparative low of Tom Schwarz, a low-level opponent he will be expected to handily defeat in Las Vegas on June 15.</p><p>Whether Arum and ESPN thrust Fury back into a big fight later in the year that will challenge him, or build his name on the network by matchmaking him against relative pushovers remains to be seen.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Wilder, Joshua, and Fury all talk a good fight, but seem all too happy to take on lesser challenges, pushing high profile ones further and further into the future.</p><p>But time is of the essence.</p><p>After he dethroned Klitschko in a 2015 upset in Germany, Fury said he drank 18 pints of beer a night, abused cocaine, and drove a Ferrari at 190 mph because he wanted to crush it "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tyson-fury-drove-a-ferrari-at-190mph-because-he-wanted-to-crush-it-like-a-coke-can-2018-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">like a Coke can"</a> while he was inside. At one point, he weighed around 400 pounds. And so when he wanted to return to prizefighting three years later, he had to lose 150 pounds - more than a third of his weight - just to get fighting fit.</p><p>Fury did remarkably well to return from the depths of his depression, easily beating Sefer Seferi and Francesco Planeta, before taking on Wilder. It is to his credit that he is competing once again, considering where he has come from.</p><p>But boxers who enjoy career longevity tend to be athletes who stay in shape, maintaining a weight around the division they compete in, throughout their entire stint in the sport. Mayweather is a famous example. Athletes who blow up in weight and return to training camps out of shape, tend to retire early - like the former two-weight world champion Ricky Hatton.</p><p>It is therefore unclear how long Fury, already 30, will stay in his prime for.</p><p>Wilder, meanwhile, turns 35 next winter, and as an ageing fighter, he may have to adapt his fighting style or risk suffering marginal losses to fundamental skills. <a href="http://www.boxingnewsonline.net/the-science-behind-the-aging-boxer/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Boxing News reports</a> that speed, for one, slows as fighters age through their 30s, but the way to combat this is to throw fewer, but more accurate, punches.</p><p>It is unclear if Wilder can do this or for how long he can retain his bludgeoning power before it ebbs away into the ether.</p><p>The longer Joshua waits on tackling Wilder and Fury, the likelier it is that the quality of an eventual fight will suffer.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>We only need to look at the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight in 2015 as an example of a high profile fight gone wrong.</p><p>The two welterweights had been linked with one another for seven years, and a fight ideally would have been made after Pacquiao battered, bruised, and beat Miguel Cotto by stoppage in 2009. This was when Pacquiao was at the peak of his powers, and when Mayweather himself had just returned to the sport after retiring for the first time, beating Juan Manuel Marquez with ease just two months before Pacquiao wilted Cotto.</p><p>But the bout couldn't be agreed for another six years, long after Pacquiao had been savagely knocked out by Marquez. When they were finally in the ring together, Mayweather cruised to an easy win over an opponent who was a fading force in the game.</p><p>Joshua vs. Wilder or Fury could go the way of Mayweather vs. Pacquiao or, even worse, the way of Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Yuriorkis Gamboa, a mooted matchup between two technically exquisite featherweights around 10 years ago.
