Welcome to another action-crime thriller with big dollops of <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> masala that has earned a decent response at the <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword>. But if you are expecting a movie featuring <keyword id="6354925" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kolkata">Kolkata</keyword> in the troubled 70s or a big-time gangster flick that reveals a human core, it will be better to skip <keyword id="6427325" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gunday">Gunday</keyword>. Directed by <keyword id="6368814" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ali-Abbas-Zafar">Ali Abbas Zafar</keyword>, this gun-goon-and-gal flick has loads of twists and turns, follows a long-winded <keyword id="1097560" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="storyline">storyline</keyword> and stars big names including <keyword id="106133" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ranveer-Singh">Ranveer Singh</keyword>, <keyword id="114453" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arjun-Kapoor">Arjun Kapoor</keyword>, <keyword id="1655" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Priyanka-Chopra">Priyanka Chopra</keyword> and <keyword id="16207" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Irrfan-Khan">Irrfan Khan</keyword>. But that’s where its claim to fame should end unless you are ready to ogle some brawn and oomph, a pseudo-historical account of the times and a glimpse of the City of Joy as the background. 
 
Gunday was released on the Valentine’s Day (February 14) and tries hard to explore the <keyword id="1541122" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="bromance">bromance</keyword> between the male leads – the <keyword id="1739443" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="outlaw">outlaw</keyword> duo of <keyword id="19013" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="bikram">Bikram</keyword> (Ranveer) and <keyword id="17684" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bala">Bala</keyword> (Arjun). While that is commendable to some extent, the contrived love triangle involving Priyanka (<keyword id="70837" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nandita">Nandita</keyword>) looks scarcely convincing and her main utility seems to be getting the eyeballs. 
 
Yet, the movie has done fairly well at the box office, netting around Rs 43.93 crore at home after the first weekend. Gunday has, however, failed to race past another action thriller, Salman-starrer <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Jai-Ho-Salman-FightsThrough-Clichs-Fails-To-Create-A-Dhoom/articleshow/29505187.cms">Jai Ho</a>, which earned around Rs 60 crore in the debut weekend. Overseas collections of Gunday stood at $2.16 million gross. But there was a drop in collection on the crucial Day 4 (February 17) and the movie netted around Rs 6.5 crore as per industry estimates. Still, we are seeing some steady traction and Gunday may soon enter the coveted Rs <keyword id="6567206" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="100-crore-club">100 crore club</keyword>. The flick, made on an approximate budget of Rs 50 crore including promotions, has reportedly hit over 2,000 screens across India. 
 
Coming back to the story, let’s have a close look at what makes Gunday kind of unpalatable. Interestingly, <keyword id="2217" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Big-B">Big B</keyword>, who had watched the film at its Mumbai premiere, told the media that it’s “an adrenaline-packed movie.” That’s true and Gunday tries to capture the saga of angry young men who get on the wrong side of the law on their way to a glamorised life of crime. Does it remind you of Deewaar? The broad <keyword id="50138" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Theme">theme</keyword> of Gunday is not unlike that old classic but then, everything else has gone awry – be it storyline, acting, periodicity or dialogues. 
 For one, the entire journey of Bikram and Bala looks patchy. The movie fails to give us a realistic version of the metamorphosis they have undergone – from orphan kids (migrants from <keyword id="6354759" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bangladesh">Bangladesh</keyword>) to big-time coal mafias who are always on the run from the law. But in doing so, Ranveer-Arjun display loads of bromance; get involved in <keyword id="2065117" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shirtless-fights">shirtless fights</keyword> à la <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword>, and show off their biceps &amp; waxed 6-packs (imagine that in the 70s) quite unabashed. Are they the new <keyword id="2065120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Male-eye-candy">male eye candy</keyword>, we wonder? But more than that, they are the brainless brawn type who can be easily trapped by the cops. 
 The duo duly falls in love with the <keyword id="2065114" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="gorgeous-cabaret-dancer">gorgeous cabaret dancer</keyword> Nandita (Priyanka Chopra) who obviously can’t be what she seems. So she turns out to be an <keyword id="2065123" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Undercover-police">undercover police</keyword> officer, in league with <keyword id="2065121" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="ACP-Satyajeet-Sarkar">ACP Satyajeet Sarkar</keyword> (Irrfan Khan). A look at Nandita’s get-up makes us wonder whether Kolkata had ever seen such flamboyant fashion trends during that period. Still, Priyanka is playing the role of a seductress and <keyword id="77110" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Undercover-agent">undercover agent</keyword>. So she must look lethal, even when she is clad in the traditional saree. In contrast, Irrfan does a commendable job and does the voiceover, too. 
 What you may love about this movie is the easy-flowing chemistry between Ranveer and Arjun, some good punch lines and Irrfan’s great acting. But the flick falls flat by the end as clichés abound and not even the suspense ending can save it. Protagonists/anti-heroes of this sort can attain a different height if the storyline and the characters are handled with subtlety and sensitiveness. But <keyword id="303" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Director">director</keyword> Ali Abbas Zafar gives as something as crass and over-the-top as his earlier movie, <keyword id="440305" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mere-brother-ki-Dulhan">Mere Brother Ki Dulhan</keyword>. And the outcome? As Mohar Basu of Koimoi says, it’s a “sexy show gone dull.” All because talented actors are made to struggle to find their rhythm in a cliché-laden <keyword id="6371619" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="plot">plot</keyword>.

You Clueless But Cash Register is Ringing

After some great business for a couple of weeks, <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> is back to the ‘slump’ mode even as <keyword id="2409418" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vidya-Balan-Ali-Fazal-starrer">Vidya Balan-Ali Fazal-starrer</keyword> <keyword id="1876316" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bobby-Jasoos">Bobby Jasoos</keyword> hit the screen on July 4. The other release of the week was <keyword id="2409416" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arif-Ali-directed">Arif Ali-directed</keyword> <keyword id="2409419" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Romantic-drama">romantic drama</keyword> <keyword id="2232911" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lekar-Hum-Deewana-Dil">Lekar Hum Deewana Dil</keyword>, which could have gone deep into millennial psyche and become a successful coming-of-age movie with a strong romantic undertone. Instead, it turned out to be a not-so-original concoction of previous hits like <keyword id="14521" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jab-We-Met">Jab We Met</keyword> and <keyword id="6354768" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Highway">Highway</keyword> (both directed by Arif’s brother <keyword id="14373" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Imtiaz">Imtiaz</keyword>) or the age-old youth-centric flicks of Bollywood. The outcome is quite predictable – a complete washout at the <keyword id="827271" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Box-Office">domestic box office</keyword>. 
 But first things first – let us come back to <keyword id="1997475" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Samar-Shaikh">Samar Shaikh</keyword>’s <keyword id="41623" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Directorial-debut">directorial debut</keyword> Bobby Jasoos, which was produced by <keyword id="981" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dia-Mirza">Dia Mirza</keyword> and <keyword id="440307" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sahil-Sangha">Sahil Sangha</keyword>. <keyword id="3844" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vidya-Balan">Vidya Balan</keyword> in a key role (remember <keyword id="6405846" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Dirty-Picture">Dirty Picture</keyword> or <keyword id="6358300" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Kahaani">Kahaani</keyword>?) has always been a treat to watch but this time, the clumsy sleuth <keyword id="2409413" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bilkis-Ahmed">Bilkis Ahmed</keyword> aka Bobby didn’t get the cash register ringing. Even after the resounding success of the <keyword id="1250908" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="romantic-thriller">romantic thriller</keyword> <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/BoxOffice-Ek-Villain-A-Runaway-Success-May-Soon-Enter-Rs-100-Crore-Club/articleshow/37631847.cms">Ek Villain</a>, Vidya’s kind of seriocomic suspense went largely unappreciated. Although the movie hit nearly 1,350 screens across 39 countries including India and enjoyed considerable hype, occupancy was dismal on the debut day itself – just around 30%. The movie netted around Rs 7.5 crore at the domestic <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword> in the first three days and business slumped further on the crucial first Monday as the flick netted around Rs 1.25 crore, according to industry estimates. Keeping in mind its whopping budget of Rs 28 crore (cost and P&amp;A), Bobby Jasoos could be in the red if business does not pick up quickly during the first week. 
 
Interestingly, Mohit Suri-directed <keyword id="2177024" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ek-Villain">Ek Villain</keyword> is going great guns in spite of two new releases and already amassed Rs 92.90 crore at the domestic box office after the second Sunday. Thanks to 1,700 screens and 5,400 shows per day, the flick may enter the <keyword id="925977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rs-100-crore-club">Rs 100 crore club</keyword> within the second week. 
 
 
 
 
Lekar Hum Deewana Dil had a <keyword id="2277648" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="disastrous-start">disastrous start</keyword> at the domestic box office, collecting a little over Rs 40 lakh on the opening day and just about Rs 1.41 crore after the first three days. The Monday earnings are not confirmed yet, but are estimated to be Rs 50 lakh, according to industry insiders. Starring newcomers <keyword id="433654" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Armaan-Jain">Armaan Jain</keyword> (well, he is <keyword id="2409428" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Raj-Kapoors-grandson">Raj Kapoor’s grandson</keyword>) and <keyword id="97760" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Deeksha-Seth">Deeksha Seth</keyword>, Lekar Hum has turned out to be one of the lowest grossers with a fresh cast. The movie’s budget was Rs 16 crore (cost and P&amp;A) – a clear indication that it will have to struggle hard to break even. 
 
Critically speaking, Bobby Jasoos showcases quite a few novel features. Vidya in her multiple disguises is fun to watch; the cases she solves are from everyday life and hardly require Sherlock-like qualities, and throughout the story, we get to see a vulnerable middle-class girl from an <keyword id="122267" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="orthodox">orthodox</keyword> society and an old city, trying to establish a brand new identity. The theme is a laudable one and Vidya carries it out with great vigour, breathing life into this spicy mix of fun and mystery. But the plot tumbles towards the melodramatic all too soon, making things painfully predictable in spite of the great chemistry between Vidya and <keyword id="486750" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ali-Fazal">Ali Fazal</keyword> (<keyword id="2409430" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tassavur">Tassavur</keyword>). 
 
Armaan-Deeksha-starrer Lekar Hum Deewana Dil also had the potential to be different, but the <keyword id="1636016" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="rom-com">rom-com</keyword> fails to lift interpersonal relationship to a different level of conflict, confrontation and comprehension. So you get another mundane love story at the end. Maybe <keyword id="303" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Director">director</keyword> <keyword id="314242" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arif-Ali">Arif Ali</keyword> was trying to churn out a perfect Bollywood hit (no wonder there was a great combo of all the great rom-coms we can possibly remember). But the next time he does it, he must remember that famous quote by Anna Quindlen – The thing that is really hard, and really amazing, is... beginning the work of becoming yourself.

Bobby Jasoos No Match For Ek Villain, Lekar Hum Deewana Dil A Total Disaster

<ul class="summary-list"><li>After I met Anwar at a cigar lounge and went on a date with him, we went to his friend's party.</li><li>At one point, his friend pulled me into the bathroom and told me Anwar was married with children.</li></ul>Anwar picked me up in a pristine, old-school Mercedes-Benz with blacked-out windows. He was wearing a black leather jacket and boots with aviators. I laughed when I saw him and wondered whether he had just watched "Top Gun."We had met a few months earlier at a cigar lounge and went out once a couple of weeks later. He was funny, intelligent, and incredibly confident but a little too smooth and a little too cool. <a href="https://www.insider.com/behavior-scientist-shares-8-questions-to-ask-after-a-date-2022-12">I could tell he was an experienced dater</a>.We grabbed a quick dinner and headed to his friend's house, where a group was gathered to watch a big UFC fight. Anwar opened the bottle of wine he brought for me. I hit it off with a pretty, blond woman named Tatiana. I could feel Anwar's eyes on us as we chatted, and I knew instinctively that he did not like that I was talking to her. She made a couple of jabs at him but laughed and said they were all friends. <h2>When I connected with his friend, Anwar started to act strangely</h2>At the party, Anwar <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/first-date-red-flags-2018-5#7-theyre-aggressively-romantic-7">was handsy and needy</a>, which annoyed me. He'd been a bit grabby on our first date, but this was ridiculous. I felt like he was putting on a show, but I liked the girls at the party so much that I told myself to avoid his advances and enjoy the evening. I had just met everyone, but they were all treating me like we'd known each other for years. I felt like a part of the group, and it was nice.Tatiana and I continued to chat while Anwar worked the room and shook hands like an overly eager politician. While filling tiny solo cups with whiskey, she told me about her pending divorce, and I sipped. She said her ex dealt with addiction and that she should have left him a long time ago. She was 30; I told her I also divorced at 30. We bonded over our shared experiences. I noticed Anwar was still watching us talk from across the room.Tatiana left to grab a bottle of wine from her car. Immediately, Anwar was back at my side and in my ear, telling me to watch out for her. "Watch out for what?" I asked, laughing. "Just be careful with her," he said. I wondered what he meant.More people joined the gathering as the main UFC event began. All the women were friendly, but I noticed the men just looked at me, keeping their distance. I didn't know what to make of it.<h2>I was cornered in the bathroom and learned the truth</h2>When Anwar headed outside to smoke, Tatiana grabbed my hand and pulled me into a bathroom with her. She closed the door and blurted out, "<a href="https://www.insider.com/husband-supported-open-relationship-with-girlfriend-lgbtq-2023-5">You know he's married with kids</a>, right?""No!" I replied, because I didn't. However, I believed her — I had no reason not to. Everyone at the house seemed to be friends with Anwar. I asked her whether everyone at the party knew, and she said yes. I felt humiliated. There was a knock at the door, and Tatiana opened it slowly. She pulled in a guy named Lev, whom I had briefly met earlier in the evening. He looked at her expectantly, like he knew what she would say."I told her," she said. He shook his head and replied: "We're not supposed to talk to Anwar's girls." It became clear this had happened before."I am not Anwar's girl," I protested. Lev turned to me and said, "He treats you good, right?"I looked at him incredulously and said, "He's freaking married."Tatiana said, "Us girls have to stick together."Lev gave her a look, like, "Here we go."No one seemed to notice or care when Lev, Tatiana, and I all left the bathroom together, except Anwar, who looked panicked. He immediately escorted me onto the back patio. "I don't trust some of the people here," he said as he aggressively sucked at his cigarette.I looked at him and decided at that moment to feign ignorance. "Really, why?" I asked."I just don't," he said, flicking ash. He looked down at his feet, then my face, and then his feet again, and I knew he was terrified that I had found him out.<h2>I wanted to beat Anwar at his own game</h2>I decided to teach Anwar a lesson. If he could pretend to be single, I could pretend to like him. I wanted to give him a taste of his own medicine and see how he liked it."I'm having a great time," I said, smiling. But Anwar continued to fidget, flicked his cigarette, and looked searchingly into my eyes. I looked at him blankly and asked with mock concern, "Do you want to leave?""I don't know," he said. Again, I reassured him that I was enjoying myself.For the rest of the night, Anwar hardly left my side. He was practically guarding me from Tatiana, who smiled at me widely from across the room. I found the whole thing hilarious, especially when I thought about <a href="https://www.insider.com/love-bombing-or-anxiety-2023-5">texts he'd sent me</a> over the past few weeks saying he'd love to get married one day and have a family — the audacity of this guy. I decided to take it one step further, just for fun."We should take a trip," I said, leaning into Anwar and touching his thigh. He lit up like a Christmas tree."Really? Yes, anywhere you want to go. Just tell me when, and I'll make all the arrangements," he said, grabbing my hands. I noticed a few guys watching Anwar. We walked over to talk to them, and one asked me, "He's a romantic guy, isn't he?" I put a hand on Anwar's chest and said, "Oh, yes."The party started winding down. Anwar grabbed my hand, then told me we were going out for a nightcap. I laughed and reached for my phone to call an Uber."I've seen you take at least seven shots. I'm not letting you drive me anywhere," I told him. Anwar looked at me in disbelief. One of the sober wives of the men at the party offered to take me home, and I accepted her offer to avoid waiting for an Uber while Anwar continued pressuring me to leave with him.<h2>He reached from 3 numbers, which I blocked</h2>Anwar started blowing up my phone while I was in the woman's car. She said, "You know, don't you." I laughed and said yes. She asked me how I knew, but there was no way I was going to rat out my girl Tatiana, so I just told her I figured it out. When I got home, I spent an hour <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/how-to-block-a-number">blocking Anwar from not one, not two, but three different numbers</a> he tried to contact me from. He kept asking me via text and voicemail what was wrong, why I wouldn't answer his calls or texts, and, finally, why I kept blocking him. I didn't respond to any of his messages, but I have to admit, I was curious if he knew I had found him out.<h2>That night taught me to trust my instincts</h2>Months later, at the same cigar lounge where I met Anwar, I ran into some of the guys I met that evening. I was sitting at the bar with an old-fashioned when they invited me to join them at a nearby table. I was still feeling curious, so I did. They tried to cover for Anwar by telling me he's a great guy. They made it sound like he and his wife had some kind of arrangement, but I reminded them I had no such arrangement, nor was I aware that he was married with children. They shook their heads as though I was blowing things out of proportion, and I wondered how often they ran interference for him like this.Later that evening, I got a WhatsApp message asking, "Why did you block me everywhere and stop talking to me?" I blocked that number as well. Is it possible that he really didn't know I knew, or did he just want me to confirm it because he enjoyed drama? I still haven't figured it out.Ultimately, the whole situation is an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-tell-the-difference-between-intuition-and-over-thinking-2018-2">excellent reminder to trust your instincts</a>. I knew from the moment I met Anwar that he had a player energy about him, yet I went out with him. I'm learning to trust my initial feelings about the people I go out with, and so far, I've been able to avoid married men — at least, to my knowledge.

In "Carol," a new movie directed by Todd Haynes, age makes all the difference, but there's a gender twist.The story takes place in New York around 1950, when same-sex relationships started out as furtive glances and carefully phrased questions. Therese, played by Rooney Mara in a performance that won her the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival this year, is a twentysomething woman being courted for marriage by her boyfriend. Carol, played by Cate Blanchett in a performance that should've shared the Cannes award, has a daughter and is in the middle of a divorce. She's 16 years older than Therese, in the movie and in real life (Blanchett is 46 and Mara is 30).Because this is the middle of the 20th century, everyone's still in the closet. Haynes never makes it clear whether Carol and Therese are bisexual or lesbian. He considers it beside the point: It is a romance between two women. When Therese becomes the subject of Carol's advances, she doesn't know what to do. She has not read Out magazine, she has not seen <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blue-is-the-warmest-color-trailer-2013-9">"Blue Is the Warmest Color,"</a> and she doesn't have any gay friends to talk to. Carol, on the other hand, is experienced.And so what follows is a story in which Carol brings Therese "of age," so to speak, guiding her through new experiences, changing her perception of the world. Carol takes Therese on a road trip. They leave New York and have the vague plan of heading to Chicago, but their trip almost seems aimless. At the same time, it's like Carol has done this before. When Carol and Therese finally have sex, it's filmed in tasteful close-ups and doesn't run for a second too long. By contrast, Abdellatif Kechiche, in 2013's "Blue Is the Warmest Color," filmed those scenes immoderately. In "Carol," every touch tells you about Carol and Therese's tenderness, about how they behave. "Blue" told you that, and then wouldn't shut up.Carol is not just the older, experienced person in the relationship teaching the younger person how it's done - she is the older, more experienced person teaching someone with no frame of reference, and teaching her to understand everything without shame. And she has no idea what she's doing.If the legendary French director Jean-Luc Godard <a href="http://m.imdb.com/name/nm0000419/quotes" target="_blank">said</a>, "All you need to make a movie is a girl and a gun," "Carol" provides two girls and a gun. On the road trip, Carol discovers that a private investigator has followed her and Therese. We should have seen it coming, given that the movie is based on a novel (<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Price-Salt-Carol-Patricia-Highsmith/dp/0393325997" target="_blank">"The Price of Salt"</a>) by noir writer Patricia Highsmith, but Haynes' gorgeous photography makes you forget. The detective is working for Carol's husband, who threatens to use the evidence of her homosexuality to invoke a "morality clause" that would give him sole custody of their child. In 1950, homosexuality was considered a mental illness, and Carol sees a psychotherapist to ensure the court doesn't take her daughter away from her. She stays away from Therese to try to prove her straightness.In all this, Therese is left adrift. Because she has no one else to talk to about her newfound sexuality, she is dependent on Carol. Carol isn't just her guide through a new world, she is the only person in that world. When Carol leaves, she is all alone. After two women hide away from the world, a man suddenly arrives, wielding power over both of them. Carol is at his mercy, and she can do nothing for Therese anymore.When Carol first met Therese, she thought she had her own destiny - and Therese's - under her own control. By the end, she's watching powerlessly. In their first shared scene, Carol purchases a train set from Therese as a Christmas gift for her daughter. When it arrives at her home, she assembles it, lights a cigarette, flicks a few switches, and the train runs. She was fined $10,500 for "unsportsmanlike behavour" when she verbally attacked a lineswoman who called a foot fault during her 2009 US Open semi-final against Kim Clijsters. "I swear to God I'll f------ take the ball and shove it down your f------ throat," <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2009/sep/13/serena-williams-tirade-us-open" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Guardian quotes her to have said at the time</a>.But that was nine years ago. And an athlete, high on adrenaline, in the middle of a high-stakes and high-pressure competition can act in ways they otherwise would not. If it happens irregularly, it does not detract from what that person does off the court or the field. If that were the case, then Federer, also a racket smasher, would not be thought of so highly for his philanthropy - helping raise <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/kurtbadenhausen/2018/08/27/highest-paid-tennis-players-2018-roger-federer-aces-competition-with-77-million/#37bf40601fb3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$40 million to educate approximately one million children in Africa</a>.Likewise, regardless of sporadic "unsportsmanlike behaviour," Williams remains a feminist hero - and I'll tell you why.<h2>Williams is a tutu-wearing badass</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>A 23-time Grand Slam champion, Williams won her first major aged 17 in 1999. Daniel BrownChicago police guard a homicide scene.In 2016, Chicago experienced <a href="http://homicides.suntimes.com/2017/01/05/week-in-review-killed-in-chicago-violence-35/">780 murders</a>, making it the deadliest year in the city in nearly two decades. The first homicide of the year came at 2:20 a.m. on New Year's Day in the South Side Grand Boulevard neighborhood. 24-year-old DeAndre Holiday found himself on the wrong side of an argument half a mile from the edge of Washington Park when a man pulled out a handgun and shot him in the chest.I got there just as the police were stringing up yellow tape around the scene.I was a crime reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times then, tracking a never ending string of shootings and violence. For more than a year, I had a police scanner near my desk and listened to the dispatcher say "we're getting a ticket of a person shot" and "shots fired," among other depressing crimes.I was working the overnight shift that night, as I usually did, when the call went out over the scanner. "One of us should go," my co-worker said.When I got to the scene, it was dead silent and a bitter wind ran through my overcoat. I walked up to the line looking for Holiday's body, then saw him mangled in the street, a white sheet partially covering him. One of the cops asked me to step back because they were tying up an extra line. I walked to the darkened sidewalk and watched the tape blow in the wind and the blue lights bounce off the brick homes and disappear into abandoned lots.The silence didn't last. One by one, I watched Holiday's friends and families arrive in disbelief, then see his body. That's my baby's daddy!" A woman in her 70s wailed over and over "Wake up!" She yelled and screamed in a way I'd never heard before, as did the dozen or so others. Sometimes it was as if everyone was screaming at once.The cops moved an SUV in front of Holiday's body, and an officer took the older woman's hand and led her away. At one point, gunshots rang out a few blocks away. No one - not the police or the friends or family - looked surprised.That wasn't the first shooting I went to, but it was the first where I had witnessed such devastation. I thought I knew how to handle myself after scenes like that, but when I got home, back to the world I'd known before, I felt numb.<h2>A look I'll never forget</h2>Last year, more than <a href="http://www.npr.org/2017/01/07/508722463/gun-deaths-in-chicago-why-is-this-happening">4,000</a> people were shot in Chicago, and they've become so normalized that they rarely make the front page of the local papers, let alone the national news.About a month after Holiday's murder, as the Super Bowl was playing and my friends were posting pictures of their parties on social media, I was in the Sun-Times newsroom listening to the scanner scrolling through police zones."Alright, we're getting four people shot now," the dispatcher said. I pressed hold on the zone and listened. The dispatcher said the victims were all 15 years old. My editor told me not to go to the scene - no one was dead yet. But then I told her the ages.I raced my car down the highway to the South Side Englewood neighborhood where the shooting had happened. As she talked to me, her kids peeked out from behind the white curtain of their first floor apartment. They looked terrified too. I'll never forget that. I sensed that they weren't just scared because of the shooting, but also because she was talking to me, a journalist.The neighbor seemed nervous to talk to me. She asked that I didn't use her name, like most witnesses, and spoke quietly, as though she wanted to make sure no one heard her.It was only later that I learned the hard way that even appearing to give information to a journalist could be dangerous.<h2>'You tryna get me killed?'</h2>A few months later, I was in the office very late one day, or early, depending on how you look at it. I heard on the scanner that a male had been shot in the head. The dispatcher didn't call it a 0110 - the Chicago police code for homicide - but it sounded like one. I asked a guy walking down the sidewalk if he knew what happened, and he told me something about where the shooters were standing."Over there?" I asked, pointing to a trash can."Fuck you, man," he said. "You trying to get me killed?"He stormed off. It dawned on me that, with one flick of the wrist, I may have put him, and possibly myself, in danger. I felt awful.When I finally got to sleep that night, I dreamt that someone kept pointing a gun at me. I woke up screaming. I rushed to my computer and, there, in my inbox was an email from a family member of the victim. They were swearing and threatening me.<h2>I couldn't get the screams out of my head</h2>By July, I was having trouble relating to my friends and family.One night, I headed to a homicide scene in the neighborhood of Austin on the West Side. The trees were covering the city's notoriously golden street lamps, and it was really dark. The police had just taken the victim's body away and were taking down the yellow tape. I walked over to an older woman standing on the sidewalk. Another put his hand in his pants as though he had a gun holstered there. I had a sudden realization that all the police had left the scene. The three of them started cursing at me and walking forward.My heart started racing. I said "Alright" and turned and walked at a brisk, but steady pace to my car. I didn't want to run or walk away, since the former showed fear, and the latter was disrespectful. When I got to my car, I looked back and saw them down the street, still yelling at me. I felt stupid as hell.I had been feeling weird since the New Year's Day shooting. For a day or two after visiting a scene, I would feel this peculiar kind of tunnel vision. It was as though I were looking at the world through a foggy television screen. I couldn't touch or focus on anything.I couldn't get the screams out of my head. While they were all different, they were also all the same: the pain of losing someone to violence.Few people in my life understood what was going on.<h2>The socio-economics of murder</h2>It wasn't just the screams or the violence that made the scenes hard to process. It made the suffering harder to process.When I'd drive from the Sun-Times office downtown to the crime scenes, it was hard to miss the contrasts. The skyscrapers, plush condos, and designer stores gave way to rundown buildings, boarded up schools and storefronts, and empty lots.At one crime scene, where a 28-year-old had been shot dead on a sidewalk, a young boy walked up and down the sidewalk along the police tape. No older than 7, he would stop and stare at the body every so often. As far as I could tell, it seemed normal to him.Another shooting I covered happened at a memorial. Nearly 100 people had gathered to remember a friend killed on the block a few years prior when a man pulled out a gun and killed a man and a woman and injured two more. A 16-year-old girl at the memorial had an asthma attack during the shooting and died later at the hospital.At another, a 16-year-old boy was shot in his car after a man walked up and asked where he was from. "I'm not about that," the boy's friends told me he said. The man pulled out a gun and shot him in the head."I just bought him a plane ticket to Mississippi, and now he's dead," the boy's mother told me.It just felt like bodies were piling up in my head.<h2>Tired</h2>This is just a small fraction of the scenes I saw in Chicago.What's awful is that what I saw pales in comparison to what some reporters in the city have seen. But by the time I put my two weeks in, I was tired of living in the dark.I was tired of having to take two or three Xanax to fall asleep, only to black out and then suddenly wake up 4 hours later in a feverish sweat.I was tired of dreaming nightmares every night - my girlfriend at the time told me that I would frequently scream in my sleep.I was tired of hearing the dispatcher say, "we're getting a ticket of a person shot. Person shot."I was tired of the constant guilt and I was tired of being threatened and screamed at by the people whom I was trying to help - although I certainly understood their anger and emotion.It's been about 8 months since I quit and I'm still processing what I saw. Before Jennifer Lawrence returns to the big screen in November, get caught up with "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire."
Chelsea Handler's comedy special "Uganda Be Kidding Me" will premiere halfway through the month. The special is part of a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chelsea-handler-netflix-10-million-2014-8">reported $10 million</a> contract the comedienne signed with the streaming service earlier this year.

Chelsea Handler's "Uganda Be Kidding Me" special (Available 10/10) It's not technically a show, nor is it a movie, so we'll mention it here. Netflix spent a reported $10 million on Handler so it's worth checking out to see if the comedienne was a wise investment for the streaming site.

"Rescue Dawn" (available 10/1) Before he was Batman, Christian Bale was fighting for his life in a torture camp in Vietnam.
"Romeo + Juliet" (available 10/1) Often the cool version kids will substitute for reading the actual Shakespearean play, it's young Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes longing for love on the streets of Verona Beach with guns in place of swords.
"Sleepless in Seattle" (available 10/1) Tom Hanks. Meg Ryan. What else is there to say?
"Shivers" (available 10/1) If you're looking for a scare, it's the first film from horror master David Cronenberg ("The Fly") described as about "bloodthirsty, wormlike parasites" -- in one gruesome and memorable sequence, they attack a woman in a bathtub 
"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" (available 10/21) This is a must watch if you need a refresher before the sequel, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part I," comes out in November. It's the movie everyone will be talking about this fall.
"Django Unchained" (available 10/25) - If you haven't seen Quentin Tarantino's latest Oscar winner, watch this one for the onscreen tension between Leonardo DiCaprio and Christoph Waltz. "Rain Man" (available 10/31) Don't get too excited for Dustin Hoffman's Oscar-winning performances yet. You'll have to wait until Halloween for this one. We're sad, too.
