<keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> is holding discussions with <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> to deploy WiFi hotspots for the US internet major's service to provide WiFi service for railway stations and other public places in India. If consented, the move might help India's leading telecom company improve its broadband experience amidst its struggle to retain subscribers because of intense competition after <keyword id="2003276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword>’s commercial launch. "<keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword> is having discussions with Google around Station WiFi...these are initial discussions," a person familiar with the matter told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/internet/bharti-airtel-in-talks-with-google-for-wifi-hotspots/articleshow/59008811.cms">ET</a>. Another source said that Airtel is planning for new partnerships around WiFi so that it can overcome challenges related to monetisation and ecosystem. It was in this direction that Airtel recently signed a partnership with <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword> to deploy 20,000 WiFi hotspots. "Companies like Google and Facebook can help telcos overcome challenges related to software, as their existing software is not scalable. By partnering with telcos, companies like Google and Facebook are taking away some cost by providing software," said a source. In an earlier interaction with ET, <keyword id="45395" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google-India">Google India</keyword>'s country head (connectivity) <keyword id="3324595" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gulzar-Azad">Gulzar Azad</keyword> had said, "We are looking at more partnerships around Google Station platform. A specific initiative is partnerships with system integrators. Larsen &amp; Toubro is one we are in discussions with. Interactions are also on with ISPs. Some will translate into partnerships." Google recently won its first city WiFi deal in collaboration with companies such as IBM, Larsen &amp; Toubro and RailTel from Pune Smart City Development Corporation.

Bharti Airtel might deploy WiFi hotspots for Google’s station WiFi service

As a part of its tie up with Indian Railways’ internet provider Railtel, Google has extended free internet service through WiFi to 10 railway stations in India. 
 
The first such service was launched at the Mumbai Central station last year, and now, the high-speed wireless broadband service covers Pune, Bhubaneshwar, Bhopal, Ranchi, Raipur, Vijayawada, Kacheguda (Hyderabad), Ernakulum Jn (Kochi) and Vishakhapatnam. 
 "As internet adoption grows in India, easy and affordable access to high-speed networks is the real need of the hour," Gulzar Azad, Head of Access Project, <keyword id="45395" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google-India">Google India</keyword>, told ET. He also added that efforts are on so that the network can quickly be provided to smaller stations with limited connectivity. 
 
By the end of this year, Google and RailTel aim to cover 100 stations, one-fifth of what Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced when he visited India in December last year. 
 
The service will be free for a reasonable time, but government aims to make this project self-sustainable in the future, so that it can be expanded to more stations and places.

Enjoy free internet service at 10 railway stations, thanks to Google

In continuation with its project to provide high-speed public <keyword id="47655" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wi-Fi">Wi-Fi</keyword> service at 100 Railway stations across India by end of the year, <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> on Monday announced the launch of its free high-speed public Wi-Fi service at Ujjain, Jaipur, Patna, Guwahati and Allahabad railway stations. 

	Minister of Railways Suresh Prabhu will formally inaugurate the service at these stations soon, it said.
 

	Google said it has been deploying the service over the extensive fibre network of Indian Railway's arm Railtel which provides Internet services as RailWire.
 

	With these launches, the service is now live and available to users at 15 stations across the country, it added.
 

	Backed by the "phenomenal" response to the service in Mumbai Central, Google will also extend the project to cover key suburban Mumbai stations working with RailTel.
 

	Google will deploy the service in Dadar, Bandra Terminus , Churchgate, Thane, Kalyan, Panvel, Vashi, Kurla, Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus, Borivali and a few others, it added.
 "We're seeing incredible usage of the Wi-Fi service across the stations and over 2.5 lakhs users are using the service every week, demonstrating more than 2x growth in less than a month," <keyword id="45395" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google-India">Google India</keyword> Head of Access Programs Gulzar Azad told PTI. 

	Stating that Google is committed to working with Indian Railways and Railtel to deliver high-speed Wi-Fi network that will be available to 10 million Indians by the end of the year, covering 100 of the busiest train stations in India, it said the project will be eventually rolled out to cover 400 train stations across India.
 The Railtel-Google free high-speed public Wi-Fi service is currently available at Mumbai Central, Pune, Bhubaneshwar, Bhopal, Ranchi, <keyword id="45327" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Raipur">Raipur</keyword>, Vijayawada, Kacheguda, Ernakulum Junction, Vishakhapatnam, Jaipur, Patna, Guwahati, Ujjain and Allahabad.
