<keyword id="19896255" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="kashmir" source="keywords">Kashmir</keyword> is likely to receive light snow and rain next week, bringing an end to the prolonged dry spell in the valley, the weather office said on Friday. It said dry weather is likely to continue till January 24 with generally cloudy weather on Saturday evening. There is a possibility of light snow at isolated places in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir on January 25, an official of the <keyword id="19938289" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="met-department" source="keywords">MeT Department</keyword> said. He said from January 26-28, light rain or snow is likely over scattered places in J-K. "From January 29-31, as per the indications of different models, the possibility of light to moderate rain/snow at many places is very likely, the official said. A dry and largely snowless winter in Kashmir has resulted in freezing nights and warmer than usual days. Kashmir is currently under the grip of "Chilla-i-Kalan", a 40-day harsh winter period when a cold wave sweeps the region and temperatures drop considerably leading to the freezing of water bodies as well as water in pipes. The chances of snowfall are the highest during this period and most areas, particularly the higher reaches, receive heavy snowfall. However, Kashmir has been going through a prolonged dry spell and a 79 per cent deficit in rainfall was recorded for December while there has been no precipitation in most parts of the valley in the first fortnight of January. 'Chilla-i-Kalan' will end on January 31. However, the cold conditions will continue after that with a 20-day 'Chilla-i-Khurd' (small cold) and a 10-day 'Chilla-i-Bachha' (baby cold). <keyword id="19910854" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="srinagar" source="keywords">Srinagar</keyword> city recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.9 degrees Celsius on Thursday night, dropping slightly from the previous night's minus 4.6 degrees Celsius, the officials said. Qazigund recorded a low of minus 5 degrees while in the ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir it was minus 3.6 degrees Celsius, they said. Pahalgam in south Kashmir's Anantnag district, which serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath Yatra, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 6.3 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in Kokernag town settled at minus 1.4 degrees Celsius and in Kupwara at minus 5 degrees Celsius.

Srinagar-Jammu national highway blocked as heavy rains lead to landslides

At minus 6.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday, Srinagar recorded the coldest night of the season so far, while the temperature in Ladakh's <keyword id="6522554" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="drass-town">Drass town</keyword> to minus 29. "Srinagar recorded minus 6.6 as the <keyword id="10459092" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="minimum-temperature-today">minimum temperature today</keyword> which is the coldest recorded so far this season. This record was surpassed during the last 10 years on December 25, 2018 when the minimum had dropped to minus 7.7 in Srinagar," an official of the MET Department said. "Drass town recorded minus 29 as the minimum temperature which is the lowest recorded today in Jammu and <keyword id="6354495" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="kashmir">Kashmir</keyword> and Ladakh," the official added. <keyword id="108228" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gulmarg">Gulmarg</keyword> recorded minus 9.2 and Pahalgam minus 9.5 as the night's lowest temperatures. Leh town recorded minus 18.3 and Kargil minus 21.1 as the minimum temperatures. Jammu city recorded 3.3, Katra 4.9, Batote 2.5, Bannihal 3.2 and Bhaderwah minus 3.0 as the minimum temperatures. Water taps in Srinagar city and other towns of <keyword id="10425442" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-kashmir-division">the Kashmir Division</keyword> were frozen on Saturday morning and locals were seen lighting small fires around to de-freeze them. Slippery road conditions prevented most locals from venturing out in the morning as the biting chill lashed <keyword id="9364901" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-kashmir-valley">the Kashmir Valley</keyword>. The 40-day-long period of harsh winter cold known locally as the 'Chillai Kalan' will begin on December 21 and end on January 31.

Srinagar records season’s coldest night at minus 6.6 degrees Celsius

The first-ever Winter Games under '<keyword id="3331390" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Khelo-India">Khelo India</keyword>', a national programme for development of sports, will commence at J&amp;K's <keyword id="108228" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gulmarg">Gulmarg</keyword> from March 7 to 11. In the mega national event, 830 players from across India will participate in 30 events which include snow skiing, snow boarding, cross-country, snow show, snow cycling and other snow-based events. The J&amp;K government is making arrangements to provide hassle-free facilities to players and other concerned. Efforts are on to provide a facilitation centre, hospitality &amp; protocol services, transportation, boarding and lodging, procurement of materials &amp; equipment, technical requirements, press publicity, a cultural programme, food, maintenance of snow slopes, area domination, security, medical camps, event management and other arrangements. Divisional Commissioner, <keyword id="6354495" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="kashmir">Kashmir</keyword>, Baseer Ahmad Khan on Wednesday chaired a high-level meeting of officials to review all arrangements put in place for the event. He directed officers concerned to set up round the clock control rooms at Srinagar, Tangmarg and Gulmarg in which officers from PHE, PDD, Medical, Police, SDRF and the Magistrates concerned will be deployed to monitor all activities with backup plan till the culmination of the mega sporting event. The Deputy Commissioner <keyword id="52395" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Baramulla">Baramulla</keyword> will set a media centre in Gulmarg in which all requisite facilities should be provided to the national media. Besides, he will establish medical camps at various locations with doctors and other staff with medicine and ambulances. The Health Department will screen all players at airport and on national highways for <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> symptoms. In case of any exigency, the department will initiate immediate measures for particular case.
